TIDBITS® SAYS -E-I-E-I-O by Kathy Wolfe

This week, Tidbits heads to Old MacDonald’s farm to check out some interesting info about the various animals found there. • “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” was first published in 1917. The oldest recording of the popular tune is thought to be 1925, released by The Sam Patterson Trio on the Edison label. It was followed in 1927 with a version by Gid Tanner & His Skillet Lickers.

• It’s believed that the first cows arrived in North America aboard the ships of Christopher Columbus’ second voyage to the Americas in 1493. • The average dairy cow weighs 1,200 lbs. (544 kg) and produces about 8 gallons (30 liters) of milk per day. It can also produce up to 125 lbs. (57 kg) of saliva in one day. Now that’s a lot of drool! • Although the common conception is that cows have four stomachs, they really have just one single stomach with four different digestive chambers – the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Because of this, they can digest tough plants that normally would be indigestible. • A cow spends about eight hours a day eating and another eight chewing her cud, which is plain talk for regurgitated, partially digested food. turn the page for more!

E-I-E-I-O (continued): Chewing about 50 times per minute, a cow will have more than 40,000 jaw movements throughout the day. That cow will drink up to 50 gallons (189 liters) of water every day. Cows are social animals and actually form friendships with three or four other preferred cows. They can even experience dislike for certain cows. The cow has an amazing sense of smell, able to sniff something up to 6 miles (9.7 km) away. The first chickens most likely came with Christopher Columbus as well. There are now about 200 different breeds, with approximately 280 million laying chickens in the United States, each one producing about 250 to 300 eggs a year. Those seven billion eggs comprise about 10% of the world’s supply. A hen begins laying eggs at about 19 weeks of age. The older she gets, the larger the eggs she produces. It takes her about 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg. Thirty minutes after the egg is laid, she begins the process all over again. Most eggs are laid between the hours of 7 and 11 AM. The hen needs about 5 oz. of food and 10 oz. of water to create one egg. Farmers can improve egg production just by regulating the lighting in the henhouse. The hens will lay more eggs if they’re fooled into thinking a day is 28 hours long. Although we don’t think of them as birds of flight, chickens can actually fly. The recordsetting flight for a non-stop flight is about 230 yards (210 m). They can also travel along the ground at about 9 mph (14.5 kg/hr). Rated the fourth most intelligent animal, pigs are always communicating with each other using their more than 20 different vocalizations, varying from “I’m hungry” to “Wanna be my mate?”

Goldfish’s Sideways Swimming Is No Stunt

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! I went to feed my goldfish, “Sparks,” this morning, and he was having trouble swimming. It’s almost like he’s swimming sideways. What’s wrong with him? -- New to Aquariums in Oakland, California DEAR NEWBIE: What’s happening is most likely a worrying condition commonly called “swim bladder disease.” While it’s not precisely a disease, it can happen for a couple of reasons, and you need to take action immediately. A change in the water’s pH, for one, can cause your goldfish almost immediate distress. If you recently changed the water or cleaned the tank, or if you haven’t done either in a while, that pH balance may be the culprit. Change the water again, paying close attention to the water conditioner you’re adding, and making sure to match the temperature of the new

water with that of the old to prevent stressing out Sparks. The other possibility is diet. When fed nothing but dried pellets, or fed too much, fish can get constipated or bloated. That can manifest as distressed swimming -- like swimming sideways, or even upside down. Don’t feed Sparks anything for two or three days. Then, start with a low-protein food -- many aquarium owners recommend chopping a frozen pea into tiny bits and feeding the fish. Once Sparks recovers, watch him carefully in case he develops an illness, like white spot disease (also known as ich), which can happen when fish are stressed. And look into joining an aquarium or nearby goldfish owners club so you can learn about keeping your fish healthy. Send your questions or tips to ask@pawscorner. com. Ice Cream Bread. Yes, you heard me correctly---

ICE CREAM BREAD

All is right in the world. Ice cream and self rising flour have made beautiful food love and made delicious babies. Perfectly soft bread babies. Seriously, you MUST stop what you are doing right now and make this. I used Butter Pecan Ice Cream because that’s my fav, but you can use whatever flavor you want. This recipe makes one 8 x 4 loaf. You need: 2 cups Ice Cream, softened 1 1/2 cups Self-Rising Flour Preheat your oven to 350. Spray and flour a 8x4 loaf pan. In a medium bowl mix the ice cream and flour together until just combined. Scoop into the loaf pan and smooth out. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick stuck in the loaf comes out with a few crumbs stuck to it. Remove from pan and allow to cool (if you can wait that long)! When you decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Wild Game night. Each week we’re serving a different Wild Game. Find the Game Calendar, our Monthly Specials and the whole menu at woundedgoose.com The Wounded Goose, we have a lot of competition, but our food doesn’t! Kat has had so many request for this recipe we did a reprint!

