One out of two Americans either have early diabetes or full-blown type II diabetes: Good chances you are one of them. And, this holiday season, with its holiday treats of sugar and carbs, only increase your chances. This devastating epidemic can take from you, or a loved one, legs, kidneys, eyes, heart and/or brain. Surprisingly, new evidence is now showing that you do not have to wait to be fully diabetic to have these things stripped from your life. Why not do something about it right now? You Do Not Have to Wait to Be Diabetic to Be Damaged: It turns out during the silent “prediabetic” phase spikes in glucose and insulin after eating are causing damage to your body. You don’t realize this because your yearly physical is only looking at your fasting blood glucose. When you are prediabetic most of the time your glucose will return to normal with a 12 hour fast before your blood draw. Furthermore, on this yearly physical, your doctor is not measuring your insulin levels or your hemoglobin A1c which will show your pre-diabetes well before an abnormal fasting glucose will. Because of this you remain ignorant of the damage being done to your body. What Is Your Chance of Being Prediabetic? According to the U.S. CDC more than 1 in 3, numbering over 86 million Americans, have the early stages of diabetes type II or prediabetes. Alarmingly, 9 out of 10 of these people do not realize they have this condition. Worse yet those who are diagnosed do not take it seriously enough because the doctor told him it’s “only” pre- diabetes. Really there is no such thing as pre-diabetes, truly there is only early stages of diabetes or full-blown diabetes. The Signs of Early Diabetes or “Prediabetes”: The cause of type II diabetes is insulin resistance. This is where your cells are no longer hearing the signal of insulin to take in the blood glucose. Therefore, your blood glucose and insulin levels rise after eating causing damage to your cells. One of the first signs of insulin resistance is easy weight gain difficult weight loss. Why? Because insulin is the hormone that tells your body to store fat and not to break down fat. Another early sign of insulin resistance or pre-diabetes is high blood pressure and/or elevated blood fats such as triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Both factors will lead to heart disease and stroke. Also, numbness, tingling and pain in your legs are often a sign of pre-diabetes and the possible eventual loss of function in your legs. This happens even before being diagnosed with diabetes, because post meal glucose spikes are damaging the nerves in your legs. Because prediabetes has already damaged the nerves in nearly half of those newly diagnosed with diabetes, it is vital for anyone over the age of 35 to be properly tested for pre-diabetes and early signs of nerve damage. I can’t emphasize this enough. If you think you may have prediabetes, or have been diagnosed with diabetes, you need to see a doctor who will look carefully for the early signs of peripheral neuropathy. Furthermore, 30% of you with prediabetes will develop full-blown type II diabetes within five years if something doesn’t change. Therefore, you need to see a doctor who knows how to test for the earliest indications for pre-diabetes and then knows how to reverse it through a safe natural approach. That way you do not have to worry about continually gaining weight and losing your eyes, kidneys, heart or brain to diabetes. Pre-diabetes and Type II Diabetes - What Won’t Fix This: The pharmaceutical industry would have you believe that controlling your blood sugar with drugs or insulin will protect you from organ and nerve damage and early death. And, that type II diabetes is not reversible. Don’t you believe it! A new study published by Mayo Researchers found that the use of drugs to control your blood glucose levels showed no significant benefit in reducing the risk of dialysis, kidney transplant, renal death, blindness, or neuropathy. What this Mayo Study and the famous Accord Study is telling us, the well-intentioned efforts of your conventional doctor’s intervention with prescription drugs to control your blood glucose levels, will not save you from the damage of diabetes! Worse Yet, Alzheimer’s Is Now Being Called Type III Diabetes: Yes, that’s right! New research is showing that one of the primary driving forces behind the new Alzheimer’s and dementia epidemic is insulin resistance of the brain. This is happening even in the stages of prediabetes and of course in full-blown diabetes. What are the primary symptoms: elevated blood glucose levels after meals with, brain fog, decreased cognitive function, depression, anxiety, insomnia all signs of brain inflammation driven by insulin resistance. Do you want to keep your brain, your eyesight, your legs, kidney function, heart health? Are you going to allow yourself to be a victim of this devastating epidemic! Find out if you have pre-diabetes and what you can do to reverse it. Or, possibly you already have type II diabetes and you want to reverse this before it’s too late. Join me Dr. Greg Fors at one of my FREE “Reversing Your Pre-diabetes or Diabetes” Health Workshops—Monday, January 29th or Wednesday, January 30th at 7 PM at the Pain and Brain Healing Center 1400 131st Ave NE Blaine. LARGEST CITIES (cont’d)

