by Janet Spencer On April 23, 1838, the first steamboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean from England to America arrived in New York City. Come along with Tidbits as we remember the contribution made by steamships. SIRIUS vs GREAT WESTERN • The SS Great Western was the first paddlewheel steamship built with the intention of crossing the Atlantic, and it was the largest passenger ship in the world at the time. Built in Bristol, England, it was launched on March 31, 1838, whereupon a fire broke out in the engine room. Damage was minimal, but fifty passengers cancelled their bookings, leaving only seven passengers to make the trip. • Taking advantage of the delay, rival steamship Sirius embarked for New York, keen on beating the Great Western across the ocean. The Sirius left on April 4, followed by the Great Western on April 8. Even with the start, the Sirius beat the Great Western by only a single day, arriving on April 23. • The average speed of the Sirius was 8.03 knots (14.87 km/h) but the Great Western made the trip at 8.66 knots (16.04 km/h). The Great Western went on to make 45 ocean crossings in the next eight years, averaging 16 days west to New York and 13 days going back to Britain, in a day when the journey usually took 40 days on a sail-powered boat.

STEAMSHIP BEGINNINGS • Before steamships crossed the ocean, they plied the rivers. In 1819 the first steamboat made its way up the Missouri River as far as the site where Omaha sits today. It was called the Western Engineer and carried surveyors. It was shaped like a dragon monster, with the steam of the engines emitted from its mouth. It was hoped this fearful sight would prevent Indians from attacking the boat. Apparently the ploy was successful, as the boat encountered no trouble. FULTON’S MONOPOLY • Robert Fulton is remembered as the father of the steamboat, although John Fitch and John Stevens worked on the invention before him. Fulton adapted ideas of others and put steamboats in the public eye. He applied for a monopoly of steam traffic on the nation’s rivers. The state of New York granted him alone the right to operate steam powered boats within its boundaries. Fulton then asked for similar rights from other states. All turned him down except Louisiana. Controlling steam traffic in Louisiana meant that Fulton ultimately controlled much of the traffic on the Mississippi, because he could prevent all other steamships from reaching New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. • A man named Shreve was also interested in steamboats. To challenge Fulton’s monopoly, he took a boat called the Enterprise down the Mississippi to New Orleans. He put up bail for the boat as soon as he landed, before deputies had even attached it. He then returned north to build a better steamboat, called the Washington. • On her maiden voyage, the Washington set a speed record for travel from Louisville to New Orleans. The lawsuit against the Enterprise was still unsettled, and the Washington was quickly impounded. Shreve countered by getting a court order holding Fulton responsible for loss of income.
With Easter just a couple of weeks away, I thought I’d share a cute and simple idea for Cadbury eggs. I’m a sucker for holiday candy, so when I laid my eyes upon Cadbury Creme Eggs at the grocery store I immediately threw them into my cart. Then I experienced a brief moment of brilliance and decided to bake the Cadbury Cupcakes I had seen online. Here’s what you need: 24 paper cupcake liners Batter for 24 cupcakes. Box mix works fine or simply use your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe, it’s your call. 24 Cadbury Creme Eggs (frozen) Freezing the eggs keeps them from completely vanishing inside the baked cake. 1 batch or 2 cans of buttercream frosting.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve owned and trained cats most of my adult life. Regarding your recent column on keeping cats off the counter: You’re right, of course, about training cats when they’re young. But felines are smart creatures, so even an old cat can learn new tricks. The key is to use their dislikes and/or their acute senses of hearing and smell. Most cats dislike getting wet. So, if the rattling pennies don’t work, a small squirt gun or water pistol -- emphasis on “small” -- works remarkably well with training (not disciplining) felines to not jump on tables, etc. Aim for ears or neck. Avoid the eyes, of course. Cats differ from dogs in that dogs can be disciplined by the stick; cats are trained mainly by the carrot. So when your kitty cat has jumped down from the table, love him up. The same applies for various kitty cat bad habits, such as scratching the furniture,

