Debt and (Back) Taxes
By Mark Vasto
Joe Louis’reign as heavyweight champion of the world spanned 11 years and 8 months, the longest in history. Unlike today’s boxers, where they’re lucky to get a bout a year, from 1937 to 1949, Louis defended his title 25 times -- another record. When he retired in 1949 he had a record of 61-1, most by way of knockout, to his credit ... but that very thing -- his credit -landed him in the biggest fight of his life. The opponent? The Internal Revenue Service. Louis had managed his millions poorly and owed years of back taxes to the government. As anyone who’s ever been audited knows, when the man calls you into the ring, even if you win you leave the arena battered, bloodied and scarred for life. Louis fought exhibition matches, but soon had little choice but to return to the professional ranks in order to crawl out from under his mountain of debt. Louis failed to regain the title in his first fight back against Ezzard Charles, but he managed to reel off a streak of seven wins against lightly regarded opponents. His final fight was a brutal and sad thumping at the hands of Rocky Marciano, a fight neither of them wanted, but needed. Marciano moved forward in his quest for the heavyweight crown -- Louis went back to watch an IRS agent take his portion of the fight’s purse. Louis never did recover financially, and in later years he relied on the generosity of men like Frank Sinatra to keep him afloat. When he died, he became the poster boy of “blowing it all away. Louis wasn’t the first athlete to do so, particularly in boxing, and he wasn’t the last. Leon Spinx -- who shouldn’t be uttered in the same breath as Louis -- now works as a janitor in an inner-city community center. A little further away from the poor house but an unequivocal disaster out of the ring, Evander Holyfield declared bankruptcy, despite having earned more than $250 million. Seems investing all of your money in real estate isn’t such a good idea when you spend it on $10 million homes, sire 11 children and amass more than $500,000 in lawn-care bills. Mike Tyson ... well, you already know that story. According to Sports Illustrated, 78 percent of all NFL players and about 60 percent of NBA players fall into bankruptcy within a few years of retirement. The names read like an all-star roster: Johnny Unitas, Lawrence Taylor, Michael Vick, Scottie Pippen ... but even Bjorn Borg and Dorothy Hamill (!) -- have fallen prey to debt and back taxes. Having the ability to play sports at a professional level is a gift ... apparently some people aren’t aware that gifts are subject to taxes. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

