When studying maps, whether with an atlas, a fold out map or internet mapping site like Google Maps, some names just kind of jump out at you. Many strange and funny names dot maps around the globe! Tidbits will direct you to a few. • Toponymy is “the study of place names.” Many places were named for historical events, persons or naturally occurring landmarks. Some have strange names that seem to have come from joking comedians or drunken sailors! • To start off with a laugh, a funny dot on maps of Quebec is Baie des Ha! Ha! This is a hamlet near the Ha! Ha! River, which has five dams, all named Ha! Ha! (numbered 1-5). There is also a Pointe des Ha! Ha!, Bridge Lake Ha! Ha!, Park Ha! Ha!, and more! The areas are all interesting and beautiful spots in Quebec. Remember that Canada has both English and French as their national languages. The French meaning of “haha” is “an unexpected obstacle on the path.” Sort of explains where the names must come from. • Another interesting place in eastern Canada is Blow Me Down Provincial Park near Deer Lake, Newfoundland. The wind does blow across and over the Blow Me Down Mountains but the park actually has lots of trees to shield visitors from the wind. turn the page for more!

• When the town of Deer Lake was named in the late 1800s, it was named for the many “deer” who often crossed the local lake. Those deer were actually caribou. • A whistle on the roof of the Deer Lake Power Plant was placed there during construction in the early 1920s. An air raid siren that was brought to Newfoundland from England, it is still used today. Local residents listen for the whistle to know whether they are on time for work, ready for lunch, or ready to end their work day. It is sounded Monday to Saturday but silent on Sunday. The whistle also is blown in honor of several Canadian holidays. • If you do happen to visit Blow Me Down Park and Deer Lake in Newfoundland you should also head southwest and see Jerry’s Nose. Why? Because a place with a name like that should be interesting! • Heading way south, actually to the southern hemisphere, there is a lone rock hill in Queensland, Australia that is named Bang Bang Jump Up! This may make you wonder if a hunter found a large kangaroo years ago! •
Hat Head National Park in New South Wales Australia boasts sand dunes, wetlands, the clear waters of the Tasman Sea and beautiful beaches. As opposed to “bed head,” which means bad hair, this is a place where a hat is needed for protection from the sunshine. It is about seven hours south of the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia.
• There are many odd place names in all countries, including the United States. The state claiming New York City, one of the most fashion forward, sophisticated cities in the world, is also where Hoosick and Owl’s Head are located. However, there is also an Owl’s Head, Maine. Additionally, Maine has Bald Head and Suckerville on the map.

Helping a Dog Gain Weight
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, an elderly relative was moved to a full-time care facility because she was unable to care for herself or her two dogs. We gladly took in “Sadie” and “Tasha,” both small, mixed-breed adult dogs. I think they’re very underweight, though -their skin just hangs off of them. What is the best way to help them gain weight quickly? -- Jerry S., via e-mail DEAR JERRY: First, take them to the veterinarian for a complete checkup. While they may very well be underweight, make sure this is the case, as some dog breeds have somewhat loose skin. The vet also can determine their approximate age, check for any underlying medical conditions and test for specific nutritional deficiencies. From there, work with the vet to put together the best diet for the dogs. It likely will include a mix of dry and wet
dog foods, in specific amounts, for a certain number of feedings each day. I would not be surprised if they need to be given a nutritional supplement. The vet may be able to sell these to you, or recommend where to buy them. And, if needed, they may be given medication. It’s very important that they take any prescribed medicines as directed. If Sadie and Tasha do not have up-to-date vaccination records, the vet will give them the vaccinations they need. While healthy dogs generally need to return to the vet just once per year, Sadie and Tasha likely will need to be seen more frequently so the vet can monitor their weight gain and health, and adjust their diet if needed. I commend you for becoming Sadie and Tasha’s new family -- it sounds like they will be well cared for. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Welcome to Goose Tips!