etc. One thing that doesn’t ever work with a cat is swatting them, as one might do with a rolled up newspaper for a dog. Corporal punishment only insults them. Also, for neighborhood cats prowling your garden, flowerbeds, etc., at night and yowling, black pepper sprinkled about is most effective. -- Stephen B., Daytona Beach, Fla. FULTON’S MONOPOLY (cont’d) • By now, people realized it was a mistake to let only one company run steamboats on the river. Public sentiment was against Fulton. Seeing the writing on the wall, lawsuits were dropped and the monopoly was broken. • Later Shreve was appointed U.S. Superintendent of Western River Improvements. He invented the ‘snag boat’ which cleared some 300 miles of the Mississippi River of obstacles. Shreveport, Louisiana was named after him. —Fact— One of Shreve’s tasks was to dismantle a floating, living raft made of logs and live trees, weeds and shrubs. This huge tangled mass of vegetation was 26 miles (42 km) long. Each time the Mississippi River flooded, the raft would be lifted and moved to some other location, blocking shipping lanes where ever it went. It took Shreve five years and $311,000 merely to blast a channel through the center of the raft. It wasn’t until some 30 years later when, with the help of a new invention called nitroglycerin, U.S. Engineers were able to blast away the last of the Great Raft. BUGS IN THE SYSTEM • Shreve built many steamboats but his favorite was always the Washington. When a boiler exploded on June 9, 1819, Shreve was injured and 8 others died. This was the first in a long string of steamboat accidents. Besides exploding boilers, another problem was the incredible heights of the boats. At first steamboats were only double-deckers, then a third and fourth deck were added. These towering boats could not hold their own against crosswinds and were often blown into shoals. Another danger was the fact that the entire boats were made of wood and were extremely flammable.

• On April 27, 1667, blind poet John Milton sells the copyright to his masterpiece “Paradise Lost” for a mere 10 pounds. Once printed, the poem was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of the English language. In 1671, he wrote “Paradise Regained,” followed by “Samson Agonistes.” He died in 1674. • On April 25, 1859, at Port Said, Egypt, ground is broken for the Suez Canal, an artificial waterway intended to stretch 101 miles across the isthmus of Suez and connect the Mediterranean and the Red seas. When it opened, the Suez Canal was only 25 feet deep, 72 feet wide at the bottom, and 200 feet to 300 feet wide at the surface. Fewer than 500 ships navigated it in its first year of operation. • On April 24, 1863, the Union army issues General Order No. 100, which provided a code of conduct for Federal soldiers and officers when dealing with Confederate prisoners and civilians. The venue became famous for openly and shamelessly excluding all but the most chic, famous or beautiful patrons. • It was Benjamin Franklin who made the following sage observation: “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.” • If you’re like 87 percent of American adults, you use the Internet. The only thing I find surprising about this statistic is that there are 13 percent of adults who [SET ITAL]don’t[END ITAL] use it. • In a recent survey, more Americans said they would have a hard time giving up the Internet than said they’d have a hard time giving up TV. • Those interested in maritime history (and practically everyone else, for that matter) are familiar with the story of the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on the night of April 15, 1912. It’s interesting to note, though, that in 1898 a book called “Futility,” by Morgan Robertson, described an almost identical scenario: The ship in the novel was called Titan, and, like the Titanic, it was trying to break a speed record for crossing the Atlantic. The Titan was declared to be unsinkable, and it didn’t have enough lifeboats for all the passengers. On its fictional voyage in the month of April, it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank, resulting in the deaths of almost all the passengers. • In Ireland, the police do not carry firearms. Their only weapons are batons and pepper spray. • In 1943, then-chairman of IBM, Thomas Watson, went on the record saying, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” • If you’re afraid of sharks, you might want to consider this tidbit: Every year, more people are killed by bees than by sharks. Shreve’s snag boats removed 2,245 snags and 1,710 overhanging trees in 300 miles. A LANDMARK COURT CASE In 1853 the Rock Island Railroad built a drawbridge over the Mississippi River in order to let trains cross the river. When a steamboat called the Effie Afton smashed against the bridge and sunk with the loss of many lives, the owner hired a young lawyer who argued that the railroad was at fault and should be forced to remove the bridge. Although the steamboat company spent $20,000 on litigation, the case was lost. Soon railroad bridges were popping up along the length of the river. The young lawyer, however, went on to greater things. His name was Abe Lincoln. A NEW PORT In 1851 David Denny and John Low built a cabin on the Puget Sound and started a town. Shortly afterwards the first steamboat arrived, looking for lumber to carry to San Francisco. The pioneers had lots of lumber, but there was no easy place where the logs could be loaded on the ship. The settlers decided to relocate their town to a place where boats could more easily be loaded and unloaded. The local Indians helped them find a new townsite. The new town was named for their chief. Today it’s the largest metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest, and it the 8th largest port in the U.S. What city is it? Answer at the bottom of the page. RAILROADS vs STEAMSHIPS When railroads started crossing the continent, people with vested interests in steamships tried to vilify railroads. In posters and ads, railroads were called the work of the devil. But railroads eventually put steamboats out of business. ANSWER: Seattle.

