TIDBITS® HAS THE FACTS ON

LEFTIES by Kathy Wolfe

Are you left-handed? Then August 13 is your day! In honor of Left Handers’ Day, Tidbits is studying up data on these special folks.

mm@lovemytidbits.com

Troyer Metal Roofing & Siding

Specializing in Pole Barns, Garages, & Roofs Complete Package It’s estimated that about 10% of the

● population is left-handed. But while many are considered left-handed, very few are 100% lefthanded, because they perform many tasks righthanded, such as golf or batting a ball. In contrast, the percentage of “righties” who are 100% righthanded is very high. ● People are left- or right-handed due to an unequal distribution of motor skills, and handedness is determined by which hand is more dexterous when performing tasks. Lefties use the right side of their brains, and right-handers operate in the left hemisphere. ● Infants have usually developed hand preference by six months of age. Some babies show a preference for one hand while still in the womb, which can be seen by observing which hand is predominantly held close to the mouth. Ultrasounds reveal that 90% of the unborn favor their right thumb. Research suggests that premature babies and those who have experienced trauma during gestation are more likely to be left-handed. There’s also a link to mothers who are over 40 – they are 128% more likely to have a left-handed baby than a woman in her 20s. Turn the page for more!

LEFTIES (continued): ● Left-handedness appears to be an inherited trait. Left-handed members of the British royal family include the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Prince William. But if both parents of a child are lefthanded, there is only a 26% chance that the child will be as well. ● About 1% of the world’s adults are equally skilled with both hands and are dubbed ambidextrous. Other people are awkward with both hands and are said to be ambisinister or ambilevous. ● There is no definitive answer as to why handedness exists. Many studies have been conducted in an attempt to identify characteristics shared by left-handers. Research indicates that they have unusually good visual-spatial skills. Creativity, music, perception, emotions, and spatial awareness are controlled by the right side of the brain. This makes lefties good architects, artists, mathematicians, and musicians. Consider that Albert Einstein, Mozart, Beethoven, Leonardo da Vinci, and Henry Ford were all left-handed. Four out of the five designers of the original Macintosh computer were lefties as well. ● University studies suggest there are more lefties with an IQ over 140 than righthanded people, a list that includes Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Benjamin Franklin. A study of 100,000 students taking the SAT test revealed that 20% of the top-scoring group were lefties, twice the rate of left-handedness in the general population. ● There also seems to be a connection with athletic ability. About half of fencers are lefthanded. Tennis greats Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, and Rod Laver are lefties, and we can’t deny the talent of baseball southpaws Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Reggie Jackson.

Include Your Pets in Emergency Plans DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We're moving into the height of hurricane season in the Southeast, and I'm wondering if you can remind readers to include their pets in emergency planning? Thanks. -- Dwayne W., West Palm Beach, Fla. DEAR DWAYNE: You've got it! Florida residents are encouraged to create a "hurricane kit" before the season starts. This is an easy-to-load collection of items that they can grab quickly if they are evacuated from their homes. Items include copies of important personal documents (like home deeds and insurance), contact numbers and other hard-to-replace records. Extra medications, blankets, spare clothing, diapers, a small amount of nonperishable food and so on also are recommended. The truth is, everyone should have a version of this kit in their home, regardless of its location, because natural disasters can strike anywhere. And along with the family

documents, pet owners should have copies of their pets' shot records, extra pet medications and nonperishable pet food. A spare collar and leash -- with ID tags attached -- flea and tick preventative and heartworm medication, as well as the veterinarian's phone number should be included, too. And have a secure pet carrier for each pet -- many evacuation shelters will not allow your pet unless it is in a carrier. If you'd like more disaster preparedness tips, check my site, PawsCorner.com. In addition, Petfinder.com has a page filled with tips for summertime safety and disaster preparedness information. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Welcome to Goose Tips! Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but who has time for a healthy breakfast, especially when mornings are often hectic? Feeding schoolage kids a quick and healthy breakfast can be particularly challenging, but it’s not impossible. Whether you can pull off a sitdown meal, or need breakfast on the go, you’ve got to make time for breakfast. Studies show that a meal packed with “brain foods” (healthy nutrients such as protein, vitamin B, and omega-3) will aid concentration, memory, and brain development, and can lessen mood swings and boost energy levels, too. Breakfast is an excellent opportunity for everyone’s school-bound kids and adults heading to the workplace to take in these foods. One of the most portable proteins is a hard-cooked egg, but it has no fiber or carbohydrates. So to get those, slice the egg then roll it in an 8 inch whole-wheat tortilla with a piece of Canadian bacon or lean ham and slice of cheese. Add a tablespoon of salsa for a shot of flavor and a smidgen of vitamin C. When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different wild game! Hungry for more? Find this, and other great tips on our Facebook page. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t. ---Kat Brabham, owner 740-388-0565

