● It’s most probable that the Scandinavians invented the sport of skating by strapping ox or elk leg bones to their boots with leather straps. Five-thousand-year-old skates have been found in Finland, and were a mode of transportation rather than a form of entertainment. Metal blades didn’t come along until the 13th century. ● The game of ice hockey originated in eastern Canada in the mid-1800s. The fi rst organized indoor hockey game was played in March of 1875 at Montreal’s Victoria skating rink in front of 40 spectators. ● Manitoba-born Mervyn “Red” Dutton was serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France during World War I when an exploding shell fi lled his leg with 48 fragments of shrapnel. When doctors informed him that his very life depended on amputating the leg, he refused, citing his love of hockey. His leg was placed at a 30-degree angle for the next 14 months. Dutton recovered, going on to play pro hockey for 15 years and serving as president of the NHL. He was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1958. turn the page for more!

His list included the creation of Medicare/ Medicaid, Head Start, the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act. ● On Dec. 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente, future Hall of Fame baseball player, is killed along with four others when the cargo plane in which he is traveling crashes off the coast of Puerto Rico. At the end of September, Clemente had gotten his 3,000th hit in the final game of the season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. ● On Jan. 2, 1980, in response to the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter asks the Senate to postpone action on the SALT II nuclear weapons treaty. Keeping Your Pet Safe This Holiday As we move into the peak of the holiday season, it's more important than ever to make sure your pets are safe, stressfree and healthy. Here are a few tips to help your pets have a happy holiday: ● Avoid using decorations like tinsel, which can be ingested by cats and puppies attracted to its shine and crinkly sound. Hang small ornaments and glass balls high on the tree and place larger, sturdier ornaments on the lower part. ● Cover electrical cords and light strands to prevent pets from chewing on them. A piece of PVC pipe or a thick piece of spare carpet, or even duct tape, can cover exposed runs along or behind the tree. ● Before a party or large get-together, create a safe haven for your pets in a room closed off from the rest of the house. Put their bed and blankets, toys, water and food in there, and check on them regularly.

● Make sure candies and chocolates stay off the fl oor so that pets can't ingest them. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs. ● Use toddler gates to keep your pets out of areas like the kitchen, so they don't get into holiday baking. ● Make sure to keep pets on a regular feeding, walking and play schedule. This will help them deal with the more stressful period of the holidays. ● Monitor your pet's behavior during the holidays. If they appear lethargic, yelp in pain when you touch their stomach, nip at you when you reach for them, or show other signs of stress or illness, contact your veterinarian immediately. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com, or write to Paw's Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. ● In Singapore, one of the colorful customs is training birds for singing competitions. It's not always just a hobby, though; for some, it's a serious -- and costly -business. A single well-trained bird might sell for as much as $60,000. ● If you're an oenophile -- that's an aficionado of wine -- you probably won't be surprised to learn that as the cost of a wine goes up, so does a drinker's appreciation of that wine. It seems that it's not all about the quality of the vintage, though: In a recent study, tasters were offered two samples of the same wine, but each sample was labeled with a different price. The tasters overwhelmingly preferred the more expensive vintage. ● Only one-fifth of homes in America are not airconditioned. In the sweltering South, a mere 5 percent lack that vital amenity. ● Those who study such things say that the wind power in an average hurricane is equivalent to 1.5 trillion watts. That's the same amount of power that is generated by fully half of the entire world's generating capacity. ● The works of Agatha Christie have been translated more times into other languages than those of any other author in history. ● Many people see dogs as doing heroic work in tandem with law enforcement and the military, but they're not the only animals put to such use. In Mozambique, sniffer rats are being used to find unexploded land mines so experts can disarm them. They're known as HeroRATs. Thought for the Day: "To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first. And, whatever you hit, call it the target." -Ashleigh Brilliant

Anders was 86 years old! He had actually competed in Chamonix in 1924, but a calculation error put him in fourth place. Fifty years later, a Norwegian sports historian noticed the blunder and Anders was awarded his medal by the daughter of the actual fourth place fi nisher, who had taken the bronze home years before. ● It might look like Alpine ski jumpers soar miles above the crowd, but in reality, they are rarely more than about 18 feet (5.5 m) above the ground. Jumpers reach speeds of up to 65 mph (104 km/hr). ● The biathlon, which combines crosscountry skiing and rifl e marksmanship, was originally a military training exercise. Over the 12.5-mile (20-km) course, the athlete must switch from arduous skiing with a rifl e on his/her back to the intense focus of shooting. The sport wasn’t an offi cial part of the Olympics until 1960 for men and 1992 for women. ● While Alaska’s Iditarod is probably the most famous dog sled race, the 1,049-mile (1,688-km) trip from Anchorage to Nome is not the longest. That honor belongs to the Beringia Trail in Russia, where the world’s longest race takes place on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The trail is 1,270 miles (2,044 km) long in an area where 29 active volcanoes dot the landscape.

