Why Die Before Your Time? What is Anti-Aging Medicine? By Dr. Greg Fors

Are you living the life you dreamed of when you were young? One filled with the vitality and personal power to create the happiness you knew you were meant for? If not then please read on, there is help. Much too often in our society individuals find themselves suffering with the symptoms of premature aging. They are plagued with constant muscle and joint pain, chronic fatigue and the loss of strength and drive. Many people become needlessly crippled and millions die early every year from avoidable age-related conditions. It need not be this way, but it takes making a personal decision followed with the determination and will to want to be better. Degenerative aging can be diagnosed and most definitely can be slowed with better diet and lifestyle choices. A n t i aging medicine, the clinical use of advanced laboratory medicine for early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of agerelated dysfunctions and diseases is not new. Practicing doctors of Anti-aging medicine use proper diet, lifestyle choices, and proven functional medicine to help their patients live healthy, longer and better lives. What must you do now? You’ve heard this before... “Stop the self inflicted injury. Negative habits can hurt more than any healthy life extension techniques could ever compensate for. Face it, what is the point of painting the house if you are letting the foundation crumble? Here it comes... do you smoke or do recreational drugs? STOP! Do you eat junk food or are overweight? STOP! Do you exercise little or not at all? START! Begin right now to adopt a healthy lifestyle and here’s a starting point. If you haven’t seen a doctor in years, or feel your present doctor does not know how to keep you healthy without drugs, then find one you can trust to talk about actually improving your health instead of being treated with more drugs. It’s possible, the body is complex and wonderfully resilient. However, unlike your car, you can’t just replace it when it permanently breaks down. READ ON! The primary cause of early aging and degenerative disease is ‘oxidative stress and chronic inflammation’. It’s like your tissues are “on simmer, and sort of cooking away at an accelerated rate. The main culprit is free radicals, small molecules lacking an electron. These free radicals steal an electron from healthy cells; it’s like pulling a cog from a fine Swiss watch and expecting it to keep proper time. Free radicals can even start destroying your cellular DNA. Our increased exposure to chemicals and toxic metals in the today’s environment is one of the primary causes for free radicals. It’s a modern day dilemma that needs a modern day approach to fix. Doctors knowledgeable in anti-aging medicine know about laboratory biomarkers that identify high levels of chronic inflammation and free radical damage. They also have the know how to assist you in stopping the damage, improve your vital health, and prevent further degenerative diseases. Another vital factor in anti-aging medicine is proper balanced hormone function, and most importantly, proper thyroid function. To fully understand a patient’s thyroid function requires at least 6 to 8 thyroid tests. Just running the typical TSH and T4 catches only 17% of the individuals with thyroid dysfunction. This is especially true in women. In men the most important hormone balance to fight premature aging is testosterone levels. To properly diagnose male hormonal balance requires at least six tests, and not just total testosterone. With proper assessment men can achieve better hormone balance to defeat premature aging plus regain loss of vitality, drive and intimacy. I could go on and I will, but not here. Free radicals, proper hormonal balance, anti-aging medicine, the lab tests to properly diagnose these conditions, and discussions on natural solutions for healthy aging will be the subject matter of my upcoming FREE seminars. These seminars will be held at 7 PM Wednesday, April 4th and 7 PM Monday, April 9th at the Pain and Brain Healing Center. One is also scheduled for Monday, April 23rd 6:30 PM at Fridley public library. For details please see our advertisement below.

Cracks Some Eggs (continued)

• Not only does the yolk contain cholesterol, it also contains the vitamins and minerals that make it a nutritional powerhouse. Egg yolks are one of the few foods with naturally occurring vitamin D. Hard-boiled eggs, like those decorated, hidden and hunted at Easter, provide about 17 grams of protein. Egg whites are an excellent source of low-fat protein. • Eggs are also a good source of choline, which has been shown to help preserve memory, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, which may help prevent vision loss. Nutritionists say that eggs can help with weight management, eye health, muscle strength, brain functions and are valuable for healthy pregnancies. • Easter eggs and the Easter bunny are considered symbols of new life and rebirth. Ancient cultures like the Persians, Hindus and Egyptians believed the world started as a large egg. • The new life symbolism was probably the association that made way for the Easter Bunny. Rabbits, like eggs, have always been associated with birth and fertility. • The legend of the Easter Bunny had its start in Germany. The story goes that a poor woman living in Germany decorated eggs to hide and be hunted as entertainment for her children. As soon

