THE OPERA by Janet Spencer
Noted Italian operatic singer Enrico Caruso was born on February 25, 1873. In honor of that event, come along with Tidbits as we attend the opera! ENRICO CARUSO ● Caruso was one of the first opera singers to have his voice professionally recorded. He made nearly 300 recordings between 1902 and 1920, which was just before he died. As a result, his recordings are available today on CD or digital download. His 1904 recording of “Vesti la giubba” (“put on the costumes”) from the opera Pagliacci was the first sound recording to sell a million copies. Because of the popularity of his recordings, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his day. ● He also made history when he was broadcast live from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House in 1910 in the first radio broadcast to be publicly transmitted in the United States. ● In 1906, Caruso performed in San Francisco the night before the big earthquake shook the town to its roots. He was so unnerved by the experience that he feared the shock would damage his voice. Standing in the shattered ruins of his hotel, he stood by a broken window, singing at the top of his lungs in order to be sure his voice was unharmed. He swore he’d never return to San Francisco, and he kept his word. Turn the page for more

CARMEN FACTS ● Carmen by George Bizet is one of the most frequently performed operas, and the “Toreador Song” is one of the most widely recognized operatic tunes. ● Enrico Caruso and Maria Jeritza starred in a production of Carmen in which real horses were used. One horse relieved himself, leaving a huge puddle. When the climactic death scene arrived, Caruso stabbed Maria, but she refused to fall down dead. “Die! Fall will you!” Caruso shouted, and she sang, “I’ll die if you can find me a clean place!” ● The most tacky version of Carmen was probably the silent movie version that was made in 1915. ● During one performance of Carmen a dog wandered on stage and became fascinated by the conductor’s waving baton. The dog enjoyed fetching sticks and couldn’t understand why the conductor wouldn’t throw the baton for him to retrieve. The dog began to bark and the barking became louder when the conductor used the baton to try to shoo the dog away. The curtain came down and the dog was removed. ● Many cats reside in the outdoor arena in Verona and in one performance of Carmen, a kitty came out from behind the wings and started rubbing up against Don Jose’s legs, purring and meowing just as he was preparing to murder Carmen. ● A performance of Carmen was being staged in Mexico City. The singer playing the part of Don José had a long wait back stage while Acts 3 and 4 progressed, so he decided to dash out to get a beer in a local tavern. No sooner had he entered one than he was arrested by a couple of cops who saw his scruffy clothing and dragged him off to jail. When he informed them he was a tenor singing opera, they informed him he was drunk. He could only convince them by singing his part in the opera.

Pets, Pot Don't Mix DEAR PAWS'S CORNER: I read a report this week that said more and more pets are being treated for "marijuana poisoning" from accidentally ingesting their owners' medically prescribed marijuana. Is this true? Why haven't we heard more about it? -Concerned in California DEAR CONCERNED: As the number of states that allow medical marijuana to be prescribed increases, it's likely you will hear more stories about pets being affected by ingesting this drug. A recent NBC News report estimated that calls to the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center reporting pet poisonings increased 30 percent between 2009 and 2013. However, Time magazine disputes that report, noting that the actual number of calls increased from 213 in 2009 to about 320 last year -- a very small percentage of the 18,000
total calls the APCC gets each year from owners. My take on the issue is this: Marijuana is a drug, so owners need to use common sense. You wouldn't leave other prescriptions lying around for the dog or cat to eat. So don't leave your stash lying around. Further, many patients use baked goods to ingest marijuana rather than smoking it. "Pot brownies," for example, contain chocolate, which is definitely dangerous to dogs and can cause severe symptoms when eaten. The APCC gets far more calls about poisoning from chocolate ingestion than from any other substance, Time noted. That said, pet owners who see or suspect their dog or cat has ingested marijuana should contact their veterinarian for advice. They also should watch their pet for unusual symptoms, such as lethargy, excessive drooling, diarrhea or incontinence, and take them to the vet immediately if they begin experiencing these or any other problems.