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD: LUCILLE BALL For all of those readers who loved Lucy, Tidbits offers some information you might not have known about this madcap redhead, a woman who fi rmly stated, “I would rather regret the things that I have done than the things that I have not.” ● The death of Lucy’s father when she was three changed her comfortable life into one of diffi culties. Her mother found work in a factory and remarried. Her new husband didn’t care much for children, and moved Lucy’s mother out of state, leaving Lucy and her brother behind with grandparents. Reunited with her mother at age 11, Lucy eventually convinced her to allow her to enroll in a New York City dramatic arts school. At age 15, she met fellow student Better Davis there. The overly-shy Lucy was so nervous on stage that the school’s headmaster advised her mother, “Lucy’s wasting her time and ours. She’s too shy and reticent to put her best foot forward.”

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Meigs & Mason Counties LUCILLE BALL (continued) ● Although Lucy’s real name was Lucille Désirée Ball, when she secured work as a fashion model at age 17, she changed it to Diane Belmont, taking the name of New York’s Belmont racetrack. Lucy modeled fur coats for Hattie Carnegie, one of the leading designers of the 1930s. She was enjoying a blossoming career when she was suddenly struck ill with rheumatoid arthritis and spent the next two years relearning how to walk. ● At age 21, this natural-born brunette dyed her hair blonde and moved to Hollywood, and landed a job as a dancer with Metro-Goldwyn Studios as a “Goldwyn Girl.” Her movie career was launched in 1933 with a part in Roman Scandals. Although Lucy is best remembered for her work in television, she appeared in 72 movies during her career. ● During the filming of 1940’s Dance, Girl, Dance, Lucy was introduced to castmate Desi Arnaz, a handsome 23-yr-old Cuban musician. They were married shortly afterward. In 1942, because there were so many blondes in Hollywood, Lucy dyed her hair her trademark red, hoping it would make her stand out. ● It was actually a radio program that launched Lucy into television. CBS Radio’s My Favorite Husband was so popular, it was developed for television, and I Love Lucy was born. It premiered in 1951 when Lucy was 40 years old, three months after she gave birth to her first child, Lucie. The sitcom quickly became a hit. Two years later, Lucy was expecting her second child, and the pregnancy was written into the script. Her son Desi, Jr. was born the same day the episode of the birth of “Little Ricky” was aired. Over 71% of television viewers watched that episode, higher numbers than those who watched President Eisenhower’s inauguration ceremony. The very first issue of TV Guide, which debuted in 1953, featured Lucy and her son on the cover. For four out of its six years, I Love Lucy was the number one show in America.

LUCILLE BALL (continued) ● After 20 years of marriage, Lucy and Arnaz divorced. Two years later, Lucy became the fi rst woman to run a major television studio, one that produced several successful series. She was nominated for 13 Emmy Awards, ● “A man who correctly guesses a woman’s age may be smart, but he’s not very bright.” – Lucille Ball.

ELLIS ISLAND January 1 is Ellis Island Day, memorializing the portal through which more than 12 million immigrants entered the U.S. between 1892 and 1954. Let’s learn more about this facility that was the gateway to the new world for so many. ● Ellis Island hasn’t always been known by that name. The Mohegan Indians dubbed it Gull Island, while early colonists called it Oyster Island. When pirates and convicts were hanged there in the mid-1700s, a tool known as a gibbet was used, and the island became known as Gibbet Island. New York businessman Sam Ellis purchased it in 1776, and ran a tavern and picnic area there. ● In 1808, the U.S. Government bought the island from Ellis’ heirs for $10,000 in order to establish a defense system to protect New York City. A fort was built, which, during the Civil War, housed prisoners, as well as weapons and ammunition for the Union Army. Ellis Island became the fi rst federal immigration station in 1890. ● The island, located just off the New Jersey coast near the Statue of Liberty, was originally 3.3 acres, but was expanded to 27.5 acres as landfi ll was added to the site, along with excess dirt from the excavation of New York City’s subway system. A new wooden structure opened on New Year’s Day of 1892, with a 15-yearold Irish girl named Annie Moore processed as the very fi rst immigrant. Five-and-a-half years later, a fi re raged through the complex, burning it to the ground, taking with it all of the U.S. immigration records dating back to 1855. A new fi reproof structure opened in 1900.

