HAIR FACTS

9

• Hair is mostly made up of a protein called keratin, the same substance that forms the outer layer of skin and the fingernails. In animals, horns, hooves, claws, feathers, beaks, porcupine quills, and whale baleen are all also made of keratin. • Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body, and bone marrow comes in second. • Hair grows faster during warm weather than cold, faster during sleep, and fastest between the ages of 16 to 24. • How many hair follicles are there on an average adult? 5 million. 100,000 are on the scalp. There are some 580 hairs per square inch on a man’s face. You shed scalp hairs at the rate of 70-100 per day. • Hair never grows on the lips, palms, and soles. These are the only areas on the body with no hair follicles. • Combing is less detrimental than brushing. • It’s impossible to repair a split end, aside from cutting the hair. (cont’d next page)

FAST FACTS ABOUT HAIR Hairs live two to six years before falling out, to be replaced by a new hair. Because of this, it’s rare for hair to reach lengths exceeding several feet. Hair will be replaced at least 12 times during a normal life span. A strand of hair is stronger than a copper wire of equivalent diameter. A typical strand of hair can withstand a weight of about six pounds (2.7 kg) before breaking. An entire head of hair can hold about two tons. Whereas people of African decent have the lowest hair growth rate, and Asian hair grows the fastest, it’s also true that African people have the densest hair of all. In terms of texture, blond hair is the finest, while black hair is the coarsest. Black hair is the most common hair color worldwide. About 13 percent of the Scottish population has red hair, the largest percentage in the world. Worldwide, about 1 percent of the population has red hair, the rarest hair color. Hair is composed of carbon (50%), oxygen (21%), nitrogen (17%), hydrogen (6%), and sulfur (5%). Darker hair tends to have more carbon present than lighter hair. It’s not true that the “baldness gene” comes from the mother’s side of the family. The responsible genes can come from either side of the family, but it’s definitely true that the more family members with hair loss problems, the higher your chance of developing such issues yourself. Over 50% of men have male pattern hair loss by age 50. A horse, a mouse, and a human all have approximately the same number of hair follicles. Humans and chimpanzees have the same number of follicles as well, but chimpanzees have thick hair while human body hair is short. (cont’d next page)

DEAR ABBY: Brushing your dog’s teeth is important to keep them healthy throughout their life. But it can be a little different from the way you brush your teeth, and dogs don’t always like having it done. Here are some tips on brushing: * Try to brush your dog’s teeth at least once a week, more if possible (especially for smaller dogs and breeds like Pugs). * Use a brush and toothpaste made especially for dogs. Minty-fresh human toothpaste is pretty nasty to dogs, and could upset their stomach. A popular type of brush fits over your finger so that you can access the dog’s teeth more easily. * Start slowly: Get your dog used to having you touch its muzzle and mouth, and lifting up its lip. Give it a flavored treat like the toothpaste

BARBED WIRE • BOARD • HI TENSILE • WOVEN WIRE Monday - Saturday 8 to 5 • Closed Sunday 3371 Zoar Church Road, Jackson, OH 45640

you’ll be using: peanut butter or beef broth, for example. Or, give it a dab of the toothpaste as a treat. * Start with one section at a time. Put a dab of paste on the brush, gently lift your dog’s lip, and brush downward from the gumline. * If your dog struggles, pause and hold its muzzle lightly until it calms down. Then try again. If it really raises a fuss, stop and try again tomorrow. * Don’t reprimand it for misbehaving. This is really weird stuff for a dog. Use a soothing voice and give it lots of praise during and afterward. Welcome to Goose Tips! With Mother’s Day just around the corner I’d like to share an easy project the kids can make that Mom will cherish for years. Pick up a blank canvas and Sind craft paint at your local department store. We’re going to paint the word LOVE using your child’s hand and footprints. Find the center of your canvas and determine where you want the O. Paint your child’s hand and press in the canvas where you want the O. Now paint both feet and starting at the heel, use one foot at a time to form a V. After the mess is cleaned up and sanity is restored, paint on your L and E, allow to dry and hang your art. Visit us at woundedgoose.com and see Ruby’s completed project, menus and specials. When you decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Game Night, each week we’re serving a different wild game. The Wounded Goose, celebrating 6 years and now serving beer and wine. We have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t. ---Kat Brabham, owner 740-388-0565

