TIDBITS® WEARS SHOES
Troyer Metal Roofing & Siding
by Janet Spencer
On July 5, 1858, the first shoe manufacturing machine was patented in Massachusetts. Come along with Tidbits as we wear shoes!
IN THE BEGINNING • A slipshoe was an old word for a slipper, comfortable footwear for use in the home. People who wore these informal slippers in public places instead of the regular shoes were said to be “slipshod.” Now it means anything done in a careless fashion.

• When horses are “rough-shod” they have shoes on which have the ends of the nails sticking out. This gives the horse more traction, but it tears up the ground the animal travels over. When someone “rides rough-shod” over another person, they are trampling the ground beneath them without caring.
115 DeckarD rD,(1/4 mile from Tycoon lake) BiDwell, oH 45614
• Wooden shoes called “sabots” were popular in days gone by because they were cheaper than leather shoes. They gave us our word “sabotage.” One story is that when workers went on strike, they would throw their “sabots” into the factory’s machinery, ruining the gears in an act of “sabotage.” Another more likely story is that because walking in wooden shoes is clunky and clumsy, and people wearing them tended to be bungling, therefore anything that was deliberately bungled up was “sabotaged.”

SHOES (cont’d) • Stiletto comes from the Italian word stilo meaning ‘dagger’ or ‘stylus.’ The contemporary stiletto was invented in the 1950s by Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo, who made his first pair for Marilyn Monroe using alligator hide. The styles back then were tame by today’s standards, with heels no taller than about 3 inches. • The word “sneaker” is often attributed to an advertising agent who, in 1917, coined the term because the rubber sole made the shoe stealthy. The name “sneakers” referred to how quiet the rubber soles were on the ground, in contrast to noisy hard leather-soled dress shoes. Someone wearing sneakers could “sneak up” on you while someone wearing standard shoes could not. • Australian fashion lore has it that Ugg really does stand for “ugly.” The sheepskin boots have been used by outdoorsy Australians for decades, but they were designed to be utilitarian rather than fashionable. • Sandals were first worn in warm climates where the soles of the feet needed protection but the top of the feet needed to be cooler. • Before the 19th century there was no left or right shoe, they were both identical. • “Schubert” and “Schumann” both mean shoemaker.

Volunteer Ideas
DEAR KARA: Check your local newspapers (or their websites) and your town’s website for volunteer opportunities. There may not be anything right now, but needs change throughout the year for many nonprofits. So, what if there really are no opportunities near you? Consider creating one. Organizing a fundraiser for a pet charity (or your local animal shelter) is one fast way to do something positive. Or, if you spot a need that isn’t being met in the local pet community, create a way to fulfill that need. For example, a military couple created “Dogs On Deployment,” a website that helps military members find temporary homes for their
pets (not just dogs) before they leave for overseas assignments. What if senior citizens in your area need help keeping their pets’ shots up to date? You could talk to local vets and perhaps the local shelter about ways to help them. Perhaps your town has no facilities for pets, such as a dog park or even pet zones in local parks. Start exploring the possibility of getting a park built. You could even start with something as small as an awareness campaign that educates store owners about the many types of service dogs (and other service animals) that are helping disabled people these days. Keep your eyes open for inventive opportunities to contribute positively to pet care, and you may find yourself overwhelmed with choices. Send your questions about pet care to ask@ pawscorner.com. Ice Cream Bread. Yes, you heard me correctly---
ICE CREAM BREAD
Seriously, you MUST stop what you are doing right now and make this. I used Butter Pecan Ice Cream because that’s my fav, but you can use whatever flavor you want. This recipe makes one 8 x 4 loaf. You need: 2 cups Ice Cream, softened 1 1/2 cups Self-Rising Flour Preheat your oven to 350. Spray and flour a 8x4 loaf pan. In a medium bowl mix the ice cream and flour together until just combined. Scoop into the loaf pan and smooth out. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick stuck in the loaf comes out with a few crumbs stuck to it. Remove from pan and allow to cool (if you can wait that long)! When you decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Wild Game night. Each week we’re serving a different Wild Game. Find the Game Calendar, our Monthly Specials and the whole menu at woundedgoose.com The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t! Kat has had so many request for this recipe we did a reprint!