FAMOUS CANADIANS: SAMUEL CUNARD • Samuel Cunard was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1787, the son of a successful carpenter. He grew up on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the thriving maritime industries of Halifax. • At the age of 17, he took over management of his father’s large lumber yard. He then spent three years studying the shipping industry in Boston. When Samuel returned to Halifax from Boston at the age of 21, his father built a wharf and bought a schooner, and together they established the firm of A. Cunard & Son as they engaged in trading up and down the coast of Canada. Soon, a second ship was added in order to engage in river trade. • When the War of 1812 broke out, A. Cunard & Son was one of the few shipping outfits authorized to operate in American waters while flying a neutral flag. When the war ended, Samuel went to England where be obtained the contract to carry mail from Britain to Bermuda once a month. By 1814, Bermuda enjoyed the most reliable mail delivery of any of the British colonies. In 1816, Samuel Cunard was also granted the contract to carry mail from England to Boston.

• When his father died, the company was renamed S. Cunard & Co as several of Samuel’s brothers joined the firm. By now the company owned thirty ships, all of them powered by sail which was the only option at the time. Next Samuel landed the contract to carry tea for the East India Company of London. Then he bought a coal mine in Nova Scotia and started shipping coal. • By 1825, the Cunard brothers were becoming interested in a new invention, the steamship. They commissioned the construction of their first steamer, the Royal William.

SAMUAL CUNARD, cont’d The Royal William ran between Halifax and Quebec. When a cholera outbreak forced the Royal William into quarantine, the company nearly went bankrupt, but Samuel Cunard was convinced that transatlantic steamship service was feasible. To test his theory, in 1833, he took the Royal William across the Atlantic from Canada to England, making the trip in only 17 days. While in England, he sold the ship. Five years later, Samuel Cunard was in England when he saw several side-wheel paddle steamships under construction in the race to be the first steamer to travel across the Atlantic from England to America. He followed the story of the race between the Sirius and the Great Western with interest. Back in Canada, he saw an ad in the London Times: “Steam vessels required for conveying Her Majesty’s Mails and Dispatches between England and Halifax, N.S., and also between England, Halifax and New York.” Cunard set sail for England at once, where he won the contract. He commissioned the construction of three steamers, knowing that this venture would make or break him. The new firm was called Cunard’s Company, shortened to simply Cunard’s. By 1940, Samuel Cunard had three steamers making regular ocean crossings in only 12 days. After establishing an unbeatable reputation for safety, Cunard began investing in ocean liners, dominating the Atlantic passenger trade with ships such as the RMS Queen Mary, the RMS Queen Elizabeth, and the Queen Elizabeth II. Samual Canard died a wealthy man in 1865. The Cunard line continues to this day, although it now operates as a division of the Carnival Corporation and is based out of the United Kingdom rather than Canada.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com NAUTICAL RACES • In 1851 Prince Albert hosted the Great London Exhibition to showcase technological advances. In conjunction, Queen Victoria invited all nations to participate in the annual 53-mile regatta around the Isle of Wight. Fifteen British vessels entered, plus one American boat. • The owner of the American boat, John Stevens, was the first commodore of the New York Yacht Club, and his boat was designed by engineer George Steers, who made his living designing sleek, quick boats. It won by a wide margin. Legend has it that when the Queen asked, “Who has won?” and was told who it was, she replied, “And who is second?” only to be told, “Your Majesty, there is no second.” It was some time before the second place winner showed up. • The trophy, made of 134 ounces of silver, was called the ‘One Hundred Guinea Cup’ because that’s how much it cost. It was awarded to Stevens and his crew. He donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club in 1857 with the stipulation that it be awarded to the winner of international boat races held once every three years, in order to stimulate competition between countries. • The trophy and the race were named after Stevens’ boat, and a race was born. What was the name of the ship, now the name of a famous yacht race? Answer at the bottom of the next page. A GOOD LOSER • As a young man in Glasgow, Scotland, Thomas helped his parents run their small grocery store. He spent a few years living in the U.S. where his work in a New York City grocery store introduced him to the effectiveness of publicity events and advertising.

