By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, DIBCN Board-certified Neurologist Migraines are nasty, intense throbbing pains in your head commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. A World Health Organization report described migraine as one of the four most disabling chronic medical disorders. Migraines are disabling but they can also take everything from you, your work, family life and even your own life. Individuals who suffer migraines are 2 to 3 times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack, a review of 21 different studies published in the American Journal of Medicine now confirms this connection. Most individuals do not see migraines as the serious systemic disorder that they are. Most sufferers and doctors focus only on symptomatic relief of the headaches; however, the headache is just one manifestation of this serious brain health problem. It is vital that individuals who suffer from migraines find a doctor who understands and treats the underlying brain health issues and not just suppress the pain with drugs. Recent studies have established the underlying cause of these disabling conditions; scientists call it glutamate mediated neuronal excitoxicity. Simply this means that a neurotransmitter or brain messenger called glutamate is at high enough levels to be toxic to the neurons in your brain. This causes too much excitement in the wrong place at the wrong time, leading to a migraine attack. Therefore, the symptoms we refer to as a migraine headache are the signs that the brain is suffering from this excitoxicity. Here’s what happens inside your brain during a migraine attack. Neurons experience low levels of ionic magnesium along with high levels of glutamate in the synapse causing them to become very excited. Just as in many other chronic brain health issues, there is also a reduced production of energy in the nerve cell. This all leads to an uncontrolled spreading wave of brain hyperactivity causing flashing lights, arterial dilation, pain, nausea and other symptoms. Interestingly, this exact same mechanism occurs in many other neurological disorders. This is why migraine sufferers are also more prone to anxiety, panic attacks, depression, seizures, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The good news is that there are simple, natural solutions to these killer headaches. You can not only prevent and stop migraines, but you can greatly reduce your risks for these other serious disorders as well. These natural solutions can also reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke! First understand that the devastating symptoms of a migraine are like the red check engine light on your dashboard telling you something’s wrong with your engine. Disconnecting or covering up the light with a piece of black tape will do nothing to determine the underlying reason the light is on. Neither are pain reducing drugs with their dangerous side-effects a good approach to curing or reducing these brain health issues. So, what’s to be done? First, you will need to determine your cellular levels of magnesium. Having a lab test known as a red blood cell magnesium done is the best way to determine if you have a magnesium deficiency at the cell level. Different factors can affect brain levels of magnesium such as diets high in sugar and low in magnesium. Intestinal mal-absorption can also affect levels of this and other vital minerals for your body’s health. In dealing with magnesium deficiency it is important to know that many individuals are sensitive to magnesium, and thus can develop digestive symptoms from it. Therefore, just taking over the counter magnesium supplement may not be enough. These persons may need to use a specialized form of magnesium to optimize absorption and thus, uptake into the brain cell. Next, you then need to greatly reduce your blood levels of glutamates along with reducing inflammation. Again, avoiding harsh drugs can also avoid harmful long-term side effects. Equally important is that any hidden food allergies should be identified through proper laboratory tests. Food allergies can lead to increased inflammation and glutamate levels. These issues and more will all be discussed in detail at my upcoming FREE seminars on Migraines and Tension Headaches. I will discuss natural solutions in overcoming them, including acupuncture, herbs, nutrition and diet. Those attending will also be afforded an individual consultation to discuss their headache issues personally with me. Seminars will be held at 7 PM on Wednesday, January 22 and Monday, January 27, at the Pain and Brain Healing Center. Please call 763-862-7100 to reserve a seat today and get directions. • Albert Einstein was responsible for “the world’s most famous equation,â€? E=mc2, the formula for massenergy equivalence. Yet this German-born physicist failed his first college entrance exam, passing only the math and science sections, forcing him to attend a secondary school before retaking and passing the test a year later. Einstein’s 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect. He came to America on a visit in 1933, and made the decision to stay when new German laws prohibited him from teaching at any university there. He renounced his German citizenship, took a teaching position at Princeton, and became a U.S. citizen in 1940. Regarding the topic of genius, he once said, “The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.â€? • Regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all times, Isaac Newton almost became a farmer. His mother urged him to follow in his late father’s footsteps on the family farm, but this genius disliked the profession intensely. He attended Cambridge University, studying mathematics, physics, and astronomy. We’re most familiar with his theory of gravitation, developed after watching an apple fall from a tree. Most folks have also heard of his law of inertia that states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion. Another familiar Newton law is that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Do nuts make you fat?
Short answer: No As much as 75% of a nut is fat. But eating fat doesn't necessarily make you fat. The bigger factor leading to weight gain is portionsize. Luckily, nuts are loaded with healthy fats that keep you full. They're also a good source of protein and fiber. One study even found that whole almonds have 20% less calories than previously thought because a lot of the fat is excreted from the body. Are all wheat breads better for you than white bread? Short answer: No Not all wheat breads are created equal. Wheat breads that contain all parts of the grain kernel, including the nutrient-rich germ and fiber-dense bran, must be labeled "whole grain" or "whole wheat." Some wheat breads are just white bread with a little bit of caramel coloring to make the bread appear healthier, according to Reader's Digest.

