Real Minnesota Haunts Winona)
Two priests were once feuding over who would be the head of the local church, and one of the men ended up being killed by the other in one of the halls on campus. There have been many reports from students that moaning is heard in this hall from the deceased priest, and one side of the hall is cold while the other is hot, when there is no heating and air conditioning in the building. Another report came from a girl who claimed that while brushing her teeth, blood came out of the faucet in place of water. Yet one more story tells of footsteps being heard leading to the bathroom, and when the chaser caught up with the footsteps in the bathroom, he was shocked to see blood appear in the toilet.
(St Cloud)
Before this skating rink was built in the 1970′s in a swamp, locals begged for it not to be built, as the area had sentimental value. The builder dismissed their claims and built anyway. Later, it was learned that in the early 1900′s, a young boy, Gilbert, lived in the area. Despite his mother’s warnings not to venture too close to the swamp, Gilbert was found by his father one day lying face down in the water. It is supposed that Gilbert’s ghost is responsible for many hauntings which include tampering with DJ equipment and turning on and off water faucets and lights. (Minneapolis) Once a Greyhound Bus Station, it has been said that several homeless people have died here. In particular, one teenage girl allegedly hanged herself in stall five of the women’s restroom. It has been said that if one enters the stall after dark, her ghost will appear. There have also been reports of equipment being thrown off the stage during musical shows. (Duluth) In this house, an elderly woman and her nurse were brutally murdered by the woman’s crazed lover. Now, it is said that the two haunt the house. It is said that eerie black, shadowy figures walking about the basement. Lights turning on and off have also been reported. There has even been one report of a piece of candy rolling back and forth across the dresser. (Brainerd) Sometime in the 1800′s two Indians were picking berries near the edge of town, when a group of angry white townspeople found them and dragged them back to the center of town. They were accused of raping and killing a young white girl and they were hanged outside the local tavern. A few years later, a white man confessed to raping and killing the young girl. The tavern still stands in downtown Brainerd and sometimes at night when the bar closes, people have reported hearing the cries of Indian people and the beating of drums.

Here’s A Spell to Stop Haunting Memories
When memories and bad dreams plague your life, and haunt your sleep, cast this spell on the night of a full moon. Use full moon jinx removing oil: five drops of camphor oil and five drops of peppermint oil. At 11.55 pm anoint a silver or white candle with the oil. Rub the oil with your fingertips down from the candle’s wick (representing the North Pole) to the center, and up from the base (representing the South Pole) to the center. Turn off all the lights in the room and light the candle at midnight while saying these words: “I am free from those who wish to harm my mind, body, or soul. Sit with the candle while it burns. At one o’clock in the morning, snuff out the candle. Information contained herein is all for fun with no guarantees