MORE HAIR TRIVIA • Hair is one of the definitive traits of mammals. Only a few mammals are regarded as being generally hairless, including the elephant, rhino, hippo, walrus, pig, whale, dolphin, porpoise, and naked mole rat. • The reason we still have hair in our armpits and groin is to provide a larger surface area for odors to cling to, providing chemical advertising. • The longest documented hair was measured in 2004. It belonged to Xie Qiuping from China, and measured 18.5 feet (5.6 m) long.

FIRST “NEW & IMPROVED”

• Richard Harris was the first person to offer a home permanent for sale. Unfortunately, his first product, called Noma (because it used No Machines) was an inferior product and damaged some hair. Harris reformulated the product and changed the name to Toni because ‘tony’ was a slang term meaning classy. He invented the slogan “new and improved” and was back in business again. • He travelled from town to town giving beauty shop operators free Toni permanent waves so that when customers inquired about them, they could point to their own hair and say, “I’ve got a Toni myself!” Beauty shop operators, worried that they would be run out of business by the new craze in home permanent waves, resisted. Florida made it a crime to do beauty work outside a beauty parlor, and the Kentucky Hairdressers’ Association tried to arrest housewives for operating a beauty parlor without a license. • Housewives retaliated by forming Toni Clubs and making hairdressing a social occasion. Ten years after his disastrous Noma experience, Harris sold Toni to the Gillette corporation for $20 million. (Continued next page)

Board Games Q: Although I don’t consider myself a collector, I buy occasional board games and puzzles when I find good ones at flea markets or garage sales. I currently have almost 50, including “Pollyanna,” “Bomb the Navy,” “Car 54,” “Get Smart” and a 1930s edition of “Monopoly.” How can I find out if any of my games are worth keeping? -- Steve, Dayton, Ohio A: Games create a feeling of nostalgia with many collectors, which has, of course, led to an increase in values. For example, your “Car 54” game, issued in 1951, currently is worth about $300, up at least tenfold from just a decade ago. There are several factors to consider when purchasing older board games. Make certain the game is complete and in good condition. Games that were issued to promote hit TV series are always popular with collectors. Consider “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “The Man from UNCLE,” “Lost in Space” and “The Waltons,” all retailing in the $25-$50 range. Bruce Whitehill is one of the foremost authorities in this field of collecting. His book, “Games: American Board Games and Their Makers 1822-1992” is considered one of the better references. Published by Wallace-Homestead, it also has current values. Whitehill buys, sells and appraises games. There is a charge for appraisals. Contact is Big Game Hunter,

