TIDBITS® GASSES UP WITH PETROLEUM by Janet Spencer

On August 27, 1859, the first productive oil well was drilled in Titusville, PA. Come along with Tidbits as we take a look at petroleum!

RECIPE:

• Take a warm planet and cover liberally with green plants, especially large tropical ferns. Allow plants to decay, and cover planet with alternate layers of rotted plants and sediment. Wait 500 million years, or until sediments harden. Depending on heat and temperature, the result will be pockets of coal, oil, or natural gas. Drill, refine, and serve. • “Petro” is Greek for stone and “oleum” is Latin for oil. Petroleum is crude oil. Crude oil is not really flammable. It’s composed of thousands of compounds, and the refinement process results in different products. First the oil is pumped into a “fractionating” column and heated. Certain components of the oil have low boiling points and are very light, so they vaporize and rise to the top where they are collected. These include propane and butane. The “middle distillates” are heavier and rise only half way up the column: gasoline, kerosene, and fuel oil. Heavy residues stay on the bottom, such as asphalt and wax. If these products are distilled again— some under pressure, some in a vacuum— they can be broken down into even more things.

BLACK GOLD IN CANADA • The first commercial oil well in Canada became operational in 1858 at Oil Springs, Ontario. James Miller Williams dug several wells between 1855 and 1858 before discovering a rich reserve of oil four meters below ground. He extracted 1.5 million liters of crude oil by 1860, refining much of it into kerosene lamp oil. Because William’s oil well became commercially viable a year before the oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania did, it can be considered to be the first commercial oil well in North America. Today Canada is the sixth largest oil producing country in the world. INDISPENSIBLE • You’d be surprised at how hard it is to get away from petroleum products. Your bed sheets, pajamas, and shirt may be 50% polyester, made from natural gas. Your alarm clock has a styrene case, an ethylene derivative. Soap is made from the fatty acid in paraffin, and shampoo contains propylene glycol. You have a plastic toothbrush. There are petro-products in shaving cream. Rubbing alcohol is a derivative. The morning paper was pulped using petro-detergents and printed with carbon-black, which comes from crude oil. Consider your plastic glasses, buttons on your shirt, synthetic rubber soles, and the pen in your pocket. Your vinyl kitchen floor and floor wax and ammonia. The wax on your milk carton and the plastic coffeemaker and the cellophane over your donuts. The asphalt you drive on and the antifreeze in your engine. The nylon ribbon in your typewriter. The list is practically endless: plastics, synthetic fibers, adhesives, surface coatings, drugs, pesticides, fertilizers. • There are more than 3,000 compounds that originate with crude oil. Still, only 5% of world oil consumption is used for petrochemical products. The rest is burned as fuel. We Offer Commercial & Industrial Scrap Container Service Adult Dog Forgets Its Housetraining

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My border collie mix, “Rex,” was difficult to housetrain when he was a puppy, but things smoothed out for several years. Now suddenly he’s pooping all over the house again. I scold him, he looks ashamed and whines, but then it happens again. How do a retrain an old, stubborn dog? -- Clark in Kansas City DEAR CLARK: Take Rex straight to the vet. When an adult dog that had no issues with housetraining for several years suddenly develops issues, it’s not a problem of stubbornness. Something else is going on. Incontinence is a somewhat common problem in senior dogs, as they develop various physical problems with bladder, kidneys or muscles. In adult dogs that haven’t reached their expected senior age, eliminating in the house can signal an infection or other disease. In both cases,

