TIDBITS® SCANS UPC CODES by Janet Spencer
On June 26, 1974, a 10-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum became the first item ever swiped across a supermarket UPC scanner. Come along with Tidbits as we scan bar codes!
IN THE BEGINNING • The invention of the UPC code began back in 1948, when the president of the Food Fair chain of grocery stores went to see the dean of Philadelphia’s Drexel Institute of Technology to beg him to instigate research on capturing product information automatically at the checkout counter. The dean said no, but the entire conversation had been overheard by a graduate student named Bernard Silver.

• Silver was intrigued and mentioned the issue to his friend Joseph Woodland, who was a graduate student and teacher at Drexel. Together the two men began to work on the project.

• Woodland, who had once worked on the Manhattan Project, had recently been working on a plan to improve Musak through renovations in sound technology. He was mulling over Silver’s product information problem while lounging on Miami Beach one day. He pulled his fingers through the sand, leaving lines. This gave him the idea to begin with Morse code and just extend the lines, so dots became skinny lines and dashes became fat lines— the first bar code. (cont’d)

• To read the code, Woodland used the same technology he’d been working with on his Musak project. The technology was originally invented for movie sound tracks: sound was printed in a light-and-dark pattern on a transparent strip along the edges of the film, read by a light, transformed to electric waveforms, converted to sound, and played by loudspeakers. Woodland and Silver filed a patent application on October 20, 1949. • In 1951 Woodland got a job with IBM where he hoped to push his invention forward. In his spare time, he and Silver built the first actual bar code scanner in the middle of Woodland’s living room. The finished product was the size of desk, wrapped in oil cloth to keep out the light, and used a 500-watt light bulb along with the same kind of photomultiplier tube used in movie sound systems, which was hooked up to an oscilloscope. When a bar code on a piece of paper was moved across a beam of light from the bulb, the beam was reflected into the tube of the sound system, which caused the signal of the oscilloscope to move, which translated what had been on the paper. It was crude, it was huge, it so terribly hot it caused the paper to catch on fire, but it worked. Their patent was granted in 1952. • IBM offered to buy the patent, but Woodland and Silver thought the offer was too low. A few weeks later, Philco met their price and purchased the patent in 1962. Philco later sold the patent rights to RCA. • Meantime, technology progressed relentlessly. By the late 1960s, lasers were common and inexpensive. Lasers used a single milli-watt helium-neon beam instead of a 500-watt incandescent bulb. Integrated circuits were invented, and suddenly a single microchip could do the work of a wall full of switches. The bars of the bar code were revised to record the numbers 0 through 9 instead of Morse code. (continued next page)

Dog-Park Dilemma
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You recently put out a notice about a new strain of dog flu that was affecting dogs in Chicago. Now I’m hearing about it everywhere. Can you update us on this virus? -- Jane in New York City DEAR JANE: This strain of flu, classified as H3N2, has now spread to at least 10 other states in the continental U.S. How concerned should dog owners be? Well, they should certainly stay alert, but it is not a cause to panic or to drastically change your dog’s daily routine. For example, some media outlets are recommending that owners stay away from dog parks. That isn’t exactly practical advice for urban dwellers, as no one knows how long this outbreak will last.
Instead, let common sense rule. If your dog is healthy, by all means take it to the dog park. Keep an eye on the other dogs, and if one seems unhealthy, don’t let your dog near it. If you have a puppy or a senior dog, you already know that they don’t have strong immune systems. So visits with strange pets or other situations where they can be exposed to illness -- not just canine flu but other infections, too -- should be off the table anyway. Monitor your pet for signs that it may be getting ill. A cough, sneezing and runny nose are typical symptoms of H3N2. Consult your vet right away if these symptoms show up, or if your dog has a fever or other symptoms like a lack of appetite, lethargy or weakness. Send your questions about pet care to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Welcome to Goose Tips!
Last week we planted fresh herbs in our window sills. Fresh rosemary, thyme, dill, basil and cilantro will soon be in abundance and in all your favorite dishes. In walks Mom: if you know me personally, you know I come from a family full of talent. I’m the cook-Tim can fix anything-Samantha is the DIYer and Mom has the green thumb. Let the lesson begin. Armed with nothing more than a Wounded Goose pint glass, my green onion scraps and a pitcher of water, Mom has green onions growing in our windows. She put the scraps root down in a glass of water, stuck them in the window sills and to my surprise they’re growing fast. In a week we’ve got 3-4 inches of new onions. It’s handy and practical. I think we’ve got enough for the salad bar, our BBQ chip appetizer and plenty of loaded baked potatoes. She says celery, ginger, garlic and lemongrass are up next for growing from scraps. When you decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Wild Game night. Each week we’re serving a different Wild Game. Find the game calendar, our monthly specials and the whole menu at woundedgoose.com. The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t! ---Kat Brabham, owner 740-388-0565

