In May 27, 1796, the first U.S. patent for a piano was issued in the U.S. to James McLean of New Jersey, for “an improvement in piano fortes.” Although there were many patents on improved designs for pianos over the years, this was the first piano patent awarded in the U.S. Come along with Tidbits as we play the piano! A LONG HISTORY • The piano’s ancestors include the harp, the hammered dulcimer, and the psaltery, which is a box-type instrument with strings that were either plucked or bowed. When a new design allowed strings to be plucked when keys were depressed, the harpsichord was born and it quickly became a popular instrument in the 1600s. From there came similar but slightly different instruments: the clavichord and the spinet, which led to the invention of the piano. • On a harpsicord, the strings are plucked when the musician’s fingers hit the keys. It has a higher pitch than the piano, the notes cannot be sustained, and there’s no way to vary how loudly the instrument plays. The piano, by contrast, has strings that are hit by hammers, meaning the musician can play either softly or loudly. “Piano” is the Italian word for soft and “forte” is the Italian word for loud. The piano’s original name was “pianoforte” meaning “soft/loud” and was then shortened to just piano. (Continued next page)

NEW DEVELOPMENTS An Italian man named Bartolomeo Cristoforti built the first practical piano in 1700. He originally called it a “gravicembalo col piano e forte” (the “great harpsichord with soft and loud capabilities”). Three Cristofori pianos survive today. They were made in the 1720s, making them the oldest pianos in existence. The piano replaced the harpsichord in popularity by the end of the 1700s. Piano building began in America in 1775. The Industrial Revolution made high-quality piano wire readily available. In England, John Broadwood developed machines to manufacture pianos, reducing the cost. By 1870, Steinway & Sons were in business. By 1911, there were 301 piano builders in the U.S. Production peaked in the 1920s and declined during the Great Depression. Today, there are approximately 15 piano manufacturers in the United States, but more pianos are built in Japan than any other country. The piano has the largest range of volume of any acoustic instrument, as well as the widest range of notes, from below the lowest note of the double bassoon to above the top note of the piccolo. It allows more notes to be played simultaneously than any other instrument and is the only instrument (aside from the organ) that can play both the melody and the accompaniment at the same time. It’s also the largest instrument. The piano’s design has not changed for nearly 100 years. IT’S A FACT Pianist Arthur Rubinstein was in the lobby of the concert hall, watching the capacity crowd come in to hear him play when the ticket agent put out the “Sold Out” sign. The agent, mistaking Rubinstein for a member of the audience, informed the pianist that there were no seats available. “May I be seated at the piano?” he asked.

Fat Cat
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Sandy” has had a weight problem for a few years now. His veterinarian recommended giving him less food and more exercise, but it hasn’t helped. What else can I do? -- Craig in Grand Rapids, Michigan DEAR CRAIG: First, take Sandy in for a complete health evaluation at the vet -- if one hasn’t been done lately -- just to rule out any underlying issues. Then, if his health is fine, start re-evaluating his regime. Like humans, pets can fall into routines where they get far less exercise and eat much more than an owner may estimate. Many pets also are masters at sneaking food when we’re not looking. So, here are some tips to help jump-start Sandy’s weight loss: * Follow the vet’s recommended feeding amounts exactly. Use a measuring cup.
* If you don’t get a recommended amount, follow this guideline for indoor cats: about 20 calories per pound of weight. So, a 10-pound cat needs about 200 calories per day to maintain that weight, while a 15-pound cat needs about 300 calories per day. Lower those calorie amounts slightly -- about 40 fewer calories per day -- for weight loss. * Double your pet’s activity time. Do you swing a toy in front of your cat for 5-10 minutes each evening while your TV shows are on? Make it 20 minutes. * Reset the routine for both of you. Carve out play or exercise time in the morning and evening. * Provide your cat plenty of distractions from the food bowl: catnip-laced toys, scratching posts, etc. Send your questions or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. Welcome to Goose Tips!
Last week we planted fresh herbs in our window sills. Fresh rosemary, thyme, dill, basil and cilantro will soon be in abundance and in all your favorite dishes. In walks Mom: if you know me personally, you know I come from a family full of talent. I’m the cook-Tim can fix anything-Samantha is the DIYer and Mom has the green thumb. Let the lesson begin. Armed with nothing more than a Wounded Goose pint glass, my green onion scraps and a pitcher of water, Mom has green onions growing in our windows. She put the scraps root down in a glass of water, stuck them in the window sills and to my surprise they’re growing fast. In a week we’ve got 3-4 inches of new onions. It’s handy and practical. I think we’ve got enough for the salad bar, our BBQ chip appetizer and plenty of loaded baked potatoes. She says celery, ginger, garlic and lemongrass are up next for growing from scraps. When you decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Wild Game night. Each week we’re serving a different Wild Game. Find the game calendar, our monthly specials and the whole menu at woundedgoose.com. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t! ---Kat Brabham, owner 740-388-0565