He engaged in innovative marketing techniques including staging parades and hiring brass bands. By 1888 he owned over 300 stores. • Around the time Thomas opened his 300th grocery store, the price of tea began to fall, and his middle-class customers began drinking more of it. Spotting an opportunity, Thomas opened a tea trading office and established wholesale distribution channels that allowed workingclass people to be able to easily afford tea. He bought his tea in such large amounts that he was able to undercut competitor’s prices. • This was such a successful venture that he began to invest in tea plantations. In Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), coffee plantation owners had recently suffered a coffee blight that ruined their crop, so Thomas convinced them to plant tea instead. • In a time when most tea was sold by the pound, Thomas pioneered selling it packaged in individual bags. • Thomas’ hobby was yachting, and he entered the America’s Cup yacht race five times, hoping to bring the trophy home to Britain. He lost every time, but the publicity he got from being ‘the world’s best loser’ caused tea sales to soar. Today, Thomas’ last name is synonymous with tea. What’s his name? Answer below. Q: While cleaning out one of my mother’s closets, I found a small jewelry box that contained several pieces of costume jewelry from the 1930s. A: I contacted several costume jewelry experts, and they seem to agree that the two pieces you listed are worth at least $100 each, perhaps much more. Q: In about 1949, I received a 78-rpm record album of “Bozo at the Circus.” The album featured colorful illustrations of circus animals and two records that contained the story. I still have it and wonder if it is rare. -- Jimmy, Metarie, La. A: Alan W. Livington created the original concept for Bozo the Clown. Pinto Colvig, a former vaudeville headliner, radio actor and, yes, circus performer, became the voice of Bozo on the recorded stories issued by Capitol Records. The set you have was issued in 1946 and it became so popular that the company began promoting Bozo as Bozo the Capitol Clown. In 1949, KTTV-TV in Los Angeles was the first to air a Bozo televised series, and it soon became one of the most popular syndicated programs for children. “Bozo at the Circus” is not considered a rarity. Most of the copies I’ve seen in shops and at antiques malls have been priced in the $15 to $25 range.

Q: We self-installed a kitchen faucet last year, an expensive single-lever unit with a faucet that curves up several inches high so that there’s plenty of room for pots and pans underneath. For several weeks now, whenever I turn off the water, a thin stream of water continues trickling out of the faucet for several minutes. I make sure to push the lever all the way down when I turn it off, but that doesn’t fix it. How do we repair this? -- Joyce G., Burlington, Vt. A: If you saved the manufacturer instructions or warranty card, dig that paper out and look for a customer service number. The most likely problem with the faucet is a faulty cartridge, and in a unit that was only purchased about a year ago, that part should be covered in the faucet’s warranty. Contacting the manufacturer through the number given on the manual or warranty card will connect you with a troubleshooting department that can walk you through additional steps to determine whether a replacement cartridge is needed. If you can’t find those documents, go to the manufacturer’s website and look up the faucet model -- a manual may be available online along with a contact number. Or, if it’s out of warranty but you have the receipt, contact the store where you bought the faucet; some home-improvement stores have return or parts replacement policies in place for many of their items, particularly pricier ones. If the manufacturer (or the store) agrees that it’s a cartridge issue and is covered, it will send you a replacement cartridge. A new set of O-rings also should be included; if not, you’ll want to purchase the correct-size rings for your faucet model at the home-improvement store. The beauty of a cartridge faucet is that compared to older valve-type faucets, replacement is almost a breeze. You don’t have to struggle with re-seating the valve stem -- praying that you haven’t ground the re-seating tool around too far. Instead, you just pop in the new cartridge and replace the faucet seals. You shouldn’t have to worry about servicing that faucet again for several years. There are a number of online videos that detail the replacement of a kitchen faucet cartridge, which should help you with the repair.