This winter has certainly led to Cabin Fever and a lot of missed school for our children so I thought maybe we would look at keeping them occupied and teaching them some important lessons in the kitchen at the same time. Most kids like to spend time in the kitchen, helping grown-ups bake cookies, cakes and the like. They may not be old enough to use the stove or oven, but they can certainly help measure, pour and stir ingredients and learn some valuable lessons in the process. If baking with the kids sounds like fun to you, give it a try. Here are some tips to ensure the experience goes smoothly. Know your kids’ limitations and assign them tasks accordingly. Have your four-year-old get out the mixing bowls and spoons and pour in the ingredients, while your 10-year-old reads the recipe and your 13-year-old does all the measuring. Make sure everyone interested in helping has a job they can do and do well. Stress safety in the kitchen. Show your kids the hazards and set an example. Be careful around the stove, use oven mitts for hot pans, and turn pot handles inward. Keep the sharp utensils out of the reach of young children. Be prepared for some mess. Clean up as you go and keep things in perspective. A little flour on the floor and a smear of icing on the refrigerator door isn’t the end of the world. You now have something fresh baked to enjoy, the kids had a fun, educational experience, and your home probably smells great! When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different Wild Game! The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition but our food doesn’t!

ODD DOTS ON THE MAP (continued): Speaking of suckers, if you’ve driven across the U.S. on Interstate 40 you’ve probably noticed signs for Toad Suck Park, near Conway, Arkansas. Years ago, Toad Suck was a steamboat stop on the Arkansas River. The legend is that riverboat crews would visit a local tavern and “suck whiskey until they swelled up like toads!” The name is still used today for a U.S. Corps of Engineers Lock and Dam, a bridge, and the popular “Toad Suck Daze” festival held in Conway each May. By the way, most Americans say the name of the Arkansas River using the same pronunciation used for the state: Ar-can-saw. People in the state of Kansas call it the Ar-Kansas, with emphasis on their state name! Kansas has a small unincorporated town named Canada. David Christie, Speaker of the Canadian Senate from 1874-1878, sent his sons to purchase land in Kansas and other Canadians followed. Some places have names that have no known reason for their origin. Maybe the answer to those origin questions should be submitted to Why, Arizona! Why is a community about thirty miles north of the Mexican border near Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The town name originated from the Y intersection of State Routes 85 and 86. Arizona law required all city names to have at least three letters – or it would have simply been “Y.” By the way, the intersection has since been changed to a T intersection. If you are looking for Grit, Noodle or Cut and Shoot, you need to go to the state of Texas. Grit was so-named after the texture of the soil. Noodle was named after Noodle Creek, which according to old folk tradition meant “nothing,” meaning the creek bed was dry.

• On March 6, 1475, Michelangelo Buonarroti, the greatest of the Italian Renaissance artists, is born in the village of Caprese. His most important early work was the Pieta (1498), which showed the body of Christ in the lap of the Virgin Mary. He extracted the two perfectly balanced figures of the Pieta from a single block of marble. • On March 8, 1862, the Confederate ironclad Virginia wreaks havoc on a Yankee squadron off Hampton Roads, Va., when it attacked the U.S.S. Cumberland. Other Union ships fired back, but the shots were, in the words of one observer, “having no more effect than peas from a pop-gun.” • On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making “The Star-Spangled Banner” the official national anthem of the United States. In 1814, Francis Scott Key composed the lyrics after witnessing the massive overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812. • On March 4, 1944, Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, the head of Murder, Inc., is executed at Sing Sing Prison in New York. Lepke was the leader of the country’s largest crime syndicate throughout the 1930s. His downfall came when several members of his notorious killing squad became witnesses for the government. • On March 9, 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. Barbie’s appearance was modeled on a doll named Lilli, based on a German comic-strip character, and originally was marketed as a racy gag gift to adult men. • On March 5, 1977, the Dial-a-President radio program, featuring President Jimmy Carter and CBS news anchorman Walter Cronkite, airs for the first time. Approximately 9 million calls flooded the radio studio during the two-hour broadcast. • On March 7, 1987, Mike Tyson defeats James “Bonecrusher” Smith to unify the WBA and WBC heavyweight titles. At age 20, Tyson became the youngest undisputed heavyweight champion in boxing history. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