LEFTIES (continued): ● But all is not easy for left-handed folks. Because the left hemisphere of the brain controls speech, language, and writing, lefties controlled by the right side of the brain are more likely to be dyslexic, stutter, and have autism. They also process emotions differently than righties and are more prone to negative emotions, such as anger. In the physical realm, lefties seem to have more allergies, migraines, and insomnia. And since the right side of the brain has a lower tolerance for alcohol, left-handed people are more likely to become alcoholics. ● Being left-handed has had negative connotations for centuries. In the 17th century, lefties were thought to be witches and warlocks, and black magic is often referred to as the “left-hand path.” But Incas believed that lefthanders possessed magical abilities and could perform healing. If you receive a “left-handed compliment,” it is deemed unflattering. The Bible mentions the right hand 100 times, all in a positive light, while the left hand is mentioned 25 times, all negatively. The English language even derives the word “sinister,” which means threatening or menacing, from the Latin word sinistra, which can mean either “left” or “unlucky.” ● Even folklore seems to paint lefties in a bad light. If your right palm itches, legend has it that you’ll be coming into some money, but if the left one itches, you’ll be paying money out. A twitch in your right eye means you’ll soon be seeing a friend, while a twitching left eye denotes an enemy on the way. A ringing in your right ear says someone is praising you, while a ringing left ear means someone is cursing you. Going on a trip in the near future? An itching right foot promises a pleasant journey, but if your left foot itches, the trip is going to be a bad one.

● On Aug. 13, 1878, Kate Bionda, a restaurant owner, dies of yellow fever in Memphis, Tenn., after a man who had escaped a quarantined steamboat visited her restaurant. The disease spread rapidly, and by October, 20,000 people in the Southeast had died. ● On Aug. 15, 1930, President Herbert Hoover gives a press conference in which he offers plans for relief of individuals and businesses affected by a series of devastating droughts. Though criticized later for not doing enough overall, he asked the War Department to provide artillery-range land to Montana cattle and sheep farmers for grazing. ● On Aug. 18, 1941, Adolf Hitler orders that the systematic murder of the mentally ill and handicapped be brought to an end because of protests within Germany. But 50,000 people had already fallen victim to it. It would be revived in occupied Poland. ● On Aug. 16, 1958, Madonna Louise Ciccone, the entertainment icon later known around the world by her first name only, is born near Detroit. The provocative performer, who often tackled sexual and religious themes in her work, also became famous for her everchanging hairstyles and fashion sense, as well as her personal life. ● On Aug. 12, 1964, Charlie Wilson, part of the gang who pulled off the 1963 Great Train Robbery, one of the biggest heists of its kind, escapes from Winson Green Prison in Birmingham, England. Several men broke into the maximum-security facility to free Wilson, who was finally recaptured in Canada in 1968. ● On Aug. 14, 1971, St. Louis Cardinals ace Bob Gibson throws the first no-hitter of his storied career. GibsonÕs heroics helped his team sail to an 11-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1964 Gibson won his first World Series Most Valuable Player Award. He retired after the 1975 season. ● On Aug. 17, 1993, Random House agrees to pay Gen. Colin Powell an advance of about $6 million for the rights to his autobiography, "My American Journey." It became the fastest-selling book in Random House history.

