Did you know that about 7,500 magazines are published in America? Some are very familiar titles, others not so much! Tidbits takes some time to look at the history of one of our favorite sources of information and reading material.

● Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea of publishing America’s first magazine in 1741. He put his plans in place, but just three days before his American Magazine came out in print, Andrew Bradford beat him to the punch with General Magazine. Perhaps the nation wasn’t ready for such publications, because Bradford’s magazine lasted just three issues, and Franklin ceased printing his after six issues. A few others, including Christian History in 1743, tried their hand at publishing, but it wasn’t until 1821 that the first truly successful U.S. magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, hit the stands. ● The Saturday Evening Post was a weekly publication that quickly grew to become the most widely circulated weekly magazine in America, and the first to reach the 1,000,000 copies sold mark. The Post featured articles, human interest stories, cartoons, poetry, and features by wellknown authors. It may be best remembered for its covers that featured paintings by artist Norman Rockwell. Rockwell’s first cover was in May, 1916, and over the next 50 years, he provided more than 300 paintings for the magazine’s cover. Turn the page for more!

MAGAZINES (continued) ● National Geographic with its familiar yellow border has been published continuously since the first issue in 1888. Its articles about geography, history, and world culture are read by 8.3 million people in 36 languages around the world every month. National Geographic published its first wildlife photographs in 1906, and its first color photo appeared in 1914. ● Recently graduated from Yale in 1923, Henry Luce borrowed $86,000 from relatives to start up TIME magazine. TIME was designed with news summaries that “busy men” could read weekly in under an hour. The first issue’s cover featured retired Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Joseph G. Cannon. In July of that year, a woman was on the cover for the first time, a popular actress of the day, Italian Eleanora Duse. Starting out with 12,000 subscribers, by 1963, after 40 years of publication, TIME had a circulation of 3,600,000 in 150 countries. Today it has the world’s largest circulation for a weekly news magazine with over 25 million readers. ● In 1928, TIME began its famous “Man of the Year” issue, with Charles Lindbergh as the first person of distinction. This individual is chosen as the person who “for good or ill” has most affected the course of the year, with “ill” choices including Adolf Hitler. In 1936, the title became “Person of the Year,” when American socialite Wallis Simpson, the woman for whom King Edward VIII of England abdicated his throne, was chosen. TIME’s December 31, 1999 issued named Albert Einstein as the Person of the Century.

Or, explain the situation to the local pet shelter to see if they can find someone to adopt the birds. Hopefully, it won't come to that and your uncle will respect your wishes and find a better gift. Caring for a pet is a big responsibility, as you know, and picking one up as a last-minute gift is a terrible idea. Many shelters restrict or slow down adoptions during the holidays. Unfortunately, puppy mills and disreputable sellers do a booming business at times like these as adults look for the perfect present for kids. Pets aren't just a cute holiday surprise, they're a forever gift. The busy holiday season probably isn't the best time to find out if your family is ready to take on the responsibility of caring for a pet -- no matter what its size.

MAGAZINES (continued) ● LIFE magazine debuted in 1936 and is credited with establishing photojournalism. Publisher Henry Luce had already achieved great success with TIME, and wanted a publication that told the story in pictures. LIFE’s first cover featured a photo of Montana’s Fort Peck Dam, and the issue sold 380,000 copies. Just four months later, circulation was up over one million copies a week. LIFE was published weekly for 37 years. ● Henry Luce’s next success story was Sports Illustrated, which debuted in 1954. His advisors strongly cautioned him about launching a magazine strictly devoted to sports. Two previous magazines of the same name had already failed during the 1930s and 1940s. The first issue’s featured article was about Roger Bannister, who had broken the four-minute-mile barrier three months earlier. The cover was a photo of Milwaukee Braves third baseman Eddie Mathews. Michael Jordan holds the record for the most appearances on the cover of SI, with 50 covers. The team that’s been honored the most times is the New York Yankees, with a record 71. Over 23 million people read Sports Illustrated every week. ● The Lady’s Magazine is considered the first significant women’s magazine. First published in London in 1770, it contained essays on female virtues, fashion advice, hints for wives and mothers, medicinal recipes, and embroidery patterns. Upwards of 150,000 American women were reading Godey’s Lady’s Book when the Civil War broke out, making it the most widely circulated magazine in the country.