pets need to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Working out an appropriate treatment may take additional testing and, depending on Rex’s diagnosis, a bit of time to work out the right medications to give, if any. You’ll also need to accommodate his problem, hopefully on a temporary basis, by setting up disposable pee pads appropriate to his size in each room he frequents. A side anecdote: When my mother’s aging German shepherd became incontinent, she rolled out spare carpet strips wherever he walked or rested. These she could clean or dispose of when he had an accident. Train Rex to use the pads similar to his original housetraining outdoors. It’s important to keep up his routine as much as possible: Take him for his walks at the same time as usual and feed him at the same time (unless otherwise directed by the vet). Send your questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Welcome to Goose Tips! OPINION--I’m not quite sure where 1969 stands in history, but I know it has to rank up there as far as how improbable it truly was. Broadway Joe Namath led the underdog New York Jets to win in Super Bowl III, the first artificial heart was implanted in a human, we celebrated Neil Armstrong and the Miracle Mets. There was a certain ying and yang...it was the year that John and Yoko became a couple. This month, we will also pay homage to a little gathering held in upstate New York in 1969, Woodstock. That’s right, you’re not tripping and your math is not off. This year actually marks the 45th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. Thirty-two bands were set to perform, only one, Iron Butterfly, didn’t make the show. Joni Mitchell was asked to perform but decided to stay behind to appear on late night television. She did make up for this by writing the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hit, “Woodstock” after missing the concert to appear with Dick. Whole New York State thruway was shut down due to the massive crowd. In the crowd of 400,000 plus, there were no reported acts of violence and two births were reported; even though to this day no one has come forward claiming to be a Woodstock baby. Woodstock will, on its’ 45th anniversary, be regaled as the greatest rock’n’roll concert ever. Just 45 years after Woodstock, the Wounded Goose is celebrating its’ 5th year. We have Wild Game every Friday and now serving beer and wine...The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but out food doesn’t!

OCTANE, KNOCKING, & DIESEL • Crude oil is composed of nothing but hydrogen and carbon atoms, linked together in chains of various lengths. When you separate the petroleum into its different “chains,” you get different substances. As the chains get longer, they get heavier and they have different properties. Methane (with one carbon atom), ethane (two carbon atoms), propane (three), and butane (four) are the four lightest chains, which are all gasses with low boiling points. Octane is called octane because it has eight carbon atoms. • In a gasoline engine, gas and air are mixed together to create a vapor that is compressed by a piston, which is then ignited by a spark plug. The amount of compression is called the compression ratio of the engine. • Octane handles compression very well- you can compress it a lot and nothing happens. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine which causes damage. The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. Loweroctane gas (like “regular” 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting. 87 octane gasoline contains 87% octane and 13% other fuel. • The compression ratio of an engine determines the octane rating of the gas that must be used in the car. One way to increase the horsepower of an engine is to increase its compression ratio. So a “high-performance engine” has a higher compression ratio and requires higher-octane fuel.

DIESEL FACTS

• In a diesel engine, only air is compressed by the piston. The more that air is compressed, the hotter it becomes. Diesel fuel is injected at just the right moment of compression and combusts from the heat of the air alone– no spark plug required. Diesel fuel is heavier, denser, and less flammable than gasoline. In order to detonate it, it has to be compressed in a cylinder to a very high pressure and temperature, at which point it detonates without a spark. Because diesel is denser, it has more energy per gallon. Diesel-powered vehicles get more miles per gallon. However, diesel fuel requires a very high compression engine, which is more expensive to build. And because it relies on temperature to detonate, diesel engines traditionally have more trouble starting in cold temperatures. Diesel fuel emits far less carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other emissions that contribute to global warming. CRANKCASE OIL • In motor oils, what does the “W” stand for, such as in 10W-30? It stands for winter. The two numbers, 10 and 30, denote the viscosity of the oil, or its ability to flow. The 10 before the W designates the viscosity in the winter, while the 30 indicates the oil’s ability to flow at normal temperatures. The lower the number in front of the W, the greater the oil’s ability to flow at low temperatures. In SAE 10W 30, the SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. -FACT• About 40% of the oil we consume comes from U.S. production. The U.S. is the third largest oil-producing nation in the world, behind only Saudi Arabia and Russia. Our largest foreign oil supplier is Canada, followed by Mexico, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and Nigeria.

