TIDBITS® PRESENTS A JUNE JUMBLE by Kathy Wolfe Summer is just around the corner, and Tidbits is taking the opportunity to bring you up to date on a few of June’s facts and historical events. • June is most likely named after the mythological Roman goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter. Juno was the goddess of marriage, which explains why it is considered good luck to get married in June. • The solstice occurs between June 20 and 22. In the northern hemisphere, it’s the summer solstice, while to those living in the southern hemisphere, it’s the winter solstice. At this time, the Earth is at a point in its orbit that the North Pole is leaning most toward the sun, as far north as the sun ever gets during the year. Everywhere north of the equator experiences days longer than 12 hours at the June solstice, while locations south of the equator have days shorter than 12 hours.

• The first Corvette rolled off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan, on June 30, 1953. It was Polo White with a red interior, automatic transmission, wraparound windshield, and the ability to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 12 seconds. It was the innovation of GM designer Harley Earl, who desired to have an American sports car that could compete with the Jaguar, Ferrari, and MG. There were just 300 Corvettes made that year, with a sticker price of $3,490. … turn the page for more!

JUMBLE (continued): • Indianapolis, Indiana, was home to the final concert performed by Elvis Presley, an event held at Market Square Arena on June 26, 1977. His last song sung to a live audience was “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” Less than two months later, Elvis died in his Memphis, Tennessee, home. • On June 2, 2004, software engineer Ken Jennings made his first appearance on the popular game show Jeopardy, beginning a record-setting winning streak. By the time he was defeated, he had won 74 consecutive games, racking up winnings of $2,520,700. The program’s ratings were 22% higher during Jennings’ string of wins over the previous year. Jennings didn’t stop with Jeopardy, but went on to appear on Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, Grand Slam, Stump the Master, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. In addition, he appeared on Jeopardy’s Tournament of Champions, which brought his total Jeopardy winnings to $3,196,300. Jennings has writing four books, including Brainiac: Adventures in the Curious, Competitive, Compulsive World of Trivia Buffs. • Every June, Belmont, New York, is home to the Belmont Stakes, a 1.5 mile (2.4-km) horse race that is the third leg of the American Triple Crown. It’s held five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes, on a Saturday between June 5 and 11. On June 11, 1919, the chestnut thoroughbred Sir Barton became the first horse to win the Triple Crown, even though that name had not yet been conceived. There have been 11 horses that have won the coveted crown since 1919, including 1973’s winner, Secretariat, the horse that holds the record for fastest time. There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since 1978, when jockey Steve Cauthen rode Affirmed to victory.

DEAR FRANK: There are three questions you must ask in order to determine whether you can bring along Sarah and Jake: 1. Does the campsite allow pets? 2. Are the other families OK with you bringing pets? 3. Are Sarah and Jake well-socialized to children and to other pets? While many state and federal parks allow pets at campsites, others don’t. Some have specific restrictions, such as, pets are allowed at campsites but not in certain areas of the park where there’s an ecological risk. Check the campsite or park’s website for specific rules about pets. Also, check the park’s safety

advisories: Are you camping in bear country, or are other hazards present? Second, since it’s your first time camping with this group, ask the other campers if they are comfortable with pets coming along. It’s up to you to make sure they are well-behaved and will swiftly obey your commands when off-leash. If everything checks out, then start planning. Make sure Sarah and Jake have their needs met -- food, toys, leashes. Bring sweaters and booties just in case. Carry cleanup bags and a large trash bag for disposal at the campsite. At night they will need to be kept in the tent or in a portable kennel. Finally, make sure their heartworm and shots are up to date, and check them daily while camping for ticks, fleas, and burrs. Welcome to Goose Tips!