Pysanky folk art, where eggs are decorated using beeswax in a wax resist method, is a practice that has been around for thousands of years in Ukraine. Over 10,000 pysanky are displayed in the egg-shaped Pysanka Museum that opened in September 2000 in Kolomyia, Ukraine. • Canada, specifically Vegreville, Alberta, is home to the world’s largest pysanka. The area has many Ukrainian immigrants, and the pysanka was chosen as a symbol to honor the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in their centennial year of 1975. • While the Vegreville pysanka is the world’s largest inedible Easter egg, there have been a number of large edible chocolate eggs in recent years. Vying for recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records (GWR), impressive chocolate eggs usually make their debuts at shopping centers. A 14,197-pound, 12-ounce (6,440-kg) chocolate Easter egg was on display at a shopping center in Sao Jose, Santa Cararina, Brazil on April 3, 2010. • Last year, that one was beaten out for the title by an even larger egg displayed at a shopping center in Cortenuova, Italy. According to GWR, it weighed an impressive 15,873 pounds (7,200 kg). Now that is a lot of chocolate — and not quite as healthy as a real egg!

TIP BITS By JoAnn Derson

■“I had to pick up a bunch of BBs that spilled in our garage. It was very aggravating, until I decided to get out my vacuum. I put a very thin sock (didn’t have any panty hose) on the end and tucked it into the hose. I secured it with a zip tie. I was able to suck up most of the BBs, and they went right back in the container. -- E.L. in North Carolina

■Try this trick to increase the volume on your iPod (without earbuds, that is): Place it in a deep bowl. The bowl amplifies and directs the sound. ■Chrome is easily cleaned and shined up with vinegar. Keep a misting bottle in the bathroom to give handles a quick swipe after getting ready in the morning or evening. ■Need to hull strawberries? Try using a straw. Position the straw at the bottom of the strawberry, then push up toward the stem. It works quickly and well. ■If your entertainment electronics have a clock that is too bright, cover it with plain tape. You’ll still be able to read the time, but the tape will lessen the glare. ■If new denims are too stiff, add half a cup of salt to the wash water along with your regular detergent. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc. Ant Control - Spread some ground cinnamon where you think the ants are coming in to the house. Basil repels flies and mosquitoes. To deter ants, use catnip. Sprinkle it in their paths. Make a mixture of 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup white vinegar, and 2-3 Tablespoons dish soap. Spray where the ants are marching. Natural Mosquito Repellents Splashing plain rubbing alcohol on yourself and allowing it to dry will deter mosquitoes from biting you. Rub Vick’s VaporubŽ on your pants and legs to ward off ticks. Use half vanilla (has to be pure vanilla) and half water for a mosquito and tick repellent. Dab lavender oil on your pulse points; it smells great on you but repels insects. ● The largest recorded earthquake in the world was a magnitude 9.5 (Mw) in Chile on May 22, 1960. ● The earliest reported earthquake in California was felt in 1769 by the exploring expedition of Gaspar de Portola while the group was camping about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles. ● The average rate of motion across the San Andreas Fault Zone during the past 3 million years is 2 in/yr. This is about the same rate at which your fingernails grow. Assuming this rate continues, scientists project that Los Angeles and San Francisco will be adjacent to one another in approximately 15 million years. ● The East African Rift System is a 31-37 mile wide zone of active volcanics and faulting that extends northsouth in eastern Africa for more than 1864 miles from Ethiopia in the north to Zambezi in the south. It is a rare example of an active continental rift zone, where a continental plate is attempting to split into two plates which are moving away from one another. ● The first “pendulum seismoscope” to measure the shaking of the ground during an earthquake was developed in 1751, and it wasn’t until 1855 that faults were recognized as the source of earthquakes. ● Moonquakes (“earthquakes” on the moon) do occur, but they happen less frequently and have smaller magnitudes than earthquakes on the Earth. It appears they are related to the tidal stresses associated with the varying distance between the Earth and Moon. They also occur at great depth, about halfway between the surface and the center of the moon. ● Although both are sea waves, a tsunami and a tidal wave are two different unrelated phenomenona. A tidal wave is a shallow water wave caused by the gravitational interactions between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. A tsunami is a sea wave caused by an underwater earthquake or landslide (usually triggered by an earthquake) displacing the ocean water. ● The hypocenter of an earthquake is the location beneath the earth’s surface where the rupture of the fault begins. The epicenter of an earthquake is the location directly above the hypocenter on the surface of the earth. ● The world’s greatest land mountain range is the Himalaya-Karakoram. It countains 96 of the world’s 109 peaks of over 24,000 ft. The longest range is the Andes of South America which is 4700 miles in length. Both were created by the movement of tectonic plates. ● It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage. ● A seiche (pronounced SAYSH) is what happens in the swimming pools of Californians during and after an earthquake. It is “an internal wave oscillating in a body of water” or, in other words, it is the sloshing of

