Housetrained Puppy May Need a Refresher
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My new Beagle puppy, “Socks,” keeps peeing in the same spot on the carpet every day. I thought he was housetrained when I adopted him from the shelter, and I’ve been careful to take him out each morning. But his third day here he peed on that spot and he’s gone there every day since. What can I do? -- Wits’ End in Maryland DEAR WITS’ END: This can happen with any dog at just about any age, even if it is wellhousebroken. There are a number of reasons why -- from health issues to anxiety. First, get Socks checked out at the vet to rule out any issues, like a urinary tract infection, that might cause a lapse in housetraining. This is something you should do anytime there’s a sudden change in a pet’s behavior. Then you’ll need to clean the area thoroughly to remove as much of the pee smell as possible
-- not just for your nose, but to stop Socks from identifying the area so easily as a place to pee. If he’s peeing on carpet, you will likely need to replace that section as well as the padding underneath. Next, reintroduce a stricter routine for a while. That doesn’t mean punishing Socks for a housetraining mistake; rather, it means a tighter training routine for both of you. If you know the approximate time that he peed on the carpet, put him on a leash at that time and take him outside. Give him lots of praise when he pees outdoors. If you’re not sure when he pees there, or can’t be at home at the time, crating Socks during periods you’re away may be helpful. Don’t keep him in the crate for more than a couple hours at a time. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

This unusual round cabinet was made to hold a collection of curios or china. It was sold at a Garth’s in Ohio auction for $450.
Hollywood Deco Fifties furniture is very popular with vintage collectors today, but some earlier Art Deco designs from the 1930s are not in demand. Look at old movies on television to study some of the stranger pieces. The look is sometimes called “Hollywood Deco” because the extravagant rooms with huge round mirrors and sofas were exaggerations of the modern furniture used in average homes. An unfamiliar cabinet was sold recently at a Garth’s auction. It was a flat, round cabinet on a base. When placed against a wall, it showed all of the 51-inch diameter of the cabinet and the glass doors and shelves waiting to display a collection. The plain solid base stretched beyond the rounded sides to give safe support for the top-heavy design. This type of cabinet was made in the 1930s, but most for sale today were made in England, not the U.S. Most have no maker’s name and the wood choice suggests it was not expensive when new. Some were oak or even mahogany, but many were made of laminate with grain painting. A cabinet like this sold at a Midwestern auction in 2016 for $450. A selection of similar round modernist curio cabinets found online had asking prices as high as $2,000, but most of these are in English shops and prices were cut to less than $500. ***
Q: I’d like some information about a pitcher and washbowl made by Edward Clarke. It’s marked on the bottom with two touching shields. The words “Edward Clarke, Tunstall, Trade Mark, Stone China” are above the shields and “Stone China” below. A: Edward Clarke made earthenware and white ironstone at Phoenix Works in Tunstall, England, from about 1865 to 1877. That’s when your pitcher and washbowl were made. They probably were part of a commode set that included a soap dish, chamber pot and other items. Before there was indoor plumbing, a commode set or chamber set was kept in the bedroom and emptied each morning. *** Q: I came across an old R.C. Allen 10 Key Calculator Model 35 that my dad used for his business. On the front, it says “World Famous 10 Key Calculator, American and Swedish Patents.” A: Ralph C. Allen founded his company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1932. It also manufactured and distributed cash registers and typewriters. Your calculator was made in 1948 and originally sold for $397. Old calculators are not very useful and not popular collectibles, so they are very hard, if not impossible, to sell. *** The 50th Anniversary edition of “Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide 2018” has just been published. Amazing Plants WHITE SNAKEROOT • White snakeroot is a perennial plant related to the daisy family. It gets its name from the fact that Native Americans used a concoction of the plant to treat the symptoms of snake bite. But few plants have caused as much misery as white snakeroot. • In the early 1800s, pioneers moved into the frontier regions of the Midwestern United States. They settled along the Ohio River valley and its tributaries, which were the main transportation routes. White snakeroot grew wild there, preferring half-shaded riverbanks, thickets, and meadows. Livestock, left free to forage during the day, frequently grazed upon the tender shoots of white snakeroot, particularly in the spring when it’s one of the first plants to poke above the melting snows. The settlers were unfamiliar with the plant because it does not grow in the Eastern United States or Europe. What they didn’t know is the white snakeroot contains a toxin called tremetol. • When ingested by a cow, the poison is concentrated in the milk, which is passed on to the calf. The mother cow may not suffer any symptom of poisoning at all, but the calf will soon suffer symptoms including loss of appetite, vomiting, gastrointestinal pain, constipation, weakness, and trembling. Coma and death inevitably follow. If the milk is consumed by a person, the same thing happens. Settlers dubbed the illness “milk sick.” • No one knew what caused milk sick. There was no way of knowing if milk was contaminated prior to drinking it. Meat from an animal that had eaten white snakeroot was also deadly. The toxin cannot be neutralized by boiling, cooking, or pasteurization, so butter and cheese were also tainted. Even dried snakeroot plants retain their toxicity for years if mixed in with forage. For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 WHITE SNAKEROOT • Milk sick killed Abraham Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks, when she was 34. Sometimes half the people in a settlement might die of it. The disease was prevalent throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Illinois. • In 1830, the Kentucky General Assembly offered a $600 reward to anyone discovering its cause. • A woman in Illinois named Anna Bixby was the first person who put two and two together. She noted that the illness became prevalent every spring when the white snakeroot first appeared above the ground, offering an inviting thing to nibble on for passing cattle. Cows tended to get sick, but other livestock did not. She started following cows around to see what they were eating. • While doing that, she met a Shawnee woman who told her of the poisonous qualities of the plant. Bixby harvested the plant and deliberately fed it to her cow, whose calf subsequently died from the disease. She spread the word among her neighbors, leading a campaign to rid the area of white snakeroot. • Her attempts to notify authorities of her discovery fell on deaf ears, largely because she was a woman. A farmer named William Jerry also tried to spread the word in the year 1867. American medical science did not officially identify the cause of milk sickness until 1928, when advances in biochemistry enabled the analysis of the plant’s toxin. • Milk sickness is rare today. Current practices of animal husbandry generally control the pastures and feed of cattle. The pooling of milk from many producers lowers the risk. Still, milk sickness can occur if a person drinks contaminated milk or eats dairy products gathered from a single cow or from a smaller herd that has fed on the white snakeroot plant. There is no cure, but supportive treatment is available.