● It was George Bernard Shaw who made the following observation: "The longer I live the more I see that I am never wrong about anything, and that all the pains that I have so humbly taken to verify my notions have only wasted my time." ● Modern dietary trends notwithstanding, raw vegetables have not always enjoyed the healthsome reputation they now have. ● Those who keep track of such things say that the Rolling Stones' song "Satisfaction" is played on the radio in the U.S. more than 300 times every day. ● One of the most notorious magic tricks performed by professionals is catching a bullet in the mouth. It's said to be cursed, due to the fact that, over the past 400 or so years, at least 15 magicians have died in the attempt. Some of them mistakenly used live rounds instead of blanks, and one jealous wife swapped out the blanks for live rounds. One of the earliest attempters of the trick was beaten to death by a mob who believed he was in league with the devil. Cursed, though? If someone is trying to catch a bullet in the mouth, it hardly requires a curse to result in a violent end. ● Portland, Ore., could just as easily have been named Boston, Oregon. The two men who named the town couldn't decide which city back east should be the namesake, so they flipped a coin. Portland came up the winner. ● Originally, the best man was supposed to serve as a sort of armed guard, in case the bride needed to be kidnapped from her disapproving parents. *** Thought for the Day: "Every American carries in his bloodstream the heritage of the malcontent and the dreamer." -- Dorothy Fuldheim

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 LEFTIES (continued): ● Further superstitions say that if your left foot hits the floor first when you get out of bed, you’ll have a bad day. And be careful at wedding receptions! Some swear that giving a toast with your left hand is the same as placing a curse on the people you’re toasting! ● The world seems to be built for righthanders. Power tools and machinery are generally manufactured with a leaning toward right-handed users. The emergency on/off switch is usually placed in a location convenient to righties. Scissors and a computer mouse are designed with the right-hander in mind. How many school desks are built for left-handers? Pick up a coffee mug with a novelty design on it, and you’ll see that the picture is placed for a right-handed pick-up. Those items specifically designed for lefties frequently cost more. On the bright side, some scientists believe that lefthanders are more independent because they’ve had to adapt to a world built largely for righties. ● Four out of the seven most recent U.S. Presidents have been left-handed – Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford. Ronald Reagan was ambidextrous, but he was not the first president with this characteristic. The 20th president, James Garfield, was not only ambidextrous, he frequently entertained his friends by writing Greek with his left hand while writing Latin with his right. ● There is one community in America where everyone is left-handed. Left Hand, West Virginia, population 390, can legitimately call all its residents “Left Handers.”

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD: LEFTY LADIES In keeping with this week’s left-handed theme, here are facts about some famous left-handed ladies who’ve made their mark in history. ● In 1954, this lovely Swedish-born actress was named “the most beautiful woman that ever lived.” Born Greta Gustafson, she achieved Hollywood fame under the name of Greta Garbo. Between 1922 and 1941, Garbo starred in 28 films, receiving four Best Actress Oscar nominations. During the 1930s, she was one of the highest-paid women in America. Yet at age 35, she walked away from the fame and retired to a very private life, avoiding all publicity. Garbo is frequently linked with the phrase “I vant to be alone,” one of her lines from the 1932 movie Grand Hotel. And so it seemed, since she made no public appearances and lived alone quietly in Manhattan, never marrying, until her death at age 85. ● Another left-handed American actress, Betty Grable, made her acting debut at the age of 12 in a 1929 film. At age 30 she was the highestpaid woman in the country, earning $300,000 a year. Grable was 20th Century Fox’s top moneymaker and the most popular box office draw in the country, and made more than 60 films over the course of her career. Famous as having “the most beautiful legs in Hollywood,” her legs were insured by the studio with Lloyds of London for $1 million. She was quoted as saying, “There are two reasons why I am successful in show business and I am standing on both of them.” Her famous bathing suit poster during World War II is included in LIFE magazine’s list of “100 Photos that Changed the World.”