Should You Pay Off Mortgage Early? Paying off a mortgage early can be as easy as making an extra principal payment each month. That money goes to the end of the mortgage term, and cancels the interest that would be due then. Making extra payments, especially early in a mortgage, can have stunning results, with years shaved off the length of the mortgage. When it comes to paying off a mortgage early, however, there are those who are strongly on one side of the fence or the other. While some claim it's a great idea, others say it's not. Here are the arguments on both sides. Don't pay off a mortgage early: --You'll lose the mortgage interest deduction on your taxes. --You'll miss out on the low mortgage rates available now. --You may be hit with pre-payment penalties. (Read the fi ne print on your loan papers, especially if you have a refi nance. Does it say that you'll incur a penalty if you pay off early?)

--You won't have spare cash for emergencies if you spend it all on extra mortgage payments. Pay off a mortgage early: --The mortgage is typically the largest monthly payment a consumer makes. Once the mortgage is paid off, you'll have the room to pursue other fi nancial interests, including putting it all in savings or paying off other debt. --You'll own your home. As long as you keep up with taxes, insurance and repairs, the home is yours. The truth is that your individual situation will indicate whether it's good for you to pay off a mortgage. Some thoughts to consider: If you hope to retire at a certain time and know your retirement income will make it hard for you to continue making mortgage payments, it makes sense to pay off the mortgage while your income is still adequate to do so. If you can save for your children's college, put money into savings and still put extra money on your mortgage, it makes sense to pay early. Go online to mortgage calculators and do a few "what if" scenarios to see how many years can be shaved off your mortgage with varying extra payments. Even an extra $50 will have visible results. At the time of this writing, it's being discussed whether to cancel the mortgage interest tax deduction on the Schedule A. Keep an eye on this. Your real savings from having a mortgage interest deduction depend on your tax bracket.

First- and second-class passengers were not subject to the medical exam, with the assumption that they were less likely to be a medical burden to the government. Because third-class “steerage” passengers traveled in the lower level of ships under more unsanitary conditions, they were required to undergo the three-to-fi ve-hour inspection, which included answering 29 questions. ● Those who did not pass the medical exam were ones with a contagious disease, who were excluded from entry. Ellis Island gained a reputation as the “Island of Tears” for those who were turned away, while in actuality, only 2% of all immigrants were denied entry during all the years of operation. ● During the Island’s peak years, 1900 to 1914, 5,000 to 10,000 people were passing through every day. After World War I, the U.S. established embassies worldwide, enabling immigrants to complete paperwork and medical exams in their own countries, and by 1924, only those with paperwork problems were sent to Ellis Island. During World War II, it was a detention center for captured enemy seamen, and was also used as a Coast Guard training facility. In 1954, it offi cially closed and remained abandoned until 1976, when it was opened to the public on a limited basis for tours. The structure underwent a massive $160 million restoration during the 1980s, and now receives 2 million visitors a year. ● Many well-known immigrants were processed through Ellis Island, including Irving Berlin, Max Factor, Rudolph Valentino, and Cary Grant, who arrived at age 16. The family of entertainer Bob Hope, who arrived at age 4 with his mother and four brothers in 1907, has established a memorial library in his name in the restored facility.

Certain Polyps Raise Colon Cancer Risk

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please help. I have had two colonoscopies with 10 polyps found -- half and half, both kinds. I noticed on my medical bill that I am at high risk. I was told that some new medicine might be available soon. I'm very scared. What could help me? -- R.H. ANSWER: A polyp is a growth of cells projecting from the lining of a structure. In this case, the structure is the colon. Close to 90 percent of polyps do not become cancers. Fifty percent of the population older than 60 has at least one polyp. Ten percent of polyps are adenomatous polyps, ones with a potential of becoming cancer. I take it that some of your polyps were of this variety, and that's why you are at "high risk." Having those polyps removed eliminates the present cancer risk. Adenomatous polyp size is one factor involved in judging these polyps' threat. Those larger than 2 cm (0.8 inches) have a 40 percent chance of transforming into cancer. The microscopic appearance of these polyps' cells is given the designation of highgrade or low-grade. High-grade cells also increase the risk of cancer. Actually, you are sitting pretty. You've had all your polyps removed. The fact that some of yours put you into the category of high risk only means that the doctor will work out for you a schedule for future colonoscopies. Those scope exams will disclose if any new polyps have formed. You are less likely to develop colon cancer than are people who have never had such an exam. I don't