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties MOVIE MISTAKES
• Greta Garbo sails dramatically off into the sunset in the closing scene of the 1933 movie “Queen Christina.” The wind is full in her face, blowing her hair back as she stands at the helm of the ship. But the sails in the scene behind her are filled with a wind coming from the opposite direction. • In the 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” Shoeless Joe Jackson bats right-handed. Shoeless Joe was actually left-handed. • In “The Story of Robin Hood,” Maid Marian (played by Joan Rice) wears a dress with a zipper clearly visible. The fictional Robin Hood lived in the 1600s, long before zippers. • Eddie Murphy is handcuffed when sprung from jail in “48 HRS.” In the next scene, his arm is draped over the back seat of the automobile but in the next scene he’s handcuffed again. • In the 1968 movie “The Scalphunters,” which takes place in the 1800s, an actor mentions the planet Pluto, which was not discovered until the 1930s. • Walter Matthau had a heart attack in the middle of filming “The Fortune Cookie” in 1966. He resumed filming five months later. In the movie, he goes out a door and comes back forty pounds lighter. • In the 1978 film “Foul Play,” Goldie Hawn sits on a park bench eating a sandwich. First it’s whole, then it’s half gone, then the sandwich returns whole, then it’s half gone again. The next shot shows just one bite taken, before it disappears entirely. • Celia Johnson runs through a rainstorm in the 1945 film “Brief Encounter,” but manages not to get wet at all. Michael Caine also stays dry after swimming to rescue Lorraine Gary in the 1987 film “Jaws of Revenge.” He climbs into her boat completely dry. (cont’d)

In “Dracula,” however, the doctor searches for a female vampire, first glimpsing her reflection in a pool of water. • In the 1989 movie “Cross of Fire,” the leading lady rakes up autumn leaves from her yard while the background trees are still sporting full foliage. They filmed in Kansas in July. • Katharine Hepburn’s name was misspelled “Katherine” in the credits on “State of the Union.” Alec Guinness’ name was spelled “Guines” in “Bridge on the River Kwai.” IT’S A FACT • When the giant Hollywood sign in the Los Angeles Hills fell into disrepair, rock star Alice Cooper decided to do something about it. He determined that each letter would cost about $28,000 to repair. He donated the first $28,000 himself, fixing up the first “O” in memory of his friend, Groucho Marx. Then he went on tour as “Alice Coper” to dramatize what a difference an “O” can make. Eventually he found sponsors for each letter in the sign. Among those who adopted a letter were Gene Autry, Hugh Hefner, Andy Williams, and Warner Brothers Records.