BAR CODES (cont’d) • Railroads were interested in bar codes because tracking freight cars caused an impossible tangle of paperwork. In 1969, railroads became the first industry to make widespread use of the bar code. General Trading Company of New Jersey followed suit, using bar codes to direct shipments to the right loading docks in its distribution facility. Then the General Motors plant in Michigan began to use them to monitor production. • In 1973, the Uniform Grocery Product Code set nationwide standards for the bar code and the Universal Product Code – or UPC – was born. The National Cash Register Company began building efficient scanners and introduced the first model at the 1974 convention of the Super Market Institute. • Six weeks later, on June 26, 1974 at the Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio, a jumbo package of Wrigley’s chewing gum was the first item ever scanned. It just happened to be the first item out of the shopping cart of a shopper, and it is on display at the Smithsonian Institute. • The UPC code is composed of two sets of five digits which give the manufacturer’s code first and the product code second, so that every item scanned has its own unique ID number. The identifying numerals are also printed along the bottom of the bar code for the sake of the checkers, in case the scanner is down or the bar code has been partially obscured and the item needs to be entered by hand. There’s also a single digit on the left side that identifies which type of product the item is: meat, produce, drugs, etc. And a single digit on the right acts as a “check digit.” It adds up some of the previous numbers and subtracts them from 10 to come up with the magic ‘Everything OK’ number. If someone has altered the code with a felt tip marker, the numbers don’t add up and the product is rejected. (continued next page)

Mustache Cup Q: I have a mustache cup of white ironstone trimmed in gold. I paid $45 for it. Are they collectible, and did I get a good deal? -- Jim, Topeka, Kansas A: Mustache cups were popular throughout the Victorian-era, when facial hair on men was the style. These cups had a ledge inside the rim that kept liquids away from the upper-lip hair to keep it tidy and prevent mustache wax from melting. A small opening allowed liquids to pass through. Most mustache cups I’ve seen in shops and at antique malls have been priced in the $25 to $45 range. Some of the more ornate ones sell above $45. I have had a mustache for the better part of four decades and have a small collection of the cups. I use one every morning, and it is one of my little pleasures in life. *** Q: My sister bought a piece of Pyrex from a dealer who told her it was from the 1930s. I always thought Pyrex was from the 1950s. Can you clarify this for me? -- Mike, Alamo Heights, Texas A: Pyrex was developed in 1912 to resist the heat shock that caused railway brakemen’s lanterns to
crack or break when exposed to the elements. The term Pyrex came to describe most heat-resistance glass used in the home. It was first made by the Corning Glass Works and its licensees. David J. Shotwell, author of “Glass A to Z,” points out that Pyrex is made with borax and is technically a borpsilicate glass. *** Q: I was a fan of The Beatles during the 1960s and ‘70s. I have a lunchbox with thermos made by Aladdin. I have been told it could be worth quite a bit. -- Terry, Metarie, Louisiana A: Your lunchbox was manufactured in 1965, and in reasonable condition could be worth about $500. Incidentally, The Beatles first appeared on American network television in 1964, the year before your lunchbox was made. The group disbanded in 1971. John Lennon was murdered outside his New York City home in 1980, and George Harrison died in 2001. Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney still perform. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. * It was Alice Roosevelt, prominent socialite and daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, who declared that her purpose in life was to “empty what’s full, fill what’s empty, and scratch where it itches.” * King James VI of Scotland was also, after the crowns of England and Scotland were united in 1603, King James I of England. He may have been doubly noble, but those who study such things say that his personal habits would not have been out of place in a commoner of the time period. He reportedly never bathed, claiming that baths were an unhealthy practice, and he would wear the same clothes for months on end. * Three of the first five presidents of the United States -- John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe -- died on July 4. * Fans of the long-running sitcom “Scrubs” will be familiar with the main character, Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian, and his best friend, Dr. Christopher Turk. You might not realize, though, that the actors who played those roles -- Zach Braff and Donald Faison -- also are best friends in real life. * The game of tag may seem like an innocent children’s pastime, but in some countries it has a sinister undertone. In Italy, players pretend that anyone getting tagged has caught the black plague. In Madagascar, leprosy is the contagion that is being supposedly spread by the game, while in Spain, it’s relatively harmless fleas. * Taking the stairs may be good for your cardiovascular health, but there are dangers you might not know of. In an average year, approximately 27 people are killed while using an elevator, while 1,600 die while taking the stairs. *** Thought for the Day: “Learning is what most adults will do for a living in the 21st century.” -Lewis Perelman (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Modern optical scanners use the same basic principal introduced by Woodland and Silver: a beam of light passing across the code records the light and dark spaces as electrical pulses, which are fed into a computer that can recognize the series of pulses as characters and match them to products. The information is fed to the computer, which not only knows the price of the item but also acts as an inventory system, tracking how much of any given item is still on hand, how fast it’s being sold, when it will need to be re-ordered, how many coupons have been redeemed, as well as tracking community purchasing patterns. • Bar codes are not just for pricing products. They are also used for tracking inventory on aircraft carriers; for coding blood in blood banks; for following applications in the Patent Office; for identifying people in places like hospitals, libraries, and cafeterias; for sorting baggage at airports; for marking clothing left at the dry cleaner’s; for monitoring radio-collared endangered animals; and for keeping track of logs in lumberyards. The Army uses them to identify ships. Runners in the New York City Marathon don bar codes on their vests and the computer records the order in which they cross the finish line. At the Masters Golf Tournament in Georgia, bar codes on spectator passes prevent scalping and theft of badges. NASA put bar codes on the backs of heat-resistant tiles to make sure they were installed on the correct spots of the space shuttles. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires all hazardous materials have bar codes that can be easily scanned to find out its characteristics in case there’s an accident. • Silver, who died in 1963 at the age of 38, never got to see his invention reach phenomenal proportions. But Woodland was awarded the National Medal of Technology by President Bush in 1992.