• It was Democratic governor and presidential hopeful Adlai Stevenson who made the following sage observation: “A free society is a place where it’s safe to be unpopular.” • Those who study such things claim that 75 percent of people who deliberately choose to buy a kosher product are not, in fact, Jewish. • Smart idea: Some fitness centers are now using the energy that clients expend on its exercise bikes to power the building’s lighting. • You might not have heard of American inventor Walter Hunt, but he came up with the ideas for an ice plough, a streetcar bell, an early version of the repeating rifle, artificial stone, the lockstitch sewing machine and a nail-making machine, among other things. One of his smallest and most useful inventions was the safety pin. In the mid-1800s, Hunt owed a friend $15. In order to come up with the cash to settle the debt, he decided to invent something. He picked up an 8-inch piece of brass wire he had on hand and made a coil in the middle of it, creating the spring action to open it. He then devised a clasp at one end to shield the user from the sharp point. After the device was patented in 1849, Hunt sold the patent to W.R. Grace and Company for $400, leaving himself with $385 after he paid the initial $15 debt. Incidentally, W.R. Grace and Company made millions of dollars from sales of the safety pin. • Are you afraid of rattlesnakes? Keep in mind that the venom of a black widow spider is 15 times more deadly than that of the rattler. • Domestic diva Martha Stewart has been struck by lightning three times. For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 ODD DOTS ON THE MAP (continued): • Cut and Shoot was named when a religious dispute concerning a visiting preacher arose in the Texas town. Some wanted to hear him and some didn’t! An eight-year-old said, “I’m scared! I’m going to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute!” He did cut but didn’t shoot and his words lived on in the town name! • While all places have histories, the small towns of Remote and Boring in Oregon must not have been as lively as Cut and Shoot. No Name, Colorado also missed out on a lively name. • Hot Coffee, Mississippi got its name from an innkeeper who attached a sign shaped like a coffee pot to his building to attract business in the 1800s. The inn’s business grew and the area adopted the name. • Two Egg, Florida was originally named Allison after a family-owned sawmill. During the Great Depression locals began trading eggs for other needs at the general store. The practice saved the town, and the name Two Egg was adopted. Tiny little Two Egg is still on the map! • Many strange names dot the map of Kentucky. Monkey’s Eyebrow, Rabbit Hash, Big Bone Lick, and Possom Trot are some of the peculiar ones. However, you have to go to Missouri to get to Peculiar and if you are interested in bigger critters like moose, maybe a visit to Eek, Alaska would be fun! • For the longest place name in the world, head down under to beautiful New Zealand. gakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu is a hill where a chief of the native Maori tribe mourned the loss of his brother. It means “the hilltop where Tamatea with big knees, conqueror of mountains, eater of land, traveler over land and sea, played his koauau to his beloved.”

PIERRE TRUDEAU Pierre Trudeau was one of the most widely known prime ministers in Canada’s history. He served as his country’s top leader for sixteen years, from 1968 until 1984. • Trudeau was born October 18, 1919 in Montreal and grew up in the wealthy suburb of Outremont. His full name was Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau. He and his two siblings grew up speaking French and English; their mother was of French and Scottish heritage, their father was French Canadian. • After graduating from Collège Jean-deBrébeuf, an elite Jesuit preparatory school, Trudeau received a law degree from the University of Montreal. He also studied at Harvard, the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris, and the London School of Economics. He had a reputation as a flamboyant and charismatic intellectual. He was clever, witty and quite controversial at times. • The press and many Canadians loved having Trudeau as their leader but, as with any politician, he also had many who did not agree with his liberal ways. Trudeau wore sandals in Canada’s House of Commons, used obscenities occasionally when referring to his opponents and actually did a pirouette behind Queen Elizabeth II! • He was married from 1971 to 1984 to Margaret with whom he had three sons. He also had a daughter later with Deborah Coyne in 1991. Trudeau dated several celebrities, such as Barbra Streisand, Kim Cantrell and Margot Kidder, adding to his own high profile celebrity status. He had an eight-year relationship with British actress and musician, Liona Boyd. Trudeau’s love life both thrilled and embarrassed Canadians.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 PIERRE TRUDEAU (continued): • Trudeau’s influence and policies established him as a political giant in Canadian history. He was prime minister when Canada adopted the Official Languages Act, establishing English and French as the national languages, in 1969. • He also lead the country through the most serious terrorist acts ever on Canadian soil, the October Crisis in 1970. The quick and strong response to stop the Front De Libération Du Québec (FLQ) involving in two kidnappings and the murder of Québec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte, lead to the invocation of the War Measures Act. This controversial act gave the government broad powers, including stationing armed soldiers on Parliament Hill to maintain security and order. The act was only used during the two world wars and the October Crisis. A famous line from Trudeau used in a news conference concerning how far he would go to maintain order, was: “Well, just watch me! •
Probably the most memorable action with the most significant change for the country of Canada was when Trudeau lead the government leadership in total separation from the United Kingdom (UK). Patriation occurred in 1982, transferring legal powers from the UK to Canada. Canada became an autonomous country, adopting its own constitution, including a charter of rights.