By Keith Roach, M. D,
Is There a Cure for Keloids?
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there a cure for keloids? My husband is 56 and has several keloids on his body, but there is one on his chest that has gotten considerably larger over the years and causes the most problems. He has experienced pain and discomfort, and it also bleeds at times. My husband would prefer not to have surgery. He was born with a keloid on his ear. At a very young age it was operated on, and it returned larger in size. He has tried numerous types of remedies, but none has prevented the keloid from growing or bleeding. -- J.B. ANSWER: A keloid (from a Greek word meaning “tumor-like”) is a complication of scar tissue. In some people, when the skin heals from a cut or a burn, the healing cells keep growing, creating a variably sized, disfiguring, sometimes painful lesion called a keloid. The best treatment in people who are predisposed to keloids is to avoid them by avoiding any unnecessary surgery (including ear and other body piercings). Once a keloid has formed, there are several possible treatments. Unfortunately, the longer a keloid has been there, the harder it is to treat. I have seen great results from silicone gel sheeting. This is particularly effective when used immediately after surgery, but may have some effectiveness on your husband’s chest keloid. Another potentially effective treatment is injection of steroids, which help flatten and shrink keloids up to 75 percent of the time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a fall on ice and suffered a severe concussion. I was unconscious for several minutes. At the hospital, I had a CT scan, but there was no damage. Two months later, I had an episode where I became disoriented and the room was spinning. I was taken to the hospital, given Antivert without success and kept overnight. A physical therapist came the next day, did some vestibular rehab that helped some, and I continued it at home as needed. The episodes are getting worse, and neither the Antivert nor the exercises are helping. Could this be due to the fall? My ENT says no. -- G.M. ANSWER: You clearly have vertigo, but whether it is due to the fall isn’t clear. Certainly, people with postconcussion syndrome get dizziness and vertigo, but in most cases I have seen, it starts soon after the trauma: Two months is longer than I have seen. Headaches also are common in postconcussion syndrome, but their absence doesn’t mean your vertigo is NOT due to the fall. Meclizine (Antivert) is an antihistamine commonly used for vertigo; however, prolonged use (more than a few days) prevents the brain from adapting to the changes in the balance system that caused the vertigo. Thus, it’s concerning that you may still be taking it. I have seen many people taking meclizine long term and having persistent vertigo. Vestibular rehab is the best treatment we have for vertigo. If it’s not working, it may be time to re-evaluate and make sure there isn’t another cause for the vertigo. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. * On Nov. 5, 1605, King James I of England learns that a plot to blow up the Parliament building with some 20 barrels of gunpowder was been foiled. Guy Fawkes was taken into custody and revealed that he was part of a conspiracy to annihilate England’s Protestant government. Every year Fawkes is burned in effigy in remembrance of the plot. * On Oct. 31, 1892, “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” by Arthur Conan Doyle, is published. The book was the first collection of Holmes stories, which had been published in magazines since 1887. * On Nov. 4, 1922, King Tut’s 3,000-yearold tomb is discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The tomb contained a stone sarcophagus with three nested coffins. Inside the final coffin, made of solid gold, was the mummy of the boyking Tutankhamen. * On Nov. 2, 1947, The Hughes Flying Boat -- the largest aircraft ever built -- is piloted by designer Howard Hughes on its first and only flight. The wooden aircraft had a wingspan longer than a football field and was designed to carry more than 700 men into battle. * On Nov. 1, 1959, Montreal Canadien Jacques Plante becomes the first NHL goaltender to wear a full facemask. After four broken noses, a broken jaw, two broken cheekbones and 200 stitches, Plante wore the mask, against the coach’s wishes. * On Nov. 3, 1976, “Carrie,” a horror film based on Stephen King’s 1974 best-selling first novel, opens in theaters. “Carrie” is considered one of the best big-screen adaptations of King’s work. * On Oct. 30, 1991, as a “perfect storm” hits the North Atlantic coast, the fishing boat Andrea Gail and its six-member crew are lost at sea. The disaster spawned the best-selling book “The Perfect Storm,” by Sebastian Junger, and a blockbuster Hollywood movie. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