MORE SHOE FACTS
• Because of stringent new environmental laws in Europe, the chemical composition of Barbie dolls changed to a softer plastic that doesn’t produce as many toxic gases when burned. To show that the new plastic was non-toxic to children who might swallow pieces of Barbie, they tied plastic Barbie shoes to tethers and fed them to pigs. The shoes were retrieved at various points in the digestive process and weighed to show that there was no absorption. • In the 1950s DuPont decided leather was no good for shoes because leather wears out. DuPont invented an imitation leather that they claimed would never wear out. They called it Corfam. Not only did Corfam never wear out, it also never broke in. Shoes would not mold themselves to fit the wearer’s foot like leather does. Instead, the shoes “wore like armor plate,” according to “Time” magazine. Corfam did not breathe like leather, resulting in hot sweaty feet, and it was also more expensive than leather. DuPont lost over a quarter million dollars on Corfam shoes.
BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW
• Some islanders used to use the skin of sea cucumbers to make shoes. • Up until the 1700s, both men and women wore high heels. • The world’s largest shoe size was 37AA worn by Robert Wadlow back in 1940. Wadlow was the tallest man in the world at 8 ft. 11 inches (2.7 meters). • The average American woman buys about five pairs of shoes each year, and the average man, about two pairs. • Cowboy boots have heels to help a rider’s feet stay in the stirrups. • The inside of a banana peel is a great shoe polisher for patent leather. • There are about a quarter million sweat glands in an average pair of feet.

Longines Wristwatch Q: My dad was a soldier during World War II, and I have inherited his Longines wristwatch. It is the Model 13 ZN stainless-steel chronograph, with silver dial and original strap. Should I have it appraised? -- Carl, Sun City, Arizona A: This exact model of Longines watch was sold by an auction house in New York earlier this year for $50,600, so my answer is yes, do have your watch appraised. In recent years, vintage and collectible timepieces have soared in value. You might want to contact the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, which has more than 15,000 members in 50 countries. Contact is www. nawcc.org, and 877-255-1849. *** Q: I spend my summers in Texas, where I have been finding incredible arrowheads. Is there a guide or reference book for this field of collecting? -- Steve, Elizabeth, New Jersey A: The ultimate guide to United States point types is “Overstreet Indian Arrowheads: Identification & Price Guide,” by Robert M. Overstreet and published by House of Collectibles books. It features more than 8,000 illustrations, up-to-date regional market reports and tips on grading. Although there are other guides, this one -- in my opinion -- is the best.
Q: I have a number of older books, and I would like to find out current values. Do you have any suggestions? -- Mona, Yucaipa, California A: One of the better sites is www.abe.com. Go to the site, type in the title and author, and you will quickly discover where that particular book is being offered for sale and for how much. Be aware that condition and edition are two very important factors when determining the value of a book. *** Q: I have a teapot made by the Harker Pottery Company and in the tulip pattern. I have been offered $50 for it. -- Connie, Galveston, Texas A: I found your teapot referenced in the “Antique Teapots Price Guide,” edited by Kyle Husfloen and published by Krause. According to Husfloen, your teapot was made in about 1940 and the design is similar to the Jewel Tea Autumn Leaf pot. It is valued at $30. Do the math. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