11 South Angell Street, No. 116, Providence, RI 02906; games@thebiggamehunter.com; and www. thebiggamehunter.com. *** Q: In 1971, my wife and I purchased some items from the RMS Queen Mary. They include a ship’s clock plaque, telescope and survival kit whistle. All have certificates of authenticity. I must sell these items and would like to know current values. -- George, Sun City West, Arizona A: You might get a sinking feeling when I tell you what I discovered when I contacted several collectors who specialize in ocean liner collectibles. The items you purchased at the gift shop of the Queen Mary might not be worth much more than what you originally paid. To determine present values, you could monitor eBay to see if similar items are being offered for sale, or contact an expert. Sara Conklin is a member of the International Society of Appraisers, and she is knowledgeable about ocean liner collectibles. Her address is P.O. Box 20203, Cromberg, CA 96103. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. * The Guinness brewery in Dublin, Ireland, has a 9,000-year lease on the property -- and the rent is a mere 45 Irish pounds per year. * Researchers at Yale University have determined that the most recognizable scent to American adults is coffee, followed by peanut butter in the No. 2 spot. * In 1941, the British entered World War II, much to the relief of the USSR. One Soviet admiral was so grateful for the help that when a British naval captain on the submarine HMS Trident commented that his wife had a hard time pushing the baby carriage through the snow in Britain, the admiral declared, “You need a reindeer!” -- and presented the sub’s crew with one. Dubbed Pollyanna, the reindeer spent six weeks aboard the sub, where it reportedly liked to sleep under the captain’s bed. Pollyanna eventually ended up at the Regents Park Zoo. * The state of Mississippi takes its name (unsurprisingly) from the river. But how did the river get its name? Etymologists say that the modern pronunciation is from a French variant of “meshi-ziibi,” which in Algonquian Ojibwa means “big river.” * Those who study such things say that 20 percent of modern relationships that end in marriage begin online. * The red panda is a vulnerable mammal species found in parts of Asia. It’s about the size of a house cat, but its tail can grow up to 19 inches long. * When the Crayola company was approaching a production milestone, executives asked Mister Rogers to come to the factory to pour the wax for the one billionth crayon. *** Thought for the Day: “Imitation is the sincerest form of television.” -- Fred Allen (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

IT’S A FACT The permanent wave was invented in 1906. 74 women tried out the six-hour technique the first year, and 5,000 did it the following year. HAIR DYE In the 1960s, only “hussies” dyed their hair. Shirley Plykoff was the first woman to enter the Advertising Hall of Fame when she created Clairol’s “Does she— or doesn’t she?” ad campaign. Before this campaign, only 7% of American women dyed their hair. Afterwards, 50% did. BARBER BITS A man let his hair grow out for two years so he could get a particular style of haircut when it was long enough. However, the barber he chose did a horrible job, in his opinion, so he filed suit for $10,000. He claimed his social life was a wreck and people made fun of him. He had to wear a hat at all times to hide the haircut, and was seeing a psychiatrist to help him through the trauma. The judge said his hair would grow back and dismissed the charges. In 1956, 40% of barbershop customers were asking for the flattop crew cut. World War II made the crew cut popular, and Elvis Presley doomed it. Richard Savaria was in jail in Billings, Montana facing a charge of felony theft. He stepped out of a line of prisoners and fled from two deputies, making a clean escape. Just two hours later a local barber called police to report that a new customer had shown up in his shop requesting a shave and a haircut. The barber was suspicious of the man and requested police come check the guy out. Sure enough, it was the escaped prisoner. What tipped the barber off? The handcuffs the guy was wearing!

• In 1855 a boy was born in Wisconsin and his mother called him King. Forty years later, King was angry to find his straight razor was too dull to shave well. Back then, men shaved with razors that had to be sharpened often. What a man really needed, King thought, was a razor that was so cheap that dozens of them could be purchased and each one could be thrown away when it became dull. The idea of a disposable razor was born. Toolmakers and engineers told him it was impossible. • Then he teamed up with an inventor named Nickerson, and they perfected the design. In 1903 the first disposable razors went on sale. That year only 51 razors and 168 blades sold, but in 1904, sales totaled 90,000 razors and 12 million blades. The government ordered 3.5 million razors and 36 million blades during World War I. King died in 1932, a millionaire. The company he founded, named after his last name, is one of the largest manufacturers of shaving supplies in the world. What was King’s last name? (Answer at top of next page)

SAUNDERS INSURANCE AGENCY

HAIRY INVENTOR #2: QUIZ

Puzzle Answer on Page 8

• Jacob was a career soldier who found shaving difficult. The disposable razor was issued to all soldiers, but it required water, shaving cream, a basin, and a towel– items not readily available in combat. Jacob wanted a way to shave that required nothing but the razor, so he decided to invent an electric shaver. He drew up plans and sent them to manufacturers, but no one was interested, so he did it himself. • His first model was a two-handed affair, one to hold the motor and one to hold the razor. It was introduced in 1929 but sales were slow and he nearly went bankrupt. (cont’d)

