TIDBITS® TAKES MEASURE by Janet Spencer

On July 14, 1868, Alvin Fellows of Connecticut patented the retractable measuring tape which had a button that would lock the measuring tape in place and allow it to roll up inside the case when released, a design still used today. Fellows’ measuring tape made it easier to measure things, so come along with Tidbits as we look at ways things are measured.

• Long ago, the width of the thumb equaled one inch, a handy measurement for carpenters and tailors. A rule of thumb came to mean any simple method that was based on practicality. • The Romans decreed the width of the thumb was one inch, and that 12 thumbs equaled one foot-length. The Latin word ‘uncia’ meaning one-twelfth was shortened to ‘unch’ and gave us our inch. An English law decreed the inch should equal the length of 3 barleycorns. • One Sunday in the year 1120, King Henry I of England lined up the first 12 men leaving church and measured the total length of their feet. He divided that by 12, and called the result the official foot. (cont’d next page)

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties RULE OF THUMB, cont’d • The Anglo-Saxon word for a man’s waist measurement or girth was ‘gyrd,’ which became our yard. In the 1600s Queen Elizabeth I decreed it should equal the length of her arm. 1. RELIGION: What are the first three words of the Old Testament? 2. MEDICAL: What is the common name for dentition? 3. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: How many colors are in a rainbow? 4. GEOGRAPHY: How many countries make up Great Britain? 5. PSYCHOLOGY: What kind of fear is represented in heliophobia? 6. MOVIES: What do the seven dwarves do for a living in Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”? 7. LANGUAGE: What letter of the alphabet doesn’t appear in any of the names of the U.S. states? 8. HISTORY: Which was the first of the 13 original colonies to be admitted to the United States? 9. MUSIC: What is Paul McCartney’s middle name? 10. • The Romans noted that a two-step pace of a marching man was about five feet. 1,000 paces, or 5,000 feet, became their mile, which they called ‘milia passuum’ meaning 1,000 paces. However, farms in England were measured in furrow-longs, or furlongs, which equaled 660 feet. In 1575 Elizabeth I proclaimed that the mile should henceforth be 5,280 feet, so that it could easily be divided into 8 furlongs. • The Latin word for pound, ‘libra,’ gave us our abbreviation ‘lb.’ The Italian ounce was called an ‘onzia,’ leaving us with ‘oz.’ • ‘Tun’ was the early Anglo-Saxon word for tub or vat, giving us our ton. • The short ton is 2,000 lbs. The long ton is 2,240 lbs. The metric ton is 1,000 kilograms, or 2,204.6 lbs. Why is a long ton 2,240 lbs? Because when London merchants sold 2,000 lbs. of wine, the 8 oak barrels the wine was kept in weighed 30 lbs each, so the total weight of wine and barrels was 2,240 lbs.

MORE MEASUREMENT ORIGINS • The Egyptians called 200 paces a ‘stade.’ Greeks revised it to ‘stadion,’ which became a standard length for Olympic foot races. Today races are held in a stadium. • An early English system for measuring grains used the ‘measure-full.’ Eight measures equaled a peck, and 16 pecks equaled a ‘hlot.’ Eventually the ‘hlot’ became ‘a lot’, so when you say you have ‘a lot’ of peaches, you’re talking about 16 pecks! • The tuffet Miss Muffett sat on was used to measure corn.

807 East Main Street Jackson, OH 45640 740-286-3607 Open Mon-Fri 8:00-5:00 Sat 8:30-2:30 Old Aquarium Needs a Good Cleaning