(Her left-handed great-greatgranddaughter Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne over 61 years.) When Victoria was born in 1819, she was fifth in line of succession behind her father and his three brothers. Her father died while she was an infant, and following the death of her three uncles who had left no heirs, Victoria ascended the throne at age 18. She married her first cousin, Prince Albert at age 21 and the pair had nine children and 42 grandchildren. Her children were linked with so many European royal families, Victoria was nicknamed “the grandmother of Europe.” After 21 years of marriage, Albert was struck down with typhoid fever and died at age 42. Victoria sank into despair and never overcame her grief, wearing black for the remainder of her life. She was the first British monarch to live in Buckingham Palace and the first to ride a train. Victoria survived eight assassination attempts on her life during her reign. A devoted writer, she filled 122 journals during her adult life. ● Leftie Olympic figure skater Dorothy Hamill got her start taking once-a-week group lessons at age 8. Over the next several years, Dorothy’s father spent close to $20,000 a year on the expenses involved in training an Olympic medalist. Dorothy nabbed the gold medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, and instantly became “America’s Sweetheart,” setting a new fashion trend with her bobbed hairstyle. She is also credited with the invention of a figure skating move that became known as the “Hamill Camel,” a camel spin that turns into a sit spin.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com THANKS A BILLION! We hear the word billion tossed around a lot, but have you ever thought about how much that really is? Here’s a little perspective on this number along with some facts on those who are worth a billion. ● One billion is written as 1,000,000,000 and is equal to one thousand million. So how much is that? One billion seconds is just shy of 32 years, and one billion minutes is about 1,900 years. A billion hours ago was about 114,000 years in the past. If you want to count from one to one billion, notch out 95 years to accomplish that task. If you were to travel a billion inches, you could go more than halfway around the world, about 15,783 miles (25,400 km). ● Over 1.06 billion people use Facebook regularly every month, and about that same amount are viewing YouTube. ● According to Forbes magazine, 1,426 people in the world are billionaires, with a combined net worth of $5.4 trillion. The United States has the most billionaires (442), followed by Asia-Pacific with 386 and Europe with 366. Carlos Slim Helú, a Mexican businessman, investor, and philanthropist, has been the richest man in the world since 2010. He amassed his $73 billion fortune in the fields of communication, technology, retail, and finance. Microsoft magnate Bill Gates isn’t far behind with $67 billion. ● Although U.S. businessman Warren Buffett fell to the #4 spot on the billionaire list this year, he still managed to add $9.5 billion to his fortune over the course of a year. This chairman of Berkshire Hathaway was a millionaire at age 32 and a billionaire at 60. Buffett has pledge to give away 99% of his fortune to worthy causes. In the meantime, he spends 12 hours a week doing something he dearly loves – playing bridge. ● Brazilian mining and oil magnate Eike Batista still ranked #7 on the billionaires’ list, even though his wealth dropped by $19.4 billion this past year. How much is that? About $50 million a day!

1 1/2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 3/4 cup shredded reduced-fat mozzarella cheese

If ever there were two shining stars of the summer garden, they would most certainly be homegrown tomatoes and sweet corn! Can you even begin to imagine an August garden or a farmers market without juicy, "vineripened" tomatoes or "just picked from the field" corn? Enjoy!

1. In a large skillet, saute onion in Italian dressing for about 5 minutes or just until tender. Add corn. Mix well to combine. Continue cooking for 5 minutes or until corn is tender, stirring often. 2. Stir in tomatoes, parsley and black pepper. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes. 3. When serving, place hot corn mixture on a plate and sprinkle 3 tablespoons mozzarella cheese over top. Serve at once. Makes 4 (3/4 cup) servings.

Why Does Eating Cause Runny Nose? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My nose drains so badly when eating that I have to blow it twice before I finish the meal. It's especially disturbing if I eat something warm or steaming. I was given a nasal spray, but it hasn't worked as well as I would like. -- S.I. ANSWER: Your condition has a name: gustatory rhinorrhea -- a runny nose upon eating. Physically hot foods or spicy foods often trigger it. The spray you mentioned often works well. Astelin nasal spray is an antihistamine that is used before eating that sometimes can control the dripping. So can Flonase intranasal spray, a cortisone product. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, and I took antibiotics for a couple of months. I went back to the doctor and tested negative on two occasions, but I still had symptoms of an infection. I have been on an antibiotic, once a day, ever since. I am completely at a loss to know what to do next. Can you offer any suggestions? -- J.T. ANSWER: It's not normal to stay on antibiotics for as lengthy a time as you have been on them for a urinary tract infection. It's next to impossible to have a urinary tract infection if the lab cannot substantiate that there is an infection. Ask your doctor if you can go off all antibiotics and then have a microscopic exam of your urine and have the urine cultured for bacteria.