HAIRY INVENTOR #2 (cont’d) • In 1931 Jacob introduced a smaller one-handed model, and sold about 3,000 electric razors for $25 each. He invested every extra penny in advertising, and more than 1.5 million had sold by the time he died in 1937. • The business got a big boost during World War II when a steel shortage made Gillette’s disposable razors hard to come by. Jacob named the company after himself, a German word which means ‘elegance.’ Name it. (Answer at bottom of page)

HAIRY INVENTOR #3: QUIZ

• By the time John was 21, he was already balding. It was 1898 and shampoo didn’t exist. John was sure his hair loss could be blamed on the poor quality of soaps available. He decided to find a soap that would save his hair. So he got a degree in chemistry and spent ten years experimenting. He found the problem with the soaps people used on their hair was that the pH balance was wrong. By 1930 he introduced pH-balanced shampoos for both oily and dry hair, naming the product after himself. It was America’s first shampoo. • When customers failed to flock to his product, John hired an artist to create beautiful fullcolor illustrations of ordinary women with extraordinarily shiny hair, placing the ads prominently in large magazines. It worked. • Alas, the shampoo did not keep John’s hair from falling out, but he became a very rich bald man. In recent times, commercials for John’s shampoo launched the careers of famous models, including Brooke Shields, Kim Basinger, Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, and Cybill Shepherd. What’s the name of John’s shampoo? (answer below) Answer: Schick invented electric razors. Answer: Breck invented shampoo.

• In ancient Rome, vain women had marble statues made of their heads. Many wealthy women also equipped their statues with removable marble wigs, so they could be changed to match the hairstyles. • Queen Elizabeth I of England suffered from smallpox at the age of 29. She survived the illness, but her hair did not and she was bald from then on. To hide the condition, she began to wear ornate and elaborate wigs. As a result, wigs became all the rage across England and Europe, a fashion that lasted for centuries. • King Louis XIV employed 40 wigmakers and needed an entire corridor to hold all his wigs. His personal barber was the only human being ever allowed to see him bald. • Many people powdered their wigs with flour to absorb grease and dirt and make them look cleaner. This led to a shortage of flour in Marie Antoinette’s day, adding to the social unrest and riots that led to the French Revolution. When wig-powdering in England led to a flour shortage in 1795, Parliament decided to tax every citizen who used hair powder. Huge sums were raised before wig-wearing went out of style. • In 1765, men in London began to give up their wigs in favor of natural hair. This worried wigmakers, who staged a demonstration by marching through the streets to the palace. They presented a petition to King George, asking him to force all adult males to wear wigs by royal edict. An opposing group staged a counter-demonstration in which they pretended to represent the wooden leg-makers. They petitioned the king to have a leg removed in order to promote their trade. The King got the point and denied both petitions.