Last week we planted fresh herbs in our window sills. Fresh rosemary, thyme, dill, basil and cilantro will soon be in abundance and in all your favorite dishes. In walks Mom: if you know me personally, you know I come from a family full of talent. I’m the cook-Tim can fix anything-Samantha is the DIYer and Mom has the green thumb. Let the lesson begin. Armed with nothing more than a Wounded Goose pint glass, my green onion scraps and a pitcher of water, Mom has green onions growing in our windows. She put the scraps root down in a glass of water, stuck them in the window sills and to my surprise they’re growing fast. In a week we’ve got 3-4 inches of new onions. It’s handy and practical. I think we’ve got enough for the salad bar, our BBQ chip appetizer and plenty of loaded baked potatoes. She says celery, ginger, garlic and lemongrass are up next for growing from scraps. When you decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Wild Game night. Each week we’re serving a different Wild Game. Find the game calendar, our monthly specials and the whole menu at woundedgoose.com. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t! ---Kat Brabham, owner 740-388-0565

JUNE JUMBLE (continued): • Stephen Carlton Clark was a Cooperstown, New York, hotel owner who was looking for a way to increase tourism to a town badly hurt by the Great Depression. He came up the idea of a baseball museum to house baseballrelated artifacts and exhibits, and to honor the game’s exceptional players. The Baseball Hall of Fame opened in June of 1939, and five of the game’s greats were elected to the Hall – Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. Twenty more were selected after the initial five, and were inducted at the Grand Opening. In order to be considered for election, a player must have 10 years of major league experience, and have been retired five years. To date, 310 have been elected, with four more slated to be formally inducted in July, 2015. •
In June of 1994, the eyes of millions of Americans were glued to their television sets, watching a white Ford Bronco being chased across Los Angeles. Inside the vehicle was former football hero O.J. Simpson, who was under suspicion for killing his wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman. Twenty police cars joined the chase, along with 20 helicopters, mostly from the news media. Simpson finally surrendered to police in his driveway and headed for trial the following year. Although the jury reached a verdict of not guilty in just four hours, in 1997, Simpson was found liable for punitive and compensatory damages of $40 million in a civil trial filed by the victims’ families. Simpson remained free until 2008, when he was found guilty of 12 charges related to his breaking into a Las Vegas hotel room to steal a number of his sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison.

Miniature Cars Q: I have 12 unopened boxes of Hudson Miniatures Old Timer car kits from the 1950s. Can you advise me whom I should contact for an estimate value and possible sale of these items? -- Al, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: I checked the eBay listings and found several sets, including two that seemed typical: a 1903 Rambler and 1904 Oldsmobile. They were being offered for sale for $20 each. I would think the value for your sets would be in the $20 to $35 range. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions to the rule. I suggest you contact antique and collectible dealers in your area to see if there is any interest. If not, eBay might be your best bet. *** Q: I have a Shirley Temple dish set that was given to me when I was a child. It includes a cereal bowl, pitcher and glass -- all cobalt blue glass. I would like sell the set but need to know the approximate value before I take the pieces to an antique shop. -- Eileen, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: I do not appraise items in this column. Prices vary from region to region. If I tell you, for example, that your set is worth $150 and you later discover that in your area it is valued at $300, you would not
be happy. That is why I avoid placing values on antiques and collectibles. If that is what you need, I suggest you show your set to several dealers to see what amounts they offer. The cobalt sets were made by the Hazel Atlas Glass Company and U.S. Glass Company from 1934 until 1942. The pitcher, mug and bowl were given away as premiums in boxes of Wheaties and Bisquick. Incidentally, all three pieces have been reproduced. *** Q: In one of your recent columns, you mentioned Fostoria. I have inherited several pieces, and I would like to add to my collection. Do you have any suggestions? -- Susan, Sun City West, Arizona A: The Fostoria Glass Society of American is one of the better groups for collectors and might be helpful for you. Contact is P.O. Box 826, Moundsville, WV 26041; www.fostoriaglass.org; and 304-845-9188. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. JUNE JUMBLE (continued): • The Flying Wallenda Family have been performing various daredevil stunts since 1922. Nik Wallenda, a seventh-generation member of the group made history on June 15, 2012 when he became the first to successfully walk on a tightrope over Niagara Falls from the United States into Canada, crossing at the river’s widest point. Although the family is well-known for performing feats without a safety net, Nik was required by ABC television to wear a safety hardness for this stunt, the first time in his life he was required to do so. Just one year later, in June of 2013, Nik was making history once again as he became the first aerialist to walk over the Little Colorado River Gorge in the Grand Canyon. Walking on a wire just 2 inches (5 cm) thick, Nik crossed the 1,400-foot (427m) distance, 1,500 feet (457 m) above the river, this time without a harness or safety net. Having made his professional tightrope walking debut at age 13, this daredevil now holds nine Guinness World Records for his many aerobatic stunts. • June 18, 1983 marked the first day that an American woman went into space. Flying on the space shuttle Challenger, 32-year-old astronaut Sally Ride spent six days on NASA’s seventh shuttle mission. Ride joined NASA in 1978 after achieving a bachelor’s degree in physics, another bachelor’s in English, a Master’s of Science, and a doctorate in Physics. She made history again in 1984 when she became the first American woman to travel to space a second time, another Challenger mission which lasted nine days. However, Ride wasn’t the first woman in space. That honor goes to Soviet Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who also made her historic trip in June. In 1963, she spent almost three days aboard Vostok 6 orbiting Earth 48 times.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS: TWO JUNE INVENTORS
Two famous inventions can trace their history to the month of June. Let’s examine their inventors and how these items came into use. • Christopher Sholes was a printer and newspaperman by trade, editor of the Wisconsin Enquirer in Green Bay during the 1840s. He was also involved in politics as a state senator and assemblyman, and served as a Milwaukee postmaster and a commissioner of public works. • In 1866, Sholes and a fellow printer, Samuel Soule, patented a paging and numbering device that automatically numbered the pages of a book. When they showed this invention to another local amateur inventor, Carlos Glidden, Glidden wondered if the machine couldn’t be adapted to produce words and letters in addition to the numbers. Although another inventor had come up with a typewriter around that time, it was very difficult and complicated to use. Sholes, Soule, and Glidden were granted a patent for their “typewriter” in 1868, and this invention was the first typewriter to become commercially successful. • The team continued to make improvements to their machine, with Sholes developing the common keyboard layout still in use today, the QWERTY keyboard. He ordered the letters in this manner so that typists would experience less typewriter jams. Sholes also developed the shift key for upper case letters, his final improvement before he sold the copyright to the Remington Arms Company for $12,000. • In June of 1890, the U.S. Census Bureau started using an automatic tabulating machine to count census returns. It was the brainstorm of a young engineer named Herman Hollerith whose inventions were the foundation of our modern information processing.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 JUNE INVENTORS (continued): • Ten years prior, as a recent college graduate, Hollerith had worked as a statistician on the 1880 census, and realized the need for a better way to tabulate data than hand-counting. He worked on his idea for the next seven years, the same amount of time it took to manually count the 1880 census. • Hollerith used the idea of punch cards that would count based on the location of the holes on each card. After several trials with paper tape, he switched to 3” x 7” (7.6 x 17.8 cm) cards, with each card holding all of one person’s data, and designed a tabulator and sorter to register the results. • Hollerith’s design was so successful that he won a contract from the Census Bureau for the 1890 census. His invention reduced the time required for the count to two years and saved the taxpayers $5 million. It was adopted by Russia, Austria, Canada, France, and Norway for their censuses as well. The 1900 U.S. Census was also counted with Hollerith’s tabulator. His continued improvements added an automatic card-feed mechanism and the first key punch. • In 1906, Hollerith created a model that included a wiring panel that enabled the machine to perform several different jobs with one machine. His 1890 tabulator was wired to work only on 1890 census cards. • In 1911, at age 51, Hollerith sold his Tabulating Machine Company for $2,312,000. His company later evolved into the International Business Machines Corporation, better known as IBM.

