By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, DIBCN Board-certified Neurologist Migraines are nasty, intense throbbing pains in your head commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. A World Health Organization report described migraine as one of the four most disabling chronic medical disorders. Migraines are disabling but they can also take everything from you, your work, family life and even your own life. Individuals who suffer migraines are 2 to 3 times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack, a review of 21 different studies published in the American Journal of Medicine now confirms this connection. Most individuals do not see migraines as the serious systemic disorder that they are. Most sufferers and doctors focus only on symptomatic relief of the headaches; however, the headache is just one manifestation of this serious brain health problem. It is vital that individuals who suffer from migraines find a doctor who understands and treats the underlying brain health issues and not just suppress the pain with drugs. Recent studies have established the underlying cause of these disabling conditions; scientists call it glutamate mediated neuronal excitoxicity. Simply this means that a neurotransmitter or brain messenger called glutamate is at high enough levels to be toxic to the neurons in your brain. This causes too much excitement in the wrong place at the wrong time, leading to a migraine attack. Therefore, the symptoms we refer to as a migraine headache are the signs that the brain is suffering from this excitoxicity. Here’s what happens inside your brain during a migraine attack. Neurons experience low levels of ionic magnesium along with high levels of glutamate in the synapse causing them to become very excited. Just as in many other chronic brain health issues, there is also a reduced production of energy in the nerve cell. This all leads to an uncontrolled spreading wave of brain hyperactivity causing flashing lights, arterial dilation, pain, nausea and other symptoms. Interestingly, this exact same mechanism occurs in many other neurological disorders. This is why migraine sufferers are also more prone to anxiety, panic attacks, depression, seizures, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The good news is that there are simple, natural solutions to these killer headaches. You can not only prevent and stop migraines, but you can greatly reduce your risks for these other serious disorders as well. These natural solutions can also reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke! First understand that the devastating symptoms of a migraine are like the red check engine light on your dashboard telling you something’s wrong with your engine. Disconnecting or covering up the light with a piece of black tape will do nothing to determine the underlying reason the light is on. Neither are pain reducing drugs with their dangerous side-effects a good approach to curing or reducing these brain health issues. So, what’s to be done? First, you will need to determine your cellular levels of magnesium. Having a lab test known as a red blood cell magnesium done is the best way to determine if you have a magnesium deficiency at the cell level. Different factors can affect brain levels of magnesium such as diets high in sugar and low in magnesium. Intestinal mal-absorption can also affect levels of this and other vital minerals for your body’s health. In dealing with magnesium deficiency it is important to know that many individuals are sensitive to magnesium, and thus can develop digestive symptoms from it. Therefore, just taking over the counter magnesium supplement may not be enough. These persons may need to use a specialized form of magnesium to optimize absorption and thus, uptake into the brain cell. ● During World War I, the United States acquired its first “war dog.” The pit bull was found wandering around Yale Field in New Haven, Conn., by soldiers in training. One particular soldier, Cpl. Robert Conroy, became close to the dog and refused to leave Stubby behind; when Conroy was shipped out, he hid the dog on board. Stubby served overseas for 18 months and saw action in 17 battles. On more than one occasion he sniffed out surprise attacks, saving his regiment. He was known for locating wounded soldiers on the field, and he even once caught a German spy. He was the most decorated dog of the Great War, and he was promoted to sergeant for his combat service -- the only dog to be so honored. After the war, Sgt. Stubby was hailed as a hero; he led parades and met three presidents. He even has his very own brick at the World War I Memorial. It reads, “Sergeant Stubby, Hero Dog of WWI, a Brave Stray.”

The simple definition of genius is someone with “exception intellectual or creative ability.” That can certainly be said of the individuals Tidbits examines this week. • What constitutes a genius IQ level? Intelligence tests are based on one devised by French psychologist Alfred Binet in the 1950s. Average intelligence falls between a score of 85 and 114. It’s estimated that about half of the world’s population has an IQ between 90 and 110. A score of about 160 is considered to be a genius. About 1% of all the people in the world are above 136. It’s believed that Einstein’s IQ was 160, while Mozart’s is estimated at 165. • Considered the world’s first real child prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began studying violin and harpsichord at age 3. At 5, he was performing at the University of Salzburg and at Vienna’s Imperial Court the following year. He was 6 when he began composing minuets and other short pieces. His first symphony came along at age 8 and an opera at 12. Mozart received all of his education from his father and never attended a school. He frequently experienced anxiety, loneliness, and sadness, and occasionally exhibited the symptoms of Tourette’s Syndrome and bipolarism. Although he only lived to age 35, he composed more than 600 pieces, including 68 symphonies, 27 piano concertos, horn concertos, violin sonatas, and many volumes of string quartet music.