For Advertising Call (740) 441-7633 WIGS (cont’d) • In 1766 an observer wrote, “’Tis almost impossible to make the ladies understand that heads bigger than one’s body are ugly.” • During a skirmish with the Osage Indians, a commander was stunned and slightly wounded by a blow. He fell from his horse, and an Indian came over. The Indian was fascinated by the commander’s stunning head of white hair, and he grabbed a handful in preparation for scalping the man. The commander leapt to his feet and ran off, leaving the surprised Indian holding a handful of hair. He’d never seen a wig before and was convinced it was a magical scalp because it had fallen off in his hand. The wig became his prized possession and he was henceforward known as Paw-Hu-Scah, meaning “white hair.” When he became chief, the town that grew up around his settlement was named Pawhuska, Oklahoma. • A wigmaker in Sydney, Australia branched into a new area: providing false hairpieces for the chest of men who are “bald” on their chest. He reportedly made a model that would even stay on in the water. • In Rome, there were few natural blondes, so the government declared that blonde hair would henceforth be known as a badge of sin. Wicked ladies were licensed, taxed, and required to dye their hair blonde or wear yellow wigs. Today, we still feel that blonds “have more fun.” —Joke— • William Rose Benét was looking through the window of a wig shop. Two identical toupees were displayed on wig stands. “They’re as alike as toupees in a pod,” said Benét to his companion.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m prediabetic. I have known you and others to say not to eat any grain that is not whole wheat. Based on that, I leave off white rice, pasta and white rolls. I eat two wholewheat rolls most days. Does that sound right? I am underweight. -- S.R. ANSWER: It is much better and easier to prevent diabetes than it is to treat it. Diet and exercise are proven to help prevent diabetes in everyone, even your less-common situation of being normal or underweight and at risk for diabetes. The most important part of diet is to avoid simple sugars. Processed grains are converted extremely rapidly to sugar in the body. The added fiber and protein of whole grains slows this process down somewhat; however, I still would recommend having your grains with some healthy fat and protein. Nuts, olive oil and healthy vegetable spreads go great with whole-grain rolls and slow down absorption. By having foods in combination, you can reduce diabetes risk. Don’t forget about exercise, the other key to preventing diabetes. Any exercise is better than none. Walking is a great form of exercise that takes no special equipment and can be done anywhere. At 10,000 steps a day, which is not very hard to build up to, the risk of diabetes is significantly decreased. An inexpensive pedometer can keep track of your steps and may motivate you to reach your goal. Diabetes has become epidemic in North America. The booklet on it provides insight on its diagnosis and treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been taking Zoloft for almost 10 years now. My psychiatrist believes I should stay on the medication for the rest of my life due to three serious episodes of depression. Now that I go regularly for counseling, I am starting to see the root of the depression and am aware of the triggers. As I get older, I worry about the long-term effects of this drug. Are there any studies about long-term effects of Zoloft and similar medications? I’m also interested in your view on the necessity of anti-depressants as a permanent solution for people with my condition. I’ve read that antidepressants are not proven to be better than placebos. -- N.M. ANSWER: Depression can be a terrible disease, but for most people there are effective treatments. Zoloft is in the class of medications called SSRIs, and these work in the brain where nerve cells communicate with each other. There are some studies and a lot of experience with using these medications long term. They are mostly safe, better than placebo and certainly better than the risk of recurrent depression, which after three episodes is very high. Counseling (psychotherapy) is another effective treatment. Effective counseling may reduce the risk for recurrent depression, but I would not stop the medication without being carefully followed by your counselor and psychiatrist. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

* On April 25, 1719, Daniel Defoe’s fictional work “The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe” is published. Charlotte’s two older sisters died of illness while at Clergy Daughter’s School. The grim institution found its way into her masterpiece “Jane Eyre” (1847). * On April 26, 1913, 13-year-old Mary Phagan is found molested and murdered in the Atlanta pencil factory where she worked. Her murder led to one of the most disgraceful episodes of bigotry, injustice and mob violence in American history -- the lynching of her innocent Jewish boss, Leo Frank. * On April 22, 1934, George “Baby Face” Nelson kills Special Agent W. Unfortunately for him, his youthful looks led everyone to call him “Baby Face.” * On April 24, 1940, bestselling mystery novelist Sue Grafton, creator of private eye Kinsey Millhone, is born. Starting with “A Is for Alibi” in 1982 and titling each of her books with letters of the alphabet in order, Grafton is currently up to W, for “Wasted.”

The 5000+ Percent Advantage 4.6: Proceed Forward –Nourishes Your Soul By Ron Ross Doing nothing is the hardest work there is. If you do physical work all day long you will come home tired. If you get up late and lay around the house all day in your pajamas, eat junk food, leave the dishes in the sink, let the yard go to seed and then moan and complain that all you have is bad luck you will also be exhausted at the end of the day. Laziness and work are both exhausting: work exhausts the body but laziness exhausts the soul. The exhaustion that comes from laziness is disheartening and destructive while the exhaustion that comes from meaningful work is restorative and constructive. When you finally decide to seek the 5000+ percent advantage and proceed forward toward your goals you will find the hard work you do, the difficult tasks you face, the problems you encounter and solve will make you tired, but it will be a good kind of tired; the kind of tired that lets you know you made real progress, that your presence on this planet makes a difference. People with no purpose for living, no identifiable goals, no vision for a better life are miserable, pathetic, selfish and goodfor-nothing. They don’t seek to improve themselves, they blame others for their plight, and should some opportunity come their way, they do all they can to find fault with it and sabotage it so they can return to their comfortable misery. Those kinds of people have their own theme song called The Worm Song. It goes like this: “Nobody loves me, everybody hates