• Many of today’s music lovers have no idea what an “LP” is, choosing to download their music onto iPods and other electronic devices. In June of 1948, Columbia Records unveiled a 12-inch (30.5-cm) vinyl disc with 17 minutes of music on each side, revolving 33 1/3 times per minute. Up until that time, the “78” was the trend for phonograph records, revolving 78 times per minute and containing just one song per side. The first public demonstration of the Long-Playing record took place at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, a recording of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It would seem that LP’s would have instantly replaced the old “78”s in popularity, but four years later, “78”s still accounted for half of all record sales. • On June 6, 1946, a group of major arena owners met at New York City’s Commodore Hotel to discuss the formation of a league of professional basketball teams. They decided on 11 cities that would have a pro franchise – Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, New York, Toronto, Washington, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, and Cleveland. They named the league the Basketball Association of America, but three years later the name was changed to the National Basketball Association. Today there are 30 teams in six divisions in the NBA. • On June 6, 1944, in the midst of World War II, Allied forces crossed the English Channel, landing on the beaches of Normandy, France. On the orders of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, 6,000 vessels with 176,000 soldiers aboard departed England on a mission to liberate Western Europe from Nazi control. Overhead, 822 planes had dropped 18,000 parachutists early that morning. Codenamed Operation Neptune, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history.

For Advertising Call (740) 441-7633 MORE JUNE EVENTS (continued): • Remember when boxer Mike Tyson bit off opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear? That match took place on June 28, 1997 in the third round of the pair’s heavyweight match. It was two years after Tyson had been released from a federal penitentiary after serving three years on a rape charge. After Tyson regained his heavyweight title, the bout with Holyfield was scheduled. Holyfield easily won the first two rounds, which riled Tyson greatly. In the third round, Tyson spit out his mouthpiece, bit off a chunk of Holyfield’s right ear and spit it out onto the mat. Amazingly, Tyson was only given a two-point deduction, a physician declared Holyfield could continue, and the fight went on! With any sense of composure completely gone, Tyson then went after Holyfield’s other ear, biting an even bigger piece. The fight was called off, and Tyson was disqualified, fined $3 million (out of his $30 million purse) and suspended for 16 months from boxing. • Primarily celebrated in Texas, June 19 is known as Juneteenth, also referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. Even though President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January, 1863, the act had little impact in Texas because of the small number of Union troops stationed there to enforce Lincoln’s order. Once General Robert E. Lee surrendered in April, 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston that June, bearing tidings that the war was over and all slaves were free.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband had a severe case of shingles in October 2013. He still has pain. He was given Lyrica. Sometimes it helps, but his memory is affected. I’m leery about giving it to him. I’ve been giving him ibuprofen, which helps sometimes. Can you give me any advice? -- R.C. ANSWER: Many medicines are used to treat post-herpetic neuralgia, the pain that often follows shingles. This pain can be very severe and tends to be more prolonged the older you are. Pregabalin (Lyrica) is an effective medication for many people, but changes in memory certainly could be a side effect. I would be leery of giving it, too. There are several other classes of medication he can try. If his doctor is uncomfortable trying something else, a neurologist or pain specialist can help. Sometimes, small doses of several medications work better than higher doses of just one. Giving the shingles vaccine does not help once you have post-herpetic neuralgia, but it can prevent many cases, and most people who could benefit from the vaccine haven’t had it. Shingles questions are among the most frequently asked. The booklet on the shingles virus answers many of them. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been using MSG on my food as a flavor enhancement about all of my life. Some of my health-conscious friends say that using MSG is like putting “rat poison” on your food. I respond by saying putting salt on your food is worse than putting MSG on it. Does MSG deserve its bad reputation? -- K.T. ANSWER: Some people have a sensitivity to monosodium glutamate, an amino acid normally present in food that is used as a flavor enhancer. Symptoms can include headache, muscle aches, nausea and other symptoms. It is particularly wellabsorbed in liquid form, such as soups, especially those in Asian restaurants. If you don’t have a sensitivity to MSG, it is a very safe food additive. It does have some sodium, but in the usual amounts used, does not deserve its reputation. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You mentioned a treatment for ureter cancer called BCG. I would appreciate more information on this treatment. -- M.T. ANSWER: The ureters are the tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder. They are lined with the same kinds of cells as the bladder itself. So, ureteral cancer acts in many ways like bladder cancer. Often, multiple cancers are diagnosed at the same time. Surgery is the standard treatment for ureteral cancer, and the only way for a cure. Bacille CalmetteGuerin (BCG) is a weakened tuberculosis bacteria that is used for some cases of bladder and ureteral carcinoma-in-situ, an early, non-invasive form of precancer. It can be very effective, but is not intended to be a curative treatment for invasive cancer. I mentioned it for a 90-year-old man who didn’t want surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. * “Place a bit of clear tape over the spot where you are going to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from cracking drywall. It will go right in. Also, if you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking it. This does the same thing -- it will keep the wood from splitting. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com Beat Clutter With Cereal-Box Storage
Are your school kids’ end-of-the-year folders, projects and favorite magazines “tucked away” in a heap? Here’s a way to bring order to keepables that are drowning in piles. The loose items can be sorted and stored in recycled cereal boxes that your preteen and teenage kids have converted into handy bookshelf storage containers. So, before you toss this morning’s breakfastcereal box into the recycle bin, upcycle it into one of these attractive clutter busters. You’ll need: --14-ounce empty cereal box with lining removed (or larger, depending on the size of items to be stored) --scissors --ruler --pencil --adhesive-backed shelf paper, gift wrap or leftover wallpaper to coordinate with room decor. --spray adhesive or double-sided tape, if not using adhesive-backed paper. Here’s the fun: 1. Neatly cut off the top flaps of the box. 2. Measure and use a pencil to draw a diagonal line across the front of the box from the top left corner to a point 4 inches up from the base. Repeat on back side, drawing the line from the top right side to a point 4 inches from the base. 3. Draw a horizontal line across the side panel to connect the two diagonal lines. 4. Cut out the top portion of the box, using the lines as a guide. 5. To decorate, use the box as a pattern for marking and cutting out paper. Attach it with tape if not using adhesive-backed paper. Or, an adult should use the spray adhesive according to manufacturer’s instructions. Alternate idea: Instead of decorating the outside of the box with paper, turn the box inside out to expose the plain cardboard on the outside for a natural look. After cutting the box into a storage container as described above, carefully pull the box apart on the long side and the bottom flaps, where it was glued together by the manufacturer. Turn the cardboard inside out. Re-glue along the same seams to reconstruct the box. When dry, insert four to five brads lengthwise through the long side seam to strengthen the container and add style. Extra storage container idea: For pencils, pens, markers, scissors and a ruler, remove the label on a clean, empty aluminum can with lid removed. Use the label as a pattern, or measure the can to determine the size of decorative paper. Attach paper with glue or double-sided tape if not using adhesive backed paper. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Bourbon-Marinated Steak A sweetly spiced marinade adds flavor and tenderness to classic grilled flank steak. 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup bourbon whiskey 1/3 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce 2 flank steaks (about 1 1/2 pounds each), welltrimmed 1. Prepare marinade: In jumbo self-sealing plastic bag (2 gallons), mix 1 cup water with all ingredients except steaks. 2. Add steaks, turning to coat. Seal bag, pressing out excess air. Place bag in shallow glass baking dish and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight, turning bag occasionally. 3. Remove steaks from marinade. Discard marinade. Place steaks on grill over medium heat and cook 15 to 20 minutes for mediumrare or until of desired doneness, turning once. (Or, preheat broiler and place steaks on rack in broiling pan. Broil steaks at closest position to source of heat 15 to 20 minutes for mediumrare.) 4. Transfer steaks to a large, warm platter, let stand 10 minutes for easier slicing. To serve, cut into thin slices. Serves 12. * Each serving: About 215 calories, 27g protein, 4g carbohydrates, 9g total fat (4 g saturated), 47mg cholesterol, 235mg sodium, 0g fiber. It’s Never Over