JOHN PATTERSON
• John Patterson’s coal company had a problem with employees robbing the till. There was no reliable method of making sure clerks didn’t simply help themselves to the cash that came into the store during the day. When Patterson heard about a saloonkeeper who had solved the problem by inventing a money tabulating machine, he investigated. • The machine was a crude cash register that kept a running tab of money received during the day. The saloon keeper patented it in 1879 but had sold only 19 in two years. Patterson ordered two of them sight unseen. They cost $50 each. In the next six months his previously unprofitable coal store turned a $5,000 profit because employees were no longer able to stuff money in their pockets. • Patterson was so impressed that he bought the cash register company for $6,500. He renamed the company National Cash Register, shortened to NCR. He was convinced that selling cash registers would make him rich. • He started out by mailing out 90,000 brochures to every major retailer in the Midwest. It was the nation’s first serious direct-mail campaign— and was a complete failure. Patterson discovered that the brochures had been received by the same salesclerks that were stealing cash. The brochures were destroyed before they could be seen by the business owners. • Patterson changed his strategy, next sending out fancy hand-addressed envelopes marked “highly confidential.” Inside, the store owners found a fancy invitation asking them to come to the best hotel in town for a demonstration of a fool-proof method of ending employee theft forever. Just for showing up they would receive a handsome gift (such as a nice letter opener). (continued next page)