• The popular Trudeau left many memories, political and otherwise, for Canadians and people all over the world. During his years in office, the term “Trudeaumania” was widely used referring to his style and influence. The sports cars he drove along with the trademark rose in his lapel will remain a part of history. He died on September 28, 2000, in Montreal, a few weeks before his 81st birthday.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com GREAT DOUGH! While many think of money when they see the word, “dough,” this information is about the use of dough in baking some of the world’s favorite breads. • The topic of bread dough is enormous so a few “little” facts about some popular breads will fill this Tidbits section quickly.
For QUALITY SERVICE at an AFFORDABE PRICE, LET MIKE DO IT RIGHT!!!
• Let’s start with the Pillsbury Dough Boy. An icon of advertising in America known around the world, “Poppin’ Fresh” is the doughboy’s official name. Created by the Leo Burnett advertising agency in 1965, the doughboy debuted in a crescent roll commercial. Within three years he had an 87% recognition factor.
740-245-0006 164 St Rt 325 S, Rio Grande, OH
• The doughboy’s first words were,”Hi! I’m Poppin’ Fresh, the Pillsbury Doughboy!” As he popped out of the canned rolls, he also said, “Nothin’ says lovin’ like bakin’ in the oven, and Pillsbury says it best.” Since the beginning, the doughboy has been dressed in a chef’s hat bearing the Pillsbury logo, a white neckerchief and his soft “doughy” body. He is known for his cute giggle when poked in the tummy! • BeaverTails Canada Inc. has a corner on the market in the northern country with its famous pastries called “BeaverTails.” The company claims that it is “the first to hand-stretch fried pieces of dough to the shape of beavers’ tails.” Created by Pam and Grant Hooker in Ottawa in 1978, the company is now owned by twin brothers Anthony and Pino DiIoias and Pino’s wife, Tina Serrao.

Q: I have a copy of “The Young People’s Church of the Air Hymn Book,” compiled and autographed by Percy B. Crawford. It was published in 1932. Could you tell what it is worth and where I might sell it? -- Jane, Lititz, Pa. A: Percy B. Crawford was a Canadian who immigrated to the United States during the early decades of the past century. He was an evangelist and fundamentalist preacher, and was one of the first to discover the power of early radio. In 1931, while a seminarian at Westminster Theological Seminary, he started a youthoriented radio program at a Philadelphia station. It may hit a sour note with you, but his songbook, even autographed, is worth at best only about $15 or $20. My suggestion is to show it to used book dealers in your area to see if there is any interest. Q: I have a Bible that was given to my mother when she and her family immigrated to America from Austria. It is dated 1914 and was from the New York Bible Society. Does it have any value? -- Margaret, Sioux Falls, S.D. A: Verily I say unto you, not really. Only Bibles crafted before about 1700 are of interest to most collectors. Your Bible has value, but only of the sentimental kind. Cherish it as a family heirloom and not for possible resale. Q. I worked as a volunteer in the Jimmy Carter presidential campaign of 1980. I have a Jimmy Carter T-shirt that I got at the time that is in almost new condition. Any value? -- Steve, Spring Branch, Texas A: According to “Warman’s Political Collectibles: Identification & Price Guide” by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen and published by Krause Books, your T-shirt is worth in the $15-$20 range. Q: My grandmother received a beaver coat for her birthday in 1930. What is the coat worth, if anything? -- Lindy, East Barre, Vt. A: There are several excellent vintage clothing stores in Vermont. One of the better ones is Morning Glorious Vintage Clothing in Brattleboro. Contact is MorningGloriousVintage.com, and 802-534-0127. You might contact this shop for a professional opinion about the value of your coat. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. (continued): • The pastries, made with whole wheat dough and a variety of sweet toppings, had a big television moment when President Obama stopped by the Byward Market in Ottawa in 2009. They also have been served at special events, such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January, 2012. • Just as BeaverTails are fried dough (or floatcooked), so are “beignets.” The official state doughnut of Louisiana, beignet is French for “fried dough.” Most popular at the Café du Mond, “the original French Market coffee stand since 1862,” in New Orleans, beignets were actually brought to Louisiana by Acadians from the Maritime Provinces of Canada: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. • Areas with large Polish communities serve their own version of fried doughnuts, paczki, usually with a