QUILTING (Continued) • One of the first quilting styles brought to America by immigrants was that of the elegant whole-cloth quilt. The beauty of these solid white or colored quilts comes from elaborate, closely quilted designs that bring texture and shadows to the quilt. • What’s the truth about quilting bees? As usual, the truth has been romanticized. Old books and stories tell of neighbors all being invited to a “quilting.” The women would quilt all day, perhaps taking turns around the frame while others cooked up the grand meal that would be served to the men folk that evening. Then it was a time for singing, dancing and courting among young people. • Although quilting bees did occur, it is hard to get the facts beyond the idealized image. Fiction written in the mid-19th century puts such parties as early as 1800, but it is more likely they began to occur later in the century. • Many a “quilting” session included only women helping a friend or neighbor finish a quilt. Such a gathering would be a great way for women to get together to socialize. Women could share family news, exchange recipes, give childrearing tips and in general, support each other. It has been said that next to church going, quilting bees were the primary contact for women. • In isolated regions, pioneer women coming together to quilt helped them overcome the loneliness that so many of them experienced. • Many quilters found inspiration from the one book that almost every 19th century family had it its possession, the Bible. There are many block patterns that have their roots in Biblical stories and themes – “Balm of Gilead” and “King Solomon’s Temple” to name a few. But one of the most popular was the “Rose of Sharon,” which used the colors red, green and white, and was frequently used on quilts given as gifts to brides. • The most essential piece of equipment for hand quilting was the quilting frame, which consisted of four pieces of wood. Two strips long enough to hold the shortest width of a quilt would have heavy cloth attached along the length. The ends of the quilt would be basted or pinned to this cloth. The other two pieces of wood would hold the first two apart so that the ends of the quilt could be rolled up, leaving a tight section for the quilters to do their stitching. When one section was completed, the quilt could be rolled again, making a new section available for quilting. • Some quilts, called sampler quilts, contained many different patterns. But sometimes, women quickly stitched a quilt block
together, not for future use in a sampler, but as a way to remember a pattern they’d seen on another quilt. • Some quilt patterns could be found in magazines as early as 1835, but they became more common by the mid-19th century. Magazines like “Godey’s Lady’s Book” tried to influence quilting styles of the day, encouraging women to try the more refined English patchwork and to use silk. It didn’t work. The majority of American women kept using the designs that they were accustomed to. • By 1890, catalogs offered quilt patterns. If a woman ordered her fabrics from Sears or Wards, she could choose a pattern from 800 designs and buy it for just 10 cents. “Diagrams of a Quilt, Sofa and Pincushion Patterns,” published by Ladies Art, also offered patterns for sale. • There are legends that claim that during the Civil War, quilting was used to help slaves escape through the Underground Railroad. A Log Cabin quilt hanging in a window with a black center for the chimney hole indicated a safe place. While they are intriguing, there is not much evidence to support these stories. • At the turn of the century, the Victorian Crazy Quilt became popular. Crazy quilts utilized multiple kinds of fabrics and stitching styles to create odd shapes that were pieced together. • In the 19th and early 20th centuries some quilters made use of an interesting material: cigar ribbons. Smoking cigars was a popular activity with many men at this time. To market themselves, many tobacco companies wrapped silk ribbons with their name sewn on them around bundles of their cigars. Women began collecting the colorful silk ribbons, and as a way to show off their collection, often sewed them into quilts. • In the mid-1920s, the colors of fabrics changed, so quilts changed. Many women stuck to the traditional designs, but executed them in the new pastel colors. New floral designs became popular as well. One quilting method used during the Great Depression was called “string quilting,” a technique where strips of cloth of varying widths were sewn together. This frugal method allowed women to use every scrap of fabric and waste almost nothing. • While the mid-20th century saw a decline in quilt making, in the 1960s, quilt making underwent a renaissance of sorts. Interest grew, and by the 1970s, the number of individual quilters and quilting guilds was on the rise. Today, new tools and methods are keeping quilting popular and making it easier than ever before.

TIP BITS (NewsUSA) - Whether you're preparing for your wedding, chronicling your travels or running a small business, a website or blog is the easiest way to share information with family, friends, professional contacts or customers. With advances in technology making it easier to build websites, millions of Americans are figuring out the basics of web design. Others are turning to professional designers for help. What makes a website's design successful? According to design experts, there are five keys to effective website design. These tips will help ensure that your website attracts visitors, encourages them to browse and -- if you're selling -entices customers to buy. 1. Minimalist design.Your website should look clean and uncluttered.
Minimalist design makes it easy for visitors to concentrate on the content. If a page has too many elements, visitors may become confused. This doesn't mean the design has to be boring -- a simple approach, focusing on a few key details, will make it look modern and stylish. 2. Fabulous photos. Avoid clichĂŠ or unprofessional photography and find images that say something genuine about you or your business. For affordable, reliable photography that makes it easier to be creative, try stock photography websites like Veer (www.veer.com), which has images for as little as $1, or for exceptional images, try Corbis Images (www.corbisimages.com), which has web-resolution images starting at $5. 3. Encourage action. Whether you want people to note your wedding details, view your travel photos or make a purchase, make sure that your "call to action" is clear and concise. Use short and snappy language, and large, boldly colored, clickable buttons that are in the top or middle of the page. 4. Focus on fonts. Bold fonts help visitors recognize the important messages and call-to-action on a page, while more common fonts are perfect for explaining the details. Veer.com has thousands of
unique fonts for just a few dollars. 5. Color counts. Color conveys meaning and encourages different reactions by visitors. Don't forget to make good use of white space -- the space between different elements of a design. Used well, it allows for easier scanning of your site. Design resources like Smashing magazine (www.smashingmagazine. com) or Daily Blog Tips (www. dailyblogtips.com) provide more indepth information to help solve specific challenges. By JoAnn Derson â–˛ This is a great recipe for deer repellent: Mix up hot peppers, garlic cloves, liquid soap and water. Spray your plants with the mixture. It will not hurt the plants, but it will keep the deer (and other animals) from eating them. â–˛ “Slow cookers make great servers for hot cider and also hot chocolate. You can keep them on warm for as long as you like, and there’s no need to reheat -- it’s always the right temperature.â€? -- C.B. in Minnesota â–˛ Here’s a great idea: When you clean
out your fish tank, use the water in your garden. Pour it on your plants or put in a watering can and use a little on each of your houseplants. â–˛ Store sour-cream and cottage-cheese containers upside-down. The contents will keep longer. This also works for larger yogurt containers. â–˛ “Let your dough rise in the oven -while it’s off, of course. It’s the perfect temperature, and it’s draft-free!â€? -- R.F. in Texas â–˛ “To keep small screws in place, like the ones in sunglasses or eyeglasses, dab the screw with clear nail polish. It gets into the cracks and keeps it in place, but you can unscrew it if you need to.â€? -S.L. in Colorado â–˛ Never, never, never serve roasted poultry right away. Always let it stand for 15 to 25 minutes after roasting to allow the juices to redistribute. You will have juicier meat, and the bird will be easier to carve. The Civilian Conservation Corps It was one of the most popular ccomponents of FDR’s New Deal, and the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps can still be seen all across America in parks, roads and buildings. • Few people today know about the Civilian k Conservation Corps (CCC), but Co during the Great Depression, it helped a lot of people earn money to support their families. It was a public work relief program for unemployed men, providing vocational training through the performance of work related to conservation and development of natural resources in the United States from 1933 to 1942. • As part of the New Deal legislation proposed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), the CCC was designed to aid relief of the unemployment resulting from the Great Depression while implementing a general natural resource conservation program on federal, state, county and municipal lands in every U.S. state. • Could this happen today? The legislation that created the CCC passed through Congress very quickly. Ten days after being introduced, the ECW Act was signed on March 31, 1933; on April 5, the War