Getting Tough With Savings and Debt With the economy inching its way back to health, consumers are looking for ways to get out from under mountains of debt and begin saving again. Here are a few ideas, both easy and not so easy. • Call your bank and ask to automatically transfer $25 a month from your checking into your savings account. If you can swing it, make that amount $100. It’s money you’ll never see, don’t have to make decisions about, and likely won’t ever miss. • If you’ve been using credit cards for miscellaneous expenses while you’re out, grab the three most recent monthly statements and a pen. Mark off all those purchases you remember. If there are purchases you don’t

remember, that’s a warning. If the bulk of your charges are for daily purchases or lunches or dinners out, challenge yourself to not put those expenses on a credit card for a month. • Look online at americasaves.org for ideas about saving and reducing debt. (No need to sign up on The Pledge because that gives away your email address.) Don’t miss its Personal Wealth Estimator. You’ll enter your assets (financial and non-financial) and your debts (mortgage, credit cards, loans). The bottom line will give your current net worth. If you continue to Part 2, you can calculate your future net worth. That in itself can be an incentive to save. • The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (www.nfcc.org) has a program showing how to save a million dollars. You enter your goal (it doesn’t have to be a million) and when you’d like to accumulate that amount of money, your age and other information, and it will calculate how much

you need to save on a monthly basis to reach your savings goal. This is a great way to beef up your emergency savings or save for a special goal, such as a house. •While you’re on the NFCC site, look at the Cost of Credit program before you use a credit card to make a large purchase that you can’t pay off in three months. Enter your intended expense, the interest rate and your payment. The program will calculate how much interest you’ll pay until you have a zero balance. Play with the figures to see if you can shave down that interest by paying extra each month. With the economy in better shape, it IS possible to get back a feeling of financial normalcy, but it will take work. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply3@gmail. com. • Abraham Gesner was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, in 1797. When his first career as a seaman ended up with him being shipwrecked twice, he decided to pursue a career as a doctor instead. He was studying medicine in London when he also became interested in geology after becoming friends with Britain’s premier geologist Charles Lyell. • He returned to Canada and set up his practice as a physician, settling in Parrsboro because it’s an area rich in geological features. He constantly collected rock specimens and drew maps as he traveled. As his interest in geology grew, his interest in doctoring faded. • In 1836, he published a book about the geology of Nova Scotia. This led officials in New Brunswick to hire him to survey the area for coal deposits, and that job inspired him to conduct scientific experiments with coal. He discovered that when coal was placed in a beaker and heated, the resulting liquid was flammable, burning with a bright clear light. In that day and age, whale oil was the most common source of lighting. Whale oil smelled bad when burned, and you had to kill a whale to get it. Gesner’s new coal oil was superior. • Gesner named the new substance kerosene, from the Greek word ‘keros’ meaning wax. In August of 1846 he gave the first public demonstration of the preparation and use of the new lamp fuel. His audience was unaware that they were witnessing the birth of the petroleum refining industry. • In 1850, Gesner created the Kerosene Gaslight Company and began installing lighting in the streets of Halifax and other cities. By 1854, he had patented the process and expanded to the United States where he created the North American Kerosene Gas Light Company in Long Island, New York. (continued next page)

A: “Death of Superman,” or Superman No. 75, was issued in 1993 by DC Comics in several formats. If the one you have is still sealed in a black plastic bag, it is worth about $16. Other editions include platinum ($50), regular first press run ($8) and other editions ($4-$6). With comics, condition is paramount. Prices might vary a little depending on dealer and region. Q: I have a New York Yankees reserved seat ticket stub for Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech on July 4, 1939. Is there any value? -- Robert, Palm Coast, Fla. A: That historic day, 60,000 tickets were sold. One of those tickets signed by Gehrig will be auctioned in Cleveland and is expected to fetch $100,000. To determine the value of your ticket, you might want to contact Heritage Auction, one of the largest auction houses specializing in sports memorabilia. • By 1857, kerosene was being advertised throughout the United States and the British provinces and Gesner’s company prospered, allowing him a comfortable life in Brooklyn. Demand grew to where his company was barely able to keep up. Just then, the discovery of petroleum, from which kerosene could be more easily produced, solved the supply problem. • By 1859, commercial production of petroleum had begun in northwestern Pennsylvania and southern Ontario. Kerosene can be distilled from petroleum far more easily than from coal, so Gesner’s company was able to produce the product at about one-quarter of its former cost. • In 1861 he wrote his second book, “A Practical Treatise on Coal, Petroleum and Other Distilled Oils,” which became a standard reference. Eventually, Gesner’s company was absorbed into Standard Oil. • Gesner returned to Halifax, where he was appointed a Professor of Natural History at Dalhousie University. His collection of specimens comprise the second oldest geological survey collection in the British Empire. His private museum formed the basis of the prestigious New Brunswick Museum. His other inventions include one of the first effective wood preservatives, a process of asphalt paving for highways, briquettes made from compressed coal dust, and a machine for insulating electric wire. • Today kerosene is commonly used as a cooking and lighting fuel, and it’s also used in jet engines. The Amish, who do not use electricity, depend on it for lighting. • Gesner died in Halifax in 1864, after seeing his invention cause a precipitous decline in the whaling industry. Imperial Oil provided a tribute at his grave in Halifax, for he did “give the world a better light.”