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A few days ago, my older brother found an empty fish aquarium on the side of the road. It’s a pretty nice one with a wooden cabinet and a big, dirty tank. Is it safe to reuse and fill with goldfish? -- Jackie in Tulsa, Okla. DEAR JACKIE: If the glass isn’t damaged and the aquarium equipment -- like the light or the aerator -is in good shape or can be replaced, then you should be able to reuse it. If you know someone with a lot of experience keeping larger fish aquariums, have him or her look at it and make sure it’s OK. If so, then do a really good cleaning on the tank and any equipment that will go into it. First, remove the equipment and any old gravel from the tank. Fill the tank with cool or warm water (don’t use hot water) and let it soak for a day. Pour out the water and scrub with a lint-free cloth or a sponge to

clear away dirt, mold and mineral scale from the glass and bottom of the tank. Next, mix white vinegar with water, about half and half, and wash out the tank again to kill many of the microbes that may be in there. Vinegar also helps to loosen any mineral scale on the glass. Rinse well. Now you can begin slowly building your aquarium. Set it up as if fish are already in it, with gravel on the bottom. Fill with water, add water conditioner and special supplements like Bactria, and let the aerator run for at least two days. Meantime, read up on how to maintain a large aquarium, which takes much more work than a fishbowl, and decide what fish you want to keep in it. You should add them one at a time at first as you get used to managing the larger water system. Send your questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Welcome to Goose Tips! Ice Cream Bread. Yes, you heard me correctly---

ICE CREAM BREAD

All is right in the world. Ice cream and self rising flour have made beautiful food love and made delicious babies. Perfectly soft bread babies. Seriously, you MUST stop what you are doing right now and make this. I used Butter Pecan Ice Cream because that’s my fav, but you can use whatever flavor you want. This recipe makes one 8 x 4 loaf. You need: 2 cups Ice Cream, softened 1 1/2 cups Self-Rising Flour Preheat your oven to 350. Spray and flour a 8x4 loaf pan. In a medium bowl mix the ice cream and flour together until just combined. Scoop into the loaf pan and smooth out. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick stuck in the loaf comes out with a few crumbs stuck to it. Remove from pan and allow to cool (if you can wait that long)! When you decide to dine out, gather around our table at the goose! Thanks to you we are celebrating 5 years, now serving beer and wine and wild game every Friday. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t! ---Kat Brabham, owner 740-388-0565

NAUTICAL MEASUREMENTS • A knot is one nautical mile per hour. A nautical mile is 1/60th of 1 degree of the Earth’s surface, or 1.150779 land miles. Ships carried a line wound on a reel. A chip of wood on the end of the line was allowed to drag in the water behind the ship, causing the line to unreel. The line was knotted at intervals of 47’3” and the line was allowed to drag for exactly 28 seconds. (47’3” are to 1.150779 miles what 28 seconds are to one hour.) If the line unwound to the 5th knot in 28 seconds, the ship was moving at 5 knots per hour. • A fathom (measuring depth) was fingertip to outstretched fingertip, and now equals 6 feet. • The film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea should have been called 20,000 Feet Under the Sea. A league equals 3 miles. 20,000 leagues would equal 60,000 miles, equal to nearly three times around the earth. At no place is the ocean deeper than 36,000 feet.

FULL MEASURE • The English adopted this system for measuring liquids: a handful was a jigger, two jiggers were a jack, two jacks were a jill, two jills made a cup, two cups made a pint, two pints made a quart, two quarts made a pottle, two pottles made a gallon, two gallons made a peck, two pecks made a half bushel, two half bushels made a bushel, two bushels made a cask, and two casks made a barrel. • In the 1600s King Charles I lived lavishly and spent the royal treasury. To raise money, he tried to increase taxes paid on liquids. Parliament vetoed him. So he reduced the size of the jack and jill, while leaving the taxes the same. To get around the tax, people stopped using the jack and jill as measurements, and they made up a rhyme: “Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water / Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after.” The crown refers to the English unit of money.