This winter has certainly led to Cabin Fever and a lot of missed school for our children so I thought maybe we would look at keeping them occupied and teaching them some important lessons in the kitchen at the same time. Most kids like to spend time in the kitchen, helping grown-ups bake cookies, cakes and the like. They may not be old enough to use the stove or oven, but they can certainly help measure, pour and stir ingredients and learn some valuable lessons in the process. If baking with the kids sounds like fun to you, give it a try. Here are some tips to ensure the experience goes smoothly. Know your kids’ limitations and assign them tasks accordingly. Have your four-year-old get out the mixing bowls and spoons and pour in the ingredients, while your 10-year-old reads the recipe and your 13-year-old does all the measuring. Make sure everyone interested in helping has a job they can do and do well. Stress safety in the kitchen. Show your kids the hazards and set an example. Be careful around the stove, use oven mitts for hot pans, and turn pot handles inward. Keep the sharp utensils out of the reach of young children. Be prepared for some mess. Clean up as you go and keep things in perspective. A little flour on the floor and a smear of icing on the refrigerator door isn’t the end of the world. You now have something fresh baked to enjoy, the kids had a fun, educational experience, and your home probably smells great! When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. He wrote the opera Hansel and Gretel. ● A age 2, William Gilbert was kidnapped from his home in Italy, and the ransom his parents paid was one pound of sterling silver for each pound of baby— 25 pounds in all. When Gilbert grew up and started working with Arthur Sullivan, he incorporated this incident into two of his operettas. ● In the opera Othello, Othello is the only black actor. But in New Orleans in 1955, the actor playing the part became ill, and the understudy did too. Nowhere in town was there another black man who knew the part. However, there was a white man who could sing and knew all the words. So the play was revised a bit, becoming the only all-black performance of Othello with a white star.

● If insects give you the creepy-crawlies, you might not want to read the following tidbit: Researchers have discovered a kind of caterpillar that emits a sound eerily like a human scream. This particular species is often a victim of predatory wasps. When the wasps approach, the caterpillar rubs two special organs together to produce the sound. The "scream" calls a troop of ants that protect the caterpillar, and in return the caterpillar secretes an amino acid that the ants need. ● The name of the state of Vermont comes from the French "mont vert," which means "green mountain." It was an April Fool’s Day joke. A TOAST TO AN OPERA SINGER ● Helen Porter Mitchell was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1861. She showed remarkable musical ability, with a voice spanning three octaves. As a young woman, she married and tried to settle down, but she knew she was not destined for the life of a housewife; she was destined for the stage. ● After receiving instruction as an opera singer, she knew this was the life for her. However, Australia did not have many opportunities for opera singers in the 1800s, so she left her family and traveled to Europe and England, where she was received enthusiastically, becoming the first Australian to achieve international recognition as an opera singer. ● She had always gone by the nickname of Nellie, and she was persuaded to adopt a new stage name as her last name. She chose a contraction of her hometown of Melbourne. ● During a newspaper interview, a reporter asked her how she stayed so slim. She said she enjoyed eating toast that was sliced very thin and toasted very crispy, a habit she had picked up when she’d been ill and could digest little else. The hotel chef at the Ritz served it to her whenever she visited, and other customers enjoyed it as well. Her fans, striving to emulate her, also started eating thin crispy toast, which was generally served with soups and salads or topped with spreads. Then I use a magnetic chip clip (with a strong magnet) to hold the open ends of the cloth. A BIG MEAL Opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink loved a big meal. One day as she sat down to a huge steak dinner in a restaurant, Enrico Caruso walked in. He took one look at the size of the steak she was starting on and said, “Surely you are not going to eat that alone!” She replied, “Oh, no— with potatoes!” Answer: Melba toast.
FAMOUS CANADIANS MEASHA BRUEGGERGOSMAN ● Measha Gosman was born in New Brunswick in 1977. As a youngster, she sang in the choir of the Baptist church. She had an aptitude for music and began taking voice and piano lessons at the age of seven. As a teen, she spent summers on a scholarship at the Boston Conservatory, and she also studied with noted soprano Wendy Nielsen. She got a bachelor degree in music at the University of Toronto and then earned her masters degree in Germany. ● When she married a Swiss man named Markus Bruegger, they combined their last names, and she became Measha Brueggergosman. ● Measha was only 20 years old when she played the lead role in the premiere of the opera Beatrice Chancy. The opera tells the story of a slave girl in 19th century rural Nova Scotia who murders her abusive father, who is also her master. The opera was well received, as was her performance. In 2000 it was filmed for the CBC.