* It was German dramatist, poet, philosopher and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who made the following sage observation: “Too many parents make life hard for their children by trying, too zealously, to make it easy for them.” * At one time in Ireland, a traditional Halloween activity was predicting future romance. It was one of the few times of the year when young men and women could mingle, and fortunetelling games to predict who they would marry were popular.

* Buick is one of the oldest automobile brands in the world, so you might expect that the company’s founder did pretty well for himself. Unfortunately for David Dunbar Buick, who incorporated the company in 1903, that wasn’t the case. In less than a year, the company was sold. Buick stayed on as a manager and worked on engine development, but only for two more years. When he left his namesake company in 1906, he sold his one remaining share of Buick for $100,000. That was a rather hefty sum at the time, but he lost it all in a series of unsuccessful ventures. At the time of his death in early 1929, he was virtually penniless. * It’s been reported that a shaved guinea pig bears a remarkable resemblance to a tiny hippopotamus. *** Thought for the Day: “Absolute faith corrupts as absolutely as absolute power.” -- Eric Hoffer (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

EVERYTHING MUST GO! LAST SALE OF 2017!
If you’ve considered getting a pet, this might be the perfect time to adopt one. A side effect of all the hurricanes we’ve had is the number of animal shelters that are completely filled. Either the owners can’t be found or the families have no homes to go back to and are living in shelters that won’t allow pets. In hurricane-hit areas, adoptions have plunged because people have so much to do just to take care of their families. Across the country, other shelters have taken up the cause and have run caravans (even planes) to bring rescued animals to areas that weren’t hit by hurricanes. Many shelters have lowered adoption fees so more animals can find homes. When adopted, all the animals will have been through quarantine and given shots and exams. What do you get out of it if you adopt a pet? The short list is more social interaction, less stress, lower blood pressure, increased physical exercise and structure to your days. Add to that the gratitude of an animal that’s been through crisis and is now in a loving, forever home. If it’s not possible for you to adopt a pet, consider being part of the welcoming committee when the animals arrive. They’ll be anxious from the long ride, eager to move around. They’ll need lots of TLC to calm down, and baths and soothing words. The shelter might need extra toys, leashes, food and blankets. Perhaps you can volunteer to be a collection point for those items. Or you could foster an animal on a short-term basis. Who knows ... it’s possible that in opening your home and heart to a homeless cat or dog that you’ll decide to make the arrangement permanent. After a hue and cry on the hospital’s website, it finally said yes, and the visit was on again. Pin-Ups for Vets, a kitchen-table startup that has been quite successful in supporting veterans, was created in honor of a grandfather who served during World War II. Since 2007, the group has visited more than 60 military hospitals and 20 military bases (some overseas), and have been welcomed at each one. They donate funds for veteran programs, deliver care packages, support homeless veterans and military wives, make hospital visits (wearing their vintage dresses) and chat with the veterans, and that’s just a partial list. At each visit they also hand out nostalgia calendars with 1940s pin-up girl themes. The calendars are extremely well-done. There are images of lovely ladies wearing retro dresses, high heels and hairstyles of that era, posing with great vintage vehicles (planes, trucks, tractors) -- all appropriate images. The clincher for me: Nearly all the women in the calendar are themselves military veterans. Check for yourself at www.pinupsforvets. com. The 2018 calendar features 21 veterans and costs only $15. You’ll also find posters, mugs, totes, signs and more on the website shopping page. With the holidays looming, consider buying a half dozen or more calendars and delivering them to a ward at your nearest VA hospital. (Hook up with a recreation therapist or voluntary services at the hospital.) Wear a Santa hat. Spend some time there talking to the patients, especially the older ones who either served or were children during World War II. Ask questions about those years. Get them talking.