E-I-E-I-O (continued): • A farmer can expect a fully grown pig to weigh between 300 and 700 lbs. (140 and 300 kg.) Even at that size, an adult pig can run at speeds of up to 11 mph (17.7 km/hr). A pig can’t see very well, but its sense of smell is highly developed. • Pigs have gotten a bad rap over the years, with folks who eat too much or who are messy referred to as pigs. In actuality, pigs eat slowly and enjoy their food. They are careful not to soil the space where they eat and sleep. If a pig is covered in mud, it’s because it rolled in it to keep cool, and it only does that if water is unavailable. And although people might “sweat like pigs,” pigs don’t even sweat! They are physically unable to do so! •

Goats and sheep are some of the first domesticated animals. They arrived in North America in the 1500s on the ships of Spanish explorers and settlers. Different breeds came over with English settlers in the 1600s. There are now about 200 different breeds of goats, some bred for their fiber (angora, mohair, cashmere), some for the meat, and others as dairy goats. An average dairy goat produces about a gallon (3.8 liters) of milk daily. Although we generally think of cows as our chief source of milk, more people drink milk from goats around the world than from any other animal. Goat’s milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk, because the fat globules are smaller and remain dispersed longer in the milk.

• Like the cow, a goat’s stomach also has four chambers. They enjoy all kinds of plant food – shrubs, woody plants, weeds, briars, and aromatic herbs.

Davy Crockett Q: During the 1950s, Walt Disney sponsored the TV show “Davy Crockett” starring Fess Park. Davy Crockett collector cards also were published in a series of 84. Do these have a value? -- Charles, Livingston, Texas A: Your set is valued in the $50-$75 range, depending on condition. More than 500 Davy Crockett products were licensed by Disney, including milk glasses ($8-$25), frontier gun set ($35-$150), lunchbox ($100-$400), cookie jar ($150-$425) and litho button ($15-$55). All prices are from “Hake’s Price Guide to Character Toys” by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. That coonskin cap generally sells for about $35. *** Q: I have inherited a partial set of Depression glass in the Daisy pattern. It is crystal in color. Since I’m missing at least half of the set, I would like to contact others who collect so I can purchase what I don’t already have. Can you help me? I’m also curious about how old this pattern is. -- Doris, Orlando, Florida A: The Daisy pattern was introduced by the Indiana Glass Company in Dunkirk, Indiana, during the late 1930s. It was produced until about 1985. It was made in amber (1940s), crystal (1933-’40), dark green (1960s-’80s), fired-on red (late 1930s) and milk glass