Department corps area commanders were tasked with beginning enrollment. • The first CCC enrollee was chosen on April 7, 1933, and subsequent lists of unemployed men were supplied by state and local welfare and relief agencies for immediate enrollment. • CCC camps were located in the general area of particular conservation work to be performed and organized around a group of up to 200 civilian enrollees in a designated numbered “companyâ€? unit. • The camps were structured to have barracks, officers/technical staff quarters, a medical dispensary, a mess hall, a recreation hall, an educational building, lavatory and showers, technical/administrative offices, a tool room/blacksmith shop and motor pool garages. The enrollees were organized into work units called “sectionsâ€? of 25 men each, according to the barracks they lived in. • Enthusiasm for the program reigned supreme. By January 1934, the second year of the CCC program, 300,000 men were enrolled. In July 1934, this cap was increased by 50,000 to include men from droughtaffected states of the mid-west. The temporary camps had also transitioned from tents to wooden barracks. An education program was established emphasizing job training. • On June 28, 1937, the CCC was legally established, transferred from its original designation as the Emergency Conservation Work program. Funding was also extended for three more years, effective July 1, 1937. To be eligible, enrollees had to be U.S.

citizens, 18 to 26 years old and could not be regularly attending school or possessing full-time employment. The rules were eventually relaxed some to include veterans of World War II. • Although the CCC was probably the most popular New Deal program, it never became a permanent agency. The program was reduced in operations as the Depression waned, and employment opportunities improved. • The CCC died quietly. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, all federal programs were revised to emphasize the war effort. Most CCC work, except for wild land firefighting, was shifted onto U.S. military bases to help with construction. • Funding for the CCC ended in June 1942, formally ceasing active operation of the program.