Conditions other than infection can produce symptoms similar to those of an infection -- painful and frequent urination. Interstitial cystitis is such a condition. The woman (less often a man) spends much of the day and night dashing to the bathroom to empty her bladder. She does this with urgency to avoid losing urine control. It's something that disrupts life. A specialist can view the bladder with a scope to see if there are changes of the bladder lining that are consistent with interstitial cystitis. Treatment is not with antibiotics. It's not an infection. A number of other medications are used. If you haven't gotten a definitive diagnosis soon, I'd recommend you see a urologist or a gynecological urologist. The booklet on urinary tract infections provides a summary of typical signs and symptoms and the appropriate treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I want to ask you about my thyroid. I started to take thyroid medicine for hypothyroidism in 1997 and still take it every morning. My blood tests indicate I am taking the correct dose. How long do I take this medicine? Is it safe? -- E.A. ANSWER: You take thyroid hormone because your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of it. You are hypothyroid -- low in thyroid hormone. Usually this is a lifelong condition, and taking the medicine is only supplying your body with something it needs. It's safe to take forever.

THANKS A BILLION (continued) ● Twenty-nine of the 1,426 billionaires are under 40 years old, including Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. This Harvard drop-out’s wealth is estimated at $13.3 billion. But the 29-year-old is not the world’s youngest billionaire. That honor belongs to his former Harvard roommate and Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, who is eight days younger than Zuckerberg. ● The Waltons are one of the richest families in the world, thanks to the efforts of their father Sam Walton, founder of the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart. The family still controls over 48% of the company and their six members are worth about $116 billion. Wal-Mart operates more than 10,700 retail stores in 27 countries worldwide, employing nearly 2.2 million people. About 1.4 million of those employees are in the U.S. ● One billion dollars seems like a lot of money, but how does it relate to a trillion? One billion is .001 of a trillion. So figure it would take close to 17,000 billions to equal the national debt.

Nails, screws and bolts of all sizes are mixed together, tossed on the bench when a project is complete. Every so often, the kids and I make a game of sorting and organizing it using a muffin pan. It's easy to sort by size and type!" Ð JoAnn ● "After cleaning my paintbrushes recently, I decided to hang them from the clothesline to dry. It worked great, as the bristles were nice and soft after they dried. I think it helped to hang them straight down." -- O.C. in Washington ● Before you start a painting project and head to the hardware store, determine what you might need and raid your recycling bin for containers. ● Here's a great way to get your lawn tools organized and off the floor: If you have any PVC pipe, cut some 4- or 5-inch sections and screw them into the wall, vertically, a foot or two from the floor in your garage. Slip the handle of your rake, garden hoe, broom, etc. down into the pipe, and it will stay stable against the wall. Make sure the pipe is wide enough for the handle. ● There are lots of shop, lawn and garden fluids that are not allowed in the trash. Q: My mom has a pink glass reamer in perfect condition. She has used it since the 1950s. It was made by the Hazel Atlas Company. Do you have any idea of how much it is worth? My sister and I both want it. -- Barbara, St. Louis, Mo. A: There are several sizes of this particular reamer, or juicer, but most seem to be selling in the $45 to $65 range. The rarer red glass reamer made by Fenton often sells for more than $1,000. Q: My aunt was in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II, and I have her complete uniform. She was a lieutenant, and the uniform I have was probably her dress one. Although you have mentioned military uniforms in your column before, I have never read a question from anyone with a female uniform from this war and period. I assume it also is worth keeping or selling. -- Ken, Bentonville, Ark. A: Your uniform is worth about $150, if in good condition and intact. Other uniform values include an Army Nurse Corps captain's uniform, $300; a Navy WAVE's uniform, $150; and a WAC officer's "pinks and greens," $150. Recently, I saw an Army Nurse Corps theatermade bush jacket in a military memorabilia shop priced at $300. Q: I was a great fan of Hopalong Cassidy when I was a kid, and while helping my mom clean out a storage area I found a Hoppy flashlight. What makes it unusual is that it also has a Morse Code chart on it. Does it have much value? -- Sam, Clarksville, Ark. A: According to Joe Caro's "Hopalong Cassidy Collectibles," your flashlight is worth about $550 if in its original box. About half that if without. Q: I have about 20 years of Reader's Digest magazines and wonder if they have any value. They are in excellent condition and intact. -- Susan, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: Unfortunately, magazine collectors are not interested in back issues of Reader's Digest, and most issues I've seen are priced at about a dollar a copy. My advice is to donate them to a charity.