Schroy and published by Krause Books. This guide spotlights more than 170 patterns and lists current market values for 10,000 items. The latest edition has been expanded with values that I think accurately reflect the present marketplace. You also might contact the National Depression Glass Association, an organization that was founded in 1974 is and dedicated to the preservation of American-made glassware. A newsletter, “News & Views,” is published for members. Contact is P.O. * It was Italian novelist and philosopher Umberto Eco who made the following sage observation: “Fear prophets and those prepared to die for the truth, for as a rule they make many others die with them, often before them, and at times instead of them.” * Iconic American rock band the Grateful Dead were originally known as the Warlocks. * It takes an average of 45 seconds in a microwave to make a Twinkie explode. * Dedicated experts at the University of Connecticut Alcohol Center conducted a study in which it was determined that light beer is more likely to cause a hangover than dark beer is. Evidently, lighter beers tend to be more highly carbonated, which causes the alcohol to go through the system faster. * It’s been reported that the Department of Defense has contracted a private lab to come up with a smell that’s so bad, it can be used to control unruly crowds. * The 1942 film “Casablanca” is consistently considered to be one of the best movies ever made. However, executives at Warner Brothers didn’t expect much from the film and gave the producers an extremely small budget. In fact, they were so strapped for cash that the plane used in the movie’s iconic final scene was no more than a cardboard cutout. * The original American Express card was not green, but purple. The now almost-ubiquitous green wasn’t introduced until 1969. * Those who study such things say that if you have bad breath, you’re more likely to be bitten by a bat. * In the 1970s, there was an epidemic of teenagers sniffing airplane glue to get high. In order to discourage this practice, the glue manufacturers began adding an intense oil of mustard to the formula. *** Thought for the Day: “Happiness is good health and a bad memory.” -- Ingrid Bergman (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Donkeys are members of the horse family and are often interbred with horses. The cross between a male donkey (called a jack) and a female horse (mare) produces a mule. Crossing a male horse (stallion) and a female donkey (jenny) results in a hinny, much less common than mules. Mules and hinnies are generally sterile. A donkey can even be interbred with a zebra, with the result known as a zonkey. • A horse’s eyes and teeth take up a lot of space in its head! The male’s 40 teeth take up more space than its brain. The horse also has the biggest eyes of any land mammal, about nine times larger than a human eye. Because of the eye’s location on the side of the head, a horse is able to see nearly 360 degrees at one time. • A horse’s height is measured in “hands,” a measurement of 4” (10.2 cm). In ancient Egypt, this was considered to be the breadth of a man’s hand, the average width across the knuckles. The horse is measured from the ground to the top of the highest point of its skeleton, known as the withers.

E-I-E-I-O (continued): • Goats are natural-born climbers, and some are able to jump more than 5 feet (15.2 m). They have great flexibility and often stand on their back legs to reach tree branches. They can crawl under fences and occasionally even run along the top. • Domesticated around 5,000 years ago in Africa, donkeys can live 30 to 50 years in captivity. They are well known for their ability to carry heavy loads for long distances. Donkeys have a reputation for being stubborn animals, but their dogged refusal to move occasionally is because they are overloaded or they sense danger.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS: FRY AND SILVER Where would we be without the Post-It-Note? Although it feels like this little convenience has been around forever, the public has only been using Post-It’s since 1980. Follow along and learn about the gentlemen whose research brought us one of the world’s most popular office supplies. • Dr. Spencer Silver was a scientist at the 3M Company, assigned to the duty of developing new adhesives. In the midst of his research, he discovered an adhesive that stuck lightly to surfaces but could easily be peeled off. • Fellow researcher Arthur Fry worked in the product development division at 3M, and in 1974, happened to attend a seminar conducted by Silver. During the presentation, Silver mentioned that six years earlier, he had developed a unique adhesive that would adhere to objects with a temporary bond. Silver had not yet come up with a viable use for the invention. • Fry was a devoted member of his church choir, attending practice every Wednesday evening. He used small scraps of paper to mark the hymns the group would sing for the week’s upcoming service, as well as to make notes about the music. But by the time Sunday rolled around, the bookmarks had moved around on the page or fallen out completely. • Shortly after Silver’s seminar, as Fry fumbled with the small pieces of paper in his hymnal, he was struck with the idea of using Silver’s not-yet-utilized adhesive to make a better bookmark. The next day, he sought out Silver and requested a sample, and began a series of experiments. He smeared one edge of the paper so that the part sticking out of the book wasn’t gummy.

FRY AND SILVER (continued): • Teaming up with Silver, the pair set to work developing a new product. It took nearly two years to iron out the technical difficulties. Fry experimented by using the sticky note to pen notes to his supervisor and co-workers to demonstrate its usefulness. In Fry’s words, “I thought, what we have here isn’t just a bookmark. It’s a whole new way to communicate.” • The invention hit the test market in 1977 under the name of Press ‘n Peel, with disappointing results. But once dealers started handing out free samples, there was an immediate turnaround. The product hit the national market in 1980 with a new name, and the rest, as they say, is history. • How did Post-It’s become their distinctive yellow color? Coincidentally, when Fry first started his experiments, the lab only had yellow scrap paper on hand. • Today, the little sticky-notes are available in more than 150 countries around the world, with more than 4,000 different PostIt products available. A recent workplace study indicates that the average office worker receives 11 messages on a Post-In note every day. • On the humorous side, the name of Arthur Fry was mentioned in the 1997 movie Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, after the two ditzy, under-achieving title characters claimed to have invented the Post-it-Note in the years since their high school graduation. A brainy classmate quickly corrected them as to the real inventor.