● On Jan. 9, 1776, writer Thomas Paine publishes his pamphlet "Common Sense," setting forth his arguments in favor of American independence. Originally published anonymously, "Common Sense" is considered one of the most influential pamphlets in American history. ● On Jan. 8, 1916, Rembrandt Bugatti, a sculptor and younger brother of Italian auto designer and manufacturer Ettore Bugatti, commits suicide at the age of 31. Bugatti's sculpture of a dancing elephant was featured as a hood ornament on a 1920s Bugatti Royale auto. ● On Jan. 12, 1926, the two-man radio comedy series "Sam 'n' Henry" (later named "Amos 'n' Andy") debuts in Chicago. Freeman Gosden and Charles Carrell, both white, played characters who were two black men from the Deep South. Over the next 22 years, the show would become the highest-rated comedy in radio history. ● On Jan. 11, 1935, American aviator Amelia Earhart departs Wheeler Field in Honolulu on a solo flight to North America. Hawaiian commercial interests offered a $10,000 award to whoever accomplished the flight first. The next day, after traveling 2,400 miles in 18 hours, Earhart safely landed at Oakland Airport in Oakland, Calif. ● On Jan. 7, 1959, just six days after the fall of the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship in Cuba, U.S. officials recognize the new provisional government of the island nation. Despite fears that Fidel Castro might have communist leanings, the U.S. government believed that it could work with the new regime. ● On Jan. 10, 1961, Dashiell Hammett, author of "The Maltese Falcon," dies. Hammett left school at age 13, eventually landing at Pinkerton's detective agency. He worked as a detective for eight years and turned his experiences into "hard-boiled" crime fiction. ● On Jan. 6, 1975, a crowd of 2,000-plus lines up outside Boston Garden to buy tickets to the rock band Led Zeppelin. Someone pried open the Garden's locked doors around midnight, and soon hundreds of beerdrinking, bottle-throwing Led Zeppelin fans had the run of the arena.

It was renamed in 1897 and remained such until 2001 when Rosie O’Donnell became editorial director and changed the title to Rosie. Rosie lasted a little over a year. Female baby boomers may remember Betsy McCall paper dolls printed in McCall’s beginning in May, 1951. ● We started reading Better Homes and Gardens in 1922, Ladies’ Home Journal in 1883, Good Housekeeping in 1885, Redbook in 1903, Woman’s Day in 1931, followed by Family Circle in 1932. ● Adolescent girls got their very own magazine in 1944, when Seventeen hit the stands, bringing fashion, beauty, and dating tips. Early cover girls included Carol Lynley, Twiggy, Cybil Shepherd, Olga Korbut, and a 13-year-old Brooke Shields. ● The first issue of TV Guide was released in April of 1953, a comprehensive listing of the week’s television programs, TV-related news, celebrity interviews, program reviews, and crossword puzzles. Actress Lucille Ball was on the cover holding her newborn son, Desi Arnaz, Jr., whose birth had been written into the storyline of the popular sitcom I Love Lucy. ● In March of 1974, you could have purchased the inaugural issue of People magazine for 35 cents. The beautiful 29-yearold Mia Farrow was on the cover, the star of the upcoming movie The Great Gatsby. In 1985, the magazine introduced their new feature “Sexiest Man Alive,” with 29-year-old Mel Gibson capturing the first title. Since then, People has created their “World’s Most Beautiful People” and “Best & Worst Dressed” special issues. About 47 million people read People every week. ● heir income from advertising (the other half from subscriptions and single copy sales), a few magazines do not accept advertising. The answer is: “He has been the host of the game show Jeopardy! since 1984.” Who is Alex Trebek? Let’s take a closer look at this interesting “category”! ● Alex Trebek’s father immigrated from Ukraine as a young child, settling in Ontario with his family. His marriage to a FrenchCanadian woman produced Alex in 1940. When Alex graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in philosophy in 1961, he used his experience from the college’s English Debating Society to land a job in broadcasting. The first step in his famous career was as a newscaster and sportscaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Company, Canada’s premier network at that time. ● In 1966, Trebek made a dramatic change from the journalism realm to hosting game shows. His first gig was the Canadian game show Reach for the Top, a position he held for seven years. In 1973, Trebek crossed the border to host his first U.S. game show, NBC’s The Wizard of Odds. The Wizard was short-lived, however, and the following year, Trebek became host of High Rollers. Between High Rollers and his selection as the new host of Jeopardy! in 1984, he had added Double Dare, The $128,000 Question, and Pitfall to his resume. ● After three years of hosting Jeopardy!, in 1987, Trebek added another game show to his schedule, Classic Concentration, hosting both shows simultaneously. In 1991, he made history by serving as the host to three game shows at once, when he took over as the host of To Tell the Truth. By the end of that year, Concentration and Truth had ended their series, and Trebek was back to one program. ● Jeopardy! has won 30 Emmy Awards, and Alex Trebek has been awarded five Emmys for Outstanding Game Show Host. During the 20042005 season, contestant Ken Jennings set the record for the most consecutive games, winning 74 games in a row, with earnings of more than $2.5 million. Speaking about Jennings’ streak, Alex said, “I spent more time with him than I did with my wife during that period.” ● Trebek films Jeopardy! two days a week, arriving at the studio around 6:30 AM. Five shows are taped each day, ending about 4:30 PM. About 25 million viewers tune into the program each week.

