Chronic Pain and Fatigue-Disabling and Deadly! By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, DIBCN Board-certified Neurologist
Muscles hurt when you exert them; you ache all over at times and you are stiff in the morning. Fatigue seems to haunt you and at times it's like someone's pulled the plug and drained all the energy out of your body. You are also noticing other health issues, digestive problems, mood swings and at times you experience brain fog. You are not alone, now more than one in 50 suffer from these syndromes that fall under an alphabet soup of labels, FMS, CFS, ME and PVFS. However you label it with this syndrome you are experiencing a loss of vitality at the cellular level, in a very real sense cellular function has been poisoned by our modern world! This loss of cellular vitality takes place throughout the body especially in energy demanding tissues such as muscles, the digestive tract and the brain. This loss of cellular vitality not only leads to more and more disability in your life but research is now showing rates of earlier mortality from preventable diseases. Because fibromyalgia syndrome is a body wide disorder individuals report an extremely wide variety of symptoms, some more common than others. A full 100% of people with FMS have muscular pain, aching and/or stiffness and about half suffer severe headaches. Almost all suffer from fatigue, insomnia and depression. Up to 73% of FMS patients have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and digestive problems. Individuals with FMS/CFS very commonly suffer from brain health issues such as with difficulty in concentrating and poor short term memory or ‘brain fog’, dyslexia, dizziness, irritability, mood swings, panic attacks, phobias, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, and sleep apnea. Individuals with FMS commonly report easy bruising, itchy skin - with or without a rash, loss of hair, sensitive bladder, mouth ulcers, night cramps, restless leg syndrome, allergies, reoccurring viral infections, chronic rhinitis, dry eyes and mouth. This wide variety of symptoms gives witness to the fact that throughout the body there is not enough energy to run and repair these tissues. This ‘gumming-up’ of your cell function (e.g. muscle, nerve, skin) primarily involves something called chronic inflammation and oxidative stress which always act in unison. Chronic inflammation is nature’s way of signaling through your neuroimmune system that something is wrong within the body. One of the most common triggers of chronic inflammation is something called oxidative stress. Most individuals now take antioxidants or at least have heard about antioxidants. These are nutrients that are meant to stop the formation of cellular oxidative stress. When free radicals’ buildup in tissues it is called oxidative stress which causes damage to cells and genes. This oxidative stress and chronic inflammation leads to the aches and pains and fatigue of FMS/ CFS. Oxidative stress and the chronic inflammation it triggers not only cause disabling pain and fatigue but now has been shown to lead to earlier mortality. A recent study showed that individuals with CFS/FMS syndromes develop heart failure at an average age of 59, whereas the average age of heart failure is 83. The study also found the median age of death from cancer for individuals with CFS/FMS syndromes is 48, while the national average is 87. So, how do you know if oxidative stress and systemic inflammation is taking a terrible toll on vital tissues in your body? There are some unique laboratory tests that I utilize to determine the severity of this damage in individuals with FMS/CFS. In virtually every patient I treat with FMS/CFS, I find indicators of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation elevated. Reaching Our Goals Where do you want to be a year from now? Are there goals you’d like to accomplish in 2012 but don’t feel they’re possible? Far too many of us perceive there are limits that hold us back as we get older. Some of those limits are surmountable, however, with a little analyzing and planning. Start by writing down your goals for 2012. Be specific. Then look at what might be holding you back. Explore the ways you can make it happen. Do you like museums and theater but can’t afford the fees? Call and ask if there are discounts that aren’t advertised, senior discounts or “pay what you can” matinees. Do you want to read more books this year? If your vision is not what it was, make an eye appointment. Look for those page-size magnifying glasses. Can’t get to the library very often? Call to ask if it has a book van or will mail books. Or barter with a friend that drives, and include lunch out. Need to make home repairs or paint your living room but don’t want to be up on a ladder anymore? Hire someone to help with the stipulation that you’ll do part of the work. Want to volunteer but don’t know how to start? Call the senior center or the humane society and tell them you have a free morning every week. They’ll put you to work! Are your goals more along the lines of health and fitness? Consult your doctor and ask for advice. Perhaps he can recommend a local seniors exercise program. Reaching our goals is possible! Holidays Continued During the three days of the country’s annual carnival (held during February or March), the local populace re-enacts an 1194 revolt by the people against a cruel count and his troops. The original revolt was conducted with stones, but today, the citizenry have smartly taken to instead using the oranges that exceed the country’s yearly production quota. Some locals really re-enact the scene enthusiastically, so if you happen to attend, don’t forget to duck. ● In the spring, India celebrates the Holi Festival of Colors. This “colorful” festival was re-created in the 2006 independent film, “Outsourced” (the inspiration for a similarly named NBC sitcom last year). All the colors of the rainbow are tossed around in powders that men and women throw at each other. In addition, people pitch buckets of water on each other, making for a messy good time. These playful activities are accompanied by dancing and the frenzied beating of drums. This festival has political and socio-economic significance as well, since it marks one of the only times where one sees men and women of various social castes mixing in Indian society. ● Thailand’s Songkran Festival, held April 13-15, is part of the Thai New Year and is a very wet tradition. While

