Fat, Fatigued and In Hormonal Hell?
By Dr. Greg Fors, DC Board-certified Neurologist Most people think that they need to lose weight to get healthy $1< /LIW &KDLU RU 6FRRWHU U RU 6FRRWHU when in truth, people must get healthy first. Only then can their body ,QFOXGLQJ 6DOH ,WHPV properly burn off fat and maintain a healthy looking shape. One of the key body functions to be aware of for maintaining your health is the hormone or endocrine system. The endocrine system is an interconnected web of glands secreting various hormones that act like chemical messengers. These messages affect every organ, and control many of the body’s vital functions including growth, development, and the conversion of food into energy. When your endocrine system is out of balance even a subtle increase in one hormone can produce hormonal responses in other endocrine glands. This can cause unwanted symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, mood issues, even low libido or sex drive. Hormone imbalance can also cause your body to store excessive fat and stubbornly hold on to it making you ‘weight loss resistant’. Let’s concentrate on the hormones that are in charge of fat storage :H 6WRFN 7HQD and burning; these include insulin, cortisol, growth hormone, thyroxine, ,QFRQWLQHQFH 3URGXFWV adrenaline, testosterone and estrogen. of the primary hormonal imbalances today is low thyroid )UHH 6DPSOHV $YDLODEOH function. One The thyroid produces hormones that control cellular metabolism 1R ([SLUDWLRQ 0XVW SUHVHQW DW WLPH RI SXUFKDVH /LPLW 2QH &RXSRQ SHU XQLW and the conversion of calories into energy, when it’s not working properly ( 0RRUH /DNH 'U 0F .QLJKW 5G 1 you can end up with weight gain and fatigue. The usual approach to identifying low thyroid function is to measure a hormone from the )ULGOH\ 0DSOHZRRG pituitary gland called TSH as well as a hormone from the thyroid gland called T4. If the results are within the labs “normalâ€? range you are told ZZZ GD\PHGLFDOVWRUH FRP your thyroid is fine. If your TSH is high and/or your T4 levels are low, +RXUV :HG )UL Ć”6DW Ć”6XQ 0RQ 7XHV &ORVHG doctors many times will prescribe a thyroid hormone such as Synthroid. This is a simple approach to a what could be a complex syndrome and many people continue to suffer from their symptoms even when they are taking thyroid medication, even after their doctor tells them their thyroid tests are back “in the normal rangeâ€?. To find the root causes and lasting solutions for weight gain and fatigue associated with low thyroid function, doctors need to look much deeper with very specific laboratory testing. Let’s move on‌ Chronic stress is a major contributor to weight gain and fatigue, primarily through the action of the hormone Cortisol. This influential 2VERUQH 5Gă )ULGOH\ hormone binds to receptors in the hypothalamus of the brain, stimulating the urge to eat foods high in fat and/or sugar. Thus, it’s associated with FRPSOHWH OHQV increased appetite, abnormal cravings, and weight gain. Studies have IUDPH SDFNDJHV shown that elevated cortisol from stress causes a buildup in abdominal fat. Of the more than 2SHUDWHG 6LQFH 75,000 chemicals licensed for commercial use, more than 1,000 of them are specific endocrine disruptors. Have no doubt, the explosion of obesity and chronic fatigue in our society ZZZ )ULGOH\2SWLFDO FRP is more than just overeating. It has now been directly related to hormonal imbalances, much of which is triggered by our massive exposure to chemicals in foods, personal care, and home cleaning products. Specific laboratory testing can determine if these chemicals are leading to hormonal imbalance and your weight gain and fatigue. Not all doctors are trained in utilizing and properly interpreting these biomarkers. technique takes practice to master. If your squeegee is in tip-top shape, it should remove every bit of the cleaning solution from the glass without the need to follow up with a rag. However, until you master the technique, you may need to follow with a micro-fiber cloth to get every last bit of solution off the glass. That’s it! It will take a little practice to get really good at window washing, but when you do, you will feel so accomplished. By the way, this cleaning solution works great on lots of things: windows, mirrors, countertops, stovetops, shower doors, bathroom fixtures and ceramic tile. Because there is so very little detergent in it, there is no need to rise when using it for window washing. Caution: Because ammonia can remove wax and even some paints, take proper precaution. As with all cleaning solutions, label clearly and keep out of the reach of children. I calculate this solution costs about $.45 per gallon as compared to Windex which comes in at $20 for the same amount. Wow! Cheaper and better. P.S. It suddenly occurred to me that not all of you are as fortunate as I to live where it is summer-like all year round. ● On Feb. 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln is born in Hodgenville, Ky. As an adult, Lincoln’s sense of humor may have helped him hide recurring bouts of depression. He admitted to friends and colleagues that he suffered from intense melancholia and hypochondria most of his adult life. ● On Feb. 10, 1846, Brigham Young leaves Nauvoo, Ill., and begins leading 1,600 Mormons west across the frozen Mississippi River to a temporary refuge at Sugar Grove, Iowa. It was their first stop in a westward migration that eventually brought them to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. By fall nearly 12,000 Mormons had made the trek. ● On Feb. 18, 1959, Ray Charles records “What’d I Say,” which went on to become one of the greatest rhythm-and-blues records ever made. The call-and-response song was created to fill time at the end of a concert, and the crowd loved it. ● On Feb. 13, 1945, a series of Allied firebombing raids begins against the German city of Dresden, reducing the town to