STUBBORN BODY FAT when you get Chronic Pain and Fatigue-Disabling and Deadly!
stuck, you need a little extra help Try this “Healthbits Special
By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, DIBCN Board-certified Neurologist
Muscles hurt when you exert them; you ache all over at times and you are stiff in the morning. Fatigue seems to haunt you and at times it's like someone's pulled the plug and drained all the energy out of your body. You are also noticing other health issues, digestive problems, mood swings and at times you experience brain fog. You are not alone, now more than one in 50 suffer from these syndromes that fall under an alphabet soup of labels, FMS, CFS, ME and PVFS. However you label it with this syndrome you are experiencing a loss of vitality at the cellular level, in a very real sense cellular function has been poisoned by our modern world! This loss of cellular vitality takes place throughout the body especially in energy demanding tissues such as muscles, the digestive tract and the brain. This loss of cellular vitality not only leads to more and more disability in your life but research is now showing rates of earlier mortality from preventable diseases. Because fibromyalgia syndrome is a body wide disorder individuals report an extremely wide variety of symptoms, some more common than others. A full 100% of people with FMS have muscular pain, aching and/or stiffness and about half suffer severe headaches. Almost all suffer from fatigue, insomnia and depression. Up to 73% of FMS patients have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and digestive problems. Individuals with FMS/CFS very commonly suffer from brain health issues such as with difficulty in concentrating and poor short term memory or ‘brain fog’, dyslexia, dizziness, irritability, mood swings, panic attacks, phobias, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, and sleep apnea. Individuals with FMS commonly report easy bruising, itchy skin - with or without a rash, loss of hair, sensitive bladder, mouth ulcers, night cramps, restless leg syndrome, allergies, reoccurring viral infections, chronic rhinitis, dry eyes and mouth. This wide variety of symptoms gives witness to the fact that throughout the body there is not enough energy to run and repair these tissues. This ‘gumming-up’ of your cell function (e.g. muscle, nerve, skin) primarily involves something called chronic inflammation and oxidative stress which always act in unison. Chronic inflammation is nature’s way of signaling through your neuroimmune system that something is wrong within the body. One of the most common triggers of chronic inflammation is something called oxidative stress. Most individuals now take antioxidants or at least have heard about antioxidants. These are nutrients that are meant to stop the formation of cellular oxidative stress. When free radicals’ buildup in tissues it is called oxidative stress which causes damage to cells and genes. This oxidative stress and chronic inflammation leads to the aches and pains and fatigue of FMS/ CFS. Oxidative stress and the chronic inflammation it triggers not only cause disabling pain and fatigue but now has been shown to lead to earlier mortality. A recent study showed that individuals with CFS/FMS syndromes develop heart failure at an average age of 59, whereas the average age of heart failure is 83. The study also found the median age of death from cancer for individuals with CFS/FMS syndromes is 48, while the national average is 87. So, how do you know if oxidative stress and systemic inflammation is taking a terrible toll on vital tissues in your body? There are some unique laboratory tests that I utilize to determine the severity of this damage in individuals with FMS/CFS. In virtually every patient I treat with FMS/CFS, I find indicators of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation elevated. A doctor must be trained in utilizing and properly interpreting these biomarkers to make them useful to the patient's recovery This very important and complex subject matter is covered in great detail in my book “Why We Hurt and at my Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue- You Can Recover-Naturally! Fat...
finding a tune
The old song, "It don't come easy" can apply to attempts to burn off stubborn body fat. You run, you lift, you watch what you eat, yet some parts of your body persist in hanging onto fat deposits. When you get stuck, you need a little extra help...and it's available from Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) CLA has been shown to: Increase metabolic rate• Decrease abdominal fat • Enhance muscle growth (muscles burn fat) • Lower cholesterol and triglycerides• Lower insulin resistance • Reduce food-induced allergic reactions • Enhance your immune system. In addition to CLA's fat burning benefit, a Finnish study showed that women who had the highest levels of CLA in their diet had a 60 percent lower risk of breast cancer than those with the lowest levels. CLAs are good fats that occur naturally in meat and dairy from wild game and grassfed animals that are given fresh pastures to roam in. Interestingly, when animals are penned in feed lots, even if they are grassfed, CLA production immediately declines in the animal, as does the production of Omega 3 oils. Switching from grain-fed to grass fed meat and dairy products lowers cancer risk and increases metabolic rate due to the CLA's. This applies to beef, lamb, cheese, milk, and more. Grass-fed beef looks and taste slightly different—the fat is yellowish, while cornfed beef fat is white, and the meat is a darker, denser red. Cooking takes about a third to a fourth less time, too. If you can't consume these foods daily, a great way to get your CLA's is to at least one serving of grass-fed beef, milk, or cheese from a free-roaming farm or hunted animal such as deer a couple of times a week. If this is too inconvenient, take CLA soft -gels.