• About 100,000 of the city’s 12.3 million residents visit Moscow’s Gorky Park on a typical Saturday. Russia’s first McDonald’s restaurant opened in Moscow in 1990, and 30,000 people stood for hours to sample their first burger from the fast food chain. • New York City has been the United States’ largest city since 1790. It’s America’s most densely-populated city, and 1 in every 38 Americans live there, about 5.7% of the nation’s population. One out of every 21 residents is a millionaire. Close to 20 million people live in the metro area. Manhattan was purchased from the Native Americans in 1626 for about $1,000 in today’s money. A Dutch trading post was founded there in 1624, and was named New Amsterdam. When the city came under British control 40 years later, King Charles II of England gave the lands to his brother, the Duke of York, who renamed the city. (The Duke would later become King James II.) In 1789, when the population was 28,000, New York City became the first nation’s capital. George Washington took his oath of office on the balcony of the City Hall, but its capital status would endure just

Page 2

until 1790, when Philadelphia took over the status. • New York City is the most linguistically diverse city in the world, and about half of the population speaks a language other than English in the home. • Cairo, Egypt, the ninth most populous city, grew up around the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, which is now contained within the modern city. The Giza Pyramid complex, which includes the three Great Pyramids and the Great Sphinx, is nearby. Modern Cairo was founded in the year 969, and is home to the world’s second-oldest university, Al-Azhar University, established in 970. • The world’s fifth largest city has more than 21 million people. Sao Paulo, Brazil, is the largest city in South America, and the largest Portuguesespeaking city in the world. Jesuit priests founded the village as a mission on top of a plateau between two rivers in 1554, and named it after the Apostle Paul. The first church building was a hut covered with palm leaves. The village remained in extreme poverty until gold was discovered in the early 1700s. Today’s Sao Paulo has absolutely no billboards, due to their Clean City law passed in 2006 which bans any “visual pollution.” • Mexico City, at number seven in world population, was settled in 1325 by the Aztecs, who called the village Tenochititlan. In 1585, it became officially known as Ciudad de Mexico, or Mexico City. It’s the oldest capital and the largest city in the Americas. In 1900, the city’s population was

just 500,000. In less than 120 years, it has at #58 , with 5.8 million, and Dallas is at grown to more than 21 million people. #61 with 5.7 million. More than 4 million passengers ride the city’s Metro every day. Mexico City is a sinking city, sinking about 4 inches (10 cm) every year, and perhaps as much as 32.8 feet (10 meters) in the last 60 years. • Delhi, India is the world’s secondlargest urban area with close to 26.5 million people, and has been inhabited since at least 600 B.C. It’s estimated that 18 billionaires and 23,000 millionaires live in this city. Four years ago, the city was the most polluted city in the world, but improved in 2016 to the sixth-worst, with the deaths of 10,500 people every year attributed to air pollution. Of the world’s ten most polluted cities, nine are in India. • Tokyo, Japan is the world’s largest city, with 38.1 million people. It was first settled as a small fishing village named Edo. Around the year 1500, there were just a few thousand people, but by the early 1700s, Edo had its first one million residents. In 1868, when the Japanese imperial family moved there, it became the capital city, and was renamed Tokyo, which translates to “Eastern Capital.” Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station is the largest railway station in the world, with an average of 3.75 million passengers passing through every day. Tokyo can be an expensive place to visit. It has more top-rated restaurants than any other city in the world, and the mega-suite at the Ritz Carlton will set you back $20,000 per night. The city was the first to have a Disney park outside the U.S., a resort that employs 20,000 people. Even with its enormous population, Tokyo is a very safe city, with one of the lowest crime rates per capita of any major city. • Although Chicago has nearly 8.8 million people, it’s not classified as a mega-city. It ranks as the 38th largest city in the world. • Canada doesn’t have a single mega-city. Its largest city, Toronto, ranks 57th in the world, with close to 6 million inhabitants, the only Canadian city in the Top 150. Miami is right behind Toronto