DECEMBER BABIES (continued) • French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel was a specialist in metal constructions, mostly bridges. He entered a competition soliciting designs for a monument to serve as the entrance gateway to the 1889 World’s Fair to be held in Paris. The 984-foot-tall (300-meter) Eiffel Tower received two million visitors that year alone. Criticized as an “eyesore,” it was intended to be torn down immediately after the conclusion of the fair. Instead, it became a popular tourist attraction, evolving into the national symbol of France. It remains the most visited paid monument in the world. The tallest building in Paris, it held the honor of world’s tallest structure until 1930, when New York City’s Chrysler Building grabbed the title. Although Gustave Eiffel is most famous for his tower, he was also the designer for the framework of the Statue of Liberty. • There’s much more to Jimmy Buffett than his “beach-bum” character. In addition to telling us “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” this Alabama native holds a degree in history and is a multi-engine licensed pilot. The 1946 Christmas Day baby has written three No. 1 best sellers and is one of only seven authors (including Hemingway and Steinbeck) who has reached the top of the New York Times Best Seller list in both fiction and non-fiction. Buffett owns two restaurant chains, Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise, along with the Margaritaville Beach Hotels and the Margaritaville clothing line. An avid Miami Dolphins fan, he penned new lyrics for the team’s song “Fins.” He also bought the rights to have Dolphins Stadium renamed Landshark Stadium for the 2009 season due to the popularity of his private label Landshark Lager beer. Throw in those eight gold and nine platinum albums, and you see this guy is no bum at all! • If you’ve been to a performance of the operas “La Boheme,” “Tosca” or “Madama Butterfly,” you’ve heard the musical compositions of Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini. Born December 22, 1858, this genius had his life cut short when his chronic sore throats were diagnosed as throat cancer, a result of chain-smoking cigars and cigarettes. • A bright future awaited Binger, Oklahoma High School’s class valedictorian of 1965. Born on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, December 7, in 1947, this young man was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and spent 16 years as baseball’s greatest catcher. Johnny Bench was Rookie of the Year in 1968, National League MVP in 1970 and 1972, World Series MVP in 1976, 14-time AllStar, and winner of 10 Gold Gloves. He has been a member of the Baseball Hall
of Fame since 1989 and has been named the 16th greatest player of all time by Sporting News. His success hasn’t come without consequences, however. Stress on his hip joints resulting in severe arthritis led Bench to hip replacement surgery in 2004, when he was fitted with a ceramic hip. • “Book ‘em, Dano,” was the catchphrase familiar to fans of the 1970s cop drama “Hawaii Five-O” and uttered by Detective Steve McGarrett. McGarrett was portrayed by actor Jack Lord, born John Joseph Patrick Ryan in Brooklyn in December of 1920. Lord had already had two careers before his show business fame. He started out as an engineer working in Persia, then came back to the states to run a Greenwich Village art school. His own paintings were displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Modern Museum of Art. In his late twenties, Lord made the switch to acting. James Bond movie fans will recognize him for his role in the very first James Bond film; he played a CIA agent in 1962’s “Dr. No.” • Every time you hold a one-dollar bill, you see the work of Gilbert Stuart, born on December 3, 1755, who has been dubbed the “Father of American Portraiture.” This Rhode Island-born artist trained in London and painted likenesses of more than 1,000 American political figures, including the first six U.S. Presidents. Portraits of George Washington hanging in schoolrooms everywhere have a white, cloudy unfinished area across the bottom. Stuart left this one unfinished at the time of his death. The original portrait can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian. • Denzel Washington is the son of a Pentecostal minister, who also worked at the local water department, and a hairdresser. This gifted actor holds a degree in journalism from Fordham University. He got his start in the hospital drama “St. Elsewhere” and appeared in the series for its entire six-year run. His son John plays professional football for the St. Louis Rams. He celebrates his birthday every December 28. • Those who remember the 1968 Summer Olympics might recall a spunky little 16-year-old gymnast named Cathy Rigby. Before she wrapped up her gymnastics career, she had garnered eight gold medals in various international events. Her next career move was to the Broadway stage. She prepared for it with seven years of voice and acting lessons. She is best known for her Broadway portrayal of Peter Pan, a perfect role for this little pixie. • Coincidentally, two members of the popular 1960s band The Monkees share the same birthday, although three years apart. Michael Nesmith was born on December 30, 1942, and singer Davy Jones came along in 1945.

A CLOSER LOOK AT A DECEMBER BABY HOWARD HUGHES Entrepreneur, inventor, engineer, movie producer and director, aviator and philanthropist — These all describe the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. Follow along as Tidbits takes a closer look at this unusual December baby, born in 1905, who went from center stage to recluse. • Howard Hughes was a high school dropout. However, his wealthy father, owner of Hughes Tool Company and patent holder for a drill bit for oil drilling rigs, took care of that. A hefty donation to Cal Tech soon had Howard enrolled there, and later at what is now Rice University, studying math and aeronautical engineering. When his father died just a few weeks after Hughes’ 18th birthday, he dropped out of Rice and took over the tool company. • At age 19, Hughes and his new bride moved to Hollywood to chase his dream of making movies. By the time he was 23, one of his films had won an Academy Award. His 1930s film “Hells Angels,” about World War I aviators, was the most expensive movie to date, costing $3.8 million to produce. It was while making this film that Hughes, who had taken his first flying lesson at age 14, earned his pilot’s license. • Hughes’ interest in aviation led him to branch out into aircraft design. In 1937, in his H-1 Racer, he set an airspeed record when he flew non-stop from Los Angeles to New York City in just under seven and a half hours with an average speed of 322 mph (518 km/ hr). The following year, he flew around the world in 91 hours, setting another record. • When the U.S. Government ordered a giant cargo plane from Hughes Aircraft during World War II, Hughes used $18 million of government funds and $7 million of his own money to build it. It was officially known as the Hughes H-4 Hercules and nicknamed The Spruce Goose, even though most of the plane was made of birch, with small amounts of maple, poplar, balsa and spruce. The craft was designed to hold 750 armed troops or two 30-ton tanks. It contained eight 3,000-horsepower engines and had a wingspan of nearly 320 feet (97.5 m.), 20 feet longer than a football field, making it the largest aircraft ever made from wood. The plane made only one flight, one mile long, on November 2, 1947, and remained in its own custom-built hangar for the next 33 years, costing $1 million per year to maintain. She now has a permanent home at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. • Hughes suffered from an