the 1970s. One promoted our country’s 200th year. Are they worth keeping? -- MaryAnne, Broken Arrow, Okla. A: Only you can determine if your plates are worth keeping. Most calendar plates from the 1960s and ‘70s that I have seen in shops and at antique malls have been priced in the $10 to $25 range. There are always exceptions. World War II-era patriotic plates seem to be especially collectible and are priced accordingly. A “Win the War” design from about 1943 recently sold for $75. Q: I have a print of Claude Monet’s “Woman Seated Under the Willows” from the Dale Collection at the National Gallery of Art. It is lovely, but I doubt that it has much value except in the beauty. -- Dorothy, Warrick, R.I. A: Your print likely was originally sold in the gift shop at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. It would have limited value to a collector, but my advice is to keep and enjoy it. The beauty of Monet’s artwork is, at least in my opinion, truly priceless. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. PROUDLY MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WITH AMERICAN MADE STEEL

PETROLEUM BY-PRODUCTS The first U.S. oil well was drilled near Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859. At that time, a man named Robert Chesebrough was the owner of a kerosene business which had boomed after the invention of the kerosene lamp five years earlier. With the sudden oil boom, he traveled to Pennsylvania to get into the petroleum business. While questioning the drill workers, he found that they were annoyed by problems with a waxy residue that stuck to their drilling rods, gumming them up. They scraped it off and threw it away. Chesebrough returned home to Brooklyn with some of it and spent months experimenting with it: extracting, purifying, and testing. Soon he had a colorless, odorless oily substance, in a day and age when the only oils available were animal and vegetable oils that spoiled easily and smelled terrible. He went on the road with this product, selling it for a penny an ounce. Doctors used it to hasten healing; housewives used it to remove stains from furniture; farm hands used it to revitalize dried leather goods; farmers used it to prevent rust on machinery; painters used it to prevent paint splatters from sticking to floors; and druggists used it as a base for creams and cosmetics. Soon Chesebrough had transformed a gummy waste product into a million-dollar industry, and the product is still found in every drugstore and supermarket today. Chesebrough named the product after the German word for ‘water’ and the Greek word for ‘oil’. What is the product called? (answer at top of next page) NIFTY NYLON Nylon was patented in 1937. Nylon is made from coal, petroleum, natural gas, air, and water. It is an excellent material because it does not mildew, decay, or absorb moisture like other fabrics, and it is not harmed by oil and grease or household cleansers.

WATER DISPLACING OIL

• In 1953 Norm Larson and two other researchers were searching for a substance to prevent rust on missiles. They needed to find a formula that would displace water, preventing it from sitting on metal surfaces. They tried many formulas before hitting upon formula #40. This concoction of petroleum-based mineral spirits and mineral oil repelled water, preventing corrosion. The product was named for its water-displacing abilities and for the fact that it was the 40th attempt. • When workers building missiles began using it, they found it so useful that they began taking it home, where they found more uses for it. It stops hinges from squeaking, loosens frozen nuts and bolts, keeps snow from sticking to snow shovels, and even removes crayon marks and tar splatters from surfaces. • By 1958 the product came in an aerosol can, and it was marketed to mechanics and hardware stores nationwide. The company got a boost in 1961 when Hurricane Carla wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast; the product was used extensively to recondition flooded cars and prevent rust on metal equipment. • Today there are more than 2,000 ways to use it. Norm Larson sold his share of the company for a pittance and never got rich off his invention, but it is now found in an estimated four out of every five American homes. What’s it called? Answer at bottom of page. QUOTE “My grandfather rode a camel, my father rode a camel, I drive a Mercedes, my son drives a Land Rover, his son will drive a Land Rover, but his son will ride a camel.” -Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and Emir of Dubai, on his concern over peak oil. Answer: WD-40, for ‘water displacement formula #40.’