THE PACIFIC OCEAN Tidbits invites you to dip your toes into these quick facts on the world’s largest ocean. • Nearly one-third of the Earth’s total surface area is covered by the Pacific Ocean. That’s an area of 65,436,200 square miles (169,479,000 sq. km), 15 times larger than the area of the United States and larger than the landmass of all the continents of the world put together! The Pacific accounts for 46% of all the Earth’s water surface. • It’s believed that the Spanish explorer Vasco de Balboa was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean in September of 1513, calling it Mar del Sur (Southern sea). Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the first to circumnavigate the world, explored the Pacific from 1519 to 1522, and named the body of water Mar Pacifico, which translates “Peaceful Sea.” • The temperature of the Ocean varies from a low of about 30 degrees F (-1.4 C) to a high of 86 degrees F (30 C) near the equator. • The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. Found in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Queensland, Australia, the reef is 1,429 miles (2,300 kg) long, with about 2,900 individual reefs and more than 1,000 islands. It’s the largest living structure on the planet, the only one which can be seen from space. The reef was discovered in 1770 by English explorer Captain James Cook when his ship ran aground and became stuck on the reef. The reef is made up of 600 types of soft and hard corals, and is home to upwards of 100 species of jellyfish, 3,000 different mollusks, 1,625 varieties of fish, and 133 types of sharks and rays. More than 30 different species of whales and dolphins also live there.

• Fifty-five countries border on the Pacific Ocean, including Canada, the United States, China, Australia, Japan, and Mexico. Indonesia’s 17,508 islands make up a large percentage of the Pacific Ocean’s 25,000+ islands. Japan has another 3,000. • The average depth of the Pacific Ocean is around 13,500 feet (4,115 m). The Mariana Trench, located in the western Pacific Ocean, is the deepest part of the world’s oceans. It’s a crescent-shaped trough in the Earth’s crust, measuring 1,580 miles (2,550 km) in length and about 43 miles (69 km) in width, 120 times bigger than the Grand Canyon. At the southern end of the Trench near Guam is a valley in its floor known as the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point on the planet. It reaches to a depth of 36,070 feet (10,994 meters), a depth that is 1.2 miles (2 km) greater than the height of Mt. Everest. • Four descents to the bottom of the Mariana Trench have been achieved, the first, a manned descent in 1960, followed by two unmanned remotely-operated unmanned vehicles in 1996 and 2009, and a manned mission by film director James Cameron in 2012. • The Pacific Ocean contains 452 volcanoes, 75% of the world’s total, which form a ring around the Pacific Ocean basin which is called the “Ring of Fire.” Volcanic activity contributes to the area’s large number of earthquakes, which can trigger gigantic tsunamis with speeds exceeding 500 mph (805 km/hr). • About 60% of all the fish caught in the world come from the Pacific Ocean.

FORTUNE COOKIES by Janet Spencer Fortune cookies are an American invention, unknown in China. Come along with Tidbits as we discover their history! FORTUNE COOKIES • In the region surrounding Kyoto, Japan, a cookie called “tsujiura senbei” is sold around the New Year for good luck. “Tsujiura” means “fortune telling” and “senbei” means “rice cracker.” These rice crackers are folded and baked with a message hidden inside. • They were developed because there was a particular shrine which crowds endeavored to visit on the New Year. Because the shrine was difficult to reach and the roads were crowded, not everyone could get there. In the 1800s, someone started selling these fortune crackers to wanna-be pilgrims as a spiritual consolation prize: if you can’t make it to the shrine, at least you can have a special cracker containing a message of hope from the gods. These were the precursor of the modern fortune cookie. • Makoto Hagiwara was a Japanese baron who was kidnapped by pirates and taken to the U.S. in 1879. After escaping, he decided to stay in California. He was a talented gardener and was hired to create a Japanese garden for the Japanese Village at World’s Fair California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 held in San Francisco. • When the fair ended, Hagiwara petitioned to have the temporary garden remain as a permanent fixture of Golden Gate Park. He was granted permission and put in charge of maintaining, expanding, and improving the garden. He added a tea house, and began baking Japanese style fortune-telling cookies to be served with the Japanese tea ceremony. • When demand for the cookies increased, he hired nearby Japanese bakeries to make the fortune cookies