extreme obsessive-compulsive disorder most of his life, which led to bizarre behavior, including locking himself away for months at a time, living on chocolate bars. He spent the final years of his life as a recluse, living in his penthouses in the Bahamas and Mexico. He is thought to have died on a private jet en route to a Houston hospital. His appearance had so deteriorated that the FBI used his fingerprints to identify his body. At 6’4” (188 cm) tall, he was a mere skeleton at 90 lbs. (41 kg). In his later years, he had become addicted to painkillers and morphine, and X-rays of his body showed broken-off hypodermic needles embedded in his extremities. • The 2004 film “The Aviator” starred Leonardo DeCaprio as Hughes and earned 11 Oscar nominations.

Let it soak for an hour and then wipe the vinegar away, to see if it lifts the mineral deposit with it. You might also try mixing a paste of baking soda, hot water and vinegar and applying a thick layer over the stain with a cloth or nylon brush. Again, let it soak and wipe or rinse the paste away. Additionally, I’ve never tried this, but some people swear by club soda. Just dab it in the stain and let it soak for a while. Hanukkah is celebrated around the world for eight days and nights. As in many other celebrations of many other cultures, it’s about family gathering together and sharing food, blessings and good times. • It’s a celebration of restored freedom. Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees or Israelites over the Greek-Syrian ruler Antiochus about 2,200 years ago. • The holiday starts on the 25th of the month of Kislev. But because the Hebrew calendar is lunar rather than solar, it can fall anywhere from November to December on the standard calendar. • The date for Hanukkah this year is December 1 (sundown) to December 9. • Though Jews around the world commemorate Hanukkah, in Israel, Hanukkah is particularly festive. After all, to celebrate Hanukkah in Israel is to celebrate it where the story of the Maccabees took place. It’s a national holiday; schools are closed, menorahs are publicly displayed, and parties abound. • One of the most recognized symbols of Hanukkah, the chanukkiah is a special nine-branched candelabrum. It is different from the standard menorah, which holds seven candles and is the emblem of the State of Israel. • The chanukkiah or hanukkiyah symbolizes the time when the Maccabees wanted to rededicate their temple by lighting the “eternal flame,” but they only had enough consecrated oil to burn for one day. Miraculously, that little bit of oil lasted for eight days until more purified oil could be found. • Today, Jewish families light candles or burn oil in the chanukkiah for the eight days of Hanukkah, adding one candle

each day. The ninth candle, the center one, is used to light the others. • Each night of Hanukkah, an additional candle is placed in the chanukkiah from right to left, and then lit from left to right. On the last night, all the candles are lit. • A dreidel, or sivion, is a four-sided top that has a Hebrew letter on each side. Spinning the dreidel is a popular Hanukkah custom. • During Hanukkah, families eat latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly donuts) or other foods that are fried in oil to celebrate and commemorate the miracle of purified oil. • Gifts are also exchanged during the festival of Hanukkah. This tradition is adapted from the Christmas tradition of gift giving. • Hanukkah gelt, or money, is often distributed to children to enhance their enjoyment of the holiday. The amount is usually in small coins, although grandparents or other relatives may give larger sums as an official Hanukkah gift. • Unlike most spelling words you remember from school, Hanukkah can be correctly spelled many different ways, including Chanukah, Chanukkah and Hanukkah. • In North America especially, Hanukkah gained increased importance with many Jewish families in the latter half of the twentieth century, including large numbers of secular Jews who wanted a Jewish alternative to Christmas. Some Jews in North America and Israel now celebrate the environment along with Hanukkah, using the holiday’s “miracle of the oil” to reflect upon energy conservation.