rubble and killing as many as 135,000 people. It was the most destructive bombing of the war. Little, if anything, was accomplished strategically, since the Germans were about to surrender. ● On Feb. 9, 1964, the Beatles are introduced to America on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” singing “All My Lovin’,” “Til There Was You” and “She Loves You.” It is estimated that 73 million Americans watched the show. ● On Feb. 8, 1983, gunmen steal the champion Irish racehorse Shergar from a stud farm owned by the Aga Khan in County Kildare, Ireland. The 5-year-old thoroughbred stallion was worth $13.5 million. Despite a highly publicized search by authorities, Shergar was never seen again and no ransom was paid. ● On Feb. 11, 1990, in a major upset, Buster Douglas defeats Mike Tyson, the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, in 10 rounds at a boxing match in Tokyo. The loss to Douglas was the beginning of a long, downward spiral for Tyson, which included jail time and boxing license revocation in Nevada. ● On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, authorizing the removal of all people from military areas. The military in turn defined the entire West Coast as a military area, and more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were relocated to remote internment camps around the country. ● On Feb. 14, 1929, in Chicago, gunmen in the suspected employment of organized crime boss Al Capone murder seven members of George “Bugs” Moran’s North Siders gang. The so-called St. Valentine’s Day Massacre motivated federal authorities to redouble their efforts to find evidence incriminating enough to take Capone off the streets. ● On Feb. 16, 1878, the Bland-Allison Act -- which provided for a return to the minting of silver coins -- becomes the law of the land. During the 19th century, money was backed by actual deposits of silver and gold, unlike today when the value of American money is essentially secured by faith in the stability of the government. chamber that pumps to all body parts. Its walls are about ½ inch (1.27 cm) thick. Your body contains about 75 trillion cells that receive blood from the heart. Only one body part, the cornea, receives no blood. The word “cardiac” means “related to the heart,” and has its origins in the Greek word for heart, kardia. There’s a difference between the hearts of men and women. The man’s is typically about 2 ounces (62 grams) heavier, but beats about eight fewer times per minute. When you have a good belly laugh, up to 20 percent more blood is pumped throughout your entire body. This can contribute to stress reduction, so laugh it up! The world’s first successful human heart transplant was completed in 1967 by South African physician Dr. Christiaan Barnard. The recipient Louis Washansky lived 18 days. Today, heart recipients live an average of 15 years. About 3,500 transplants are performed every year. After two years, about 80 percent of recipients are alive, and after five years, 73 percent of males and 67 percent of females still survive. Medical research has shown that samegender transplants have better results. The world’s longest-surviving heart transplant recipient lived 31 years after his surgery. Tony Huesman was 20 years old when viral pneumonia damaged his heart and he received a new one in 1978. He lived until 2009, when ironically, it was cancer that claimed his life. Kelly Perkins received her new heart in 1995 and has since climbed Mt. Fuji, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Matterhorn, Mt. Whitney and Argentina’s Cajon de Arenales.
HAVE A HEART! We all know that hearts are synonymous with Valentine’s Day. This week, Tidbits studies up on the human heart, the muscle that “takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’!” • Just a little larger than the size of your fist, your heart weighs between 7 and 15 ounces (200 to 425 g). The average heart beats about 72 times per minute, which is about 100,000 times a day. You do the math —That’s 3.6 million times every year. If you live 70 years, that’s 2.5 billion beats over the course of your lifetime. • Every day your heart pumps 2,000 gallons (7,570 l) of blood through your body’s 60,000 miles (96,560 km) of blood vessels. Turn on your kitchen faucet full blast for the next 45 years and that will equal the amount of blood pumped by your heart during your lifetime. That’s about 1.5 million gallons (5,678,118 l), which would fill about 200 tanker cars on a train. • About four weeks after conception, a fetus’ heart starts beating. Its heart rate is about 150 beats per minute, twice as fast as an adult’s. At 12 weeks, its heart is pumping 60 pints (28 l) of blood every day. • The heart cavity is made up of four parts, two upper chambers and two lower chambers. The upper compartments are called the right and left atria, and the lower chambers are the right and left ventricles. The body’s largest artery, the aorta, originates from the left ventricle, the largest and strongest

Walking Speed Predicts Life Expectancy by Matilda Charles
As we age, many of us find that our walking speed gets slower. Most of us assume that it’s a function of age and that it’s inevitable. It’s not. Researchers compared natural walking speed and life expectancy and came to some startling conclusions. They combined the results of nine different studies and followed 34,000 participants for up to 21 years. Each participant was age 65 or older with an average age of 73 years. Their natural walking speed, from a standing start, was measured and timed for short distances. The result of the studies: Those who naturally have an above-average walking speed will generally also have a longer-than-average life expectancy. Researchers were able to correlate current age with walking speed and predict the likely survival ages. For those participants age 75 and older, the information was especially on target.