“Songkran” is a Sanskrit word that in Thai refers to the influence of the sun on certain Zodiac signs, it is water that captures the attention and imagination of all the locals. ● As part of their celebration of the vernal equinox, the people congregate with buckets, hoses, water balloons, water pistols and anything else that can capably transport water for the purposes of drenching everything and everyone from head to toe. This may well be the world’s biggest water fight. Of course, “fight” isn’t really the right word, because the action of tossing water to others is actually perceived as a demonstration of kindness and respect during the festival. Maybe the “world’s biggest water hug” would be more appropriate. ● Each July, the citizens of the Eastern European republic of Belarus gather for Ivana Kupala Day, a celebration of fertility. Among the customs observed are dancing, singing and the donning of wreaths by both sexes. To add a special twist to their festivities, the people also go skinny-dipping and jump through fire, though presumably not at the same time. ● From the country that gives us the annual “Running of the Bulls” comes an even more curious holiday. On August 27, Spain observes La Tomatina. As you may have gathered from the name, this day involves tomatoes. What you may not have known is that it involves 30,000 people engaged in pitched aerial battle

Perhaps nowhere else has so much produce gone to such silly and undoubtedly enjoyable use. ● We’ve featured the world’s biggest tomato, orange and water fights so far, so why not shine a light on the world’s biggest tug-of-war? The Naha Tug-ofWar takes place on October 11 in the middle of the Naha Festival, one of the largest celebrations in Okinawa, Japan. One of the region’s biggest thoroughfares, Highway 58, is shut down so that tens of thousands can congregate to decide which of the two masses can pull the other 30 meters. This is no simple length of rope, mind you. Made of rice straw, the rope is so large that no single set of hands could possibly hold it. In fact, it’s so big that a series of smaller ropes are attached all over its surface to accommodate the swarm of hands there to participate. Seen from a distance, it might look as if a massive synthetic snake several blocks long and taller than a car had taken control of the freeway. Fortunately, it’s just a Guinness-World-Record-breaking competition in a country famous for its fascinating customs. ● An ex-slave is the focus of the African holiday called Matilda Newport Day,

celebrated on December 1 in Liberia. Elderly Matilda Newport was a brave lady who changed the fate of an entire country with a single act. A colony of freed American slaves was attempting to form its own nation in Equatorial Africa. In a battle between the colonists and hostile indigenous tribes, the tribes were winning, and all but a few colonists abandoned the fight. That’s when Matilda approached a cannon that, having been forsaken by colonists, had drawn the attention of tribesmen. Thinking her harmless, they took no notice when she dropped a burning coal into the curious machine. When it went off, it frightened the invaders so much that they fled, making Newport a most improbable war hero.

Flatulence: Exercise helps move gas out of the system, so take them for a walk. Stop feeding table scraps and dairy foods and ensure they aren’t getting into the trash. Check the soy content of your pet’s food; high soy content causes gas. Many yogurts contain digestion-friendly bacteria that can help decrease flatulence. Give 1/4 tsp. plain yogurt to cats and small dogs, 1 tsp. to dogs 15-20 pounds, and 1 Tbls. to large dogs. Raise their food dish to eliminate air digested while eating. LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD: THE ARCTIC TUNDRA The tundra is “an area where levels of subsoil beneath the surface of the earth are permanently frozen.â€? There are two types of tundra: the Arctic Tundra and the Alpine Tundra. • The Arctic Tundra is found near or north of the Arctic Circle around the North Pole. Alpine Tundra is found at many different mountain top locations on earth at altitudes where trees do not grow.
• The Arctic Tundra is located in northern Alaska and Canada, Greenland, northern Russia and parts of the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland. • Permafrost is the permanently frozen layer of soil and dead plants that extends about 1,476 feet (450 m) under the surface of the tundra. the winter. • Grasses, sedges, lichens and willow shrubs make up most of the tundra vegetation. Most of the plants grow very close to the ground because of the drying cold winds. Some of the low plants are called “cushion plants.â€? • A natural phenomenon that is visible in much of the Arctic Tundra is the “Northern Lights.â€? Also known as the aurora borealis, the light shows are a result of solar activity interacting with the earth’s magnetic fields and solar weather. In the southern hemisphere the light activity is called aurora australis. Unfortunately, these lights are not visible in warm weather when most people would prefer to visit the areas close to the poles. • If you have the opportunity to go north to the Arctic Tundra, it will be a memorable trip with sights unlike anything seen anywhere else.

Catch one and it means good luck for an entire year! ● Northern Italians engage in fruitflinging silliness when they observe Iverea Carnevale’s “Battle of the Oranges.”