1 lime 1/2 cup peach preserves 1 (1 1/4 pounds) pork tenderloin 2 bunches green onions 1 teaspoon olive oil 4 medium peaches, each cut in half and pitted 1. Prepare outdoor grill for cooking over medium heat. From lime, grate 1 teaspoon peel and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice. 2. Make Peach Glaze: In medium bowl, stir preserves, lime peel and juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper until blended. Spoon 1/4 cup glaze into small bowl. 3. Cut pork tenderloin crosswise in half, then cut each piece lengthwise in half. Place pork on hot grill

HANDS-ON FUN Put small containers filled with Silly Putty, play clay, Wikki Stix and other toys. Or, poke a pinwheel through the hole and watch it spin with the breeze from an open window. HOBBIES Set a ball of yarn in the cup and thread the loose end through the hole on top. Knit or crochet a small project without the yarn getting tangled or falling on the floor. Set your knitting needles or crochet hook through the hole until you're ready to resume the project. TOY BREAK Corral a few items to enjoy at a rest stop, such as a yoyo, jump-rope and jacks. Or, tape a small rubber ball or pingpong ball to one end of string. Tape the other end of string to the inside rim of the cup. Challenge each other to see how many times you can catch the ball by flipping it in the air and making it land in the cup.

POP-UP SPROUTS Back home, fill a cup with soil and plant some easy-togrow bean seeds. Watch them grow through the hole on top!

You're on vacation, and you just treated yourself to a refreshing, frothy mint-mocha ice drink with that big dollop of whipped cream on top while your kids slurped down a tall slushie cooler. So what do you do with the sturdy clear cup and that dandy, snug-fitting plastic dome top? Don't toss it into the recycling bin yet! Instead, wash it and use it for onthe-road fun. It's a perfect, handy catchall for your kids' stuff while traveling long distance by car or when running errands around town. The best part? It fits at arm's reach in the nearest cup holder, and the kids can see through the clear plastic top to know what's inside. Here are some ideas for turning a cup of joe into a cup of fun:

rack; cover and cook 5 minutes. Turn pork over; brush with glaze from medium bowl. Cover and cook 5 to 6 minutes longer or until pork is browned on the outside and still slightly pink on the inside, brushing several times with glaze remaining in medium bowl. Transfer pork to cutting board. 4. Meanwhile, toss green onions with oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper. Place green onions and peaches, cut-side down, on same grill rack; cook 3 minutes, turning green onions over once. Transfer onions to platter. Turn peaches over and brush with glaze from small bowl; cook 3 minutes longer or until browned and tender. Transfer to platter with green onions. 5. Slice pork and serve with peaches and green onions. 1. Jimmy Page wasn't the first to have a hit with a song entitled "Stairway to Heaven." Who was the first? 2. "Because the Night" first appeared on which album? 3. 1. Neil Sedaka, in 1960. 2. "Patti Smith Group," in 1978. Smith rewrote the Bruce Springsteen song when he wasn't happy with it. 3. "Handy Man." All versions of the song were hits, but Taylor's version netted him a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. 4. Talking Heads, in 1981. The song was used in the film "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" in 1986. 5. "Lipstick on Your Collar," by Connie Francis in 1959. In this very early rock 'n' roll cheating song, the lipstick on the boy's collar isn't the color his girlfriend wears, and she learns he's been "smooching" her best friend.