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 JOHN PATTERSON (cont’d) • Patterson’s next move was to carefully coach all his salesmen in what was the nation’s first “canned speech.” He made sure they had their sales speech completely memorized, drilling them on questions prospective customers might ask. He instructed them how to behave towards the clients, and sent them fully prepared into the field. He also gave each salesman their own territory, which was another new innovation. Then he invented the sales convention, which was “part circus, part camp meeting, and part Chautauqua.” • Cash register sales, barely 1,000 in 1886, reached 15,000 in 1892 and 100,000 in 1910. The following year, NCR sold its millionth machine, as it became apparent that a cash register was an essential tool for retail sales. • Next he turned to improving conditions for his workers. In an era of sweatshops, his factory in Dayton, Ohio, had floor-to-ceiling windows and landscaped gardens. There were hot showers and a cafeteria serving subsidized food. Free medical care was provided. Employees were invited to take advantage of night school, a library, and lectures and concerts, which were all on company grounds and provided for free. • But Patterson had a temper as well, and was well known for firing people on a whim. One of the people he fired was Charles Kettering, who had designed many improvements in the cash register. Charles was fired for failing to demonstrate proper horsemanship in a company exhibition. Kettering went to work for the auto industry instead, where he made many astonishing discoveries. Another fired employee was Thomas Watson, who subsequently went to work transforming IBM into an industrial giant. • By the time Patterson died in 1922 at the age of 78, National Cash Register was a thriving industry. His son took over after his death and ensured that the company continued to thrive.

For QUALITY SERVICE at an AFFORDABLE PRICE, LET MIKE DO IT RIGHT!!! 740-446-7700
• In 1936 a grocer named Goldman in Oklahoma noticed that people stopped shopping as soon as their arms got full. Most shoppers brought their own hand held baskets from home. So Goldman invented a big basket on wheels so shoppers could buy more. Shoppers at first resisted using the grocery cart, feeling it made them look silly. Goldman hired women to walk around the store putting items in their carts. Goldman made a fortune selling his baskets to other stores. • A store will lose about 12% of its carts every year to theft. Each cart costs about $100. • In a typical year about 33,000 accidents involving shopping carts will be reported. • The average American makes 3.4 trips to the grocery store each week. Fridays are the most popular days for grocery shopping. Saturdays and Tuesdays tie for second place. • Women do the grocery shopping 70% of the time; men do it 17% of the time; and the rest of the time they do it together. Less than half of shoppers shop alone. • Grocery stores are designed to make the customer walk as far as possible, with basic staples placed at the far ends of the store. Studies show it’s how far the person walks in the store rather than the amount of time spent in the store that influences how much money is spent. • Whatever department is closest to the door in a grocery store will typically sell 1% more
Now at our New Location 1160 Jackson Pike Spring Valley Plaza Gallipolis, OH
merchandise than if it’s placed elsewhere in the store.
• A typical store will have over 25,000 items displayed including 243 items in the produce department alone. • The apple is the most popular produce item, followed by oranges, bananas, lettuce, potatoes, and tomatoes. (continued next page)

• Cereals high in sugar are always stored at kids’ eye level whereas nutritious brands are placed at the adult eye level. Children’s cereals have an average of 44% sugar but adult cereals have 10% sugar. A typical store has 124 cold cereals. • It was 1910 when the first premium was packed inside a cereal box. The Jungleland Funny Moving Pictures Book was put inside each box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. • The items most likely to be shoplifted from a supermarket are cigarettes, health and beauty aids, meat, seafood, and batteries. • It’s estimated that 34% of shoppers do not pay attention to food labels. • Lemon Pledge furniture polish has more lemon in it than Country Time Lemonade does. • The FDA ordered Mazola to remove the words “no cholesterol” from its label because the product had never contained cholesterol, nor does any vegetable oil contain cholesterol. • The Federal Trade Commission went up against ITT Continental in 1979 for claiming their Fresh Horizons bread contained five times the fiber as whole wheat bread. The claim was true, but the company didn’t mention the extra fiber came from wood pulp. • Sales and consumption of white bread increased every year up until 1963, when it began a slow decline. • Ever wonder why you never see Grade B eggs at the supermarket? Those are the eggs that are sent to bakeries and other factories where the less-than-perfect eggs are used as an ingredient. • When supermarkets first made the scene, one store called the Alpha Beta arranged everything in alphabetical order so that customers could find everything.

