Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Thyroid Disorders Conquering Fatigue, Weight Gain, Chronic Pain & Brain Fog

However you label it, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (FMS/CFS) is caused by the loss of cellular energy. This loss of cell vitality takes place throughout the body especially in energy demanding tissues such as muscles, the digestive tract and the brain. This loss of cell vitality leads to pain and disability, plus research now shows rates of earlier death from preventable chronic diseases. The wide variety of symptoms with FMS/CFS gives witness to the fact that throughout the body and brain there is not enough energy to properly run and keep these tissues in good repair. This ‘gumming-up’ of your energy production (e.g. muscle, nerve, skin) primarily involves systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is when free radicals’ from poor diet and chemical exposure buildup in tissues and cause damage to cells, turning on inflammation. In virtually every patient I treat with chronic pain and fatigue, I find the indicators of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation elevated. Drugs prescribed for fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome such as Lyrica and Cymbalta cover up the symptoms but do nothing to treat these underlying metabolic and nutritional problems causing the damage. There is hope, and it can be conquered. I have personally witnessed this thousands of times, even with my own daughter! With unique functional laboratory tests now available, the nutritional needs and metabolic dysfunction in individuals with FMS/CFS can be determined and treated. A doctor must be trained in utilizing and properly interpreting these biomarkers to make them useful to the patient's recovery. What about hypothyroidism? It is becoming more known and understood that when diagnosing hypothyroidism just measuring a TSH and possibly a T4 level only catches about 17% of hypothyroid patients. To properly diagnose your thyroid at least eight different thyroid tests: TSH, Total T4, free T4, Total T-3, Free T3, Reverse T-3 and Thyroid Antibodies should be tested. This will also determine if you have central hypothyroidism, peripheral hypothyroidism, under conversion hypothyroidism, and Reverse T-3 syndrome. A very common problem is the inability to convert your T4 into the active T-3. This can even happen when an abnormal T4 level is being treated with Synthroid or levothyroxine. Many individuals do not adequately convert Synthroid or levothyroxine to the active T-3, thus leaving them still feeling the hypothyroid symptoms even while on medication. Again, this can be fixed by addressing and then correcting the underlying nutritional and metabolic issues. Then there is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the cause of 90% of hypothyroidism. Hashimoto’s is triggered when antibodies from your immune system attack your thyroid decreasing the thyroid’s hormone output causing hypothyroid symptoms. It frequently goes undiagnosed because proper thyroid antibody tests are not run. Additionally, even when diagnosed very few doctors know how to stop the immune system from killing off your thyroid. It is important to know that antibodies in Hashimoto's are commonly activated by food allergies, toxic chemicals and metals. Chronic bacterial or virus infections can also trigger the autoimmune response. To properly treat Hashimoto's disease these autoimmune triggers must be identified and removed by a doctor knowledgeable in functional medicine. The pattern of the moon’s rotation causes the same side to face Earth at all times. What we frequently call the “dark sideâ€? of the moon (that part we can’t see) should really be referred to as the “far side.â€? It has only been photographed from spacecraft. The surface is covered by a mantle made up of an 825mile-thick (1,330 km) layer of iron and magnesium-rich rock known as regolith. It’s been pounded by meteors, asteroids, and comets, which have created countless craters across its expanse. The widest craters are 140 miles (225 km) in diameter and are as deep as 15,000 ft. (4,500 m). There are mountains standing as high as 16,000 ft. (5,000 m). It’s estimated that the moon weighs about 81 quintillion tons (74 sextillion kg). • Although the moon looks round to us, it’s really egg-shaped. As we look at it, the smaller end of the egg is pointed toward us. It appears to be about the same size as the sun, but it’s actually 400 times smaller. Because the moon is 400 times closer to Earth than the sun is, the two appear about the same size. The moon is actually moving away from Earth about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) a year. • Gravity on the moon is just 1/6 that of Earth. This means if you weigh 120 lbs. (54.4 kg) on Earth, you weigh only 20 lbs. (9.1 kg) on the moon. And if you don’t feel like dieting, remember that because of gravitational effects, you weigh just a bit less when the moon is directly overhead. • The world first saw close-up TV pictures of the moon’s surface in 1964 when images were sent back by Ranger 7, the first U.S. space probe. • In May, 1961, President John F. Kennedy stated his goal in an address to Congress of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earthâ€? by the end of the 1960s. The first manned spacecraft to the moon was Apollo 8 in 1968, when Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders circled the moon 10 times before heading back to Earth. • The Apollo 11 crew made history in July, 1969 when they made the first landing. On July 20, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. There are very few Americans unfamiliar with his famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.â€? Armstrong later reported that what he actually said was, “that’s one small step for a man‌â€? The crew spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on