The Long Arm of the VAOIG The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General (VAOIG) has, as usual, been busy investigating allegations of wrongdoing in the VA. Here are some recent highlights: • A Pennsylvania man, head of a veterans support group, defrauded the VA for seven years, taking $178,000 in healthcare and pension benefits he wasn’t entitled to. He stole a veteran’s identity to pull off the theft. He’ll get three years of supervised released and must pay back the entire amount. • At the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA medical center in South Carolina, VAOIG responded to allegations that there were high instances of surgical infections. They determined that infection control was “fragmented and inconsistent.” • In West Haven, Conn., inspectors found that lack of staff, incomplete and inconsistent procedures and poor training resulted in operating rooms that weren’t necessarily clean. Additionally, safeguards weren’t in place for safe handling of infectious patients at the same time as noninfectious patients. • A former director of a medical center in Ohio was guilty of 64 charges. A two-year investigation uncovered fraud, conspiracy and money laundering, which resulted from taking bribes from contractors and providing inside information. The loss to the government was approximately $20 million. • A Florida VA medical center police officer was found guilty of using law enforcement’s computers to get personal information on a military servicemember. He threatened to post explicit photos on social media unless the victim paid money. • A pharmacist at the VA medical center in Nashville diverted a large amount of drugs while working on the night shift. • In Pennsylvania, a contract employee filed fraudulent time sheets, claiming to work 100 hours a week when no work was actually done. Microsoft Abandons Windows XP Users If you’ve been on the Internet for a number of years and have refused to buy the latest and greatest things that have come out, you might currently have an unsupported operating system. Specifically, on April 8, 2014, Microsoft ceased support of the XP operating system, which first came out in 2001. While Microsoft started warning consumers a few years ago, many people have been unwilling to upgrade to the next operating system (Vista and then Windows 7). With XP support gone, you’ll no longer have security updates. Microsoft won’t fix new system vulnerabilities, ever, and criminals know this. At the same time, if you don’t want Windows 8.1 (many people don’t), you still have options: •Upgrade your computer to Windows 7, if you can. This might not be an option if your computer is too old to support the program. Unless you’re highly skilled in wiping hard drives, you’re better off handing your machine over to a repair technician for the installation. Here’s the dilemma many have to face: XP is a 32-bit program. Windows 7 is a 64-bit program. You can’t simply install Windows 7 over XP and expect the upgrade to go well. The hard drive has to be wiped (erased), with all your programs erased and your files saved elsewhere. Then, after installation, all your software and programs need to be reinstalled. (Yes, there is a Windows 7 32-bit version, but you’re better off avoiding that.) If you have a techie do this upgrade, it going to cost you some money for all the hours spent feeding software into your computer. • Buy a new computer. At this point, you’ll have a hard time finding a new system with Windows 7 on it. Everything in stores is now up to Windows 8. Look for one with downgrade rights to Windows 7. • Buy a refurbished computer with a new copy of Windows 7 64-bit on it and install your software yourself. All in all, this might be your cheapest option. Notice there’s no recommendation to jump in with a new computer and Windows 8.1, which is coming out this month with fixes to Windows 8. Unless you’re going all the way to touch screen and are up for a whole new experience and steep learning curve, Windows 8.1 might be too much of a leap. Hospital stays can make you sick. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that one quarter of patients in hospitals get serious infections. The study of more than 11,000 patients, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, looked at antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as bacterium clostridium difficile (commonly know as c. diff) and methicillinresistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a staph infection, being acquired in hospitals. Devices, such as catheters and ventilators, were included as the sources of infection. The study estimated that more than 700,000 infections were acquired in hospitals in one year alone. At the root of the massive numbers of antibiotic-resistant infections is the overprescription of antibiotics, which reduces their effectiveness. If you’re due for hospitalization, be bold about your own care. The CDC has a poster with these six steps to help avoid hospital infections. 