PIANO PEDALS • Why do most pianos have three pedals? When you hit a piano key, a hammer hits the strings. The strings ring until the key is let up, when a damper falls on the strings and stops the sound. When the right pedal is depressed, the strings are not dampened and continue to ring, giving a rich resonating tone. Each piano hammer normally strikes three strings for a full tone, but when the left pedal is pressed, the hammers shift position so that they fall on only two of the three strings for a softer tone. When the middle pedal is pressed, it will sustain the notes of the keys that are down when the pedal is pressed, but no other notes that are played afterwards, so a pianist can play rumbling notes at the bottom of the scale and have them sustained while playing tinkly high notes at the top of the scale. • When you soft-pedal something, you are referring to the pedal on a piano which is used to mute the tone. When you pull out all the stops, you are acting like an organist who pulls out all the knobs, or stops, in order to use all the organ pipes. NOTED COMPOSERS • Mozart challenged Haydn to play an impossible piece of music which resulted in hands at both ends of the piano and a note to be played in the middle, which Haydn could not do. But Mozart triumphantly bobbed down and used his nose to strike the key. • “I always make sure that the lid over the keyboard is open before I start to play.” -Artur Schnabel, Australian pianist, when asked the secret of piano playing. • Musician Max Reger played piano in Schubert’s “Trout” quintet in a concert and later received a basket of trout from an admirer. He wrote the fan a letter thanking him for the gift, and casually mentioned that in his next concert he was going to perform Haydn’s “Minuet of the Ox.”

by Samantha Weaver * It was noted educator and civil-rights activist W.E.B. DuBois who made the following sage observation: “The theory of democratic government is not that the will of the people is always right, but rather that normal human beings of average intelligence will, if given a chance, learn the right and best course by bitter experience.” * Before he became famous as the creator of “Star Trek,” Gene Roddenberry was a beat cop for the LAPD. He even wrote speeches for legendary Los Angeles police Chief William H. It seems that aspirational lyrics that speak of overcoming hardship and picturing a better future, such as owning expensive cars, can provide an uplift to listeners. * The U.S.S. NOTED COMPOSERS (cont’d) • Russian composer Anton Rubinstein would often sleep late. His wife devised a scheme to get him out of bed. She would go up to the piano above his bedroom and loudly play unresolved chords. Rubinstein, who couldn’t stand unresolved chords, would jump out of bed and rush up to the piano to play the final chords, and his wife would sneak into his bedroom and make up the bed. • Russian pianist Vladimir Pachmann enjoyed teasing audiences. A favorite trick was to play endlessly with the piano stool before starting to play. He would twist it up then lower it, adjusting and readjusting it until the audience became impatient. Then he would rush offstage and return with a large book, placing it on the stool. He would settle down, ready to begin the recital when suddenly he’d stand up one more time, rip a single page from the book— and then begin to play. • When the cat belonging to composer Domenico Scarlatti walked across his piano keys, it inspired him to write “Cat’s Fugue.” • Polish pianist Josef Hofmann walked on stage at a concert, waited for the applause to die down, sat blankly at his piano for a moment, then leaned over and asked a woman in the first row, “May I see your program for a moment? I have forgotten what comes first!” • Oscar Levant was giving a piano concert when, during the middle of the piece, a phone began ringing very loudly off-stage. Levant continued to play but the phone kept ringing. Finally he paused, turned to the audience, and said, “If that’s for me, tell them I’m busy.” Once he was annoyed when a woman arrived late for a concert and began walking down the center aisle to find her seat as he was playing. He began to play in time to her steps. She walked quickly, he played quickly. She hesitated, he hesitated. She slowed down, he slowed down. By the time she reached her seat, the audience was hysterical.