Additionally, researchers realized that the 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to information was valuable enough to be used as a columnreply@gmail.com. standard assessment, such as blood pressure, heart rate, (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. weight, and general mobility tests. That’s not to say you should intentionally start walking faster. Your body picks its own natural speed. However, it wouldn’t hurt to have your doctor do a test so see how fast you normally walk. It can be done easily in a hallway of the doctor’s office by a nurse or practitioner. If you walk slower than average, your doctor could look for the reasons why, as walking speed is an indication of the overall state of your health. If a problem is identified and then remedied, your normal walking speed may increase -- which will put you in a category of those who have a longer life expectancy and better body functioning. Wear your sneakers to the doctor’s office! Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. CHEESE Milk’s leap toward immortality
Political liti l P Precedents d t ● There have been a few nortorious presidential siblings, like Billy Carter, Roger Clinton, Sam Houston Johnson, and “Big Don” Nixon, but none of them can stand out to the likes of Ulysses S Grant’s younger brother, Orvil. Orvil and Grant’s secretary of war, William Belknap. These two hit upong the idea of demanding kickbacks from franchising highly profitable trading posts on the western front.
Page 10
Back then soldiers were forced to purchase products and supplies from army trading posts. Grant and Belknap demanded money from the trading post owners which of course caused them to jack up their prices so high that General George Armstrong Custer complained. Custer even testified against the two scondrels during a Senate investigation, another reason why the administration of Uslyssis S. Grant is considered the most scandal ridden of all presidencies. ● On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton was killed during a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr. Ironically, in 1797, Hamilton had nearly dueled with
the future president James Monroe, but it was Aaron Burr who stepped in and stopped the confrontation. After his duel with Hamilton, Burr was charged with murder in New York and New Jersey. Neither case ever went to trial so Burr fled to South Carolina to let the smoke settle. He soon returned to Washington to finish out his term as vice president.
Bladensburg Dueling Ground (yes, they had places to set aside to get the job done). They paced off 10 feet and fired, no one was hit. So, they reloaded (good grief) and shot again. Again, no one was hit. This happened a 3rd, 4th and 5th times. On the 6th reload, Bynum’s pistol accidentally discharged. Now this was in violation of proper dueling ettiquette so one of Jennifer’s seconds was about to plug Bynum when Jennifer ordered ● I guess these things were fairly common him to stop. Jennifer then took careful and sometimes downright funny. aim at Bynum and shot. You guessed it, Jesse Bynum and Daniel Jennifer, he missed, so both dishonored “ahem” both congressmen in 1836, decided, gentlemen decided to call it a draw. after a shouting match, that they should make it a shooting match. ♼ Between 70 percent and 80 percent of the world’s fresh water is stored in glaciers, and all but 1 percent of the world’s glaciers are found in the Arctic or Antarctic.
♼ In the African nation of Somalia, a man is permitted to have as many as four wives -- but only if he can support them all.
♼ You might be surprised to learn that the earliest recorded reference to a vending machine dates back to the first century. It seems that a mathematician and engineer named Hero of Alexandria invented a mechanism that dispensed a fixed amount of holy water when a patron deposited a coin.
♼ If you have an aversion to bugs, you might not want to take a vacation in Borneo anytime soon. The world’s third largest island is home to a particular stick insect that, measuring in at 14 inches, is the longest insect in the world.
♼ It was legendary American crime novelist Rex Stout who made the following sage observation: “Nothing is more admirable than the fortitude with which millionaires tolerate the disadvantages of their wealth.â€?

• All of us have probably seen granite as a rock in science class, as tombstones in cemeteries, as countertops in kitchens and in many memorials worldwide. It can also be observed in natural land features such as Stone Mountain near Atlanta, Georgia. • Stone Mountain Park contains the largest mass of exposed granite on earth. A carving on one side of the large granite rock is of three Confederate heroes, President Jefferson Davis, Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewallâ€? Jackson. It is the biggest bas relief sculpture in the world. (Bas-relief sculptures are made by chipping away at slabs of rock.) • The Confederate figures measure 90 x 190 feet (27 x 58 m) and are surrounded by a carved surface that covers three acres (1.2 ha). It is recessed 42 feet (13 m) into the mountain. The idea for the memorial was hatched in 1909, but it was not dedicated until 1970. • Carver Gutzon Borglum started the project, but his work was later totally blasted from the mountain. He went on to his most famous work of art, Mount Rushmore.