She’s also performed internationally, in the U.S., Germany, and elsewhere. She sang on William Bolcom’s album Songs of Innocence and Experience which won three Grammy awards, including Best Classical Album. ● In 2012, Measha was a judge on the short-lived Canadian reality show Canada’s Got Talent. ● In 2007, she appeared on the British show Who Do You Think You Are in which genealogy experts trace the family tree of famous celebrities. The British granted freedom to all slaves who escaped from American rebels, which threw many plantations into chaos as slaves fled to freedom with the British. After the war, the British transported about 3,500 newly freed slaves to Nova Scotia where they were free to build new lives for themselves. Measha’s ancestors, John and Rose Gosman, and their baby daughter Fanny (who was born a free citizen because she was born behind British lines) traveled to Canada in 1783 on one of the last ships to leave New York for Nova Scotia. So Measha’s Canadian roots are deep and longstanding.

She felt pressure at the base of her neck and started experiencing numbness in her shoulders and extremities. When her legs gave out, she went to the emergency room, but was sent home the following day with blood pressure medication. Her doctor sent her to a different hospital, where an MRI showed the rupture in her aorta. She was in surgery four hours later. “I think the reason most people die of a dissected aorta is because it’s hard to detect and even more difficult to catch before you die of internal bleeding,” she says. ● After she recovered from surgery, she enjoyed one of the highlights of her career when she performed the Olympic Hymn at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Games. “I would have sang that from the coffin, are you kidding?” she quipped. When told that 2.5 billion people were watching, she admits, “I almost threw up!”

GREAT THEATRICAL GOOFS ● In the opera Gotterdammerung, two extras walk on stage, pick up the bier with Siefried lying on it, and carry it solemnly into the wings. One evening, one of the extras fell ill, so a stage manager called in a replacement. He felt a rehearsal was uncalled for with such a simple scene, so he just explained to the new bier-carrier what to do. When the scene came up, the two men entered the stage and each man picked up an end of the bier— only to find that they were facing each other. So they both put the bier down, turned around, and found themselves facing opposite ends of the stage. Only on the third try did they get it right. The audience applauded uproariously.

Q: My wife has a collection of 25 to 30 Byers Carolers, all in original boxes and in good condition. We have downsized and are looking to sell them. Do you know of anyone in the secondary market who deals in them? -- Ralph, Coventry, R.I. A: I made several calls, and it seems that no one I contacted is in the market to buy Byers Carolers. I next monitored eBay, where several dozen are posted for sale. This might be your best bet. In my opinion, the Byers Carolers that I've seen are of fairly recent vintage, most from the 1990s. In other words, I don't think these Christmas caroler figurines are quite old or rare enough to be in much demand with serious collectors. Q: I have a collection of more than 100 salt and pepper shakers. Although I don't have plans to liquidate, I am nevertheless interested in current values. -- Sue, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: There are several excellent price guides that should be helpful. One that I've found easy to navigate is "Antique Trader Salt & Pepper Shaker Price Guide" by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause. It features more than 1,000 S&Ps made by more than 40 makers, including American Bisque, Ceramic Arts Studio, Fenton, Goebel, Westmoreland and A.H. Heisey & Company. Although there are always exceptions, the S&P's I've spotted in shops and at antiques malls have been priced in the $3-$5 range. Q: My dad was a big Harry Truman fan, and I have several political items related to his political campaigns. One of the more unusual things is a "Harry Truman for President" license plate. Any value? -- Tom, Fenton, Mo. A: I found the license plate referenced in several price guides, and it appears to be worth about $750. Q: I have a Montblanc fountain pen, the 432 Stylographic. It is black and was manufactured sometime before World War II. -- Steve, Albuquerque, N.M. A: Your pen should be black with an inlay white star on the cap crown. From 1937, it is valued at about $300, according to "Collecting Pens" by Edward Kiersh and published by House of Collectibles.