The Definitive Answer To 20 Of Your Biggest Health Questions Does olive oil prevent heart disease?
Short answer: Yes The health benefits of olive oil come from the presence of polyphenols, antioxidants that reduce the risk of heart diseases and cancers. But to get these healthy compounds, consumers should buy good-quality, fresh "extra-virgin" olive oil, which has the highest polyphenol content. Most commercially available olive oils have low levels of polyphenols associated with poor harvesting methods, improper storage, and heavy processing.
Do cough syrups work?
Short answer: No In 2006, the nation's chest physicians agreed that the majority of over-the-counter cough medicines don't actually work. These colorful syrups typically contain doses of codeine and dextromethorphan that are too small to be effective. Only cough suppressants that contain older antihistamines seem to relieve coughs. That includes brompheniramine, an active ingredient in Dimetapp.
Does sugar cause hyperactivity?
Short answer: No Following a review of 23 studies, a 1996 report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that sugar "does not affect the behavior or cognitive performance of children." The age-old myth that kids misbehave when they eat large amounts of candy, cookies, and other junk food, could be related to the type of events where these foods are typically served. For example, kids are more wound-up at birthday parties and during Halloween when sweet treats tend to flow freely.
Do sugary soft drinks lead to diabetes?
Short answer: Yes The majority of health research is stacked against sugar-sweetened soda. A large 2004 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that women who drank one or more sugary drinks per day increased their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 83% compared to those who consumed less than one of these beverages per month.

Does coffee cause cancer?
Short answer: No Coffee got a bad rap in the 1980s when a study linked drinking coffee to pancreatic cancer. The preliminary report was later debunked. More recently, health studies have swung in favor of the caffeinated beverage. Coffee has been linked to a lower risk oftype 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, liver cancer, and even suicide.
Do eggs raise cholesterol levels?
Short answer: No Although egg yolks are a major source of cholesterol — a waxy substance that resembles fat — researchers have learned that saturated fat has more of an impact on cholesterol in your blood than eating foods that contain cholesterol. "Healthy individuals with normal blood cholesterol levels should now feel free to enjoy foods like eggs in their diet every day," the lead researcher from a 25-year University of Arizona study on cholesterol concluded.
Can you drink too much water?
Short answer: Yes It is very rare for someone to die from drinking too much water, but it can happen. Overhydrating is most common among elite athletes. Drinking an excess of water, called water intoxication, dilutes the concentration of sodium in the blood leading to a condition known as hyponatremia. The symptoms of hyponatremia can range from nausea and confusion to seizures and even death in severe cases. To avoid this, drink fluids with electrolytes during extreme exercise events.
Do whitening toothpastes whiten teeth more than regular toothpastes?
Short answer: No Whitening toothpastes usually contain peroxides and other strong abrasives that might make your teeth appear whiter by removing stains. Unlike at-home whitening strips and gels that contain bleach, these toothpastes do not actually change the color of your teeth.
Is it safe to microwave food in plastic containers?
Short answer: Yes But the plastic container should display the words "microwave safe." This means that the Food and Drug Administration has tested the container to make sure no chemicals used to make the plastic leech into foods during microwaving. If chemicals do seep out into food, the amounts are tiny and not dangerous to our health. As a general guideline, plastic grocery bags as well as most plastic tubs that hold margarine, yogurt, cream cheese, and condiments are not microwave safe.
Can watching TV ruin your eyesight?
Short answer: No Watching TV will not destroy your rods and cones as the outdated myth suggests. Before the 1950s, TVs emitted radiation that could increase an individual's risk of eye problems after excessive TV viewing. Modern TVs have special shielding that blocks these harmful emissions.
Is red wine better for you than white wine?
Short answer: Yes Red wine contains much more resveratrol than white wine, an antioxidant found in the skin of grapes that has beenshown to fight off diseases associated with aging.
Is bottled water better for you than tap water?
Short answer: No Bottled water is no safer or purer than tap water, although it is substantially more expensive. A recent study by Glasgow University in the U.K. found that bottled water is actually more likely to be contaminated than water from your faucet because it is less well-regulated. Bottled water and tap water typically come from the same sources — natural springs, lakes, and aquifers. While public water supplies are tested for contaminants every day, makers of bottled water are only required to test for specific contaminants every week, month, or year.