sweet filling. Mardi Gras, which is March 4 this year, is Paczki Day in Poland and areas with Polish immigrants. • Napoleon Bonaparte was the originator of the name for pumpernickel bread. His demand for a loaf of dark rye bread was for his horse! He ordered “Pain pour Nicole,” which meant “Bread for Nicole,” the horse. This was in Prussia where the bakers were German and they heard it as “pumpernickel.” • Another bread with an odd name is the “hushpuppy.” Served in the southern U.S., usually with fried fish or other seafood, hushpuppies are small round or finger-shaped bites of fried cornmeal batter. Several legends about the name exist, either about Civil War soldiers, fishermen, or cooks who tossed the tasty treats to dogs to stop begging or barking followed by, “Hush, puppy!” The oldest story of their creation actually is attributed to a group of nuns from France who settled in New Orleans around 1727; the treats were known as “croquettes de maise,” or corncake. • The term “breaking bread” is not only a term used for mealtime, but for religious fellowship. It is also a universal term for “peace.” Now, go in peace and enjoy some dough!

Preserve Your Family History! New book shows you how! “Hey Ron, here’s a copy of your family genealogy,” a close friend and distant relative said to me as he handed me a copy of a professionally prepared 200+ page book of our family tree. I thanked him for the surprise gift and promised to cherish it. It took a while but eventually I located my family branches. Once found, I closed the book and never looked at it again. Then it hit me, a genealogy is a wonderful thing to have but it lacks personality. It has boxes, lines, names, and dates, but has no character, soul, or vitality. I thought, “I sure would like to hear the story of the two brothers who came here from England in the1700s to start my family in the New World.” I wondered, “Why did one move to Chicago and the other to Missouri?” None of those answers were available in that book – just names, dates and places. Alas, I could do nothing about those relatives for whom nothing is written nor anything remembered. But I could do something about those who were still living. So here’s what I did: I created a system to take what is called an oral history of my own mom and dad. I spent hours researching and developed a unique question and answer format, then I recorded each of their life’s story on both audio and video tape. My next step was to put that system in a book so others could do the same. The origial 1988 version of the book titled “Your Family Heritage, a Guide to Preserving Family History,” sold for $19.95 and helped thousands of people across the land. I also lectured on the subject for several years at the Colorado Historical Society. Now this updated, expanded, and newly formated version of the book is available on Amazon.com for only $3.99 Everyone can now have the tools to preserve their family history - including YOU! Think about your family tree. Wouldn’t it be exciting if you could experience the personalities, hear the voices and enjoy the life stories of the people on
your family tree? Just imagine what you would do if someone handed you a video recording of your grandmother telling how her family lost everything during the Dust Bowl and what they did to survive and later prosper. Today you can take a few easy-to-follow steps to preserve the memories, insights, opinions, wisdom, faces and voices of those of your family members still living. How to Record Your Family History is designed to help you do just that. With this book you will learn how to capture with audio or video recordings the colorful personality of each living member of your family. Also, this book will help you document photographs and family heirlooms so your descendants will know the answer to the questions so oft heard when sorting through old photographs, “Who is that?”, “When was this photo taken,” and “That’s Grandma, but I wonder where the picture was taken?” Don’t delay! It’s likely in many cases you postponed too long these steps and have lost the faces and voices you wish you could see and hear again. You still have time to capture the stories of your aging relatives. And as long as YOU can hear and speak, YOUR stories too can be preserved for generations to come. Hesitate no longer. For more information about How to Record Your Family History please visit our comprehensive website: RecordYourFamilyHistory.com. Peruse the table of contents, find more information about the book, and find a link to Amazon.com where you can purchase the book and download it to your PC, tablet, SmartPhone or Kindle for only $3.99. Now you can rim YOUR family tree with the oral record and pictorial images that make the written genealogy come to life. Ron Ross, Author Loveland, CO