In June, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that 9,000 veterans would receive vouchers for housing when the VA teamed up with Housing and Urban Development to spend $60 million for Section 8 housing. Now the help will be even bigger: $300 million will put 120,000 at-risk veterans and their families into permanent housing in all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. These dollars will be in the form of grants to 319 nonprofit organizations that will assist veterans and their families through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This number is up from last year, when the same grant program helped 50,000 veterans and their families. Services available through SSVF include health care, daily living, personal financial planning, transportation, fiduciary and payee, legal, child care and housing counseling. Monies will even be available in certain cases for payments to moving companies, utilities and landlords if it helps the families gain or keep some stability. If you're a veteran who needs help providing housing for your family, call 1-877-424-3838. You might qualify for help if you're about to become homeless, or if you've just gotten into housing and need some support services to make sure you and your family can remain stable where you are. Don't wait until the last minute. Or go online to www.va.gov/homeless/ssvf.asp and click on FY 13 SSVF Providers for a complete list of the grant-recipient organizations that will run the programs. The list includes the name of each organization, as well as contact information and the geographical area each one covers. You've earned the benefits and the help. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

Find Your Village Patching Damaged Hardwood Floor Q: You recently published instructions on lifting out small dents from hardwood floors and furniture. My question is, how do you deal with larger damage, like gouges and small holes? -- Chet in NYC A: As long as the wood isn't severely damaged, such as a cracked or broken board, and just has a few gouges, small holes or large dents that won't steam out, you can patch and smooth the damaged areas. For this job you'll need fine-grit sandpaper, wood putty or wood patching compound, a putty knife and wood restorer. You also might need a hammer and a nail set (a large nail-like tool, not a bunch of nails) to tap loose nails down below the wood surface, should they need it. Clear debris and dirt away from the areas to be repaired. Check the wood for splinters or other damage, and look for nail or screw heads poking up. Use a nail set and hammer to tap the nails down below the surface. If a nail won't go or stay down, or if it sits loosely, remove it and hammer a fresh nail into the wood about a half-inch down the board edge from the old nail hole. Add that nail hole to your patch list.

Using a putty knife, fill the gouged areas, small holes and the newly created holes where you tapped down errant nails with patching compound or wood putty. Work on one spot at a time, using the putty knife to force the compound into the spot and pressing the blade down until it lies flat on the floorboard. Scrape away excess compound from the edges, feathering outward. Let the patched areas dry completely, usually at least a day. Once dry, sand each patch with fine-grit sandpaper until the compound is flush with the board surface. Sweep away the sanding debris and wipe the area with a damp, not wet, cloth. Finally, apply wood restorer to each patched area, working one at a time, until the patch blends in with the rest of the floor. HOME TIP: Hardwood floors need only sweeping, vacuuming and an occasional damp mop to clean them. For more thorough cleaning and conditioning, look for a hardwood floor cleaning solution. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, "101 Best Home Tips," is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

Do you have a built-in microwave above the stove that's hard to reach? Or small area rugs that aren't taped down? Are there parts of your home that are a bit dark? Are there times you can't get to the drugstore to pick up a prescription? In many parts of the country, "villages" are cropping up. A village is a volunteer effort that allows seniors to ask for specific changes to their homes to allow them to continue to live there. That work is done at a discount by local businesses that have been screened. Often village volunteers will do smaller household tasks, such as watering the garden or downloading a program on the senior's computer. Or maybe a senior needs a ride to the doctor or to take the cat to the vet. Sometimes the service is as simple as having someone accompany you to an event you'd like to attend. Seniors pay an annual fee to be connected to the available services, which can vary depending on the particular village. Some will include a visit by a healthcare professional to assess any safety fixes needed in the home. What they all have in common is the ability to help seniors stay at home longer. At this point, there are more than a hundred villages across the country. If you'd like to know more about it, go online to the Village to Village Network at www. vtvnetwork.org. Be sure to check the Village Map to locate a network in your area. Click on the colored icons for a popup with contact information. Some of the villages are not in the VtoV Network and operate independently. Or call the main office at (617) 299-9NET. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.