* It was Nora Joyce, wife to the Irish novelist James Joyce, who wrote the notoriously difficult -- and influential -- stream-of-consciousness novel “Ulysses,” who asked her husband, “Why don’t you write books people can read?” * You might be surprised to learn that contemporary model and actress Brooke Shields is descended from that notorious figure of the Italian Renaissance, Lucretia Borgia, who was suspected of such crimes as adultery, incest and murder. * In this era of helicopter parenting, some are shocked to learn that in the 1960s, nearly half of all children in America walked to and from school by themselves. * What do “Where’s Waldo,” “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” “My Friend Flicka,” “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” and “Harriet the Spy” have in common? Aside from being books meant for a young audience, all of these titles have been banned at one time or another. * There are about the same number of chickens as there are humans on the planet. * If you’re like 83 percent of pet owners who responded to a recent survey, you feel that you receive more unconditional love from your pet than from your kids, your best friend or even your romantic partner. * I’m sure you’ve heard the term “Podunk” used to describe a small, unimportant town, but you might not know where the word came from. It seems that a Native American tribe in Connecticut was known as the Podunk, and a nearby river was called by the same name. Local small towns on the river were referred to as “Podunk,” too, and so the word entered the lexicon. *** Thought for the Day: “I have lived in this world just long enough to look carefully the second time into things that I am most certain of the first time.” -Josh Billings (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Jones decided not to take the penalty for dropping the ball out of the shoe, and instead he played the shoe. He whacked it as hard as he could. The ball flew out and kept rolling, landing a few feet from the green. Jones made par. • During a 1967 soccer game in Bulgaria, the referee got down on one knee and bowed his head. Noteworthy Inventors WILLIAM SCHOLL
• William Scholl was born in LaPorte, Indiana in 1882 as one of 13 children. Even as a boy on a mid-western farm, William was interested in feet and shoes. As a teen he learned to make shoes, and then was apprenticed to a cobbler. • When he moved to Chicago to set up his own shop, he noticed how many people had trouble with corns, bunions, and fallen arches, and he was appalled. So he worked as a shoe salesman by day and put himself through medical school by night, becoming a podiatrist in 1904 at the age of 22. • That same year he patented an arch support which he peddled to other shoe salesmen, and its popularity gave him the capital he needed to invent more products for the feet, including remedies for corns, bunions, warts, calluses, foot odor, ingrown toenails, athlete’s foot, and many other foot-related ailments. • He established a correspondence course to teach basic podiatry to shoe store clerks and sent a team of trained sales representatives around the country to deliver public lectures on proper foot care. • In 1916 William Scholl sponsored the national Cinderella Foot Contest to find the most beautiful feet in the U.S. Ladies flocked to shoe stores by the thousands to have their feet measured and scrutinized, and pictures of the prize-winning feet were published in magazines and newspapers nationwide. Then the ladies flocked to drugstores by the thousands to buy Scholl’s products in order to make their feet look more beautiful. • By the time he died in Chicago in 1968, William Scholl’s line of foot care products eventually expanded to include over a thousand different items. He left the company to his nephews, and it still flourishes today.

• Born in Germany in 1900, Adolf Dassler, who went by the nickname of Adi, loved tap dancing. He began creating his own tap shoes and got a lot of advice from his father, who worked in a shoe factory, manufacturing cleats for athletes. After he returned from service during World War I, he set up a cobbler’s shop in his mother’s laundry. Adi decided to go into the dance shoe business, and his brother joined him in the venture, which they called the Dassler Brothers Shoe Company. • At the World Tap Dancing Competition in 1928, Adi outfitted a number of the top competitors, and sales of his shoes climbed. During World War II, Adi was drafted into producing boots for soldiers. • After the war, Adi and his brother split up and his brother started a sports shoe company called Puma. Adi renamed his own company, combining several letters from both his first and last names. He designed his company’s three-striped logo. He branched out and soon was making 30 different types of shoes for 11 different sports. • Much of his success was due to his close contact with the athletes who wore his shoes, and his persistent presence at sporting events. Sales skyrocketed after Germany won the World Soccer Cup in 1954 with every member of the team wearing his shoes. He got many famous athletes to use his footwear including Jesse Owens and Muhammad Ali. • Aggressive marketing was a cornerstone of his business, and he expanded into many different sporting goods. When Adi died in 1978, his son took over the business. Today the shoe company Adi founded is the second largest sportswear manufacturer in the world. Can you name it? (answer at top of next page)