If Yogi Berra had a “career year,” it was all of them. He loved his childhood, loved his career, loves his retirement. People love him and he loves people. Not bad for a guy from “The Hill” in St. Louis who once signed on to catch a ball and swing a bat for the Yankees for $500. He’s a man so simple, he’s complex. His real name is Lawrence, but the players called him “Yogi” because he used to sit with his arms and legs crossed while he waited to bat, like a yogi, they thought, showing pretty remarkable cultural range for ballplayers, actually. His numbers can’t be quantified, they’re baffling as they are great, but don’t take my word for it. Baseball statistician Bill James has proclaimed him the greatest catcher to ever play the game, and since I can never figure out all of his kooky algorithms, I’ll take his word for it. I do know this: In 15 seasons, he was elected to 18 All-Star games. See? Baffling. One year he didn’t make an error behind the plate. Another year he had more home runs than strikeouts. He never struck out more than 35 times in a season, and he never had more strikeouts than RBIs. One day in the minor leagues, he batted in a total of 23 runs in two games (it was a doubleheader). In his first game for the Yankees, he hit a home run. His rookie year he was almost voted the league’s MVP. He hit the first pinch-hit home run in World Series history. He is famously seen jumping into the arms of Don Larson after catching his perfect game in the World Series, and famously seen jumping all over an umpire after Jackie Robinson stole home with him behind the plate. He has 13 World Series championship rings. It’s been said that a lot of the things Yogi said, he didn’t say. One of the famous lines, “It ain’t over ‘till it’s over” was not uttered by Yogi as a Yankee, as many believe. He said that as the manager of the New York Mets, whom he managed during the early Ô70s, guiding their improbable run to the 1972 World Series. Yogi started as a manager for the Yankees during the early 1960s, and he was fired when he had an altercation of some sort with a player over a harmonica. In the Ô80s, he was shafted by George Steinbrenner in the most ugly way imaginable, after only 16 games, after receiving George’s “word” that he wouldn’t be fired. But a lot of time has passed, and it only seems like yesterday that Yogi was bouncing around the field, coaching Jorge Posada during spring training in his 70s. He’s just turned 90, and most everyone of his era, and his beloved wife, Carmine, have moved on to the big ball orchard in the sky. Still, Yogi can be found on the sideline during special occasions, hat off, as the names of the dearly departed flash on the screen, saying what everyone couldn’t say more or less perfectly: “I hope I never see my name up there.” We three, Yogi. Grocery Savings Many of us on a fixed income have problems affording groceries. The National Institute on Aging has some helpful tips on how to save on your bill. * Read the weekly sales flyers and try to plan your menu around what’s featured. Pick up a few extras, but only if they are sale items you’d normally buy or will use before the expiration date. * Clip coupons and use them. Try store brands -- it might surprise you that they’re comparable to name brands. * Reconsider whether to buy convenience foods. Instant hot cereals, rice, entrees and soups will cost you more. * Divide bulk purchases with a neighbor, and both of you can save money. If chicken is on sale and you both take half, you’ll have enough for a few meals and can freeze the rest. You can do the same with anything that comes in large packages or that contains more than you’ll eat before it expires. * Keep an eye on unit pricing. Bigger isn’t always cheaper. * Shop for foods that are nutrient-dense: seafood and lean meats, vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Spend your money there before you buy snack foods. * Consider free or low-cost meals. Senior centers often host a monthly luncheon for a low price. If you qualify for Meals on Wheels, those can go a long way to stretching your food budget. If you qualify for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, you’ll have access to coupons that can be used at farmers’ markets for fresh fruits, vegetables and honey. Call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-6771116 for help in finding services in your area. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Filing Despite the Obstacles It used to be that a veteran could literally put a name and phone number on a piece of paper, write a line or two about wanting to file a claim, and the Department of Veterans Affairs would be responsible for getting in touch to help fill out a form. The start date began when that first correspondence was received, and the veteran had a year to finish sending the information. Now back-of-the-envelope filing is no more. As of March 2015, claims must follow a set of new requirements and be on specific forms to be considered. As a result, a second lawsuit has been filed against the VA. Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars have added their
voice to a suit filed earlier by the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, AMVETS and the National Veterans Legal Services Program. Their objection: Veterans who can’t access the online forms or who cannot fill them out not only lose benefits, but lose the start date on the claim. Best advice: Find someone to help you go online and start a file, either a VSO, your grandchild, the chaplain at your American Legion Post or your attorney’s secretary. You’ll then have a year to complete the information. Online, look for Form 21-0966, which is your Intent to File. Fill it out and send to your regional benefits office. Then you’ll need Form 21-526EZ, the form for officially filing your claim. If that’s impossible right now, call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 and say that you intend to file. They’ll have to take your initial info over the phone. You then have a year to follow up. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