Noteworthy Inventions HEINRICH STEINWEG Heinrich Steinweg was born in Germany in 1797. After being orphaned at the age of 15, he went to work as a carpenter. Later he apprenticed to an organ builder, where he discovered a natural talent for music. Soon he became the organist for the local church. He began to build instruments in his kitchen, doing it secretly to avoid trouble with the local union guild. He started with zithers and guitars before moving on to pianos. In 1935 he built a square piano as a wedding gift for his bride, and a baby grand he constructed in 1836 is now on display at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because of the unstable political situation in Germany, Steinweg sent one of his sons over to the U.S. to scope out possibilities. A year later, he followed with his wife and five more sons, leaving one son behind in Germany to continue the family piano-building business there. He and his sons worked in various piano factories in New York until they were able to establish their own company in 1853. At this point Heinrich Steinweg changed his name to Henry Steinway, and called his company Steinway & Sons. Just two years later, one of their pianos earned them first prize at the New York Industrial Fair. This was followed by more awards. By 1862, Steinway pianos had received more than 35 medals. Composers Franz Liszt and Anton Rubinstein swore that Steinways were the best pianos available. Steinway’s fame spread. In 1866 Steinway invented and constructed the first upright piano. That’s also the year they founded Steinway Hall in New York City. The acoustics were excellent and the theater seated 2000 people. This served as New York’s premiere concert hall until Carnegie Hall opened in 1891.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 HENRY STEINWAY, cont’d • Anyone attending an event at Steinway Hall had to pass through the lobby where a variety of Steinway pianos were diplayed. This increased demand for the pianos, and they sold an extra 400 pianos the first year alone. • The company moved to its current location in Astoria, New York, and built Steinway Village. Virtually its own town, Steinway Village had its own foundries, factory, post office, parks and housing for employees. With a workforce of 350 men, production increased from 500 to 1,800 pianos per year. • The Steinway company was granted 127 patents for improvements in the piano over the years. By the time Henry died in 1871, leaving his sons to carry on, Steinway pianos were known as the world’s finest. • By 1900 the company was producing 3,500 pianos a year. Steinway & Co. presented their 100,000th grand piano to President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, and in 1938, the Steinway’s 300,000th piano was given to President Franklin Roosevelt. It still occupies the East Room in the White House. • During World War II, Steinway built 2,436 special models called the “Victory Vertical” or “G.I. Piano.” It was a small piano that four men could lift, painted olive drab, and designed to be carried aboard ships or dropped by parachute from an airplane to bring music to the soldiers. • Until his death in 2008 at the age of 93, Henry Z. Steinway, the great-grandson of the Steinway founder, still worked for Steinway. He was the last Steinway family member to be president of the company. • Steinway & Sons crafts approximately 2,500 pianos a year worldwide not only in Astoria, New York, but also in Hamburg, Germany. Each Steinway takes about a year to build. Prices start at $50,000 and a Steinway never loses its value.

VICTOR BORGE • Victor Borge was born Borge Rosenbaum in 1909 in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father was a musician and his mother was a pianist, and Victor followed in their footsteps, starting out as a classical pianist but finding he also had a gift for humor. By the 1930s he was one of Denmark’s most popular performers. • When the Nazis occupied Denmark during World War II, Borge was playing a concert in Sweden. Instead of going home to Denmark, he escaped to Finland and then traveled to America on the last neutral ship to make it out of Finland. He arrived in New York City in 1940 with $20 to his name. • He didn’t speak a word of English but learned the language by going to the movies. One of his first gigs was at a large club in Florida, for which he was to be paid one dollar for each member of the audience. Three hundred guests saw his show. When it came time to be paid, Borge pointed out to the management that the club’s 40 waiters had also greatly enjoyed his performance. He got $340. • The gimmick that launched Borge to fame almost immediately in the U.S. involved him reading perfectly normal sentences, while making different sounds for every punctuation mark. In 1941 he performed his gig to warm up the radio audience for the Bing Crosby show, and ended up being a regular on the Bing Crosby show for the next 56 weeks. The following year he was proclaimed “the best new radio performer of the year” and later had his own radio show on NBC.

• His wacky brand of musical comedy propelled him to great heights. He made a habit of falling off piano stools, getting tangled up in the sheet music, and completely missing the piano keyboard with his hands. He played elaborate renditions of “Happy Birthday” in the style of Mozart, Brahms, Wagner, and Beethoven with great wit.