Reaching Our Goals Where do you want to be a year from now? Are there goals you’d like to accomplish in 2012 but don’t feel they’re possible? Far too many of us perceive there are limits that hold us back as we get older. Some of those limits are surmountable, however, with a little analyzing and planning. Start by writing down your goals for 2012. Be specific. Then look at what might be holding you back. Explore the ways you can make it happen. Do you like museums and theater but can’t afford the fees? Call and ask if there are discounts that aren’t advertised, senior discounts or “pay what you can” matinees. Do you want to read more books this year? If your vision is not what it was, make an eye appointment. Look for those page-size magnifying glasses. Can’t get to the library very often? Call to ask if it has a book van or will mail books. Or barter with a friend that drives, and include lunch out. Need to make home repairs or paint your living room but don’t want to be up on a ladder anymore? Hire someone to help with the stipulation that you’ll do part of the work. Want to volunteer but don’t know how to start? Call the senior center or the humane society and tell them you have a free morning every week. They’ll put you to work! Are your goals more along the lines of health and fitness? Consult your doctor and ask for advice. Perhaps he can recommend a local seniors exercise program. Reaching our goals is possible! Sometimes we only have to ask questions to find the answers. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Holidays Continued During the three days of the country’s annual carnival (held during February or March), the local populace re-enacts an 1194 revolt by the people against a cruel count and his troops. The original revolt was conducted with stones, but today, the citizenry have smartly taken to instead using the oranges that exceed the country’s yearly production quota. Some locals really re-enact the scene enthusiastically, so if you happen to attend, don’t forget to duck. ● In the spring, India celebrates the Holi Festival of Colors. This “colorful” festival was re-created in the 2006 independent film, “Outsourced” (the inspiration for a similarly named NBC sitcom last year). All the colors of the rainbow are tossed around in powders that men and women throw at each other. In addition, people pitch buckets of water on each other, making for a messy good time. These playful activities are accompanied by dancing and the frenzied beating of drums. This festival has political and socio-economic significance as well, since it marks one of the only times where one sees men and women of various social castes mixing in Indian society. ● Thailand’s Songkran Festival, held April 13-15, is part of the Thai New Year and is a very wet tradition. While

“Songkran” is a Sanskrit word that in Thai refers to the influence of the sun on certain Zodiac signs, it is water that captures the attention and imagination of all the locals. ● As part of their celebration of the vernal equinox, the people congregate with buckets, hoses, water balloons, water pistols and anything else that can capably transport water for the purposes of drenching everything and everyone from head to toe. This may well be the world’s biggest water fight. Of course, “fight” isn’t really the right word, because the action of tossing water to others is actually perceived as a demonstration of kindness and respect during the festival. Maybe the “world’s biggest water hug” would be more appropriate. ● Each July, the citizens of the Eastern European republic of Belarus gather for Ivana Kupala Day, a celebration of fertility. Among the customs observed are dancing, singing and the donning of wreaths by both sexes. To add a special twist to their festivities, the people also go skinny-dipping and jump through fire, though presumably not at the same time. ● From the country that gives us the annual “Running of the Bulls” comes an even more curious holiday. On August 27, Spain observes La Tomatina. As you may have gathered from the name, this day involves tomatoes. What you may not have known is that it involves 30,000 people engaged in pitched aerial battle