Most folks have never heard of Victoria Woodhull, but she made the pages of history books as the first woman to run for the office of the President of the United States. Let’s learn more about Victoria’s several other achievements. • Born into humble beginnings, Victoria’s parents ran a traveling medicine show, where her mother was a spiritualist and her father, the typical “snake oil salesman.” Victoria and her sister Tennie worked as clairvoyants and fortune tellers in the show. At age 14, Victoria contracted a serious illness and her parents consulted a 28-year-old doctor, Channing Woodhull, who would become Victoria’s husband just two months past her 15th birthday. • It soon became apparent that Dr. Woodhull was an alcoholic, morphine addict, and a womanizer, and Victoria went to work to keep them afloat. After two children, including one who was mentally disabled, Victoria divorced Woodhull 11 years later. • Victoria and Tennie were very successful as spiritual mediums and healers and made the move to New York City to capitalize on this success. Victoria married again, this time to James Blood, a former Union Army colonel in the Civil War, who had also been the first mayor of Lawrence, Kansas. The sisters’ most famous client was railroad millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt. In appreciation for their services, in 1870 Vanderbilt helped them open their own stock brokerage house on Wall Street, and the sisters became the first women stockbrokers in history. The company was immediately successful, patronized by wealthy widows and other women of means.

• With the proceeds from the brokerage, the women established their own newspaper Woodhull and Claflin’s Weekly, a publication with 20,000 subscribers, which focused on women’s rights and labor reform. The paper was the first to print the English version of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto. • In 1872, nearly 50 years before women had the right to vote, Victoria became the first female candidate for U.S. President, nominated by the Equal Rights Party. The Party chose former slave and abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass as her running mate, although he never acknowledged the nomination. Victoria’s platform included an eight-hour workday, a graduated income tax, social welfare programs, and women’s rights. As a divorced woman, she advocated new divorce laws that gave women the right to leave unbearable marriages. In her words, “I have an inalienable constitutional and natural right to love whom I may, to love as long or as short a period as I can, to change that love every day if I please!” • Just days before the Presidential election, Woodhull, her husband, and her sister were arrested on obscenity charges for running an exposé on popular Brooklyn preacher Henry Ward Beecher. Victoria spent election day in jail, and although she was acquitted of all charges, her reputation was destroyed and her businesses went bankrupt. • Woodhull divorced her second husband in 1876, and moved to England, where she married a wealthy banker, and published a magazine called The Humanitarian for nine years. She lived out the remainder of her days in England, dying in London in 1927.

a series of bright yellow arrows straight out of a Tex Avery cartoon. By 1924, just a year after Congress funded it, the line of giant concrete markers stretched from Rock Springs, Wyoming to Cleveland, Ohio. The next summer, it reached all the way to New York , and by 1929 it spanned the continent uninterrupted, the envy of postal systems worldwide. Radio and radar are, of course, infinitely less cool than a concrete "Yellow Brick Road" from sea to shining sea, but I think we all know how this story ends. New advances in communication and navigation technology made the big arrows obsolete, and the Commerce Department decommissioned the beacons in the 1940s. The steel towers were torn down and went to the war effort. But the hundreds of arrows remain. Their yellow paint is gone, their concrete cracks a little more with every winter frost, and no one crosses their path much, except coyotes and tumbleweeds. Giant Arrows

Every so often, usually in the vast deserts of the American Southwest, a hiker or a backpacker will run across something puzzling: a ginormous concrete arrow, as much as seventy feet in length, just sitting in the middle of scrub-covered nowhere. What are these giant arrows? Some kind of surveying mark? Landing beacons for flying saucers? Earth’s turn signals? No, it's…The Transcontinental Air Mail Route A re-creation of a 1920s map showing the route of airmail planes; the dots are intermediate stops along the course. On August 20, 1920, the United States opened its first coast-to-coast airmail delivery route, just 60 years after the Pony Express closed up shop. There were no good aviation charts in those days, so pilots had to eyeball their way across the country using landmarks. This meant that flying in bad weather was difficult, and night flying was just about impossible. The Postal Service solved the problem with the world’s first ground-based civilian navigation system: a series of lit beacons that would extend from New York to San Francisco. Every ten miles, pilots would pass a bright yellow concrete arrow. Each arrow would be surmounted by a 51-foot steel tower and lit by a million-candlepower rotating beacon. (A generator shed at the tail of each arrow powered the beacon). Now mail could get from the Atlantic to the Pacific not in a matter of weeks, but in just 30 hours or so. Even the dumbest of air mail pilots, it seems, could follow

A day on the moon from sunrise to sunrise is about 708 hours. It rotates on its axis at a speed of about 10 mph (16 km/hr). Compare this with Earth, which rotates at about 1,000 mph (1,609 km/hr). Yet both the moon and Earth complete their orbit in about the same amount of time.