■On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop an obelisk of white marble, completing the construction of the Washington Monument. A city law passed in 1910 restricted the height of new buildings to ensure that at 555 feet, the monument would remain the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. ■On Dec. 12, 1914, the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffers its worst percentage drop (24.39 percent) since it was first published in 1896. It was the first day of trading since the New York Stock Exchange reopened in November 1914 after being shut down due to the start of World War I earlier that year. ■On Dec. 9, 1921, an engineer at General Motors discovers that when he adds a compound called tetraethyl lead to gasoline, he eliminates the knocking that internal-combustion engines make when they run. In the 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency required that carmakers phase out leadcompatible engines. ■On Dec. 7, 1941, in an early-morning sneak attack, Japanese warplanes bomb the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and the United States enters World War II. Two hundred Japanese aircraft destroyed or damaged 18 U.S. ships and killed 2,400 Americans. ■On Dec. 10, 1967, soul legend Otis Redding dies in a plane crash near Madison, Wisc. He was 26. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay would be released in its “unfinished form several weeks later. The whistled verse was a placeholder for additional lyrics that Redding had yet to write. ■On Dec. 8, 1980, John Lennon is shot and killed by Mark David Chapman outside his apartment building in New York City. Later that evening, police took Chapman into custody peaceably after finding him reading a copy of “The Catcher in the Rye at the site of the shooting. ■On Dec. 17, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol is published. When Dickens’ father was thrown into debtors’ prison in 1824, 12-year-old Charles was sent to work in a factory. The miserable treatment of children and the institution of the debtors’ jail became topics of several of Dickens’ novels. ■On Dec. 18, 1886, the often-controversial baseball legend Ty Cobb is born in Narrows, Ga. In 1911, he led the league in eight offensive categories, including batting (.420), slugging percentage (.621), hits (248), doubles (47), triples (24), runs (147), RBI (144) and steals (83), and won the first American League MVP award. ■On Dec. 16, 1989, federal Judge Robert Vance is instantly killed by a powerful explosion after opening a package mailed to his house near Birmingham, Ala. In June 1991, a federal jury convicted Walter LeRoy Moody on charges related to the bombings and sentenced him to seven life terms plus 400 years in prison.

Fat or fiction? The skinny on the truth about fats
“Up to 30 percent of our daily calories should come from fat, with unsaturated fats making up the majority of that percentage, Berkow says. Unsaturated fats are the “good fats, and you can find them in plant-based (ARA) - Fat is the enemy - that’s the philosophy of oils such as olive or canola oil, salmon, tuna and many many Americans who are trying to lose excess weight. nuts such as almonds and walnuts. help you feel full, and avoid unhealthy snacking, until the next meal. In general, people should look for sources of unsaturated fat that offer other nutritional benefits as such as those that contain omega-3 or omega-6 fattty acids. Minimize your intake of saturated fats and avoid trans fats as much as possible. Federal dietary guidelines recommend about 65 grams of fat per day in a 2,000 calorie-per-day diet. If a food label says 20 percent daily value for fat, it means you will consume about 13 grams of fat in a single serving. Look for foods that constitute no more than 5 to 15 percent of your daily recommended fat intake. If you do indulge in a higher fat food at one meal, balance it with lower fat choices throughout the day. “To minimize bad fat in holiday foods choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products, read labels and keep total per-serving to less than 5 to 15 percent of the daily value, Berkow advises. “Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables with low-fat dips such as low-fat yogurt or humus. Dip your whole-grain bread in olive oil seasoned with garlic or basil, rather than in butter. Try new vegetables such as jicama, which is great for dipping. Bake with margarine rather than butter. Watch Susan Berkow discuss fats and labels on www. iftfoodfacts.org.

The Legend of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Montgomery Ward, the Chicago-based department-store chain, had been buying and giving away children’s coloring books as Christmas gifts for their customers for years, but in 1939 decided to create its own book to save money. The retailer gave the assignment to one of its employees, 34-year old copywriter Robert L. May, who penned the story of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Some 2.4 million copies were handed out that year.