Upon First Bite By Tresa Erickson
Ask someone to name characters associated with Halloween, and chances are vampires will come up. Portrayed as the undead in legends around the world, vampires add an element of horror to any Halloween event. The basic mythical image of vampires has evolved very little over time. Vampires may be pale and gaunt or ruddy and bloated, if they have just feasted upon the blood of another. Most are clad in the shroud they were buried in and have long hair, nails and teeth. Some are striking, even with blood dripping from the corners of their mouth. The ways of becoming a vampire vary in folklore from culture to culture. In some, evil spirits embody corpses, in particular those of witches and heretics and those with open, infected wounds. In others, animals jump over corpses, turning them into the undead. In many cultures, all it takes is the bite of a vampire to become one. Methods of preservation and detection also vary. Burying corpses
upside down with scythes and sickles is one way to prevent them from becoming vampires. This does not always work, however, and when cattle, sheep or people begin disappearing, searches may be conducted for vampires in graveyards. Signs of vampires include holes in the earth above graves and stallions balking at graves. To protect themselves in their search for vampires, people might wear garlic or a crucifix around their neck. In some cultures, wild roses and hawthorn plants are also thought to be good deterrents. In the event of being chased by a vampire, moving to holy ground or into running water may help, as vampires abhor these areas. Upon locating a vampire, there are several options for dealing with it. People might sever the vampire's tendons at the knees, stake them through the heart or mouth, decapitate them, burn them, shoot them, drown them or pin them to the ground to prevent them from rising. All of this should take place at dawn, of course, when vampires are inactive, or at the burial of corpses suspected of being vampires. Further measures include plying the grave with boiling water or with poppy seeds, millet, grain or sand, any of which the vampire would take the time to count. (Continued Pg. 10)
The ability to smell or taste something that isn’t really there is called Clairgustance. It’s those times when you catch a scent of perfume or the smell of something baking that no one else can smell. Along with it comes the memory of a loved one who has passed. When it happens to you, don’t ignore it. Someone on the other side is trying to connect with you. The smell of flowers that your mother grew, your uncles pipe smoke and his special brand of tobacco, the gingerbread cookies that your grandmother was famous for. You catch a whiff of the scent and along with it the memory of the person who has passed. This is their way of communicating with you. Sometimes you will hear people speaking of clairgustance as the ability to taste and clairscent as the ability to smell. Because these two things work so easily together and typically happen at the same time I use the term clairgustance interchangeably. Clairgustance is an extremely helpful gift to a psychic. Here is an example of how it works. You are having a reading done and one of your grandmothers comes through. There is a 50/50 chance that your grandmother has passed so you aren’t convinced. For some reason she isn’t coming forward with any more of a description. Then the psychic is given the smell of her gingerbread cookies and tells you this. Now you have the validation that your grandmother has come through. You remember all of those times you sat in her kitchen while she baked. And that’s how she wants you to remember her.

Call: Jon Davis / Independent Associate 763-438-6394 Should You Consult a Nutritionist? by Matilda Charles Have you ever consulted a nutritionist about your diet? It might not be a bad idea. I recently had an appointment with a nutritionist, and boy, did I learn a lot. As we age, many of us experience changes in smell and taste, tend to eat to kill hunger rather than for health and lose interest in food in general. Many of us don’t get enough protein because we’re stuck with the belief that it requires a big portion of meat. Not so. One of the most potent protein sources is a combination of beans and rice. And then there’s the matter of food density. As we age, our appetites and capacity aren’t what they used to be. If we fill up on food that has less nutritional value, we’re robbing our bodies of what we need for health. Portion sizes can be confusing. They’re smaller than you’d think. In many cases, a half-cup constitutes a portion. If weight control is a problem, overestimating the size of a portion can add to the difficulty of controlling those pounds. Fruit is our friend, although many of us get away from it as we age. And it apparently doesn’t matter how we get the fruit -- fresh, frozen, dried, canned or pureed like applesauce -- because the nutrients are still present.
Thank you for your interest and attention. Till next time, stay in touch with yourself, with your life, and with those loved ones who have moved on.

Frequently when someone books a reading with me in advance I will begin to get smells and tastes of things that don’t make any sense to me. I make a note of those things and when it happens again during the reading, I have validation of who has been attempting to communicate with me and why. It is always nice for my client to know that their loved one was anxiously anticipating their reading. Your loved ones want to communicate with you from the other side. They will take any opportunity they can to get your attention. I have never found anyone who does not possess this particular psychic gift. Think back to the times you’ve been sitting quietly and out of nowhere were given a quick scent of something from your past that reminds you of a loved one on the other side. This is their way of connecting to you. Their way of letting you know they haven’t left you. They are still here and they love you.