• Because July is National Hot Dog Month, take a bite out of these hot dog facts! • To celebrate National Hot Dog Month, the American Meat Institute sponsors the annual Hot Dog Lunch on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Over 1,000 lawmakers, officials, and congressional staff help themselves to 4,000 hot dogs (enough to circle the Capitol dome four times) along with potato chips and Cracker Jacks while hob-nobbing with various baseball personalities. In 2001, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sponsored a vegetarian event on the same day as the Hot Dog Lunch. Playboy bunnies clad in lettuce-like bikinis served up vegetarian “not-dogs” to interested staffers. The event, billed as “Lettuce Entertain You,” offered cholesterol-free fat-free veggie dogs to about 500 people.

Fast Facts About Franks
• Every year, Americans down an estimated seven billion hot dogs. Laid end-to-end, that’s enough hot dogs to circle the equator 27 times. Two billion of them are eaten during July. • Just over 26 million hot dogs are eaten every year in major league baseball stadiums, making franks the most popular item with baseball fans. Dodger Stadium in L.A. ranks as Top Dog, selling an estimated 1.5 million Dodger Dogs each season. Cleveland’s Progressive Field comes in second with 1.1 million dogs annually. Some 15% of hot dogs eaten are purchased from street vendors and 9% are eaten at ball parks. • People in New Orleans eat more hot dogs per capita than any other city, followed by L.A., San Antonio, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, New York City, and Chicago.

• In a poll sponsored by the American Meat Institute and the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, hamburgers ranked #1 among American adults as the top food item for summertime grilling. Some 32% of people polled said they go for a burger above all else at backyard barbecues. Another 19% named hot dogs, making it the second place choice. Chicken was third, followed by steak. • In a similar poll, mustard ranked #1 as the favorite hot dog topping, with 30% of people choosing it above all other toppings. Another 22% picked ketchup, which came in second place, followed by chili and onions. Lost Dog • In June of 2002, Will Keller and Paula Pendleton were driving the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile across the country on a yearlong tour of barbecue cook-offs and charity events. In Washington, D.C., they got lost and ended up going down a road near the Pentagon that is off limits to vehicles with six or more wheels. The road was closed to truck traffic following the Sept. 11 attacks for fear someone would drive a truck bomb close to the Pentagon. The Wienermobile was quickly pulled over by troopers who expected the wurst, and the drivers of the giant hot dog were grilled. Troopers found no bomb in the back of the hot dog, which was packed with boxes of Wienerwhistles, Wienermobile Hot Wheels, Wienie bean bag toys, and a karaoke machine featuring Wiener songs. Apparently not many terrorists pick a 27-foot long bright red vehicle shaped like a hot dog to pull off a terrorist attack. When it was determined that they posed no threat to national security, the Wienermobile was released and the driver was directed to the proper road. They did not receive a ticket.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about vitamin D-3 pills. How does 400 mg fit into such a tiny pill? I also thought you needed sunlight to make vitamin D. -- A.S. ANSWER: Four hundred mg is very small. Most of the tablet isn’t even vitamin D -- it’s starch and other materials to hold the tablet together. The skin does make vitamin D-3 from precursors in the presence of sunlight. However, there are several factors that affect this process. During winter months at moderately high latitudes (above the line from Los Angeles to Atlanta), the sunlight might not be strong enough to efficiently convert enough vitamin D, so many are vitamin-D-deficient during winter. People who don’t go outside, who usually wear clothing and hats to cover their skin or who have darker skin are less able to create vitamin D. People over 70 also are less able to make their own vitamin D. This is why many foods are supplemented with vitamin D. Even so, a sizable proportion of the population has low levels of vitamin D. There remains great controversy about whether supplementation will improve overall health. Studies are ongoing to test the effect of vitamin D supplementation to reduce fracture risk, improve muscle function or reduce cancer risk. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You mentioned lupus in a recent column. Is there a connection between lupus and arthritis? -- D.J.T. ANSWER: Systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE) is a disease that can affect virtually any organ in the body, and usually affects several -- often at the same time. The most common symptoms are fatigue, fever and weight loss. Skin signs can be very specific, such as the classic “butterfly rash,” a red, butterfly-shaped rash across the nose and cheeks. Arthritis (joint inflammation) or arthralgia (joint pain) is present in 90 percent of people with lupus at some point in the illness. The arthritis booklet discusses joint pain found in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: If you walk briskly for a certain time and distance, is that not just as good for you as jogging, if you are going for the same time? -- A. ANSWER: It depends on what you mean by “good.” If you mean what I think you do, in terms of overall health and maybe living longer and feeling better, then yes, a brisk walk is nearly as good for you as jogging. Jogging probably is better for preventing osteoporosis, since it gives more impact to the bones, but on the other hand it is harder on the joints. If your goal is to get faster and win races, then you need to practice going faster. But walking is nearly as good for most aspects and is easier on the body than jogging for most people. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. * Having a yard sale? Here’s a great way to put out extra signs when you don’t have a way to stake them into the ground: “Write your sign advertising your yard sale on the sides of a big box. Place it where you want it, and add a large rock to the inside, then tape shut. We did this when we had no poles to tape signs to or any other way to get them to stand up. It worked really well!” -- D.R. in Georgia