His portraits began to go out of style after the 1630s, when his human figures were criticized as being coarse and indecorous. • On July 19, 1779, Massachusetts launches a 4,000man naval expedition consisting of 19 warships, 24 transport ships and more than 1,000 militiamen to capture a 750-man British garrison on the Penobscot Peninsula. The failed expedition was considered the worst naval disaster in American history until the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. • On July 18, 1914, convicted on meager evidence of murdering two Salt Lake City policemen, Wobbly Joe Hill is sentenced to be executed in Utah. Hill was a member of the International Workers of the World, called Wobblies. Salinger’s only novel, “The Catcher in the Rye,” is published by Little, Brown. The book, about a confused teenager disillusioned by the adult world, was an instant hit and was taught in high schools for half a century. The 31-year-old Salinger had worked on the novel for a decade. • On July 14, 1974, U.S. Army Gen. Carl Spaatz, fighter pilot, dies in Washington, D.C., at age 83. For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 A DISASTER In Baltimore in 1904, a store caught fire. When the fire spread, the fire chief telegrammed to Washington for help. Help arrived in record time and the people of Baltimore cheered as the fire crew got out their hoses—only to find that their hoses would not fit the hydrants. Help came from Philadelphia, New York, Wilmington, Annapolis, and Altoona, but every fire company discovered the same thing— there was water, but no way to make the connection from hose to hydrant. Most of the business district burned down. A subsequent study found that there were 600 different sizes of hoses and hydrants being used in the U.S. at that time. Obviously, there was a need to standardize measurements.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT

• 300 years ago, the pound was applied to 391 different weights across Europe, and the foot indicated 282 different lengths. Thomas Jefferson, traveling across Europe, found that the mile from country to country could be as short as 3,600 feet or as long as 36,000 feet. Even today, the U.S. uses two kinds of miles, 56 different bushels, eight types of tons, two pounds, and three different ounces. Corn is sold by the bushel, shipped in tons, and stored in cubic feet. A bushel of wheat does not equal a bushel of potatoes or apples. • Our measurements evolved by happenstance. They have no simple formulas, equations, or relationships. For instance, consider the acre. It’s defined as an area that can be plowed in one day with two oxen. To figure acres, you must multiply the width of the land by the length and divide by 43,460. A one-acre square lot measures 208 ft. 8 in. per side. There are 640 acres in a square mile. Easy to remember? Easy to calculate? No way! What we need is a system that makes more sense. • Today more than 25,000 items are covered by national standards, from nuts and bolts to two-by-fours and light bulbs.

BILL DOMM William Henry Domm, better known as Bill, was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, in 1930. He was the son of a minister for the United Church of Canada. Educated at the Ryerson Institute of Technology, he later became a radio broadcaster in Peterborough. In 1979 he became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Canadian House of Commons, representing Peterborough. He served as an MP until his defeat in the 1993 election. Bill Domm took strong stands on several issues, most notably gun control, abortion, capital punishment, and the metric system. Bill Domm was against the metric system. More specifically, he was against the mandatory adoption of the metric system. The liberal federal government of Pierre Trudeau first began implementing the switch to the metric system in Canada in 1970. The Metric Commission was established in 1971 to help facilitate the nationwide change. By the mid-1970s, metric product labelling was introduced. In 1972, the provinces agreed to make all road signs metric by 1977. Not everything went smoothly, however. Bill Domm’s hometown of Peterborough was one of the government’s three test centers for the switch to the metric system. And, led by Bill Domm, Peterborough subsequently became a hotbed of opposition to the switch. The backlash was epic. Public outrage was palpable. There was civil disobedience— carpet sellers defiantly selling product by the yard rather than the meter. There were protests. Citizen indignation filled radio call-in shows and letters-to-the-editor pages. Bill joined forces with 37 other Progressive Conservative Members of Parliament to press the issue. By 1981, gasoline and diesel fuels were required to be dispensed in liters rather than gallons. (continued next page)

• By 1984 when the Metric Commission was disbanded, rules on enforcing metrics were loosened, making it voluntary, and offering businesses the option of selling their goods using either system, or both. However, the “metrification” of the country was not reversed. By the time Bill Domm died in 2000, Canadians were using a mix of metric and Imperial measurements. Since 1976 the law requires that prepacked food products declare their volume in metric units, though Canadian Imperial units are still legally permitted. Milk has been metric since 1980. In 1975 Fahrenheit temperatures were replaced by Celsius. • The use of the metric and Imperial systems varies according to generation. The older generation mostly uses the imperial system, while the younger generation uses the metric system more frequently. • The purpose of the gas station wasn’t to make money selling gas; it was to provoke the government to arrest them for using non-metric methods of dispensing gas so a legal challenge could be brought against the mandatory use of metric. Bill Domm vociferously dared the government to arrest the operators and was frankly disappointed when they did not. He claimed that 79 percent of the gas was dispensed in gallons rather than liters. The government steadfastly ignored the station and it closed after a year.