By Keith Roach, M. D, Ear Twitch Won’t Affect Hearing DEAR DR. ROACH: For the past eight months, I have had a twitch in the inside of my right ear. I can hear it twitching, and I can feel it. It seems to get worse when I talk on the phone (it’s my phone ear), but sometimes I wake up with it twitching. It feels like when your eye twitches, only it’s inside my ear. I could liken the movement to a snapping of fingers. It’s more a vibration than a crunch. I do hear a sound when it happens, similar to when you get water plugging up your ear. So it plugs/unplugs with each twitch. I have gone to my general practitioner for help. He referred me to an ear specialist. They did a hearing test, which I passed with flying colors. Other than that, they didn’t have any solution to my problem. It is very bothersome and seems to be getting worse. I think it may be stress-related, but I don’t know what to do to make it stop. Can you help me? -- P.C.

L & S SALVAGE, LLC Buyers & Sellers

ANSWER: This sounds like a spasm of one of the muscles that control the tension of the eardrum, the tensor tympani and stapedius muscles. These muscles protect our ears, to some extent, from loud noises. Just like you can have a spasm or twitch in your eye muscles -- or indeed any muscle -- these muscles cause a unique sound sensation in the ear when they repeatedly twitch with high frequency. The plugging/unplugging sensation is likely the Eustachian tube, which controls the pressure in the ear, opening and closing. The bad news is that I don’t know of anything to make it stop. The good news is that it won’t affect your hearing. Very rarely, it can be a sign of a nerve or muscle disease, but it is likely a normal phenomenon that many people have but few notice and articulate it as well as you have. DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother, 88 years old, recently switched her medicine for hypertension from timed release, which she has been taking for 10 years, to one that is not timed release, because the timed release was too expensive. I’m worried. Has she compromised her health by doing this? Her cardiologist gave her the go-ahead. -- J.R. ANSWER: In my opinion, timed-release versions for high blood pressure are preferable to non-timedrelease because the level of the medication in the

blood can go up and down to a greater degree with the regular-release formulation. However, it does depend on the medication, and her cardiologist knows more than I do about her particular situation. DEAR DR. ROACH: Because of my knee replacement, I am recommended to have four amoxicillin 500-mg tablets before a dental procedure. I am concerned about taking 2,000 mg every time. Is it too much? -- C.C.H. ANSWER: Amoxicillin is a very safe medication, and a single dose of 2,000 mg is standard for people who require treatment to prevent infection. The major concern is allergy, so anyone with a documented history of reaction to penicillin-like drugs should get an alternate medication.