At one performance in Paris, Rigoletto’s hump slowly slid down his back as he sang, until the audience was presented with a perfectly normal man with a really enormous butt. ● In Siegfried, the hero slowly forges a sword, then lifts it and brings it down upon the anvil, which splits apart. Too bad for singer Lauritz Melchior that the stage hand cued the anvil split three seconds before he struck it with his sword. ● Hans Hotter was singing in Die Walkure when he was to grab an enormous cloak, throw it around his shoulders, and stride boldly onto stage. He didn’t understand why the audience was laughing until he discovered he had failed to remove the fluffy pink coat hanger from the cloak before draping it over his shoulders. ● In Lohengrin, the star tenor is to step into a swan boat and be carried off. But at the Met in 1936, the swan boat disembarked before tenor Lauritz Melchior was able to get in. Melchior looked at the audience and sang in German, “When does the next swan leave?” (Continued next page) ● In the opera Tosca, the soprano playing the lead role of Tosca dramatically throws herself to her death off the battlements of the castle. Normally the singer lands unharmed on a mattress backstage, but in this production a trampoline was used instead. The result was that the rather heavy singer bounced into view of the audience several times before finally “dying.” ● It was the premiere of the new opera Charles VI in Paris in 1849. At the beginning of the aria called “Oh God, Kill Him!”, a member of the opera company fell dead. The next night at the same point in the production, a member of the audience died. When, at the third performance, the leader of the orchestra died, Napoleon III banned the opera.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General has nailed more thieves who've stolen money. In this case, it was from the program for government contracts for companies owned by servicedisabled veterans, as well as for health-care benefits. „ New Jersey -- A business owner was charged in a $1.2 million procurement fraud. The owner claimed that her company was a service-disabled veteranowned small business. The business was furniture, which she sold to industrial and government customers. She was never in the military; neither was her husband. Her father-in-law, however, was a retired veteran. The thief claimed that her father-in-law was the owner of the business. Even if he was, he wasn't service-disabled. She could go to jail for 20 years and face a quarter-million dollar fine if found guilty. „ New Mexico -- A construction-company owner pled guilty to defrauding the service-disabled-veterans program to the tune of $11 million for its work in National Cemeteries. His son-in-law pleaded guilty as well. There was a veteran in the mix, however: A stepbrother was a service-disabled veteran who lived in another state. He was paid a small weekly amount for them to use his name and disabled status. When necessary, his signature was forged on documents. „ Washington, D.C. -- A former Department of Defense employee was nabbed for $2.5 million in healthcare fraud for submitting false claims for health-care benefits overseas. The fraudulent claims were for prescriptions and medical items from a doctor where the employee was stationed. He managed to scam both the Foreign Service Benefit Plan as well as the VA's Foreign Medical Program. If found guilty, he will go to prison for a very long time, with long sentences for each of the false claims.
GREAT THEATRICAL GOOFS cont’d ● In one production of The Magic Flute, the scenery consisted of several triangular pillars. On each side of the pillars a different part of the scenery was painted. In order to change the scene from the forest to the temple, the stage hands standing inside the pillars only had to turn 120 degrees. During the second half of the opera, characters Papageno and Tamino were conversing in song when two of the stage hands lost their balance and crashed to the ground. Calls for help were heard issuing from inside the pillars. Papageno looked at Tamino, and Tamino looked at Papageno, and together they proceeded to the back of the stage where, with much adlibbing, they heaved the pillars upright. They then returned to the front of the stage to continue the opera, but not before receiving a tremendous round of applause. ● The Cairo Opera House was destroyed by fire in 1970. It was rather ironic considering that the Cairo fire station was located inside the same building.

Pork Medallions With Pears
Both healthful and hearty, these pork tenderloin medallions are finished with a sweet and tangy pear sauce. 1 cup quinoa, rinsed 1 pound pork tenderloin, cut into 1-inch-thick slices 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons fennel seeds 4 green onions, slice 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1.5 pounds ripe Anjou or Bartlett pears, peeled, cored, and sliced 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1. Prepare quinoa as label directs. Press pork with palm of hand to flatten. Sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. 2. In 12-inch skillet, heat oil on medium-high. Add pork; cook 5 to 6 minutes or until browned on both sides, turning over once. Transfer to plate. 3. Reduce heat to medium. To same skillet, add fennel seeds; cook 30 seconds, stirring. Add green onions, 1/3 cup water and garlic; cook 1 minute, stirring. Add pears, lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon salt; cook 2 minutes or until pears begin to soften, stirring occasionally. Return pork to pan, along with any juices. Cook 3 to 6 minutes or until pork is slightly pink in center (145 degrees F). 4. Serve pork with quinoa; top with pear mixture. Garnish with additional green onion, if desired. Serves 4. TIP: You can substitute quick-cooking brown rice for quinoa.