Page 4

the water in your swimming pool, or any body of water, caused by the ground shaking in an earthquake. It may continue for a few moments or hours, long after the generating force is gone. A seiche can also be caused by wind or tides. ● Each year the southern California area has about 10,000 earthquakes. Most of them are so small that they are not felt. Only several hundred are greater than magnitude 3.0, and only about 15-20 are greater than magnitude 4.0. If there is a large earthquake, however, the aftershock sequence will produce many more earthquakes of all magnitudes for many months. ● The magnitude of an earthquake is a measured value of the earthquake size. The magnitude is the same no matter where you are, or how strong or weak the shaking was in various locations. The intensity of an earthquake is a measure of the shaking created by the earthquake, and this value does vary with location. ● The Wasatch Range, with its outstanding ski areas, runs North-South through Utah, and like all mountain ranges it was produced by a series of earthquakes. The 240-mile-long Wasatch Fault is made up of several segments, each capable of producing up to a M7.5 earthquake. During the past 6,000 years, there has been a M6.5+ about once every 350 years, and it has been about 350 years since the last powerful earthquake, which was on the Nephi segment. ● From 1975-1995 there were only four states that did not have any earthquakes. They were: Florida, Iowa, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. ● The core of the earth was the first internal structural element to be identified. In 1906 R.D. Oldham discovered it from his studies of earthquake records. The inner core is solid, and the outer core is liquid and so does not transmit the shear wave energy released during an earthquake. ● The swimming pool at the University of Arizona in Tucson lost water from sloshing (seiche) caused by the 1985 M8.1 Michoacan, Mexico earthquake 1240 miles away. ● Earthquakes occur in the central portion of the United States too! Some very powerful earthquakes occurred along the New Madrid fault in the Mississippi Valley in 1811-1812. Because of the crustal structure in the Central US which efficiently propagates seismic energy, shaking from earthquakes in this part of the country are felt at a much greater distance from the epicenters than similar size quakes in the Western US. ● Most earthquakes occur at depths of less than 50 miles from the Earth’s surface. ● The San Andreas fault is NOT a single, continuous fault, but rather is actually a fault zone made up of many segments. Movement may occur along any of the many fault segments along the zone at any time. The San Andreas fault system is more that 800 miles long, and in some spots is as much as 10 miles deep. ● The world’s deadliest recorded earthquake occurred

in 1556 in central China. It struck a region where most people lived in caves carved from soft rock. These dwellings collapsed during the earthquake, killing an estimated 830,000 people. In 1976 another deadly earthquake struck in Tangshan, China, where more than 250,000 people were killed. ● Florida and North Dakota have the smallest number of earthquakes in the United States. ● Alaska is the most earthquake-prone state and one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Alaska experiences a magnitude 7 earthquake almost every year, and a magnitude 8 or greater earthquake on average every 14 years. ● The earliest recorded evidence of an earthquake has been traced back to 1831 BC in the Shandong province of China, but there is a fairly complete record starting in 780 BC during the Zhou Dynasty in China. ● It was recognized as early as 350 BC by the Greek scientist Aristotle that soft ground shakes more than hard rock in an earthquake. ● Human beings can detect sounds in the frequency range 20-20,000 Hertz. If a P wave refracts out of the rock surface into the air, and it has a frequency in the audible range, it will be heard as a rumble. Most earthquake waves have a frequency of less than 20 Hz, so the waves themselves are usually not heard. Most of the rumbling noise heard during an earthquake is the building and its contents moving. ● When the Chilean earthquake occurred in 1960, seismographs recorded seismic waves that traveled all around the Earth. These seismic waves shook the entire earth for many days! This phenomenon is called the free oscillation of the Earth. ● The interior of Antarctica has icequakes which, although they are much smaller, are perhaps more frequent than earthquakes in Antarctica. The icequakes are similar to earthquakes, but occur within the ice sheet itself instead of the land underneath the ice. Some of our polar observers have told us they can hear the icequakes and see them on the South Pole seismograph station, but they are much too small to be seen on enough stations to obtain a location.