know about the medicine you speak of. Cutting back on red and processed meats (hot dogs and other luncheon meats), losing weight, decreasing the fat in your diet, cutting back on alcohol consumption, increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat and increasing dietary fi ber are things that diminish the likelihood of colon cancer. I have to be candid. Some authorities say these changes are not as protective as they're made out to be. They are, however, conducive to good general health. The booklet on colon cancer explains this common ailment in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 505W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had genital herpes for many years. I take a lysine pill every day, which can be bought over the counter at all drugstores. I get an outbreak maybe once or twice a year. Doctors don't know this, I guess, and they prescribe medicine rather than use home remedies. -- R.Z. ANSWER: Lysine treatment for herpes infections, including cold sores, is widely known. The fl y in the ointment is that, for most, it doesn't work successfully as it has for you. There is some scientifi c basis for lysine. It's an amino acid, one of the building blocks for proteins. Lysine blocks the action of arginine, another amino acid, necessary for herpes viruses to replicate. That's the theoretical reason for using lysine.

Make a holiday season breakfast extra special with this stuffed French toast recipe featuring oranges and fresh pecans, which are abundant this time of year. The whole family can participate in the preparation the night before, from beating eggs to spooning the cream cheese mixture into pockets in the French bread. When you wake up in the morning, just pop the dish in the oven, heat up the simple and mouthwatering orange-pecan maple syrup topping, and enjoy leisurely family time around the table. EASY OVERNIGHT STUFFED FRENCH TOAST 1 8-ounce package low-fat or regular cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup chopped pecans 1/3 cup sugar 3 tablespoons orange zest from a fresh orange 1 large loaf French bread (day-old bread with a softer crust works best) 6 eggs, beaten 3/4 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Maple syrup for Pecan Maple Syrup (recipe follows) First, read through the steps and choose appropriate jobs for every family member. Let's begin! To assemble: 1. Blend the cream cheese, 1/2 cup of the pecans, sugar and 2 tablespoons orange zest in a medium bowl. 2. An adult or older child should cut the loaf into about 10 to 12 1-inch slices. Then cut an opening in one crust side of each slice, two-thirds the way down, to form a pocket. Tuck a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture into each pocket and press to close. Arrange in two rows in a 9-inchby-13-inch greased baking pan. 3. Combine the beaten eggs, milk and vanilla in a medium bowl. Pour over the bread, making sure it is soaked with egg mixture. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight. To bake and serve: 1. In the morning, preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Remove foil and bake for 45 minutes until lightly golden. Serve warm Pecan Maple Syrup (below) drizzled over individual servings. Makes 5-6 two-slice servings. Pecan Maple Syrup: Over low heat, warm the desired amount of maple syrup with the remaining chopped pecans and orange zest. A New Year’s Message from Dr. Joey D. Wilcoxon 990 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, OH “Celebrating our 28th Year in Practice” My office and I want to wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year!

2012 brought big changes to our office. We have implemented many new technologies and procedures. I am excited to announce that we acquired a new state of the art Digital X-ray system. Now X-rays at this office are available within 5 seconds of having performed them, which means no waiting on your part, frustrating trips to the hospital, and waiting for reports. We have expanded our ability to order MRI or CT scans at all facilities in the tri-state area which facilitates cooperation between your medical provider and this office. I am also excited that we now are performing acupuncture therapy and are seeing very positive results. Acupuncture has thrived for 5000 years and is very effective along with being painless! When I say painless…..I mean painless! In addition to acupuncture, we are now offering laser therapy for pain relief as well as ultrasound therapy. Our massage therapist, Hannah Knight, is simply amazing and her practice has grown by leaps and bounds. You owe it to yourself to experience the wonders of massage therapy for tight and sore muscles, arthritis, stress, fibromyalgia as well as a laundry list of other conditions. I wish to extend to you an offer so that you can start the year off on the right foot. For the month of January, I am offering a free consultation that you can sit down one on one with the Doctor and discuss your health conditions and see if there is anything we can do to help. If you’re like most Americans concerned about their health, you are probably wondering if there are alternative means to gain better health without taking drugs and their possible harmful side-effects. There’s an old saying to the effect that if you say something too many times, even though you’re being nice, you’ll start to sound like a broken record. It may be true, but broken record or not, I want to thank you for placing your trust in us. Our greatest joy is your total satisfaction with our service, and this message is to assure you that situation surely won’t change! We are totally delighted with your confidence in us. My father always told me that good customers are like good friends: “Care for them above all else for they are treasures without equal.” Sure do mean that! I wish you the best of health for the following New Year!!!