caused people to perceive criminals as evil and alien to the rest of society. ► On Feb. 1, 1917, Germany returns to the policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic as it prepares to attack any and all ships. Two days later, the United States broke off diplomatic relations with Germany. Just hours after that, the American liner Housatonic was sunk by a German U-boat. ► On Feb. 4, 1922, the Ford Motor Company acquires the failing luxury automaker Lincoln Motor Company for $8 million. Ford’s son Edsel eventually helped to convince his father to drop his famous rule: “You can have any color, as long as it’s black.” ► On Jan. 30, 1948, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, is assassinated in New Delhi by a Hindu fanatic. Known as Mahatma, Gandhi’s persuasive methods of civil disobedience influenced leaders of civil rights movements, especially Martin Luther King Jr.

with the beloved red (or green) fruit. For two hours, natives toss tomatoes at each other until 125,000 of them pepper the landscape and people. It’s all in good fun, celebrating a similar spontaneous food fight that broke out during a parade over 65 years ago. Perhaps nowhere else has so much produce gone to such silly and undoubtedly enjoyable use. ● We’ve featured the world’s biggest tomato, orange and water fights so far, so why not shine a light on the world’s biggest tug-of-war? The Naha Tug-ofWar takes place on October 11 in the middle of the Naha Festival, one of the largest celebrations in Okinawa, Japan. One of the region’s biggest thoroughfares, Highway 58, is shut down so that tens of thousands can congregate to decide which of the two masses can pull the other 30 meters. This is no simple length of rope, mind you. Made of rice straw, the rope is so large that no single set of hands could possibly hold it. In fact, it’s so big that a series of smaller ropes are attached all over its surface to accommodate the swarm of hands there to participate. Seen from a distance, it might look as if a massive synthetic snake several blocks long and taller than a car had taken control of the freeway. Fortunately, it’s just a Guinness-World-Record-breaking competition in a country famous for its fascinating customs. ● An ex-slave is the focus of the African holiday called Matilda Newport Day,

celebrated on December 1 in Liberia. Elderly Matilda Newport was a brave lady who changed the fate of an entire country with a single act. A colony of freed American slaves was attempting to form its own nation in Equatorial Africa. In a battle between the colonists and hostile indigenous tribes, the tribes were winning, and all but a few colonists abandoned the fight. That’s when Matilda approached a cannon that, having been forsaken by colonists, had drawn the attention of tribesmen. Thinking her harmless, they took no notice when she dropped a burning coal into the curious machine. When it went off, it frightened the invaders so much that they fled, making Newport a most improbable war hero.

An Acne Study for Ages 12 and Up!
■There’s a reason most refrigerators have more than one crisper drawer. Some items need to be stored separately. For example, keep apples and carrots in different compartments. The apples give off a gas that can give the carrots a bitter taste.
Volunteers, ages 12 to 40 are wanted for an investigational drug research study that will compare topical study medications for the treatment of acne.
■“Mix some salt with a little bit of water and rub the mixture over your hands for a few minutes to get rid of the smell of garlic or onions from cooking. Rinse under cold water. -- J.J. in Nevada ■Toothpaste works well as a silver polish. Wet your silver, plop a little nongel toothpaste on it and rub gently to clean. Rinse well, and let it shine! ■A great hint from Mary R. of Duluth, Ga.: “If the kids are drawing with felt markers and their hands get covered with ink, don’t worry. Just spray their hands down with hairspray, and then wipe off the ink with a paper towel. Don’t forget to wash their hands afterward! ■Use this quick fix for oily hair. Rub a small amount of cornstarch into the oily areas of your hair. The cornstarch will soak up the dirt and oil; you just brush it out.
If your child or you have 20 or more pimples on your face, we have a 12-Week study that you or your child may qualify for participation. All participants are seen by a board certified Dermatologist. No cost study related evaluations

Speed Your Ironing - When you iron clothing, a lot of the iron’s heat is sucked up by the board itself—requiring you to make several passes to remove wrinkles. To speed things up, put a piece of aluminum foil under your ironing board cover. The foil will reflect the heat back through the clothing, smoothing wrinkles quicker.