Tidbits continues to stroll around Old MacDonald’s Farm, discovering more facts about the barnyard. • An adult sheep produces between 7 and 10 lbs. (3.2 and 4.5 kg) of wool a year. That’s about enough to make a man’s suit. One pound (.45 kg) of wool can be spun into 20 miles (32 kg) of yarn. The amount of wool that a sheep produces will vary depending upon its breed, genetics, nutrition, and how often it is sheared. Typically, a sheep is sheared just once a year. Wool from one sheep is called a fleece, while the wool from many is referred to as a clip. • Although California, Colorado, and Wyoming are the top producers of wool in the U.S., their combined total still only accounts for less than 1% of the world’s wool production. China is the largest producer. • Sheep and cow intestines have long been used to manufacture the strings of tennis racquets. Sometimes called catgut, it is created by drying the fibers of the intestine’s serous membrane, which contains natural collagen that provides the elasticity needed for the strings. However, nylon is now the most popular material because its cost is much lower, and its elasticity is better because of multi-filament strings. • The turkey is the only poultry native to North America. Because domesticated turkeys have been bred to have large breasts for cooking purposes, they are top-heavy and unable to fly. However, wild turkeys can fly as fast as 55 mph (89 km/hr) and even roost in the treetops at night to avoid predators. Wild birds can also run up to a speed of 25 mph (40 km/hr). The domestic bird will weigh about twice as much as the wild one.

For Advertising Call (740) 441-7633 BARNYARD (continued): • Are you familiar with all the terms associated with turkeys? That flap of skin that hangs over a turkey’s beak is known as a snood. Brightly-colored fleshy bumps on a turkey’s head and throat are called caruncles. Both the snood and caruncle turn bright red when the bird becomes frightened or agitated. The wattle, that flap of skin under the turkey’s chin, also changes to bright scarlet on a male in the midst of mating season. Although we frequently hear male turkeys called “toms,” they are also referred to as “gobblers,” because of the distinctive noise they make to announce their presence to females. A baby turkey is known as a poult or a chick, and of course, the female is called a hen. • Speaking of gobbling, in addition to the familiar gobble, a male turkey can make more than 30 different vocal sounds, including purrs, yelps, and kee-kees, distinctive and unique enough to be recognized by his fellow males. A gobble can be heard a mile away. Female turkeys usually make a clicking noise.

• Although there are more than 40 breeds of domesticated ducks, the most common is the white Pekin duck, brought to North America in the 1870s. Pekin chicks are born with bright yellow plumage and an orange bill and feet. A farmer can expect an adult Pekin to lay about 200 eggs per year over their lifespan of about 9 to 12 years. They are also the most popular duck consumed for its meat, comprising 95% of all duck meat eaten in the U.S.

By Keith Roach, M. D,

Persistent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome DEAR DR. ROACH: I had surgery late last year on my right wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome. The numbness in my fingers has not changed. Now I’m faced with the same problem in my left hand. I’m going to forget surgery, seeing as it wasn’t successful in my right hand. I decided to go to an acupuncturist for laser treatments. I also had a cortisone shot. Neither of these has helped. Do you know of a solution for my problem? -- P.M. ANSWER: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression on the median nerve, as it runs down the arm through a “tunnel” of bone and connective tissue deep in the wrist. It may cause pain, numbness and weakness of the wrist and hand. The thumb and middle three fingers are most often affected. In advanced cases, the hand muscles may become atrophied. The sooner the pressure on the nerve is relieved, the more likely there will not be permanent nerve damage. It sounds to me like the first surgery was not done soon enough to prevent damage. If that’s the case, then surgery on your left hand, done sooner after the onset of symptoms, might prevent the long-term numbness present in your right hand. However, it’s possible that the diagnosis was wrong or that the surgery might not have been effective, even if done promptly. At least one study of needle acupuncture showed that it is as effective as a cortisone injection. This study excluded people who already had fixed numbness in the fingers, who are less likely to be helped by any treatment. I have not found any evidence that laser treatment is effective. My advice is to first be sure of the diagnosis. An EMG test is a study of nerve function, which can confirm the diagnosis and may be able to predict how much damage there is and provide guidance on treatment. If damage is not too severe, other treatments such as splinting, medication, yoga or ultrasound may be helpful. If advanced, surgery done quickly still may be your best bet. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I just found out that I have lipedema, a rare disease. What can I do about it? My mom and dad don’t have it, nor other family. Should I try to find relatives who have it? I am told that it is an inherited disease. None of these “family” ever had it! -- L.Q. ANSWER: Lipedema is indeed a rare disease, although it may be underdiagnosed. It almost always is found in women, and is suspected when there is marked fat deposition symmetrically between the waist and ankles. The areas affected often are tender or painful to the touch. It is not the same as lymphedema, fluid increase due to poorly functioning or damaged lymph vessels, although people with lipedema can develop lymphedema. Treatment includes compression garments or manual lymph drainage, often combined with surgical treatments such as liposuction. Only about 15 percent of people with lipedema have a family history. It’s not surprising that you can’t find relatives with it. More information is available at several support groups, and at www.curelipedema.org/lipedema/. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Be sure to change it frequently.” -- P.Y. in Alabama * “We unexpectedly had friends visit with their granddaughter. Since it was unplanned, and we aren’t used to little kids, we were unprepared. My quick-thinking husband split open a garbage bag to use as a protective liner on the bed in case of an accident.” -- D.D. in Oregon * Witch hazel is an old remedy for bruises and bumps. You can find it in the first-aid aisle by the peroxide and rubbing alcohol. Simply moisten a folded paper towel, and park it right on the bump (never near the eyes or mouth). It prevents bruising and can lessen swelling in some cases.