For Advertising Call (740) 441-7633 VICTOR BORGE (cont’d) • He would sometimes begin a performance by asking if there were any kids in the audience. He would say, “We do have some children in here; that means I can’t do the second half in the nude. I’ll wear the tie. (pause) The long one. (pause) The very long one, yes.” • Borge would play a strange-sounding piano tune from sheet music, looking increasingly confused. He would then turn the sheet upside down, and then play the actual tune. When his energetic playing would cause him to fall off the piano bench, he would open the seat lid, take out the two ends of an automotive seat belt, and buckle himself onto the bench. After finishing the song, he would stand to take a bow, but the bench would be lifted up because he forgot to unbuckle the seat belt. • The theater program always listed 19 numbers he was to perform. They were: 1) Frankly 2) We 3) Don’t 4) Know 5) What 6) Mr. Borge 7) Will 8) Do 9) But 10) We’re 11) Sure 12) He’ll 13) Keep 14) Us 15) Posted 16) From 17) Time 18) To 19) Time.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Woman Is Fit, But Can Barely Stand DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year-old female. Even though I use gym weight machines for upper and lower body three times a week, walk daily for 2 miles and spend 15 minutes on a motion trainer at the gym, I cannot stand up easily after gardening on my knees or getting on my knees on the floor. Is there anything I can do to regain the ability to get up off the floor/ground without a struggle? -- S.C. ANSWER: It sounds to me that despite your good exercise regimen, you may have weakness specifically in your thighs -- what we call “proximal muscle weakness.” There is a very long list of medical illnesses that affect these muscles specifically (my textbook lists 28 different diagnoses), including common conditions such as low thyroid levels and vitamin D deficiency. I would recommend a visit to your doctor for a careful exam of your nerves and muscles to see if my suspicion is correct. Your doctor may suggest a trial of vitamin D. If no medical cause is found, I would work specifically on strengthening the hip muscles, which extend the thighs. A trainer at the gym can show you those exercises. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Both of my daughters are in their 40s and going through menopause (according to their doctors, so they are not guessing about this). Both daughters are having such severe migraine headaches that they are missing work (and both are practically workaholics who usually are able to tough it through physical problems). The migraines occur almost every time they have a period. Migraines are not daily during that time, but episodic (usually one per period). They do not have migraines except during menses. One daughter was put on estrogen, which has helped her cramping, but she still is getting migraines. The other daughter has been referred to three physicians who all told her there was nothing that could be done but go on estrogen. She is now 49 years old and concerned that if she goes on estrogen at this point, she will simply have the same migraine issues again when she goes off it and wonders if that is actually worth just delaying having to deal with the migraines. Is there any other solution besides estrogen for severe hormonal migraines? -- S.S. ANSWER: Estrogen-associated migraine is common. However, it usually is the drop in estrogen that triggers the migraine. That’s the reason many women get migraines around the time of their periods, as estrogen levels normally decline then. For many women, migraines get worse years before menopause -- and by “menopause,” I mean when periods stop altogether. As the periods become erratic, and sleep cycles are interrupted by hot flashes, migraines become worse, as they have in your daughters. However, once periods stop entirely, episodic migraines usually get dramatically better on their own. During the erratic time before menses completely stop, estrogen pills, cream or an insertable ring can be used to maintain a more constant estrogen level, which usually improves the headaches. This can be slowly tapered off when the periods could be expected to be finished. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. BOW BRANDS WE STOCK: Q: What upgrades to our house will pay off the most in the long run? -- Karl V., Melrose, Massachusetts A: Many people think that remodeling the kitchen is an expense they can fully recoup (in terms of home value or resale value), but that is not necessarily the case. According to Remodeling Magazine, which puts out a Cost vs. Value chart each year on home remodeling, a major kitchen remodel averaging $56,768 will recoup 67.8 percent of that cost, or just $38,485. However, a number of indoor and outdoor projects will increase the value of your home. Here are five projects on the midrange cost scale that will provide the biggest return for your remodeling investment: 1. Entry door: Replacing your entry door with a steel door will recoup 101.8 percent of the cost. (Replacing it with a fiberglass door will return 72 percent.) 2. Veneer: Replacing the bottom third of your home’s exterior siding with manufactured stone veneer will recoup 92.2 percent of the cost. 3. Garage door: Replacing your garage door will recoup 88.4 percent of the cost. 4. Siding replacement: Adding vinyl siding to your home’s exterior will recoup 80.7 percent of the cost. 5. Wooden deck: Adding or expanding a wooden deck will recoup 80.5 percent of the cost. Other projects that have a higher chance of recouping their cost include a minor (below $20,000) kitchen remodel (79.3 percent), wood window replacement (78.8 percent) or converting part of your attic to a bedroom (77.2 percent). Remodeling your bathroom will recoup 70 percent of its cost. So, when putting together a remodeling project list, take their lasting value into account. You may decide to downscale that ambitious kitchen or bathroom remodel and shift some of the budget to your home’s exterior elements. TIP: Wood or vinyl windows? Carefully consider the merits of both before deciding on replacement windows. For example, wood windows are aesthetically pleasing, but vinyl windows require almost no maintenance. *** NOTE: This is my final print column for This Is A Hammer. It’s been a great, 14-year run with King Features Weekly Service. But it’s not going away completely: You can find archived