• In 1983, the 37 Conservatives all contributed funds in order to operate a gas station which dispensed gasoline not only in the required liters but also in the outlawed gallons. Located in Carleton Place, Ontario, it was dubbed the “Freedom to Measure” gas station. Customers were offered the option of purchasing their gas using whatever measuring system they preferred: one pump dispensed in liters and the other in gallons.

THE METRIC SYSTEM The Greek word ‘metron,’ from which we get meter and metric, means ‘a measure.’ Gram is French for ‘weight.’ The metric system is the only system deliberately designed to be easy to learn and simple to use. No other system of measurement links units of length, volume, and mass as the metric system does. The metric system has 7 base units that account for all measurements. Our Imperial system has over 20. Today, the only countries that do not use the metric system are the U.S. and the trend-setting nations of Liberia and Burma. MEASURE FOR MEASURE The metric system was invented in France in 1799. A meter was defined as one tenmillionth of the length of the imaginary line from the North Pole to the Equator as it passes through Paris. (39.37 inches.) It has also been defined as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red light from the isotope Krypton 86, as measured in a vacuum. Today one meter is more accurately measured as the distance travelled by light in a vacuum during 1/299,792,548 of a second. In 1866, the U.S. passed a law that said Americans could use the metric system if they liked. In 1900, Congress was close to adopting the metric system, but then the machinist’s lobby went to work. They painted a picture of complete chaos if the metric system went through. All factories would have to close! Property deeds would be invalidated! All bottles, bushels, and boxes would have to be discarded! Grocery stores would have to shut down! The economy would collapse! None of this was true, but inertia prevailed, and prevails still. SYSTEM SIMPLICITY With metrics, if you know how big an object is, then you can find out what its weight is just by moving the decimal point. Here’s how: (continued next page)

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS A decimeter is 1/10th of a meter. A cubic decimeter equals one liter. A liter of water weighs 1,000 grams. Alexander Graham Bell, arguing for the adoption of the metric system, gave Congressmen an imaginary problem: You have a tank containing 123,456,789 cubic inches of water. You want to know the weight and volume of the water. First you must go to the library to find out how many cubic inches of water are in a gallon and how much a gallon of water weighs. Then you must complete difficult calculations. But if the tank contains 123,456,789 cubic centimeters of water, you need only to move the decimal point over to find out that it holds 123,456.789 liters and that it weighs 123,456.789 kilograms. INCH BY INCH The Army and Marines use metrics. So does NASA. The Olympics have been metric since they began in 1896. The first country in the Western Hemisphere to adopt metrics was Columbia, which explains why cocaine is purchased in grams and kilograms. Your electricity is measured in metric kilowatt hours, and you buy skis in centimeters. The power of your motorcycle is expressed in cubic centimeters, and your medication is dispensed in milligrams. After one speech where a government official vowed that “The inch will never die!” a prometric man arose and asked the speaker to answer the questions that appeared at the beginning of this issue: How many feet in a mile? How many ounces in a gallon? How many acres in a square mile? How much does a quart of water weigh? The speaker was unable to answer any of these questions. Answer: There are 5,280 feet in a mile; 128 ounces in a gallon; 640 acres in a square mile; and water weighs 2.0825 lbs. per quart.