Camp Mail Call A yellowed 4-cent postcard surfaced from the bottom of an old shoebox stashed in our attic. A classic in time, it was sent before ZIP codes and eons before cellphones and snappy e-mail. The relic wasn’t written by some great-grandparent, but by my “boomer” husband to his parents when he was off to camp for the first time at Round Lake in northern Minnesota at the age of 10. I’m sure his parents were waiting patiently for news of the week. Was he healthy, happy, making new friends, missing his parents -- but not too much? -- all those concerns we have when our kids are away from home for the first time. Well, here’s what he wrote: “Dear Mom and Dad, I wasn’t going to write, but they made me write it or I couldn’t eat dinner. Camp is really fun. We won volleyball and water polo today and now tied for second place. Well, now that I got this written, I can go eat. Love, Dean” While we like to receive any word from our kids while they’re away at sleepover camp, it’s the campers who also like to hear their name at “mail call.” Here are some tips: --Write and send a note or two to your child’s camp via U.S. mail a few days before he leaves home. Your child will be thrilled to hear from you the first day of camp. Keep the letters coming. They’ll no doubt end up in a scrapbook (or shoebox) your child will treasure in years to come. --If your child is a baseball fan, remember to send clippings of box scores of games missed while away, or send a favorite comic strip from the paper. --Tuck in addressed envelopes, stamps and a pen to encourage your child to write home. --If your child’s camp will print out your e-mailed letters, try not to overload the system. There is a fine line between keeping in touch and letting your child feel independent and “away” from his typical “at home” routine. Tip: A camp experience in the outdoors can positively impact a child. Consider sending a kid to camp by providing scholarship funds for someone who might not otherwise have resources. Contact a camp of your choice or your local YMCA directly to find out how you can sponsor a camper. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Pecan-Crusted Catfish It takes only three ingredients to create this crunchy fish dish from our sister publication Women’s Day. A Tradition Like Any Other Fans of golf are familiar with CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz’s signature phrase used to describe The Masters: “A tradition unlike any other.” They may be less familiar with the catchphrase employed by members of the FOX broadcast team, whose coverage of the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay was universally panned. This is because they don’t really have one yet. This was, as most viewers were painfully aware, the network’s first stab at covering a golf major, and it was a very messy stab, the kind that didn’t kill but left the victim staggering in pain for hours ... kind of like the way FOX made viewers wait around to watch a minute’s worth of a golfer waiting to strike an approach shot. Here are a few potential gems, however: “It is what it is.” -- Tom Weiskopf “I never watch golf [on TV].” -- Greg Norman “It’s actually a tragedy.” -- Gary Player (from the Golf Channel) But don’t think that this wasn’t a perfect follow-up to The Masters. It was. The Masters is where Americans get it right and don’t complain. The U.S. Open was a reflection of the rest of our culture which, sorry to say, is steeped heavily in the tradition of complaining about things. We got our start complaining about taxes and the price of tea, and today we complain about taxes and the prices at Starbucks. The next tournament of note will be in Great Britain. They won’t complain about course conditions in Scotland. They won’t complain about the food, they won’t complain about anything -- except the foreigners. But they’ll manage to carry on, just like they did during the war. When a Nazi bomb fell on the course of the Richmond Golf Club in Surrey, England, during the Battle of Britain, they didn’t complain about it