You can find his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame near that of Ann-Margret and Vincent Price. Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto features Trebek’s maple leaf. ● Trebek says he does a crossword puzzle every day in an attempt to stave off the dangers of Alzheimer’s Disease. Not surprisingly, he’s fluent in French, but he also speaks some German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. He and his wife own a 700-acre thoroughbred horse farm, Creston Farms, near Templeton, California. It’s rumored that he will retire from Jeopardy! at the end of his 32nd season in 2016. Trebek offers this advice to others, “Take your job seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously.”

JANUARY EVENTS There are lots of things to celebrate during the month of January! Let’s take a look at a few things taking place this month. ● January is National Polka Music Month. It commemorates a genre of dance music that had its origins in the mid-1800s in Bohemia, which is now part of today’s Czech Republic. The word “polka” has its origins in the Czech language word pulka, meaning “half-step,” denoting the quick shift from one foot to the other. The polka was introduced into ballrooms in Prague in 1835 and by 1840, it had spread to Paris. A variety of instruments are played in traditional polka music, depending on the culture, including the clarinet, trumpet, accordion, banjo, and the tuba, whose “oom-pah” notes are often associated with the polka. The state of Wisconsin has designated the polka its official state dance, and “The Beer Barrel Polka” is played during the seventh inning stretch at the Milwaukee Brewers games and at half-time during the Milwaukee Bucks games.

With the New Year coming soon, we have an opportunity to make some resolutions for changes in 2014. Even if we don't typically make resolutions, there are some that are worthwhile to consider. Here are a few: --Is your paperwork in order? If you have an ongoing claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs, keep everything in a file, newest on top. Do you have a list of your personal information, including date of birth, list of places and dates you served (include names of personnel you remember from then to jog your memory later, if necessary), DD-214 or equivalent, marriage certificate, children's birth certificates and lifeinsurance policy? If anything should happen to you, make it easier for your survivors: Have copies (print out online) of Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes, Claim for One Sum Payment Government Life Insurance, Claim for Monthly Payments National Service Life Insurance and Application for Standard Government Headstone or Marker. Gather all this information and keep it all in one place. --If you're not a member of a veterans service group, like American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars, join up. If you are a member, step forward and participate. Consider projects that would help other veterans and propose them to the group. Be an example: Set up regular dates to volunteer at the closest VA medical center. --Make a health goal and take small steps toward it on a regular basis. --If you have a mental-health concern but haven't sought treatment, stop trying to deal with it by yourself. Whether you have depression, possible PTSD or suicidal thoughts, there is help. There's no stigma attached to looking for a fix. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what others think or say. Your first responsibility is to yourself and being the best you can be.

This delicious breakfast strata can be prepared the night before and go from refrigerator to oven the next morning. 8 ounces thinly sliced deli ham 3 cups reduced-fat (2 percent) milk 7 large eggs 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves Salt Pepper 1 loaf (12-ounce) French bread, cut into 1/4-inch slices 8 ounces Cheddar cheese, shredded 1 tablespoon snipped fresh chives 1. Spray 2-quart baking dish with cooking spray. Line dish with ham. 2. In large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, mustard, thyme, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper until well-blended. 3. Arrange half of bread slices, overlapping slightly, on bottom of prepared dish. Pour half of milk mixture over bread. Sprinkle with half of Cheddar. Repeat layering. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour or up to overnight. 4. Preheat oven to 350 F. Remove plastic wrap and bake strata 50 to 55 minutes or until golden and knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 5 minutes. Garnish with chives. Serves 6.