* Avoid calling the pediatrician’s office on Monday mornings for routine business. Wait until the afternoon. All the parents with mildly sick children over the weekend will be calling to consult with the doctor and nurses first thing when the office opens. * If you drop an egg, sprinkle with salt before you attempt to clean it up. The salt binds the whites, which will not spread, making pickup easier! * “My kids had kind of an obsession with colorful Duck tape in the past year, and we made some “beach bags” to keep our electronics safe at the pool, lake and beach. We carefully covered a variety of sizes of zipper-top self-sealing bags with the tape, creating tough, colorful pouches in which we can store cellphones, etc., to keep them safe from water damage.” -- W.L. in North Carolina * You can sharpen scissors by cutting folded aluminum foil into small strips. * The best time of day to water your lawn is the evening. The cooler temperatures allow the water to sink into the soil instead of evaporating with the heat of the day. Always follow your city or county guidelines on watering times for your area. * On July 10, 1887, an 80-foot-high concrete dam breaks in Zug, Switzerland, releasing a wall of water that kills 70 people. Rescue boats were ineffective, as they capsized in the roiling waters. * On July 7, 1930, construction of the Hoover Dam begins. Over the next five years, 21,000 men would work to produce what would be the largest dam of its time, as well as one of the world’s largest manmade structures. * On July 6, 1946, FBI agents arrest George “Bugs” Moran in Kentucky. Once one of the top organized crime figures in America, Moran had been reduced to small bank robberies. His criminal career took an abrupt downturn after the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929. * On July 8, 1951, Paris celebrates its 2,000th birthday. The history of Paris can be traced back to a Gallic tribe known as the Parisii, who settled an island (known today as Ile de la Cite) in the Seine River, which runs through presentday Paris. * On July 9, 1960, President Dwight Eisenhower and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev trade verbal threats over the future of Cuba. Khrushchev fired the first shot when he warned that the Soviet Union was prepared to use its missiles to protect Cuba from U.S. intervention. * On July 11, 1978, a truck carrying 1,500 cubic feet of pressurized liquid gas crashes into a campsite crowded with vacationers in Spain. The resulting explosion killed more than 200 people. * On July 12, 1995, a heat advisory is issued in Chicago warning of a record-breaking heat wave. Fourth of July Sidewalk Parade It’s time for a sidewalk parade! Whether it’s on the Fourth of July, or anytime all summer long, decorate bikes, trikes, scooters, skates and wagons, wear a funny hat and strike up the band. A couple of families with a few motivated kids is really all it takes to make it happen. Gather kids of all ages in your neighborhood, and get marching to the beat of family fun and memory-making. Here are some ideas to stage the informal, high-spirited event: * Make and deliver fliers or send emails to announce the sidewalk parade. Designate a place where kids can gather for a pre-parade decorating party. Your deck, driveway, backyard or a local park can be the gathering spot. Tie ribbons, streamers and flags to bikes and wagons. Make signs and banners. * Put your child’s teddy bear or other stuffed animals on parade, too. Decorate the long sides of a wagon to make it look like a circus wagon. Fill it with their favorite animals. Some kids might like to dress like a clown, while others can be a circus ringmaster or tightrope walker. * Teens may enjoy participating, too. They can hand out brochures along the mini parade route or wear a sandwich board advertising their services for mowing lawns, babysitting or watering plants for vacationers. * For post-parade fun, make the day a real picnic and top off the event with snacks, appetizers, a potluck meal or a barbecue. For dessert, set out tubs of ice cream on a picnic table. Ask families to bring their favorite toppings. * Enjoy a memorable finale with a few games that everyone will enjoy, such as an egg toss, water-balloon volleyball and relay races. Some kids may want to perform impromptu juggling acts, magic shows and songs. Encourage participants to match up with new families on the block or in the building so everyone gets acquainted. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. 5.6: Persevere Power is Enhanced in Surrender By Ron Ross More often than I care to admit, I have quit. I have walked off of jobs, terminated projects, and submitted to the realities of more than one broken business model. No doubt there were times when I quit too soon; if I would have persevered another day or week or month, I may have achieved my goals. And yes, I have read all the books and heard all the lectures about how I can have more confidence, conjure up more courage, and realize more success if I persevere. They tell me to wake up earlier, think clearer, toil harder, labor longer, and of course, work smarter. Then, because of the lack of progress and the perceived likelihood of failure, I get weary, confused, and dejected – so I quit. Then what? I feel terrible. I feel like a loser, a dumbbell, a weakling, a failure. Do you want to know why I (and possibly you) feel this way when we fail? It is because we have placed all our faith in ourselves. Let me put it in the first person: When all my success is up to me and my ideas and my abilities and my strength and my talents and my gifts, then I alone am responsible for my performance and the outcome of my efforts, no matter what or why things happen, especially when I quit. But that is totally unrealistic. As a Christian, I believe that ultimately my personal success is NOT up to me. This means that even in my failures I can find meaning and purpose, lessons and guidance for whatever is next. I
believe God himself is personally concerned about who I am and why I am here. I believe the same thing for you! You were created on purpose on schedule and in a particular place to contribute something only you can supply. Neither one of us are an accident of natural evolution as some would have us believe. You and I were in the mind of God before we were in the womb of our mother. God himself is vitally interested in us fulfilling our mission. This means that when we fail, when our projects fall apart, when calamity confuses our lives that our response should not be to complain to each other and curse God, but to surrender to His will. There is a time when surrender builds more character than perseverance because it leads us to our destiny. Surrender, in its most negative application, means you admit defeat and lay down your arms never to rise again. Surrender, in its most positive application, means you yield your whole life, the good, the bad, and the ugly to the will and wisdom of God. The act of persevering when our way grows weary will strengthen our character but surrendering to God’s will proves God’s character and his promise that He will go with us “through the valley of the shadow of death.” Your ideas and abilities are not enough. Put your faith in God; He will not disappoint you. Let His Perseverance Power be demonstrated through you whether you succeed or fail. William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, said, “The greatness of the man’s power is the measure of his surrender.” Don’t quit – surrender. ©2015 Ronald D. Ross