By Keith Roach, M. D,
Woman Complains of Feeling Hot DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year-old woman who usually is too hot. When I tell my doctors, they just sort of laugh it off. It is making my life miserable because if I keep the heat or air conditioning where it is comfortable for me, it is too cold for others. I hate summer and stay inside in the air conditioning. I keep the temperature in my house at 64 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and winter. I know other members of my family do not tolerate being out in the sun when it’s hot, but they aren’t plagued with being too hot otherwise. The sensation of being too warm comes and goes. I am about 40 pounds overweight, and have been for most of my life. The sensitivity has intensified as I’ve aged. I had a hysterectomy in my 30s, and I know some of my hormones were off. -- J.R. ANSWER: Heat intolerance is common and has several possible causes. The short list includes excess thyroid hormones, loss of estrogen and being overweight. The long list includes, among many others, some serious conditions, such as polycythemia vera (a blood disorder of having too many red blood cells), inflammation of blood vessels, multiple sclerosis and tumors that secrete substances that can affect blood vessels, such as carcinoid or pheochromocytoma. These are uncommon to rare diseases and usually have other symptoms, and many would likely have progressed over time. The part of your story that bothers me is that this has been bothering you for years and your doctors haven’t taken it seriously. Even if it isn’t a life-threatening condition, it’s been bothering you, and they should have at least tried to help. It’s time to have a frank discussion with your current or a new doctor and explain that you are concerned about this, that it’s affecting your life and comfort, and that you want to be taken seriously. I’m not saying your doctor needs to evaluate you for everything on the long list, but he or she does need to listen, think and explain. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it better to take Lipitor at night? Is that true for all statins? -- M.E. ANSWER: The cholesterol in our blood comes from the food we eat and also by the cholesterol our body makes. Most cholesterol synthesis happens at night. So, it’s better to take a statin at night, particularly for statins that don’t stay in the body a long time (this is referred to as a short half-life). Lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), fluvastatin (Lescol) and simvastatin (Zocor) have short half-lives, and data have shown better results with these taken at night. On the other hand, atorvastatin (Lipitor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor) have long half-lives, so it isn’t so important to take these at night. Naturally, if you are taking any statin, you should continue a careful diet as well. Taking a medication doesn’t take away the harm of a poor diet. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Schrock’s Home Furnishings, LLC Fresh Strawberry Arugula Salad
I’m obsessed with fresh strawberries right now. Sweet to the taste and brightred to the eye, this luscious berry can be tossed into just about anything to turn an ordinary meal into a celebration. Enjoy this prime strawberry season with me, and head out to a pick-your-own field or farmer’s market. En route, challenge your family to think of all the ways you can use your bountiful baskets of juicy berries. As kids shout out their favorites, such as strawberries and waffles, peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches and strawberry ice-cream cones, you’ll discover how the versatile berries can be worked into any meal of the day. Back home, learn new ways to use your bounty -- like stirring up strawberry-rhubarb jam or strawberry salsa. I like to use strawberries as a garnish, I toss them, along with fresh mint, into a chilled pitcher of water, and I’m always incorporating them in supper salads using other fresh local produce, nuts and cheese. Here is a simple salad that’s a headliner on our Father’s Day lunch menu. Young kids can prep the berries and peppery arugula while you quickly toast the pecans in a pan on the stove.