me, guess I’ll go eat worms. Long thin slimy ones, short fat juicy ones, itsy, bitsy, squirmy little worms.” How depressing is that? You want the opposite of depression, you want joy, and that requires the pursuit of a meaningful life. That requires taking action toward fulfilling your God-given destiny. Do not be afraid of the work it will take to become the person you were meant to be. Your soul is nourished when your mind and body work together to accomplish goals, improve skills, solve problems, fix what is broken, strengthen what is weak, and finish what needs to be completed. Your soul is nourished when you have done something that cost you some real effort; that pushed you to the edge; that made you get out of your fetal crouch and stand tall and proud. Your soul is nourished as each accomplishment and each step forward gives you courage to proceed ever farther forward – even if they are baby steps. Your soul is nourished when your attention is focused on progress not retreat, on hope not despair and on courage not cowardice. Lots of people have the desire but few have the determination. People wish their lives were better but only a few get the 5000+ advantage. They are the ones who proceed forward and pursue every opportunity to improve their lives, to make a difference, to enjoy a life with meaning. The wisest and richest man who ever lived said, “The sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.”* The difference between the sluggard and the diligent is the difference between success and failure. *Proverbs 13:4 ©2015 Ronald D. Ross

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com Childproofing Blinds Q: A friend told me that the cords on my apartment blinds weren’t safe, and that kids or my cat could get tangled up in them. I’m not sure what to do to make them safe -- should I replace the blinds? -- Val in Duluth, Georgia

A: Window blinds manufactured for sale in the U.S. are required to have a safety feature installed to prevent children or pets from getting tangled up in the pull cords. Older window blinds manufactured before 1991 may not have this feature. The blinds’ manufacturer should include instructions for cord safety. If you can’t locate them, you can find general information at websites like the Window Covering Safety Council at windowcoverings.org. Look on the pull cords of your window blinds for cord stops. These are small round plastic discs threaded through the cords. Here’s how to use them to make the pull cords safer, from the WCSC (www.windowcoverings.org/how-to-retrofit/): 1. Lower the blind to its proper closed length and tug the cords slightly to the right to lock them in position. 2. To install a new cord stop, pinch together a section of the pull cord (near the top of the cord) and slide the plastic disc over the pinched-together cord so that you create a loop threaded through the disc 3. Keeping the loop large for now, bring the bottom part of the same pull cord through the loop and then tug it into a loose half-knot under the disc. 4. Adjust the disc until it is about 2 inches below the blinds’ head rail and tighten the knot. Repeat with the other cords. 5. The bottom of each cord shouldn’t hang past the bottom window sash when the blinds are closed. Shorten them by cutting each cord above the plastic tassel to a safer length, then re-threading the tassel onto the cord and securing with a knot tied on the end. If you have young children or adventurous pets, consider replacing the blinds with safer cordless models as soon as possible. TIP: A quick add to your advice on calibrating digital thermostats: Check the batteries. If they’re worn out, the thermostat behaves erratically. -- Denis in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Send your home tips and questions to ask@ thisisahammer.com.