Keep Bees Away From Beverages - You’re about to relax in your backyard with a well deserved glass of lemonade or soda pop. Suddenly bees start buzzing around your drink—which they view as sweet nectar. Keep them away by tightly covering the top of your glass with aluminum foil. Poke a straw through it, and then enjoy your drink in peace.

Kitty Litter: To keep cat litter fresh smelling, mix baby powder in with the litter.
Flatulence: Exercise helps move gas out of the system, so take them for a walk. Stop feeding table scraps and dairy foods and ensure they aren’t getting into the trash. Check the soy content of your pet’s food; high soy content causes gas. Many yogurts contain digestion-friendly bacteria that can help decrease flatulence. Give 1/4 tsp. plain yogurt to cats and small dogs, 1 tsp. to dogs 15-20 pounds, and 1 Tbls. to large dogs. Raise their food dish to eliminate air digested while eating. Fleas: Though a preventative such as AdvantageŽ, FrontlineŽ, RevolutionŽ, or K9 AdvantixŽ is the best way to treat and prevent fleas, a diet including Brewer’s Yeast and garlic prove to keep them away, as well. Flea collars, powders, and dips only work temporarily; don’t consider them for long-term use or you’ll find the fleas returning.

LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD: THE ARCTIC TUNDRA The tundra is “an area where levels of subsoil beneath the surface of the earth are permanently frozen.â€? There are two types of tundra: the Arctic Tundra and the Alpine Tundra. • The Arctic Tundra is found near or north of the Arctic Circle around the North Pole. Alpine Tundra is found at many different mountain top locations on earth at altitudes where trees do not grow.
• The Arctic Tundra is located in northern Alaska and Canada, Greenland, northern Russia and parts of the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland. • Permafrost is the permanently frozen layer of soil and dead plants that extends about 1,476 feet (450 m) under the surface of the tundra. The average summer temperature is 10 to 20° F (-12 to -6° C). Winter temperatures

the winter. • Grasses, sedges, lichens and willow shrubs make up most of the tundra vegetation. Most of the plants grow very close to the ground because of the drying cold winds. Some of the low plants are called “cushion plants.â€? • A natural phenomenon that is visible in much of the Arctic Tundra is the “Northern Lights.â€? Also known as the aurora borealis, the light shows are a result of solar activity interacting with the earth’s magnetic fields and solar weather. In the southern hemisphere the light activity is called aurora australis. Unfortunately, these lights are not visible in warm weather when most people would prefer to visit the areas close to the poles. • If you have the opportunity to go north to the Arctic Tundra, it will be a memorable trip with sights unlike anything seen anywhere else.
Who Knew??? â– Antarctica is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest place on earth. â– An ice sheet covers all but 2.4 percent of Antarctica’s 14 million square kilometers. â–
At its thickest point the ice sheet is 4,776 meters deep and averages 2,160 meters thick. This is 90 percent of all the world’s ice and it is 70 percent of all the world’s fresh water.
■Sure, there are lots of penguins, whales, seals, krill (the main food for whales), and even fish in Antarctica’s waters, but there are no land mammals and, as far as scientists know, no native peoples. (P.S.) Eskimos and polar bears are found in the ARCTIC, not the Antarctic. ■The mean annual temperature at the South Pole is minus 56 degrees F. During the Austral Summer, temperatures at McMurdo base, on the Ross Sea, may get as high as a scorching 40 degrees F, while at the South Pole, at the Amundsen-Scott station, temperatures may reach a balmy 0 degrees F. ■The area below 60 degrees south enjoys one long day and one long night each year. average -20 to -30° F (-28 to -34° C). In much of the Arctic Tundra, the permafrost is frozen year round, but in the southern areas, the ground above the permafrost will thaw in the short summers allowing perennial plants to grow. • The sun shines 24 hours a day during the short 50 to 60 day growing season of summer, while winter brings complete darkness. The summer melting forms bogs and shallow lakes, and animal life abounds. Insects and millions of migrating birds feed on the summer bogs and plant growth. The ground refreezes in winter, and the plants go dormant, waiting for the sun and warmth of the next short summer. • Permafrost doesn’t allow for roots of trees to penetrate deep in the earth, so a characteristic of the Arctic Tundra is that it is generally treeless and barren. Just like deserts, tundra areas receive little precipitation. • Arctic foxes, snow geese, polar bears, gray wolves, caribou (also known as reindeer) and musk-oxen live in the Arctic Tundra. There are also Arctic hares, known by many as “snowshoe rabbits,â€? lemmings, snowy owls and more. Some mammals and birds actually turn white in the winter and brown in the summer for camouflage. The permafrost of the tundra prevents most animals from hibernating in underground burrows in