As any watcher of sports on television can tell you, commercials are unavoidable. Not only are they pervasive, they are repetitious -sometimes, I would argue, to a fault. We understand that people need to hear a message more than once to get the point. I’m pretty sure that’s Merchandising and Advertising 101. But when is it enough? The major brands out there -- the soft drinks, phone companies and financiers -- change it up every once in a while, introducing new characters and songs. And they pretty much know when people aren’t into the ad anymore. For instance, when seeing a certain brand of luxury car reminds you of Jim Carrey imitating Matthew McConaughey’s creepy ad, you know it’s time to retire that commercial. When the only people on Twitter taking the time to type #sirloin are the people telling you they hate the commercial where they’re told to type #sirloin, it may be time for change. At one point or another, all of us have lent a hand or given to a charity of some sort. Maybe you canvassed the neighborhood for Easter Seals, threw a few extra bucks into the second collection at church, volunteered your time or work for a non-profit. We appreciate the efforts of all the non-smokers’ alliances and the antitrans-fat corps and all of the other groups out there with noble causes, spending their money on precious advertising time. The networks
thank them, too. And so do the ad firms and all the people that are in the industry. But I gotta tell ya, it’s getting to the point where you’re praying for the players to play in perpetuity because you know if they stop for any reason -- a pitching change, a technical foul, multiple penalties to sort out -- it means you’re going to have to watch the guy pop out his eyeball, tear off his legs and rip out his jaw again during the station break. As a fan, you should not have to hope that Don Mattingly blows Clayton Kershaw’s arm out because you’re afraid that if he stops pitching for even a second, it means you have to be subjected to a colonic camera view and thrust on another journey through the fat layers surrounding the liver of the guy who wanted to have a Fanta. Watching a full seven-game series or a Stanley Cup win on home ice should be exciting, but there’s a difference between the exhilaration of having witnessed a nail biter for the ages as opposed to being left a complete neurotic with borderline PTSD because of the public service announcements. Whatever happened to frying an egg and just saying no? #I’mJustSayin Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc

If you have part of your retirement money in savings bonds, the newly announced interest rates might have you in a spin. As of May, it was announced that Series I bonds will earn zero percent interest for six months, down from 1.94 percent. The Series EE bonds will see a rate of only 0.30 percent for the next 20 years. However, those are for new bond purchases only. You can breathe a little easier now. The interest rate on your existing I or EE bonds is determined by the type of bonds they are, plus the original terms. If you purchased Series EE bonds after May 2005, you’ll get a fixed interest rate for 20 years. It’s guaranteed that after 20 years, the bonds will have a value of twice the purchase price. If you purchased bonds between May 1997 and April 2005, rates are 90 percent of average five-year Treasury securities. Prior to May 1997, the rates vary. You can check www.treasurydirect.gov for current values. Series I bonds have a fixed rate plus an inflation rate, which is reset every six months, for the 30-year life of the bond. Series HH bonds have stayed the same, with interest at 1.50 percent. The good news is that you won’t lose money with bonds, although you might not get any interest for a period of time. Go online to check your actual yield. The online bond-rate calculator and wizard tool are free on the Treasury Direct website. If you need information about cashing in bonds or replacing lost ones, you can also see www. savingsbonds.com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Suicide Study Is Eye-Opener A 10-year study of suicide statistics for veterans has an eye-opening conclusion: Using the Department of Veterans Affairs health services lowers the risk of suicide. The study, appearing in Psychiatric Services Journal, looked at data from over 173,000 suicides in 23 states over the years 2000-2010. Here are some stats: * Veteran suicide rates went up 25 percent, while civilian rates increased 12 percent. * Suicide rates were 20 percent higher than expected in 2000. By 2010, that number was up to 60 percent higher. * Suicide risk for female veterans was higher than that for males. * Female veterans were six times more likely to commit suicide than non-veteran women. Suicides among female veterans increased 40 percent.
* Veterans over age 50 account for 69 percent of veteran suicides. While there have been annual reports about the suicide rates, this one concludes with that crucial fact: Veterans who use VA health services have lower rates of suicide. Researchers admit they weren’t expecting that result. The study didn’t attempt to determine why some veterans don’t seek help at the VA. Maybe one of these annual suicide rate studies will take on that challenge. Sources of help if you’ve had thoughts of suicide: Call the hotline at 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1. Or send a text message to 38255. Go online to go to www.veteranscrisisline.net and chat with a counselor. Every VA medical center has a Women Veteran Program Manager who serves as advocate for female veterans. For referral, women veterans can also call the Women Veterans Call Center, 1-855-VA-WOMEN (1-855-829-6636). If you know you’re in trouble, get help ... now.