740-379-2863 2158 Cadmus Road, Patriot, OH Just Past Trickling Spring Country Store Open Friday 9 to 5 • Saturday 9 to 4 Ivory Necklace Q: I have an ivory necklace that was given to me by my grandmother. It was originally purchased during the 1920s in Africa. Whom can I contact about it with the intent to possibly sell it? -- Connie, Santa Fe, N.M. A: If you are motivated to sell your ivory necklace, you had better move quickly, since new U.S. laws and restrictions are being considered that would make the sale of ivory unlawful and a felony. This is futile action to save African elephants, as most of the poaching being done is triggered by Chinese demand. Robert Weisblut is founder and president of the International Ivory Society, and he might be able to advise you. Contact is 5001 Old Ocean Blvd., No. 1, Ocean Ridge, FL 33425; and rweisblut@yahoo.com. Q: Recently while helping my mom do some spring cleaning, I found a shoebox containing five Avon bottles from the 1940s and ‘50s. I almost tossed them, but thought I would check with you first. -- Beth, Chesterfield, Mo. A: Avon collecting reached its peak during the 1970s. Even though older and retired Avon bottles still are collectible, the level of activity has dropped off. You might want to contact the National Association of

Avon Collectors, P.O. Box 7006, Kansas City, MO 64113. A second source is a fascinating website, ICollectAvon.net, which features ads, a list of discontinued Avon products and much more. Q: I have a pennant with an image of Dwight Eisenhower and the words “We Still Like Ike.” It is obviously from his re-election campaign in 1956. Is it collectible? -- Sarah, Homestead, Fla. A: Your pennant would retail in the $25 to $40 range, according to “Warman’s Political Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide,” by Enoch L. Nappen and published by Krause Books. Collecting political memorabilia remains one of America’s favorite hobbies. Q: I have a small collection of Coca-Cola items and would like to find a club so I can swap some of the duplicates that I have. Can you help me? -- Steve, Ramona, Calif. A: The Coca-Cola Collectors Club is one of the most active. Contact is PMB 609, 4780 Ashford-Dunwoody Road, Suite A, Atlanta, GA 30338; cocacolaclub.org. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. VA Health-Care Fixes

It was a depressing moment when I read a news release from the Department of Veterans Affairs that disclosed one of the steps being taken to fix the scheduling debacle. It hosted an Industry Day to meet with tech vendors about scheduling-system acquisitions. The VA is looking for an “innovative scheduling product” to add to the health records system. The meeting will let officials know what they need to include in an eventual solicitation for the product. How long will it take to solicit, buy, install and implement? Then a newer VA news release said it’s “now contacted approximately 70,000 veterans across the country to get them off of wait lists and into clinics for medical appointments.” Long pause here ... while I parse the careful phrase used. We want to know: Did all those 70,000 veterans get an appointment or just contact? Are the appointments soon? Were some referred out to nonVA medical care? Here are some new steps the VA is taking: • Visit sites once a month to review scheduling practices. • Establish a new patient measurement program to gauge by location the satisfaction of veterans, including ones trying to get health care for the first time. • Hold senior leaders accountable. • Order a hiring freeze at VA health’s central (VHA) and regional (VISN) offices. • Do away with the 14-day scheduling goal as part of employees’ performance plans. • Post data twice a month to update the health-care access info. As I scrolled down the list, I keep looking for the big step that would help prevent these scheduling shenanigans from happening again. And finally, at the bottom, there it was: Suspending Performance Awards -- VA has suspended all VHA senior executive performance awards for FY2014. Bingo. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. Financial Review at Mid-Year How is your financial year going? Are you on target with your goals? Halfway through the year is a good time to assess where you are, and where you’re going. Here are some suggestions: • Have you started putting money away for the holidays? No, it’s not too early to start. Saving money each month now can keep you from running up expenses in December and paying into next spring if you need to use credit cards. • How is your rate of saving? Have you been able to keep up with your goal? Renew efforts to put money into savings and consider whether you can increase that amount, no matter how small. • Where is your savings? Ideally, it’s in a place that’s not easy to access, such as your checking account or an online account. Review interest rates online and compare to what you’re getting. Look at rates for regular savings versus money-market accounts and certificates of deposit. Interest will vary by the amount deposited and the length of time. (Beware not to lock up your emergency stash in a long-term CD. You’ll pay early-withdrawal penalties to take out your money. Opt for a short-term CD with an automatic rollover.) • Are you close to paying off one or more credit cards? Whether you choose to pay off the smallest balance first or the one with the