Thought for the Day: “My father taught me to work, but not to love it. I never did like to work, and I don’t deny it. I’d rather read, tell stories, crack jokes, talk, laugh -- anything but work. -- Abraham Lincoln
*********************
During this election season, it might be good to keep in mind the following sage observation, made beloved humorist Will Rogers: “The American people are generous and will forgive almost any weakness with the exception of stupidity. Mountain goats aren’t actually goats; they’re antelopes. Those who study such things say that a mosquito flaps its wings 1,000 times every second. If you’ve ever been to London -- or if you’ve seen a movie that was set there -- you might remember the iconic black taxicabs that are ubiquitous in that city; the high roofs set them apart from other vehicles on the streets. The headroom offered did once serve a purpose. When the cars were originally designed, top hats were still de rigueur for a properly dressed gentleman, and the high roofs allowed a man so attired to enter and leave the vehicle without knocking off his hat. You might be surprised to learn that some ants can live more than 15 years. Washington is the only U.S. state named for a president. In medieval Japan, dentists removed patients’ teeth with their bare hands. When the now-classic television show “Gilligan’s Island first aired in 1964, critics were not impressed. The review published in the San Francisco Chronicle said, “It is difficult to believe that this show was written, directed and produced by adults. It marks a new low in the networks’ estimation of public intelligence. The show went on to air for three seasons and spurred three TV movie sequels. Believing that beards and long hair were too easy for enemies to grab, Alexander the Great ordered his soldiers to shave their faces and heads before going into battle. You hear a lot about the isolationism of Switzerland -- the country that’s always neutral in any conflict -but you might be surprised to learn how serious they are about it. The country’s system of roads is mined in 2,000 places and can be demolished in the space of 10 minutes. When the territory that later became the state of Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867, the cost came out to about 2 cents per acre.

To people outside of the United States, several of our holidays may seem peculiar. Imagine a foreign person arriving here during our Halloween celebration, for instance. Crowds of people dressed in frightful costumes and wandering the streets looking for candy might appear like an instance of mass insanity to an outsider. All over the world, people conduct similarly unusual (and fun) celebrations. Below, Tidbits explores just a few. Have you ever thought to yourself, “There just aren’t enough holidays where grown men cavort in diapers? No? Well, Japan has a similar holiday for you anyway. On January 14, people in Japan celebrate The Naked Festival where men gather in loincloths (not actual diapers, thankfully) and galavant all over the city until the clock strikes 12. At midnight, they gather in a Shinto temple to observe another interesting tradition, attempting to catch bits of wood dropped from overhead by a local priest. Catch one and it means good luck for an entire year! Northern Italians engage in fruitflinging silliness when they observe Iverea Carnevale’s “Battle of the Oranges.