The Four Chaplains Where were you on Feb. 3? Were you at a ceremony honoring and remembering The Four Chaplains? If so, you were likely in the minority. In 1988, Feb. 3 of each year was declared to be Four Chaplains Day, yet most people have never heard of The Four Chaplains. It’s not on calendars, kids aren’t taught about it in school and only a few communities have remembrance ceremonies and lower their flags to half-staff. Here’s the story: On Feb. 3, 1943, the troop ship Dorchester, cruising from Newfoundland to Greenland with 900 soldiers aboard, was torpedoed on the starboard side below the water line by a German submarine. Panic ensued in the dark and disabled sinking ship. The Chaplains quickly fanned out to try to bring calm to the chaos and fear. The Chaplains were Rev. George Fox (from Pennsylvania), Rabbi Alexander Goode (from New York), Father John P. Washington (from New Jersey) and Rev. Clark V. Poling (from Ohio). Stories of the survivors recount the Chaplains’ efforts to save others, tending to those injured and getting them above decks, helping soldiers into lifeboats, distributing life vests -- and even handing over their own life vests and gloves, knowing they weren’t going to leave the ship. Those who survived, floating in the icy waters, heard the chaplains’ prayers in multiple languages coming across the water. In 20 minutes, the Dorchester was gone. The Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross were awarded posthumously in December 1944. If you’re a member of a veterans service group or a civilian group that wishes to honor veterans, you have until February 2015 to organize a ceremony of remembrance in your community. For a fast education about The Four Chaplains, go online to wikipedia.org, or look for the 2004 documentary called “The Four Chaplains: Sacrifice at Sea.” Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Small-Amount Scam Can Cost You Plenty When you check your credit-card statements every month for thefts, your eyes likely scan down the column of figures for large amounts that indicate scammers have used your card for major purchases. If you see a relatively small amount, only a few dollars, you might not investigate it even if you don’t remember making the purchase. The Better Business Bureau has put out a notice that some of the credit cards that were stolen over the holidays have had a specific amount charged -- $9.84 -- on millions of cards, calling it a new scam. But it’s not new. This small-amount scam has been going on for years. In the beginning, scammers would order a small item from an online drugstore then cancel the shipment once the card was verified as being good. Why would scammers charge small amounts? From the scammers’ point of view, it’s still lucrative. If you charge 2 million credit cards and only put $2.50 on each one for your fake company, you still net $5 million. And using the smaller amounts makes it less likely that the thefts will be noticed, and the scam can continue for longer. Mostly, however, these small amounts are tests to check whether the credit-card number is still good. It takes time to call the bank or credit-card company, but do it anyway. It could mean you’ve been targeted for larger thefts. Here is some advice from the Better Business Bureau: • Ask for a new card if you see charges you don’t recognize. • If you lose your card and report it immediately, you won’t even have to pay the $50 if your card is used. • Don’t leave your cards or statements lying around. • Beware when ordering over the phone or online. Know who’s on the other end before you give your card number. Here are some other tips: • If you collect your mail and have it in the car with you, put the mail upside down on the seat if you leave the vehicle. • Look carefully at your landline phone bill each month. If you’re charged for three-way calls you didn’t make, complain and have the charges taken off. Those charges can appear every month, and the phone companies call it a glitch. • Also check your bank statement for odd amounts that you don’t understand. Have them removed if the amounts are there by accident. For example, the computer might think you are paying for certain services and debit your account every month. Make 2014 your year to be vigilant. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Flushing Out Rodents Q: My mother-in-law was visiting over the holidays and kept saying she could smell a mouse. I looked all over but couldn’t see or smell anything. Was she just being paranoid? -- Jim in Worcester, Mass. A: Believe it or not, it is possible to smell that a mouse is present in your home. Field mice, for example, build nests in the walls near an entry point. The nests give off a unique musty smell, caused in part by bits of fur padding the nest and urine (mice dribble urine constantly). Mice also are small and sneaky, usually coming out only at night when the family is asleep and the sound level in the