STRAWBERRY ARUGULA SALAD 1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 3/4 cup pecan halves 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 4 cups loosely packed baby arugula leaves* 1/2 cup crumbled mild feta cheese (optional) 1. Let school-age kids wash, hull, dry and halve the strawberries. Place in a bowl and toss with 1/2 tablespoon of the balsamic vinegar. Set aside for 5 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, an adult should toast the pecans in a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat. Shake the pan to avoid overscorching until the nuts are fragrant and lightly browned. Cool completely. 3. In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining vinegar, oil, salt and pepper. Add strawberries, arugula and pecans, and toss. Taste and season as needed. 4. Divide mixture on individual plates, and dot with the feta cheese, if you wish. Serves 4. *Substitute half of the arugula with fresh spinach for a milder flavor. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Here’s to the Losers There used to be a baseball player and manager named Leo Durocher. He was a tough guy -- small in size, but large and skilled in matters involving the fist -- and he had the mouth to match. They called him “The Lip,” because that’s what he was always giving people he interacted with. He was a member of the Yankees’ World Serieswinning “Murderer’s Row” and the Cardinals’ “Gashouse Gang,” and he managed “Dem Bums” out of Brooklyn and the Giants out of the Polo Grounds. He’s one of the winningest managers in baseball history, and there’s a plaque with his name on it in Cooperstown. Chances are you never heard of the guy ... but you’ve heard hiscatchphrase: “Nice guys finish last.” It has been said that Durocher made that remark in a passive, casual way and not the sneering, cutting way the phrase has often been presented over the years. Talking to one of his ballplayers, he pointed at the Giants taking batting practice, being courteous and nice to people, and he made the observation that they were in last place. “Nice guys. Finish last.” Over the years, like anyone with a catchphrase, he attempted to build off it ... how he would trip his own mother if she was rounding third in a tie ball game in order to win. Sixty ears later, Leo’s phrase remains for those who believe in winning at all costs. A guy named Connie Mack made a living out of baseball, too. Unlike Durocher, he had a pretty unremarkable career as a player. He was a nice guy who famously wore suits in the dugout as manager. He didn’t have a catchphrase, he had a “Code of Conduct” that he passed out to his players. It read as such: 1. I will always play the game to the best of my ability. 2. I will always play to win, but if I lose, I will not look for an excuse to detract from my opponent’s victory. 3. I will never take an unfair advantage in order to win. 4. I will always abide by the rules of the game -- on the diamond and in my daily life. 5. I will always conduct myself as a true sportsman -- on and off the playing field. 6. I will always strive for the good of the entire team rather than for my own glory. 7. I will never gloat in victory or pity myself in defeat. 8. I will always do my utmost to keep myself clean -- physically, mentally and morally. 9. I will always judge a teammate or an opponent as an individual, and never on the basis of race or religion. I give Connie Mack credit for stopping at nine. Also, give credit to Connie for having the guts to say those things during a time when the game was a sloppy, tobacco-spitting, drunken circus rife with segregation. Maybe Durocher was onto something though ... after all, Connie Mack lost more games than any other manager, finished last more than any other manager. Ah, but Mack also won the most games. He managed 53 years, won nine pennants and five World Series. He’s in the same Hall as the other guy. Alas, he has no catchphrase ... you decide who was wise. While many of us know the benefits of exercising and being more active, sometimes we just don’t know where to start. The National Institute on Aging has a book for us -- Exercise & Physical Activity: Your Everyday Guide -- as part of the Go4Life campaign. It even has a website at go4life. nia.nih.gov. Both the book and website are very well done, but if you have Internet access, I suggest that option. Start with Get Ready on the left side of the screen. Endurance, strength, flexibility and balance are explained, with activity suggestions for each one. If you love websites with Quick Tips to break up the text or lots of places to click to get more information, this site is for you. The next chapter -- Get Set -- talks about using the activity log that’s provided, while chapter 3 -- Go! -- has suggestions I’ve never thought of for making exercise fun. (Example: Working out with cans as you put groceries away. Who knew?) Do you know how to tell when to increase the number of repetitions of an exercise? Chapter 5 -- How Am I Doing? -- tells you. If nothing else, check the 20 Frequently Asked Questions near the end of the book. The 124-page book can be downloaded from the website and printed out, or you can order it and have up to 10 copies sent to you for free. If you want even more exercise suggestions, especially if you’re just starting, don’t miss the 24-page Workout to Go publication, also available as download or to order. To order by phone, call 1-800-222-2225. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc

Some Student Vets Due Refund Checks If you were a student and had Navient (aka Sallie Mae) as your loan service provider, you might be getting a refund check in the mail. The Department of Justice nailed Navient to the tune of $60 million in refunds and penalties after 78,000 service members were overcharged on interest for student loans. It was the first lawsuit against student loan servicers, and it sends a powerful message. The loans in question date back to 2005, so even if you’re not recently out of school, you might be in the group getting compensation. Additionally, Navient must contact all three of the big credit bureaus to ask that negative credit histories be deleted if the extra charges caused default judgments. Even more, Navient had to create an online form for service members, and make sure that there are customer-service reps who are
trained in veterans rights. This whole investigation apparently started with a service member complaint made through the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of Servicemember Affairs. If you think you’re due some cash from this, starting in mid-June 2015, you can call 855-382-6421. For other topics where your veteran rights were ignored, look at legalassistance. law.af.mil for Legal Loan CompanyServices Locator or see www. servicemembers.gov. If you want to read about other problems the DOJ is tackling to help veterans, see www.justice. gov/crt/spec_topics/military. Example: A storage company auctioned off a veteran’s belongings (including rare car parts) while he was overseas, clearly against the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Example: A company illegally repossessed vehicles belonging to over a thousand veterans. Example: Some 900 veterans had their homes illegally repossessed. That link is a page to keep an eye on.