In the middle of Hollywood, near the famed intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, sits a building like no other in Los An-geles County. Seen from above, it’s the one structure that could pass for an alien installation in some futuristic metropolis. Thirteen stories of architectural innovation with a long white spire sitting atop, it’s the Capitol Records Building, also known as the Capitol Records Tower or Capitol Tower. • The Capitol Records Building was the world’s first circular office building. The remarkable structure was the brainchild of designers Welton Becket and Louis Naidorf, and it has been described by the Los Angeles Times as ranking “among the dozen or so best-known landmarks in all of Southern California.â€? Created as a mixed-use building, the Capitol Tower is less than a 150 feet tall. * Many have suggested that the building’s re-semblance to a stack of records was by design, but it was actually a happy accident. The shape was actually a response to the problem of available space created by earth-quake regulations that limited the structure’s height. The shape allowed designers to max-imize the number and size of offices availa-ble within its walls, and the circular shape resulted in considerably lower energy costs. * There is a blinking red light that adorns the building’s spire. Though one could assume its significance lies merely as a signal to lowflying aircraft, it actually blinks the word “Hollywoodâ€? in Morse Code. In fact, the light’s initial activation on April 6, 1956, was conducted by the granddaughter of Samuel Morse (for whom Morse Code is named), Leila. * This message has changed only once in the building’s 55-year history. This occurred in 1992, when the message was altered to read “Capitol 50,â€? reflecting the record compa-

ny’s 50th year in business. In September of this year, the normally white spire atop the building was lit blue at night, as part of “Blue September, a month raising awareness about the importance of early detection in preventing prostate cancer. * The first recording made in the Capitol Records Building was actually a series of instrumentals entitled “Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems of Color. Since then, the tower has been the artistic home of such musical icons as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Tina Turner, Steve Miller, Bonnie Raitt and the aforementioned “Chairman of the Board Frank Sinatra. * The 13 circular floors of the building sit on a square base. At the base’s southern face, one can view a large mural created by artist Richard Wyatt entitled “Hollywood Jazz. Among the fanciful portraits found there are titans of jazz and blues including Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole. The latter is even rumored to be responsible for suggesting the building’s singular shape. The past two decades haven’t been kind to the mural, as it has faded considerably. Yet it remains a beautiful testimony to our rich musical past.

Singer and songwriter Roger Miller, best known for his hit song “King of the Road, had a passion for music early, even though his family was poor. When he was in grade school, he spent his weekends picking cotton so he could save up enough money to buy a guitar. After eighth grade he quit school and went to work herding cattle and riding in rodeos.

You might be surprised to learn that the given name of iconic Apache leader Geronimo, Goyathlay, translates as “one who yawns. And the very name Apache isn’t what the tribe originally called itself; it’s word from the Zuni Indian language, and it means “enemy.

by Patricia L. Cook Eggs are a big seller all year long as one of the most popular breakfast foods, an essential ingredient for baking and more. But at Easter, they are at the top of the grocery list, the star of the show! • Eggs are rich in nutrients, containing almost every vitamin and mineral needed by humans. The protein of eggs is the standard by which other protein sources are compared. Large eggs contain approximately 6 grams of protein and 4.5 grams of fat, with about half of the fat being the healthier mono-unsaturated variety. Eggs only contain about 70 calories each. • While once vilified as being unhealthy and the cause of heart attacks because of their high cholesterol, the egg’s reputation has recently been redeemed. More doctors and nutritionists are backing away from the idea that eggs should be avoided. Eggs have so many good health benefits that studies now say most people are fine eating an egg a day. • To be sure, medical professionals are not recommending a three-egg omelet with sausage or bacon every day. If cholesterol is a concern, egg whites are fine since the yolk contains all of the cholesterol in an egg. The American Heart Association amended its egg-eating guidelines recently to say there is, “no longer a specific recommendation on the number of egg yolks a person may consume in a week.â€?