If you don’t have the money to pay the taxes you owe, there are a few different ways you can clear your debt with the IRS. First things first, however: If you didn’t file a tax return because you don’t have the money to pay what you owe, you’ll need to call the IRS immediately, before your error is compounded. Call 1-800-829-1040 and ask to set up a payment plan. That will at least get you to the right department where the agents are mostly interested in helping you figure out a way to pay. Admit that you haven’t filed because you don’t have the money, and that you need to set up a payment plan. If you filed but didn’t send any money, your next step depends on how much time you need. If you need only a short period of time, say a few weeks, wait until the IRS sends you a bill in about a month, after they’ve processed all the other returns. Even if you can’t pay the whole thing at once, pay what you can and call them for an extension. There will be penalties and fees for being late, and they will continue to accrue the longer you wait. If you need an extension of up to 120 days, there is no fee involved, but the penalties will continue to add up. Depending on what you owe, you might qualify for an installment agreement. You can call or send in Form 9465, the Installment Agreement Request. Your best bet is to call and talk to one of the agents, who will help you determine what you can realistically pay each month. There are multiple options: direct debit from your bank account, payroll deduction, mailing a monthly check and others. There is a $120 fee for setting up an installment agreement with a mailed check or payroll deduction, and that’s due upfront. If you allow a direct debit from your bank account, the fee is $52. If at all possible, get the money you need without doing a payment plan with the IRS. Take the cash off a credit card, especially if you have one with a zero interest rate. Borrow the money. Sell something. Whatever you do, don’t try to avoid paying.

Living With a Purpose Seniors who have a purpose in life are less likely to develop damage in the areas in the brain that can cause stroke, according to a recent study from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago. Damage in the same areas also can cause disability, death and dementia. In this study, more than 450 seniors with an average age of 84 were tested until death. Those with purpose were 44 percent less likely to have larger areas of damage in the brain. In another study of some 1,000 seniors at the Rush Center, those who scored high on having purpose to their lives were 2.4 times more likely to avoid Alzheimer’s and cognitive impairment. It even cut the mortality rate in half. Here are some ideas to get you thinking about ways you can add purpose to your days. * Check up on others to make sure they’re OK. Maybe they will be residents in your building who come to count on your twice daily checks. Maybe it will be friends you reach by phone. * Volunteer, and then follow through. Read to small children at daycare or kindergarten. Shelve books at the library once a week. If you’re still driving well, sign up to help other seniors get to doctor appointments, shopping, personal errands and more. * Discover what is rewarding and fulfilling to you. Join a book club, take a class, assist with socializing animals at a shelter, become the adopted grandparent in a school classroom, attend free art shows or films, train to be a museum docent ... the list is nearly endless. Forms Now Required for Claims, Appeals The back-of-the-envelope method of filing a disability-benefits claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs is no more. Any veteran wishing to file claims or appeals now will need to use the correct form. The forms will walk you through describing your symptoms or conditions, which will help get your claim moving in the right direction. The change is to help the VA clear up the backlog by the end of this year. The following situations need the standardized forms: Veteran or survivor application for disability compensation or pension: VA Form 21526EZ, Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits, for veterans filing for disability benefits, or Wartime veteran filing for pension: VA Form 21-527EZ, Application for Pension, or Survivor filing for dependency and indemnity compensation, pension and accrued benefits: VA Form 21-534EZ, Application for DIC, Death Pension, and/or Accrued Benefits. Veteran wishing to appeal a disability decision: VA Form 21-0958, Notice of Disagreement. (Right now veterans and survivors won’t have to use that form to start appeals for pension or survivor benefit decisions.) There are three ways to start the claims process with an intent to file (giving yourself a year to get it done): Access eBenefits online; complete a VA Form 21-0966, Intent to File a Claim for Compensation and/or Pension, or Survivors Pension and/or DIC; or call the VA at 800-827-1000. The VA recommends that veterans filing claims or appeals work with a Veterans Service Organization representative, who’s skilled with a computer or familiar with the forms. Consider it a way to get your claim right the first time.

* Putting in your spring garden? To keep your fingernails from developing a dirt problem, use this classic tip: Rake your nails over a bar of soap. It “seals” the gap underneath, and later when you wash your hands, the soap slips right out ... no need to spend time scrubbing out the dirt! -JoAnn

Now, when you go to put plants in the ground, you can space them out perfectly by laying down your tool along the planting line.” -- C.O. in Arkansas Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