-- they penalized themselves one stroke if they had to play another ball due to exploding bombs. These were their rules: Richmond Golf Club, Temporary Rules, 1940 1. Players are asked to collect Bomb and Shrapnel splinters to save these causing damage to the mowing machines. 2. In competitions, during gunfire, or while bombs are falling, players may take cover without penalty for ceasing play. 3. The positions of known delayed-action bombs are marked by red flags placed at reasonably, but not guaranteed safe distance therefrom. 4. Shrapnel and/or bomb splinters on the Fairways, or in Bunkers within a club’s length of a ball may be moved without penalty, and no penalty shall be incurred if a ball is thereby caused to move accidentally. 5. A ball moved by enemy action may be replaced, or if lost or destroyed, a ball may be dropped not nearer the hole without penalty. 6. A ball lying in a crater may be lifted and dropped not nearer the hole, preserving the line to the hole without penalty. 7. A player whose stroke is affected by the simultaneous explosion of a bomb may play another ball from the same place. Penalty, one stroke. If the Brits can deal with bombs at home and carry on, we can deal with Joe Buck at a golf tournament ... it’s not nearly as bad as dealing with

our carry-on luggage. Now, that’s something to complain about.

When a study comes out showing that chocolate is good for our health, chocolate lovers rejoice. Now a new study has more good news: Even milk chocolate qualifies. The study in the British journal Heart tracked 20,000 participants for nearly 12 years. Its conclusion? A higher intake of chocolate reduced the risk of cardiovascular events: 11 percent lower for cardiovascular disease, and 25 percent lower for associated death. High intake of chocolate resulted in a 23 percent lower risk of stroke. The bonus: Most of the participants ate milk chocolate, not the allegedly healthier dark chocolate. In years past, the chocolate health studies have said: * Dark chocolate (not milk or white) helps to lower blood pressure. Researchers tested this by having participants swap back and forth at 18-week intervals. * It was the polyphenol antioxidants in cocoa that helped because of the antioxidants -- there are more in chocolate than in red grapes, cranberries or blueberries. The polyphenols cause the blood vessels to open, lowering blood pressure. * A study of men and women who’d had a heart attack showed that chocolate cut the risk of dying from heart problems by nearly 70 percent. Eating chocolate even once a week still cut the risk in half. So while the new research isn’t 100 percent certain in its conclusions, there appears to be something in chocolate that’s good for us. While we wait for scientists to isolate what it is, ask your doctor if adding a bit of chocolate to your diet is a good idea -- just in case. Also ask your doctor to suggest an amount, to err on the side of caution. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Wiseman Real Estate Air Force Vets and Agent Orange The Department of Veterans Affairs has now agreed to provide disability benefits to certain Vietnam-era Air Force veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange in airplanes. Were you ever on a C-123? Did you work on or around the airplanes? Does the name Operation Ranch Hand ring a bell? That was the operation that sprayed the Vietnam jungle and Korea DMZ area with the Agent Orange defoliant, and the C-123 planes were the ones that did it.

Until now, the VA had regularly denied claims from veterans who were ill with any of the 14 AO-related conditions and who said they were exposed to AO on a plane. The VA said there was no danger, that any AO on the planes would have dried. What they didn’t consider was the multiple uses of those C-123s: They also were used by National Guard, medical evacuations, routine cargo and more -- for the next 10 years. What’s disturbing is that the VA has already identified 2,100 Air Force active-duty and reservists who can get compensation. Twentyone hundred? That’s all? It’s also pre-identified the locations where those veterans worked, as well as the Tactical and Aeromedical Squadrons. (Note: The lists vary, depending where you

look.) Back in 2013, one veteran pushed hard and was finally given compensation for Agent Orange exposure that came from being aboard C-123 aircraft. In 1994, his plane had been sent to a museum, and there it was discovered that the plane was still “heavily contaminated” with Agent Orange. Call 1-800-749-8387 for more information or see www.benefits.va.gov and put C-123 Agent Orange in the search box.