highest interest rate, getting a card paid off completely will free up more funds to pay on other credit cards. • If you made a vow to make use of grocery coupons, have you kept it up? At the bottom of each receipt you’ll find the amount you’ve saved by using coupons. Consider that extra money to pay off credit cards or put into savings. • Have you made use of a computer software budgeting program? After inputting all your data, you can sort your types of expenses with the click of a few buttons. • Check your 2013 tax return. Did you pay or did you get a refund? If you paid or got back thousands of dollars, you could need an adjustment to your deductions and exemptions. Some of the situations that might require a change are a birth or a child who moves out, working multiple jobs or a working spouse. The Internal Revenue Service has an online withholding calculator to help you come up with the right numbers. If there are changes, turn in a new W-4 form to your employer. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply3@ gmail.com. DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently heard on the news that eating nuts reduces the risk of pancreatic cancer. Is this true? -- Anon.

Cut the Nerve, End the Pain? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 85 and in fairly good health, but I am in my ninth year of extremely painful postherpetic neuralgia. Instead of diminishing, the pain is increasing. It could be that the gabapentin (600 mg, three times daily) is wearing off. I tried Lyrica, but stopped when it hurt my eyes. The pain can be excruciating, even from the touch of a shirt. A relative suggested cutting the affected nerve. What would you recommend? -- F.S. ANSWER: Post-herpetic neuralgia is a syndrome of pain due to inflammation of the nerves after an infection with herpes zoster. The older you are, the more likely you are to get this complication, and the longer the pain tends to last -- but nine years is much longer than normal. Treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia is often with several medications. Gabapentin (Neurontin) is one, but the effective dose is sometimes quite high, as high as 1,200 mg three times daily. Many people get very fatigued at that high a dose. A much older medication, nortriptylene, is more effective in some people and may be worth a try. Capsaicin cream provides relief for many people, although it can cause some burning when first applied. I recommend starting with the regular, not high-potency, strength. Unfortunately, surgery -- at any level, from the end of the nerve to the brain -- has not been consistently effective and carries the risk of permanent nerve damage. A neurologist can advise you on other treatments, including injection of steroids around the spinal cord in extreme cases. Fortunately, this complication can be largely prevented with the use of the shingles vaccine, which most people over 60 should get, even if they have had shingles before.