Have Scammers Stolen Your Tax Refund? If your tax e-file was rejected or you were expecting a tax refund long before now, there’s a chance that you’ve been the victim of identity theft. In fact, your only warning might be a notice from the IRS saying you’ve already filed and received your tax refund. The letter might say that more than one return was filed with your Social Security number, or that you owe additional tax, or that they received W-2 or 1099 forms for an employer you don’t know, or that your Notice of Earnings from Social Security has more income than you actually earned. The bottom line is that it means your Social Security number has been compromised. Here are the steps you need to take: * Call the IRS. Use the number on the letter it send you. * If you received a W-2 or 1099 from an employer you don’t know, call Social Security. Go over your actual earnings to be sure they match what you know to be correct. * Call the police and file a report. * Notify the big three credit reporting agencies and have a fraud alert put on your file: www.Equifax.com (1-800-525-6285), www.Experian.com (1-888-397-3742), www.TransUnion.com (1-800-680-7289). * Complete IRS form 14039, which is the Identity Theft Affidavit. You can download that at IRS.gov. * File a complaint with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov. If you get suspicious emails that you think are phishing scams about your taxes, let the IRS know. Send email to phishing@irs.gov; or call 1-800-366-4484. For more information, go online to the IRS.gov website and search for Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft. Also search for Publication 5027, which is Identity Theft Information for Taxpayers. Then see www. irs.gov/identitytheft. For future years, the advice is to file as early in the season as possible. If someone else does attempt to use your Social Security number, your own return will already be there. Beware to whom you give your Social Security number, especially on employment applications. Provide the number only if hired. Learn to do your own taxes using a computer software program, then print them out and send by certified mail. Keep control of your personal information. If your identity is used in an IRS tax scam, you could wait more than six months for it to be resolved and your refund to arrive. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

And here comes summer ... For many of us around the country, this past winter was a brutal one, and long. Now that the weather is warming up, we’re eager to enjoy it. Seniors need to be cautious, however, in dealing with summer. If you don’t have fans or air conditioning, start looking now for places that donate fans to seniors. Try the local senior center, fire department or town offices. They’re likely to know when and where fans will be given out. If you live in a humid area, consider whether buying a one-room window air conditioner will help. Besides cooling the air, they remove moisture, which makes it feel cooler. If you can, sign up for afternoon classes at the senior center or spend afternoons at the library, movies or mall. Seniors often don’t sense their level of thirst, either from aging or medications. Know the signs of dehydration: dry mouth, headache, limb cramps, dark urine or only a small amount of urine, or being unable to sleep. Becoming dehydrated can have serious effects on the body’s organs, so be sure to drink enough water. Caffeinated or sugared drinks like coffee and soft drinks will only make things worse. Ask your doctor for a specific number of ounces of water you should drink per day. Remember: If you’re thirsty, you’re already getting dehydrated. Dress lightly (but carry a sweater in case you go into air-conditioned spaces), and wear sunglasses and a woven wide-brim hat when you go out. Start planning now for recipes that don’t heat up the kitchen. Consider sandwiches, salads, fruit and vegetables that cook quickly. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Sexual Assault Rates
A new RAND study for the Defense Department concludes that cases of sexual assault in the military are down, but that reporting of those assaults is up. More than half a million active and reserve service members were invited to participate in the Military Workplace Study, and 170,000 responded. The study measured sexual assault, sexual harassment (sexually hostile work environment, sexual coercion) and gender discrimination. The numbers are bad. Over 20,000 service members were sexually assaulted in the past year, 10,600 men and 9,600 women. With activity-duty personnel, 90 percent occurred in a military setting or were perpetrated by military personnel. Reserve personal had lower rates of assault, but 81 percent of assailants were military and it occurred in a military setting 63 percent of the time. Men experienced “multiple incidents in the past year,” were assaulted by multiple offenders during a single incident and were assaulted at work during duty hours. Men preferred to describe the events as hazing or abuse or humiliation, and were less likely to report the incidents. RAND estimated that 116,000 service members were assaulted in the past year, 22 percent of women and 7 percent of men. Of women who reported an assault, 52 percent believe there was retaliation afterward. That, however, isn’t the reason most didn’t report the incident. Instead they wanted to forget it and move on. While the number of assaults has decreased, the rate of retaliation has not. The Air Force had lower rates of assault than the other branches, where women had 1.7 times the risk of assault and men had 4 to 5 times the risk. To see the whole study, you can download the four sections for free at www.rand.org/surveys/ rmws.html.