Can Outdoor Furniture Outlast Winter? Q: My brother purchased new outdoor furniture for his deck this summer, some nice cedar chairs and end tables. But I'm astounded that he hasn't yet taken in or covered his new furniture yet. Even though we haven't had snow yet, the temperature change alone must be taking its toll. Should I warn him about leaving his expensive furniture outside in winter? -- Carey in Chicopee, Mass. A: I think warning him is a bit strong, particularly in this case. Cedar furniture designed for outdoor use can be

very resilient in most weather, something the dealer may have told your brother when he purchased the set. You can bring it up as part of a conversation about the furniture by asking if it's all-weather, and letting your brother tell you all about it. Considering how much quality cedar furniture costs, he's likely pretty proud of his purchase. Cedar outdoor furniture is desirable to many people. It's a durable wood, doesn't easily warp or rot, and resists insects. Unfinished cedar furniture starts out as a natural reddish color, which over time fades to gray as wind and weather season the wood. Owners who prefer the warmer reddish color can apply a wood sealer, or enhance the color using a wood stain. Paint or finishing oils aren't typically used with cedar furniture, since they can trap moisture, encouraging rot. Your brother can clean his furniture a few times a year with soap and water, and should avoid using a pressure

YOUR AD HERE washer or harsh solvents. If he's concerned about temperature extremes or ice and snow building up on the furniture, he can cover it or store it during the winter. It's one thing to read about the scams that are aimed at seniors -- and quite another to know someone who has been a victim. A good friend of mine recently learned that his very elderly mother had been giving money to scammers for a period of time. Needless to say, the whole family is in shock. How it began, no one is certain, but somehow scammers contacted his mother with enough of a sob story that she gave them money. Soon they called back, and yes, she gave them more. Then the scammers apparently gave out her name and phone number, and very soon this elderly woman was being called day and night -and giving money to multiple scammers. I imagine that she became fearful because of all the constant phone calls, and at some point she stopped answering the phone. Unable to reach her, one of her children called the police who went by on a welfare check. While the police were there, some of the scammers called. That's when the whole story came out. By the time they were cut off, scammers had taken nearly $200,000 from this senior. The family will never get the money back and the scammers likely will never be found. It's far too easy to become a victim of scammers who want your money. All you have to do is say "yes" one time. If you give them money just once, hoping they'll go away, the opposite will happen, and you'll be called more frequently and the pressure to give more will increase. Your name will be given to others who will do the same. If you've been pulled in by scammers, call the police now. Don't wait.

A: There are several excellent price guides available, but my personal pick is the "Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards" edited by Tom Bartsch, and published by Krause Books. This guide covers sets printed between 1863 and 1980 including even minorleague players. There are descriptions introducing the various sets, full, updated checklists and values for three condition grades. Best of all, it is easy to use, and the prices seem to reflect the current marketplace. It is $29.99 and well worth it. Antibiotic Treatment Helps Some With COPD

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: On the local news, they were talking to a doctor about using an antibiotic for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD. The name of the drug is azithromycin. What do you know about this, and what is your opinion? -- D.L. ANSWER: COPD encompasses two lung diseases, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is destruction of the millions of tiny air sacs in the lungs. Through those structures oxygen passes into the blood, and carbon dioxide passes out of it. Severe shortness of breath on slight physical activity is the hallmark of emphysema. Chronic bronchitis is inflammation of the airways, the bronchi. Along with inflammation, the airways fill with thick mucus. A constant cough is the main sign of chronic bronchitis. Both conditions usually exist together. Azithromycin, the antibiotic you mentioned, has been suggested as a daily treatment at a reduced dose for those with COPD who have many flare-ups of their illness. A flare-up makes breathing exceedingly difficult and sometimes requires hospitalization to control. Flare-ups add to the destruction of normal lung tissue. Viruses are often the cause. However, the inflamed and mucus-filled airways also are hosts to many bacteria, whose numbers rise during a flare-up. They make a contribution to symptoms and lung destruction.

Other studies suggest that a three-day-a-week dose of azithromycin is equally effective. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter is 58 years old. For the past 10 years, she has heard her heart pulsating. It's a loud and disturbing noise that she hears from time to time. She has had an MRI and other heart-related tests. The results are normal. What is your opinion? -- E.G. ANSWER: Pulsatile tinnitus is ear noise, usually heard in one ear, that's synchronous with the heartbeat. The noise can arise in the carotid arteries in the neck, arteries in the vicinity of the ear, malformed vessels in the head and neck or disturbed blood flow through veins of the head and neck. Impacted earwax is another cause. Your daughter has had many tests that should have uncovered blood vessel problems. I'm at a loss to suggest a cause of her tinnitus. If her hearing is not as acute as it was, that might be the problem. Has she seen an ear, nose and throat doctor? If not, she should. An ENT doctor would pick up on that. She might be able to tolerate tinnitus at night if she turns a bedside radio to soothing music.