ANSWER: The data is now pretty solid that all kinds of nuts not only reduce heart disease risk, but also cancer risk, including pancreatic cancer. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed a reduction in all cancers. I wouldn’t eat nuts just to reduce pancreatic cancer risk, but it’s a good way to improve overall health. Nuts have healthy fats, proteins and micronutrients that may be responsible for the lowered risk of disease. Nuts also make you feel full and less likely to eat snacks that are less healthy. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have worn a sterling silver chain and cross for years. Over time, I have noticed that it’s gone from shiny to dark. I have never polished it. Right now it is almost black. Is it something in my body chemistry that does this? -- V.S. ANSWER: The black discoloration is tarnish, an oxidation of the metal. Even sterling silver can tarnish, and some people’s body chemistry can indeed make tarnishing more likely. Some people will complain of the dark discoloration if the tarnish rubs off on the skin. More-acidic sweat, and more traces of sulfur, will cause more tarnish. This is very different from nickel allergy, which can cause mild but occasionally more severe skin reactions. Sterling silver does not contain nickel. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Q: Some kind of animal -- I’m not sure if it’s a deer or a rabbit or what -- is nibbling away the leaves on many of my plants in the yard and garden. What’s the best way to keep these critters out of my yard? -- A Reader, via email A: Wildlife often can be an annoying (and sometimes dangerous) presence in your yard, and it can be quite difficult to keep them out. Deer, for example, can hop fences, and rabbits, moles and other mammals can tunnel underneath or squeeze between damaged or misaligned boards. Squirrels routinely raid bird feeders, and in some places, bears just meander through, searching for their favorite snack buffet -- the trash barrel. Here are some tips: • To prevent bears and raccoons, keep household trash in tightly covered containers, ideally inside the garage or a shed. • Turn your compost frequently and cover with dirt to minimize odors, so that rodents don’t start tunneling in. • Deer sometimes can be dismayed by the smell of soap -- some homeowners recommend putting bars of soap into old pantyhose, and then tying the hose around tree branches near the areas you want deer to avoid. • Set up bird feeders at least 5 feet away from trees and walls so it’s harder for squirrels to reach them. ¥ Raised garden beds can discourage rabbits and make it harder for moles to tunnel directly to vegetable roots. Also, intersperse naturally repellent vegetables like onion, garlic and chives throughout the garden, or edge it with flowers like lavender or marigold. • Place firewood stacks or building materials several feet away from your house or shed, and make sure they’re stacked so that air and light can get through them. This will discourage rodents and insects from taking up residence. HOME TIP: Remove unnecessary debris, junk or excess lawn ornaments from around your yard. Squirrels and rabbits will have fewer perches and hiding places, so they’ll be much more reluctant to hang around. Send your questions or home tips to ask@ thisisahammer.com. Be Prepared Even if we don’t have caregivers now, it’s a good idea to look to the future. The Federal Citizen Information Center has a package of information that we -- and our caregivers -- need to have. The Family Caregivers Kit is free and was put together with an eye to gathering lots of information in one place. The kit comes with nine publications: the 2014 Consumer Action Handbook; how to spot health scams; money smarts for older adults; two pamphlets on medications; and four publications on handling someone else’s money. These four include power of attorney, court-appointed guardians, representative payees and Department of Veterans Affairs fiduciaries and trustees under a revocable living trust. All good stuff, with information we need now and when caregivers come into our lives. The 2014 Consumer Action Handbook is worth having all by itself. Its 152 pages contain solid information on insurance, banking, buying or leasing cars, privacy and identity theft, credit, travel, food, going green and much more. If you’re scammed or need to file a claim, there’s a section on that too, with contact information for companies as well as local, state and federal government agencies. While the Family Caregivers Kit is available online, it requires you to put your name and address on the Internet. Your best bet is to call the FCIC at 1-888-8783256 and ask for the kit to be sent to you. A representative will know all the parts and pieces that go into it. If you have a computer and want to read other free publications online, go to publications.usa.gov ... and have fun! You’re not limited to the categories listed. Put an interest you have (such as “seniors”) in the search box, and see what you get. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com. Acquire Confidence Part 1: How Confident are You?

How confident are you? It makes a difference, you know. The measure of your self-confidence is revealed in a variety of ways: your voice, the language you use, your body language, your grooming and much more. Self-confident people have a natural magnetism about them. They can be identified almost immediately when they enter a room. They walk with buoyancy, stand with dignity, speak with conviction, and love with passion. They know where they’ve been, where they’re going, and why. They believe they are able to solve problems, overcome obstacles, and achieve goals. Self-confident people inspire trust and gain the support and loyalty of their family, friends, bosses, clients and even strangers. You want to be that kind of person; so do I. But what is confidence? Is it swagger, hubris, or arrogance? Is the ability to prance around a room like a show horse on steroids?

Certainly not. Just the opposite. The simplest definition of confidence is “full trust”. True confidence is full-trust in oneself and one’s strength, abilities, intelligence, and good judgment. One writer calls confidence “undisturbed calm”. The word “confidence” comes from two Latin words, conducere from which we get the word “conduct” and fidere which means “to trust”, the same word from which we get the words fidelity and faithfulness. So to have confidence means to “conduct or behave in a trustworthy or faithful manor”. There are two extremes of confidence. One extreme is mistrust and self-doubt where you have no confidence in your ability to do anything; the other extreme is arrogant selfconceit where you think you are much better than you really are. True confidence stands squarely between the two extremes. A confident person has a

realistic view of his skills based on knowledge and experience. He is neither arrogant nor selfeffacing. He does not have to be belligerent to get his way nor must he be so timid that he is little more than a doormat. Balanced self-confidence is what you want and you can have it. Self-confidence can be learned. No matter how uncertain or insecure you feel right now you can build the kind of confidence you desire. Check back here each week for another injection of confidence building thoughts and ideas and you will learn how you can Acquire Confidence!