1) Talk to your doctor, ideally before you go into the hospital. Ask what they’ll do to protect you against infections. If you have a catheter, will it be changed every day? How can you prepare in advance to guard against infection? 2) If no relatives or friends are around to represent you in the hospital, speak up! If you don’t see medical staff washing hands in your room before touching you, assume it wasn’t done and say something. 3) Ask if tests have been done to ensure that the right antibiotic is being used. 4) Know the signs of an infection: redness and pain at a surgical site, as well as fever. 5) If you’ve been taking antibiotics, watch out for diarrhea. Tell your doctor as it could be c. difficile, which can be deadly. 6) Get your flu shots and other vaccinations to prevent infections.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My family and I took a seven-day cruise more than six weeks ago. I still am feeling like I am on the ship -- all day, it feels as though I am walking on a swinging bridge. I did not even notice the movement while on the ship, nor did I get sick. I did not take any motion-sickness medicine while on the cruise. No one else in my family is having this problem. I am a 50-year-old female. Is there any treatment for this? What kind of doctor would I see? How long would you expect this to last? --T.S. ANSWER: You have the classic symptoms of disembarkment syndrome, also called mal de debarquement. Whereas most people getting off a boat or ship will have the sensation of moving for a few hours, in people with this syndrome, the symptoms may continue for months or even years. It seems to be more likely in women, and may have an association with migraine headache. Interestingly, going back on a boat can make it better in the short term, but worse later. One treatment is clonazepam, which provides some short-term relief. Standard treatments for vertigo usually do not help. Fortunately, most cases do get better after some weeks or months, but 18 percent still have symptoms even a year later. An expert in balance problems, often an ENT doctor, would be most likely to be familiar with this condition. The booklet on vertigo explains dizziness in detail and outlines its treatment. ANSWER: Foamy urine raises concern of excess protein. High amounts of protein in the urine could result from nephrotic syndrome, an indication of a serious kidney condition. Any doctor can do a urine test for protein; if it’s positive, your doctor will have you collect all the urine you make in 24 hours to see how much protein there is. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m wondering about the commercials regarding eating ice cream. The way they sound, it’s OK to eat it without fear of fat. I’m a male in his 70s, in fine health, and I am wondering if eating it is fine, but just once in a while. Thank you. -- A.A. ANSWER: Ice cream has more saturated fat and sugar than is good for you. People who want to be super-healthy don’t eat ice cream at all. However, I am a believer that it’s OK to indulge yourself once in a while in something that might not be the healthiest for you. Just make sure it’s something closer to once a month than it is to once a day. Glazed Ham with Apricots Yes, ham can be the centerpiece of a healthy Easter meal -- just choose a piece that’s lean (ask for shank), low-sodium and smoked (to reduce fat). Amp up the flavor with apricots and mustardmarmalade glaze. 1 (7-pound) fully cooked bone-in smoked half ham 1 package (6-ounce) dried apricot halves 2 tablespoons whole cloves 1/2 cup orange marmalade or apricot jam 2 tablespoons country-style Dijon mustard with seeds 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. With knife, remove skin and trim all but 1/8 inch fat from ham. Secure apricots with cloves to fat side of ham in rows, leaving some space between apricots. Place ham, fat side up, on rack in large roasting pan (17 by 11 1/2 inches); add 1 cup water. Cover pan tightly with foil. Bake 2 hours. 2. After ham has baked 1 hour and 45 minutes, prepare glaze: In 1-quart saucepan, heat marmalade and mustard to boiling on medium-high. Remove foil from ham and carefully brush with some glaze. Continue to bake ham 30 to 40 minutes longer or until meat thermometer reaches 135 F, brushing with glaze every 15 minutes. Internal temperature of ham will rise 5 to 10 degrees upon standing. (Some apricots may fall off into pan as you glaze.) 3. Transfer ham to cutting board; cover and let stand 20 minutes for easier slicing. Slice ham and serve with apricots from pan. Makes 16 servings. TIP: Ham halves are available as butt or shank. The shank half looks more like a classic whole ham because it contains the leg bone. It’s also easier to carve than the butt half, and less fatty. „ Each serving: About 240 calories, 7g total fat (2g saturated), 62mg cholesterol, 1,525 sodium, 16g total carbs, 0g dietary fiber, 29g protein.