May drew on the story “The Ugly Duckling” and also on his own background (he was often taunted as a child for being shy, small and frail) to create the story of the misfit reindeer. Several names were considered, including Rollo (too cheerful) and Reginald (too British), before May settled on Rudolph as his reindeer’s name. Concerns about Rudolph’s red nose (an image associated with drunkards) also were overcome. Written as a poem in the meter of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” May tested the story on his 4-year old daughter Barbara, who loved it. At about the same time that May was creating Rudolph, his wife died, leaving him deeply in debt with medical bills. However, he was able to persuade Montgomery Ward’s corporate president, Sewell Avery, to turn the copyright over

to him in January 1947, ensuring May’s financial security. He quit his copywriting job in 1951 but would later return to Montgomery Ward, where he worked until his retirement in 1971. May died in 1976. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” was printed commercially in 1947, and in 1948 a nine-minute cartoon of the story was shown in theaters. When May’s brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks, wrote the lyrics and melody for the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the Rudolph phenomenon was born. The song was recorded by Gene Autry in 1949 and shot to No. 1 on the charts, selling 2 million copies that year. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” would go on to become one of the best-selling Christmas songs of all time, second only to Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas.”
The Paper People Reach For!
May’s story of Rudolph differed from the one we know today, made famous by Johnny Marks’ song and the 1964 television special narrated by Burl Ives. In the original story, Rudolph was not related to Santa’s reindeer and did not live at the North Pole, but in an ordinary reindeer village. He was welladjusted and not regarded by his parents as a shameful embarrassment. He was discovered when Santa noticed a red glow coming from Rudolph’s room as he delivered presents to Rudolph’s house. Worried that a thickening fog would keep him from completing his Christmas Eve rounds, Santa tapped Rudolph to lead his reindeer team.

A study published in 2008 showed that the price of a pain medication had an effect on its efficacy. In the study people were given placebo pills, some at the regular price and some at a discounted price. Those who paid full price for the medication reported more relief than those who paid less. ************************ Thought for the Day: “Human beings are perhaps never more frightening than when they are convinced beyond doubt that they are right. -- Laurens Van der Post (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
If you’re frightened of bugs, you might not want to know the following tidbit: There are 10 quintillion insects alive on the planet.
Historians report that Napoleon Bonaparte, when he wasn’t busy conquering, enjoyed ice skating.
Consider your age, then consider the following tidbit: In the 1700s, the average human lifespan was about 30 years. Sobering thought, isn’t it?
If you consider surface area covered rather than population, the world’s largest city is in Inner Mongolia, where Hulunbuir covers more than 160,000 square miles.
If you look at the innards of a Boeing 747 airplane, you’ll find a whopping 171 miles of wiring.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you drink 22.7 gallons of coffee every year. The surprising thing about that statistic isn’t how much it is, though -- it’s how little. It seems that in the 1940s, Americans were drinking twice that amount of java.
â—? A woman in Tennessee was once arrested for biking while intoxicated -- and she was on a stationary bike at the gym at the time.
Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, Sony’s eReader -- it seems that everywhere you look these days people are reading onscreen. You may not realize, however, just how long digital books have been around. The first e-book was manually typed into a computer way back in 1971, when Michael S. Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg, chose the Declaration of Independence to be the first literature so digitized.
Those who study such things say that 1 percent of the world’s lizard species have no males. The females reproduce by parthenogenesis, which produces offspring that are clones of their mothers.

All kinds of famous folks were born during the month of December. This week, Tidbits brings you a few more details about these well-known people, past and present. • Harvey Firestone was 31 years old in 1899 when he founded the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, dealing in carriage tires. Originally he sold tires manufactured by others, but his concerns with quality led him to begin manufacturing them himself. Recognizing that the horseless carriage was the wave of the future, Firestone contacted Henry Ford, and in 1906, sold 2,000 sets of tires to the Ford Motor Company, contributing to Firestone’s first year of sales over $1 million. Their annual sales today top $4 billion. • Growing up with six sisters as a child of Russian Jewish immigrants in New York, Issur Danielovitch earned the money to buy milk and bread by peddling snacks to mill workers. His next job was delivering newspapers, and he went on to 40 more jobs before finally settling into his permanent career as an actor. After a name change to Kirk Douglas, he played roles ranging from Doc Holliday to Spartacus to General Patton to Vincent Van Gogh.