Old Basement Teems With Creepy-Crawlies

Q: The basement of the early-1900s home we recently purchased has sturdy stone walls and a concrete floor. There are no apparent water problems. But there are a lot more creepy-crawlies than I’d like, including spiders, beetles, ants and these horrible alien-looking things my husband says are centipedes. Short of fumigating the entire house, how can I get rid of these pests? -- Claudia H., Worcester, Mass. A: Ah, the ecology of the older basement. The alien-looking centipedes also are known as house centipedes, and while they do look like something out of a nightmare, they are voracious eaters of other bugs like beetles and spiders. Still, you don’t want to find any of those pests lurking under a pile of laundry. Ants, house centipedes and spiders all can sting or bite. The first thing you’ll want to do is find where many of these pests are entering the basement. Even if the walls and floor are structurally sound and appear dry, very small cracks or holes may have developed over the years. Ants are the easiest to track: Find one of their trails, or create a trail by placing a small amount of crumbs in a pile on an otherwise clean floor. The trail will typically lead back to the perimeter of the basement where the floor and wall meet. Mark each entry spot with tape or chalk. Next, test how bad the house centipede or beetle population may be, by setting down sticky traps in the areas you last saw these pests. Even if you just catch one, it will confirm their presence. A pest-control professional can do the most thorough job of eliminating these creatures, or you can find bug sprays specific to these pests at homeimprovement stores. But if you don’t want them coming back, you’ll need to close up entry points and reduce the amount of moisture. The basement may seem dry, but the appearance of house centipedes often signals a moisture problem. Have a contractor specializing in basements evaluate the floor and walls to find out if water is seeping in. Small cracks and gaps need to be sealed using correct mortar or cement patching material to allow for expansion and contraction. Meantime, look around the outside foundation of the house for potential water and bug magnets, like piles of leaves or old mulch, drain spouts that are pouring water directly down into the foundation rather than being extended out several feet away, or firewood stacked against the wall. These issues can be dealt with quickly and easily and can reduce both bug and water issues. HOME TIP: Store boxes and place dirty laundry containers on platforms or shelves that keep them off the ground in areas that centipedes and spiders frequent. Send your questions or home tips to ask@ thisisahammer.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

New Health-Care Bill Before Congress raced off to vacation in August, senators voted 91-3 to pass the long-awaited, $17 billion veterans emergency health-care bill. Here are a few tidbits from the bill: •Veterans will receive a Choice Card for care, but don’t get excited yet. To qualify for this card, a veteran must have served within the past five years, or already be signed up with Veterans Affairs health care. It will be more of an ID/insurance card that gives service information for eligibility. You likely won’t be able to take the card to a private doctor unless the care has been approved by the VA. • If a veteran is given a long wait time for appointments (over 30 days) or lives more than 40 miles from care, he or she will be eligible to get private sector care. That 40 miles is “straight line,” aka geodesic distance. • Veterans who were sexually assaulted will receive care. • Twenty-seven new clinics will open. • The VA will hire $5 billion worth of new healthcare providers. • Bonuses will be capped at $360 million per year. • The VA secretary will be allowed to fire senior VA executives much more quickly. When they look for incompetents to fire, I hope they aim their lasers at the VA medical center in Kentucky. A veteran collapsed at home and was transported there, where he was hooked up to life support. By the time his wife and family arrived at the hospital, staff told her that her husband was dead. They gave her a specific time of death. Distraught, she asked to see him one more time to say goodbye. What she found was a living, breathing husband with good heart rate and blood pressure who was responding to commands. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. 5-Minute Daily Run?! I wonder about some of these studies. A new one out claims that if we run five minutes a day, we’ll live a longer life. The 55,000 participants in the study (which went on for many years) ranged in age from 18 to 100. Runners had much lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, with a bonus three years tacked on to their life span. Even runners who ran approximately 51 minutes a week had this same reduced mortality. Their conclusion: Running five to 10 minutes a day results in this reduced mortality. Despite its conclusion, the research doesn’t actually say “five minutes per day.” The study also didn’t say why it has to be running. I wonder, too, about the people who participated. If they were healthy enough to run for a half hour, maybe they were already in a health category that would give them a longer life. In terms of impact on the body, I don’t understand why a five-minute run multiple times a week is as good as a half-hour run when it comes to cardiovascular strength. This is one time I’m going to give a thumbsdown on research study suggestions, at least for us, and point to another study (2011) that calls for 15 minutes a day or 90 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity ... like walking. A brisk 30-minute walk a few times a week has benefits. Or spending time on a treadmill or stationary bicycle, or swimming in a pool. Best bet: malls that open their doors early for morning walkers. That environment is warm/cool (depending on the season), has a level surface and is safer than being out on the streets. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com. While Tanega never had another hit of her own, she did pen a few for Dusty Springfield, including “No Stranger Am I.” 3. “Jonathan Livingston Seagull,” the soundtrack to the 1973 film by the same name. 4. “Margaritaville,” by Jimmy Buffet, in 1977. 5. “Working My Way Back to You,” most recently done by The Spinners in 1979. The Spinners’ version went to No. 2.