house is low. They travel under cover as much as possible, either along the inside of the walls or the back of cabinets and behind countertop items. How do they get into the house in the first place? According to Terminix, mice can squeeze through a crack that a pencil will fit through (sightly larger than 1/4 inch in diameter). Rats can get through a quarter-sized opening. So small openings in the foundation of a house are common entry points. Openings around pipes or cables are prime spots as well. Mice also might climb in through the attic, exploiting openings around soffit vents or damaged sections of the roof or eaves. To find out if you have a rodent infestation, head for the kitchen and food-storage areas (like the basement and pantry). Pick a lower-level shelf and remove all the items, then inspect the back of the shelf, with a flashlight if need be. Look for telltale mouse droppings (they look like black rice grains). You also might see an unusual amount of spilled grains (rice, oatmeal, etc.) or crumbs, and you might detect a faint musty odor. Inspect the food containers you just took out. Cardboard boxes with gnawed corners indicate mice have attempted
to get into them (they often will be chewed through, with their contents spilling out). Plastic bags also will be compromised, and mice can even gnaw through the plastic tops of metal coffee cans. Next, check the attic and crawlspace areas. Use a flashlight to look for droppings along the support beams, and inspect insulation for damage caused by burrowing rodents. If you don’t find evidence of mice or other rodents in the house, don’t assume there is no infestation, particularly if you notice a musty smell. Schedule an inspection by a pestcontrol service to confirm whether or not you have an infestation. HOME TIP: Leaf piles, unturned mulch, junk piles and stacked firewood are tempting shelters for all kinds of rodents. Locate them several feet from your house, garage or shed, and remove junk piles as soon as possible. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer. com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Fully Stocked & Ready For Spring! Mid-Winter Workout Still Going Strong I’m actually working out on a daily basis this winter. Unlike prior winters, where I could always find an excuse to avoid going to the gym -- it’s cold, it’s snowing, it takes too long to get there and back -- I’ve finally figured out how to get around my own faulty reasoning. A few months ago I wrote about purchasing a small manual treadmill, hoping that this would finally do the trick for me. I’ve put the treadmill in the living room (it leans up next to the wall when not in use), along with a selection of hand weights on the end table next to the lamp. And it works. While it’s not a full gym workout, it’s still a bit of exercise. I can watch the television while I walk, and have even used the seniors walking workout CD while on the treadmill because the music is good. The small hand weights have been useful, but I’m ready to upgrade to slightly heavier ones. Hint: Start with light weights, or you might get discouraged and not use them at all. The wrist and ankle weights have been used only a few times, as they can cause joint pain if put on the wrong place. For the wrist weights, it lessens the stress on joints if used farther up the arm, say halfway to the elbow. And ankle weights need a lot of padding underneath, but still won’t stay in place if walking. They do work for seated leg raises, however. So, there’s my mid-winter workout report. How are you doing with your workout resolutions? They say that if you can keep something going for 21 days, it can become routine.
Tuscan Potato Soup
Italy has many more dishes to offer than just spaghetti and pizza. This delectable soup is a prime example! 8 ounces extra-lean ground sirloin or turkey breast 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon ground sage 2 cups diced unpeeled raw potatoes 1/4 cup chopped onion 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 (14.5-ounce) can reduced-fat chicken broth 1 (14.5-ounce) can stewed tomatoes, undrained 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 cup water 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1. In a large saucepan sprayed with olive-oil-flavored cooking spray, brown meat. Stir in Italian seasoning and sage. Add potatoes and onion. Mix well to combine. Continue cooking for 6 to 8 minutes or until onions are tender. 2. In a covered jar, combine flour and chicken broth. Shake well to blend. Pour broth mixture into meat mixture. Add undrained stewed tomatoes. Mix well to combine. Lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 3. In a small bowl, combine dry milk powder, water and Worcestershire sauce. Stir milk mixture into meat mixture. Continue simmering for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Makes 4 (1 1/2 cups each) servings.