If you want something both quick and comforting for supper tonight, then you want this easy goulash! Less than 15 minutes from start to finish, and oh, what aroma and flavor. 16 ounces extra-lean ground sirloin beef or turkey breast 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped celery 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained 3 cups hot cooked noodles, rinsed and drained 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 6 tablespoons no-fat sour cream 2 teaspoons ground paprika 1. Wintertime Roof Leaks Q: This has been a winter of unusually stormy and snowy weather, and it looks like my house isn't holding up too well. After noticing a water stain on an upstairs ceiling I went into the attic and found water stains on several boxes and a general damp smell. Trouble is, there is still ice and snow coating the rooftop, and I don't feel safe going outside. How can I deal with this? -- George in Virginia A: Climbing onto the roof is definitely not safe in the midst of ice and snow, but you do need to stop water from entering, of course. You can set up a temporary patch from inside the attic, but keep in mind it is very temporary -- you'll need to check it frequently until warmer weather comes and the roof can be properly repaired.
In the attic, trace the water leak to its source. A leak can occur farther up a pitched roof and trickle down the rafters to drip elsewhere. If the water stains follow a path, trace that path upward to where the water marks end and check that area of the roof's underlayment for damage, holes or apparent water entry points. Sometimes as the sun melts the ice and snow on the roof, you will be lucky (or unlucky) enough to see water actually dripping through. Now that you've located the leak (or leaks), you need to control the direction of the drip, so it no longer runs down the rafters but instead into a bucket to catch the water. Do this by placing a large nail in the center of the leak and tapping it through the roof's sheathing until it reaches the shingle outside. "But Sam," you say, "I'm trying to fix the leak, not create one!" True, but the damage is already done. For now you need to contain it until a better repair can be made. Underneath the nail you just punched through the underside of the roof, place a bucket to catch drips. Now the water isn't running all over the attic. Next, put on a dust mask and cut away water-damaged insulation from around the hole. This clears the area you need to patch and helps prevent mold growth. Let the area dry for a day or two; hopefully much of the
ice and snow will melt from the rooftop during this time. At any rate, you need the underside of the roof to be fairly dry so that a patch will hold. Once the area surrounding the hole is dry to the touch, you can patch it. Remove the nail from the hole. Make sure the area is very dry. You also might want to warm the area slightly with a hair dryer if it's a cold day, so that the patch material adheres. Fill the hole with roofing cement or roof patch compound (available at home-improvement stores -- you'll need just a small amount) and smooth out to the sides. In some cases, with spring coming, this small plug is all you need. But some DIYers add a little insurance by cutting a thin sheet of plywood into a square that extends a couple inches beyond the hole on each side, and tacking that tightly against the hole using roofing cement (not nails). Mark the patched area with brightly colored chalk or some other easy-to-see material. When the weather warms, you or a roofing professional must inspect the roof to locate and repair the damage. as the patch will give you only a few months' reprieve. The roof may be damaged in other areas, or there could be undetected water problems as well.