for him. When Hagiwara died in 1925, his daughter Takano Hagiwara and her children took over. • When World War II started, over 120,000 Japanese people were sent to internment camps. The Hagiwara family and all of the Japanese bakers in San Francisco were sent to a camp in Utah for the next three years. • In the tea garden, anything that looked Japanese was torn down, the Hagiwara home was destroyed, all their possessions were taken, Chinese replaced the Japanese women as hostesses of the tea ceremony, and the place was renamed “The Oriental Tea Garden.” • During the war, Chinese people escaped internment. Because fortune cookies had been popular and profitable, Chinese people took over and started to manufacture and distribute them to their Chinese friends who ran Chinese restaurants throughout the city. • Because San Francisco was a heavily used military port during the war, soldiers who passed through became acquainted with the newly formed tradition of fortune cookies. When they returned to their hometowns and ate at local Chinese restaurants, they asked for fortune cookies, and when none were available, they complained to the management. Chinese restaurants started ordering Japanese fortune cookies to satisfy the wishes of their American patrons. • In Golden Gate Park, it wasn’t until 1952 that the title “Japanese Tea Garden” was re-instated. The Hagiwara family never regained their position as caretakers and were never reimbursed for their losses. It wasn’t until 2009 that Japanese gardeners were put in charge of the Japanese garden. • Today the five-acre Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year. It’s the oldest Japanese tea garden in the U.S. Fortune cookies are still served with every order in the tea house. (Continued Pg 6)

When VA Doctors Aren’t Doctors

we can’t get a timely medical appointment and we’re told they’re understaffed.) This collective bargaining agreement mess happened during the previous presidential administration and involved four different medical unions. Here’s an example given in a VA.gov press release: A VA nurse was elected as a union official, getting 100 percent of her $90,000 salary paid for by the taxpayers while doing zero medical work. Now, fingers crossed, those employees will be coming back to their real jobs when the VA stands up to some of those collective bargaining agreements. The VA will pull those union employees back under Title 38 of the U.S. Code for medical employees, and this will apply to all of their 104,000 employees. No longer will taxpayers fork out dollars to pay for those people to do union work. I honestly don’t get it. If I had gone to all the time and trouble of getting a medical degree, I would be embarrassed to spend my time not taking care of patients and instead work for a union.

Consider this: A Department of Veterans Affairs medical employee, whose salary is paid for by the taxpayers and who is on the VA list of employees, doesn’t actually work any hours at the VA because that employee is union and spends all his time doing union business. L i k e that? No, I don’t either. It gets worse. During the last fiscal year for which this record was kept (2016), those VA union employees pulled over a million hours on union business, to the tune of $49 million in salary, which we paid for. Officially, it’s called “Taxpayer Funded Union Time.” Who are these people? Dentists, nurses, physicians, chiropractors -- people from the whole list of medical professions -- were pulled aside, away from doing actual medical work. Look for the state fact sheets to see what is available in your state. Look at the Search Laws section to make sure you know the local laws. Also go to aarp.org and do a search for “grandparents raising grandchildren.”

A show of hands, please -- how many of us are suddenly raising our grandchildren just when we were about to retire? Or maybe after we’ve already retired and have fewer resources and income? There are 2 1/2 million of us doing just that. It wasn’t that long ago that we were on our own if a family situation fell apart and it became necessary for us to take in our grandchildren and raise them. Now we might be able to get some help. A new law was enacted this summer -- The Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act -- after being supported by 40 different advocacy organizations. The new law will create an advisory council working under the Department (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

The above graph presents the brand value of the 25 most valuable brands as of 2018. Amazon was the most valuable brand in the world with an estimated brand value of about 150.81 billion U.S. dollars. Apple, which was the second leading brand in the world, had a brand value of about 146.31 billion U.S. dollars. Brand value, not to be mistaken with brand equity or total company worth, is a phrase used in the marketing industry to describe the value of brands based on the implication that

the owner of a well-known brand name can generate more money than owners of similar products with a less well known name, thus brand valuation is the estimation of a brand's total value. The International Organization for Standardization's ISO 10668 standard (yah, exciting eh?) maps out the appropriate process of valuing brands by adhering to six key requirements: transparency, validity, reliability, sufficiency, objectivity along with financial, behavioral and legal parameters. A brand is an intangible asset (name, term, design, symbol or any other feature) which is the strength behind consumers initial comparison of one seller's product from another. It is often a

• Fortune cookies used to be made by hand, one at a time. A dollop of batter was dropped into a cast-iron mold similar to a waffle iron and then cooked over a grill. (Continued From Pg 3) When removed from the press, the slip of paper containing the fortune would be laid on pancake-type cookie, which would then be folded in half and folded in half again. The end result is supposed to resemble a butterfly or a flower blossom, but really just looks like a wonton. • In 1967, Edward Louie, owner of the Lotus Fortune Cookie Company in San Francisco, invented a machine that that used a vacuum to automatically insert the paper fortunes into the golden wafers as they came off the griddle. He also invented giant fortune cookies which could be stuffed with gifts such as jewelry or money, as well as risquÊ fortune cookies that were popular at parties. At the time of his death in 1990, the original machine he created was still in operation. • Subsequent improvements to his design by other inventors in later years made mass production of fortune cookies so easy and quick that their price dropped dramatically, contributing to their popularity. • About 3 billion fortune cookies are made each year around the world, the vast majority of which are consumed in the U.S. • Family-owned and operated, Wonton Food was founded by Mr. C. S. Wong who was born in South China and came to the U.S. in the 1960s. He started making noodles in the basement of a small store in Brooklyn’s Chinatown in 1973 with only ten employees and one production line. Today, Wonton Food is the largest manufacturer of noodles, wrappers, and fortune cookies in the United States. They turn out 4.5 million fortune cookies a day, more than anyone else in the world. In 1989, Wonton Food attempted to create a demand for fortune cookies in Hong Kong, where they