Heartbeat: How Fast Is Too Fast
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For some reason, I have gotten into the habit of checking my pulse when I walk or when I sit. While I watch TV, my pulse is about 100. Isn’t that way too fast? -- C.K. ANSWER: Pulse and heartbeat are one and the same. When the heart ejects blood, a pressure pulse is created in the all the body’s arteries. You can feel the pulse beat in the neck, the ankle or the thumb side of the wrist. A normal pulse rate (heartbeat) is 60 to 100 times a minute. Your 100 is normal, but at the high end of normal. Since you have no symptoms, you don’t have to rush to see a doctor. But at your next exam, mention your high pulse rate. The doctor can judge if conditions that lead to a fast heartbeat need to be investigated. An overactive thyroid gland and anemia are two such conditions. The booklet on heartbeat irregularities explains the heart’s many rhythm problems. Atrial fibrillation is the chief one. You do not have it. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I do hope you will be able to reply to my question. It is something that quite upsets me. My granddaughter had a tattoo put on her arm from shoulder to elbow. Why she ever did this is beyond me. She is to be married next September. She is trying to cover the tattoo with makeup so it won’t be seen.
ANSWER: People mulling over the wisdom of a tattoo should consider it like they would a diamond -something that lasts forever. It could make them pause. Yes, tattoos can be removed with lasers. Treatment is expensive, time-consuming and sometimes cannot get rid of all traces of the tattoo. It depends on the pigment used, but lasers do a pretty good job. Work is under way for the development of pigments that are more readily erased. Plastic surgeons, dermatologists and other doctors are adept at removing tattoos. Older treatments, still used from time to time, include cutting out the skin (done with small tattoos) or abrading the tattoo, similar to abrading acne scars.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What can I do to get rid of a carbuncle? I have had it for four months. -- M.G. ANSWER: Carbuncles are huge boils that penetrate more deeply than do boils. They have to be opened and drained of the pus within them. Antibiotics generally are prescribed, too. Often, the antibiotic chosen has to be one that’s effective against MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staph aureus, pronounced “mersa”). MRSA is one of the new supergerms that are touched only by a few, rarely prescribed antibiotics. Carbuncles are found most often on the neck, back, thighs and buttocks. You must have a doctor treat them. You’re not going to meet with success on your own. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Loneliness: The Constant Heartache Who is Responsible for Your Loneliness?
“What do you do that causes her to treat you that way?” was a question my counseling professor, Fr. Dr. Robert McEniry (Creighton University), taught his students to ask in a marriage counseling situation. The question presupposes that the responsibility for what happens between married partners is on each of them, not just one of them. A lonely person should ask a similar question: What do I do that causes people to treat me the way they do? All emotional healing begins with self-inventory and an acceptance of personal responsibility for who you are, how you act, and what happens to you. First, look within. Listen to what you tell yourself about yourself. If you constantly agonize over your worthlessness and your inability to make friends, you are your own worst enemy. You defeat yourself before you begin. Your very thoughts deter personal growth and the development of social skills. Your next step out of loneliness is to develop the habit of positive self talk. It will not be easy because it has taken you years of practice to be perpetually down on yourself. Listen carefully for words such as “I can’t” or “It’s too difficult,” or “I tried that once and it didn’t work.” Your actions are a result of your thoughts so if you keep telling yourself you cannot do this or will not go there, you can’t and you won’t. Change your conversation about yourself and you will discover a happier, friendlier self than you have ever known. Now take it a step farther. Examine every aspect of your life. Take an objective look at how you dress, move, talk, groom yourself, etc. Do you look lonely? Do you walk lonely? Do you talk lonely? If you do, guess what? You are going to be lonely because you
broadcast to everyone nearby, “Stay away from me! I don’t want or need your friendship.” People who walk around with a “poor me” attitude never attract friends. People want to be around others who smile, laugh and bring joy to every conversation. Now the really BIG step: Change something. Fix something. Transform yourself from being boring to charming; from uninformed to well informed; from nobody to somebody; and most important, stop being a victim. Walk like you are important, offer your opinion and speak it with confidence. Take full responsibility for your own life and situation. Stop being the victim and begin to think of and present yourself as a victor. Try it for a week and see what happens. Try it for 90 days and you will change your life forever. Will it be easy? Of course not, and your biggest hurdle will not be the other people in your office, the friends who have abandoned you, or the grumpy neighbor next door. The biggest barrier to solving your loneliness problem will be YOU! “I know I need to change” repeated as a lament will leave you lonely and discouraged. It is not just enough to know, you must act and take the first steps required to move from where you are, to where you need to be. That is the challenge I give to you today. I know change is scary, even positive change. But I also know this: You can change your life for the better when you no longer blame others and as you take responsibility for who you are and how you think and act. Please send me your comments on this article and let us talk about solutions for loneliness!