If you're a senior with a computer, do you know the answers to these questions? What is a keystroke logger? Why should your operating system be set for automatic updates? If you don't know the answers, your computer could be at risk for a security breach. Here are the answers: A keystroke logger is a spy program that logs each keystroke you make and sends the information to someone else. Your operating system should be set up for automatic updates because those updates will contain security features you need. Your best bet: Take the computer to the store where you bought it (or to the Geek Squad at Best Buy) and have them do a little work on it. Your list of requests: 1. Scan for viruses; 2. Turn on your firewall; 3. Get the latest operating system updates and set it to automatic; 4. Install a good virus protection; 5. Set your system to be very secure as you wander the Internet. Here's why I suggest the Geek Squad: If you buy the annual plan and something goes wrong, you can call them on the phone for advice. If it's a complicated fix, you can give them verbal permission to get into your computer remotely. Your next step is to find a teacher who can show you all the safety and security problems with the Internet. In general, here are some activities to avoid online: Quizzes (even if they offer prizes), giving your real name and any information about where you live, social networking sites, dating sites, clicking on links in email and agreeing to sign up on sites like LinkedIn. How to Combat Dry Winter Skin DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have extremely dry skin. Is there anything I can take orally for it, rather than applying moisturizing lotions? -- J. ANSWER: I don't know any oral medicine for dry skin. I can give you some tips on how to lessen your skin's dryness. Dry skin becomes a problem for many people in the winter, when furnaces are pushing out hot, dry air. Those people, and possibly you, benefit by increasing the humidity of the house to between 40 percent and 60 percent with a humidifier. Use only mild soaps like Dove or Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Don't take long baths or showers, and keep the water temperature warm but not hot. After bathing, pat yourself with a towel, but leave the skin somewhat damp. That's the time to use a moisturizing product. Petroleum jelly is cheap and effective. If a moisturizer leaves your skin greasy, first rub a small amount between your hands and then apply it to the skin. It's not so much a matter of oil returning to your skin as it is water. Your skin needs hydration. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: When I was a little girl, my mother used to warn me about chilblains. I think it was her way of frightening me into dressing the way

ANSWER: "Chilblain" is a real word. It's a cold-weather injury that most often strikes the toes, and less often the fingers. It comes about from intense and prolonged spasms of blood vessels. Blood circulation is greatly decreased. This mostly happens when weather is cold but not freezing. Skin changes might not occur until 12 to 24 hours after exposure. They consist of purple patches on the toes. They itch or give rise to burning pain. Warmth gets rid of them. Women between the ages of 15 and 30 are the ones most susceptible to this kind of cold injury. Chilblain has another name, "pernio." I never hear either word mentioned. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 79 years old. I take Fosamax for osteoporosis. I also take one 500 mg calcium tablet daily. Is it necessary for me to take both? -- D.S. ANSWER: Yes, you have to take both. Fosamax works by slowing down the body cells that gnaw on bones. They're supposed to do that. It's the way the body has of constantly renewing bones. The bone destruction is followed by bone buildup. In older ages, bone destruction outpaces bone buildup. Osteoporosis is the result. Fosamax prevents this from happening. However, for the bone cells to build new bone, they need calcium. Without it, they can't get the job done. Older women should be getting 1,200 to 1,500 mg of calcium every day. You also need vitamin D, a vitamin that many of the elderly are deficient in. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption. You

Danger Ahead: Extreme Responses to Loneliness Everyone endures bouts of loneliness from time to time. They are usually short-lived because the causes are either social (broke up with their girl/boyfriend, got a divorce, had a fight with their best friend, etc.), or geographical (moved to another job, town, school, etc.). Mentally healthy people adapt quickly to new situations and are able to establish constructive relationships. Sometimes, however, loneliness can trigger either one of two extreme reactions: isolation or obsession. ISOLATION: Some lonely people will cut themselves off from the rest of the world. They lose all motivation to get involved with anything; even things that once fascinated them. They sit in corners, hide behind books, or sit alone in the lunchroom with their back to the crowd. You can almost hear them singing, “Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, guess I’ll go eat worms.” If they do develop a relationship it doesn’t take them long to sabotage it so they can prove to themselves their own worthlessness. To ease the pain of their solitude they will often anesthetize themselves with food, alcohol, drugs, etc. OBSESSION: Others deal with loneliness by getting overly involved with an individual or an activity. More than one recently-divorced individual has become compulsively obsessed with a new person (lover), probably to numb the pain of their separation. They jump body and soul into a new relationship only to discover they have made some very serious mistakes (remember Fatal Attraction?). Others get over involved with some cause or activity that keeps them so busy they forget about their loneliness until night comes and they are alone. You might be interested to know that the same was not found to be true in women. Depression often accompanies loneliness. Some of the symptoms of depression (withdrawal, anxiety, lack of motivation, sadness, etc.) are similar to the symptoms of loneliness. People being treated for depression need to give consideration to the possibility that loneliness may be contributing to their condition. Other consequences of loneliness are sleep disorders, chemical abuse, antisocial behavior, and self-destructive behavior. Extreme irrational responses to loneliness can threaten health, inhibit the ability to respond appropriately in social situations, and interfere with the ability to make good decisions.