It's more important that you choose "broadspectrum" sunscreen, meaning it protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Sunbathers also need to apply a generous amount of sunscreen in order to get the full benefit of the SPF.
Can a hot tub make me sick?
Short answer: Yes Hot tubs — especially ones in spas, hotels, and gyms — are perfect breeding grounds for germs. The water is not hot enough to kill bacteria, but is just the right temperature to make microbes grow even faster. Even though hot tubs are treated with chlorine, the heat causes the disinfectant to break down faster than it would in regular pools. The most common hot tub infection is pseudomonas folliculitis, which causes red, itchy bumps. A more dangerous side-effect of soaking in a dirty Jacuzzi is a form of pneumonia known as Legionnaire's disease. This is what reportedly sickened more than 100 people at the Playboy Mansion back in 2011.
Can yogurt ease digestive problems?
Short answer: Yes Our digestive tract is filled with microorganisms — some good and some bad. Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria, generically called probiotics, that helps maintain a healthy balance. Probiotics can relieve several gastrointestinal problems, including constipation and diarrhea. Certain brands of yogurts, like Activa by Dannon, are marketed exclusively to treat tummy issues.

AUTOMOTIVE PROS
If God wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates. ~Jay Leno~ The problem with political jokes is they get elected. ~Henry Cate, VII~ If we got one-tenth of what was promised to us in these State of the Union speeches, there wouldn't be any inducement to go to heaven. ~Will Rogers~ Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river. ~Nikita Khrushchev~

Why pay money to have your family tree traced; go into politics and your opponents will do it for you. ~Author unknown~ Politicians are people who, when they see light at the end of the tunnel, go out and buy some more tunnel. ~John Quinton~ Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from Scan and Crack Up the rich, by promising to protect each from the other. ~Oscar Ameringer~ I offer my opponents a bargain: if they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them. ~Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952~

● Those who study such things say that couples in a romantic relationship actually have heart rates that are in sync with each other.
● During World War I, the United States acquired its first “war dog.” The pit bull was found wandering around Yale Field in New Haven, Conn., by soldiers in training. One particular soldier, Cpl. Robert Conroy, became close to the dog and refused to leave Stubby behind; when Conroy was shipped out, he hid the dog on board. Stubby served overseas for 18 months and saw action in 17 battles. On more than one occasion he sniffed out surprise attacks, saving his regiment. He was known for locating wounded soldiers on the field, and he even once caught a German spy. He was the most decorated dog of the Great War, and he was promoted to sergeant for his combat service -- the only dog to be so honored. After the war, Sgt. Stubby was hailed as a hero; he led parades and met three presidents. He even has his very own brick at the World War I Memorial. It reads, “Sergeant Stubby, Hero Dog of WWI, a Brave Stray.”
● The chief translator for the European Parliament is named Ioannis Ikonomou. He is fluent in 32 languages -- and still learning.
● Even though the human brain makes up only 2 percent of the body’s mass, it consumes 20 percent of the body’s calories and oxygen.
● It was noted American writer and essayist Flannery O’Connor who made the following sage observation: “Truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.”
● If you are planning a trip to Hawaii, you might want to go to the Sea Life Park on Oahu. There you can see a rare creature: the wolphin. This cross between a killer whale and a bottlenosed dolphin also reportedly exists in the wild, but I imagine they’re a bit more difficult to find.
● In the U.S. in 1900, imported perfume was taxed at a higher rate than imported opium.
● Historians claim that President John Quincy Adams kept a pet alligator in a White House bathroom. He reportedly was amused when unsuspecting guests had to make a trip to the loo.
● The average horse will produce 10 gallons of saliva every day.
● If you could go back in time and sample a beer from the 1700s, you would find it to be significantly stronger than similar libations that are served today. The higher alcohol content helped the brew survive the long voyage from England to colonial India.

The simple definition of genius is someone with “exception intellectual or creative ability.” That can certainly be said of the individuals Tidbits examines this week. • What constitutes a genius IQ level? Intelligence tests are based on one devised by French psychologist Alfred Binet in the 1950s. Average intelligence falls between a score of 85 and 114. It’s estimated that about half of the world’s population has an IQ between 90 and 110. A score of about 160 is considered to be a genius. About 1% of all the people in the world are above 136. It’s believed that Einstein’s IQ was 160, while Mozart’s is estimated at 165. • Considered the world’s first real child prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began studying violin and harpsichord at age 3. At 5, he was performing at the University of Salzburg and at Vienna’s Imperial Court the following year. He was 6 when he began composing minuets and other short pieces. His first symphony came along at age 8 and an opera at 12. Mozart received all of his education from his father and never attended a school. He frequently experienced anxiety, loneliness, and sadness, and occasionally exhibited the symptoms of Tourette’s Syndrome and bipolarism. Although he only lived to age 35, he composed more than 600 pieces, including 68 symphonies, 27 piano concertos, horn concertos, violin sonatas, and many volumes of string quartet music.