Variety in foods, said the nutritionist, is one of the best ways of staying healthy. A consultation with a nutritionist might be ones of the best things you can do for your health. He or she will be able to assess your age, activity level, diet limitations and weight and come up with a food plan to keep you in top shape. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Arthritis -- Breakthrough Relief For The Rest of Your Life (NewsUSA) - Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease in which joint cartilage wears away over time. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one-third of American adults suffer from chronic arthritis. The pain of osteoarthritis affects not only Americans' joints, but also their wallets. Thirty-three percent of American workers report that arthritis interferes with their ability to perform their job. In 2007, treating arthritis cost $128 billion -- $81 billion in direct expenses, like medical costs, and another $47
billion in lost wages and other indirect costs. "The pain comes and goes, prevents sleep, makes walking difficult, causes you to drop or spill things, and renders you unable to sign your name or write," writes Dr. Larry Lytle in his book, "Universal Healer: Osteoarthritis." "In short, it is the most common form of disability." Osteoarthritis cannot currently be cured, but effective non-drug treatments can safely improve the quality of life of millions of people. For example, the FDA has recently approved a low-level laser treatment, the QLaser, for treating osteoarthritis in the hands. The QLaser System helps the body reduce pain by stimulating the release of endorphins (the body's natural painkillers), while also helping the body reduce inflammation, increase circulation, help heal damaged cell membranes and boost cellular energy levels, resulting in less pain and faster healing. Keeping a device like the QLaser at home can help people address their osteoarthritis without turning to costly medical treatments or dangerous drugs. For more information about the QLaser and to receive a free copy of Dr. Lytle's book, "Universal Healer: Osteoarthritis," go to www.qlasersolutions.com and enter the code 5390 in the dropdown menu. To receive a free information packet by mail, call 1-800597-9231 and use the code 5390 when requested.

A N S W E R S Upon First Bite (Continued From Pg. 9) While vampires are largely considered fictitious creatures today, that wasn't the case in 18th-century southeastern Europe. Fiction turned to fact for many, leading to hundreds of vampire sightings, senseless executions and grave stakings. Upon digging up corpses, people often mistook the signs of decomposition for life and assumed vampires were real. They didn't realize that corpses naturally swell with gases as they decompose, ooze blood from various cavities and lose fluid in the skin and gums, making the nails and teeth appear longer. The hysteria continued until Empress Maria Theresa of Austria had her personal physician look into the matter and declared laws forbidding the

opening of graves and desecrating of corpses. Vampires continued to fascinate the public, becoming a dominant figure in the horror genre. In 1819, John Polidori published "The Vampyre," a short story that would serve as the foundation for works to come. The story revolves around the travels of two characters, a young man named Aubrey and a vampire named Lord Ruthven. The vampire brings harm to all he comes into contact with, including Aubrey, who not only loses the object of his affections, but his sanity and his sister, too. The story was an instant hit, motivating others to churn out their own vampire tales. In 1897, Bram Stoker published Dracula. Wildly popular, the book spawned a mass of works focused on vampires, including many of the ones we enjoy today. Vampires are a scream. Halloween just wouldn't be the same without them.

● Albert Einstein’s theories of relativity suggest that the passage of time is affected not only by acceleration (a person traveling at the speed of light, for instance, will age more slowly than someone who is stationary), but also by gravity. Scientists using ultra-precise atomic clocks have proved that people who experience a stronger gravitational pull age more quickly. What does this mean for you? If you spend your life precisely at sea level and your twin lives at 1 foot above sea level, over the course of a 79-year lifespan a difference of 90 billionths of a second will develop between your ages.

● The first state in the Union to declare Christmas an official legal holiday was Alabama, and it happened in 1836.
● An electronics shop in Seattle once advertised that it was selling stereos for “299 bananas.” As it turns out, 30-some odd customers showed up to take advantage of the special -- in a literal fashion. They each brought -- you guessed it -- 299 actual bananas. The local zoo ended up being the beneficiary of all the extra produce.
● If you’re in the mood to indulge yourself -- and have the means to do it -- you can vacation in the penthouse suite at Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France. At a rate of more than $35,000 per night, it’s one of the world’s most expensive hotel rooms.
● Pizza is one of the most popular foods around the world, but in other countries it doesn’t always look the way it does when you order out here in the United States. For instance, in India you’re likely to find toppings like pickled ginger, minced mutton and a kind of cottage cheese. Brazilians like green peas on their pizzas, Costa Ricans like coconut and Pakistanis favor curry. A popular pizza in Japan has potato, bacon and mayonnaise, while eel and squid also are common toppings.
● It was Polish-born British novelist Joseph Conrad who made the following sage observation: “Being a woman is a terribly difficult task since it consists principally in dealing with men.”