corporation's most valued asset. Strong brands enhance business performance primarily through their influence on three key stakeholder groups: (current and prospective) customers, employees and investors. They influence customer choice and create loyalty; attract, retain, and motivate talent; and lower the cost of financing. For example, Google is one of the most recognized brands in the world. In North America alone, the brand's value amounted to approximately 245.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2017. Ultimately, brands help shape perceptions and, therefore, purchasing behavior, making other like products and services less substitutable. Think of the phrase "Just Google it". continued next page

in 2019 22 Years of Touching Minds & Hearts were advertised as being “genuine American fortune cookies.â€? They never caught on because the idea was too foreign to the Chinese. • When 7’6â€? Chinese basketball player Yao Ming was signed to play for the Houston Rockets, the team went up against the Miami Heat in 2002. Miami Heat responded by distributing 8,000 fortune cookies, intended as a racial slur. Yao Ming didn’t understand the insult, because he’d grown up in China and had never seen a fortune cookie before in his life. He assumed it was an “American thing.â€? The Rockets won the game, 105-100. • Lottery officials suspected a case of fraud when the Powerball drawing on March 30, 2005, produced 110 second-prize winners. However, an investigation showed that all 110 winners had picked lottery numbers from fortune cookies made by Wonton Food, Inc. of New York City. The factory had printed the numbers “22, 28, 32, 33, 39, 40â€? as the lucky numbers on thousands of fortunes. The “40â€? in the fortune did not match the Powerball number, 42. Of the winners, 89 received $100,000 each, while the other 21 received $500,000 each because they were Power Play selections. The fortune inside the mass-produced cookie read: “All the preparation you've done will finally be paying off.â€?

You could ask your mother how to bake a cake, or you could ask Google or Siri. You could sit wondering what your high school crush made of their life, or you could check Facebook. You could go shopping with your friends at the mall, or have Amazon bring the mall to you. Were those cat memes not so absorbing, we may find ourselves questioning how humans used to do everything without the internet. The internet age has brought an increasing share of our lives online, and as Stephen Hawking painted our new reality, “we are all now connected by the internet, like neurons in a giant brain. The question then becomes who is constructing the brain itself. While vast arrays of constructors are building the platforms through which we connect, a small number of chief architects have risen through the masses to dominate the internet landscape. When it comes to these architects, they don’t come much bigger than Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon. According to a Statista survey in March 2017, these internet behemoths are all

now household names with more than 90 percent of respondents knowing the brands, at least by name. Google comes out on top as the most recognizable at 96 percent. Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome and the Google.com search engine are the most commonly used from the range that seems to cover every reason someone would ever venture onto the internet. This dominant presence means that around 69 percent of people use at least one Google service or product daily. However, Google is not alone in their desire to spread beyond their initial services when the development of the giants is brought into focus. Facebook’s purchase of Instagram and Amazon and Apple’s movements into entertainment through Amazon Prime and Apple Music serve as prominent examples of these desires. Given their ever increasing reach, it should come as no surprise that more than half of Americans believe the four giants that comprise GAFA. (Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon) have become an integral part of our society. Though their architectural influence on society is greeted with skepticism by many, as the 31 percent of people who think that influence is too much would suggest. As we share more and more of ourselves online, publically or privately, the amount of personal information GAFA

Ă“Ă“Â?Ă“Ă?ne Â?ĂłÂ?ÂŁÂƒb ÂŁ[½

have access to is ever increasing. Although the mere 32 percent of people thinking Amazon respects their privacy might seem low, it’s an improvement on the 25 percent for Google, 19 percent for Apple, and 14 percent for Facebook. Nevertheless, this mistrust does not appear to be viewed as detrimental in that 87 percent of people have a Facebook account and 72 percent use it daily. The giants of GAFA will likely continue to grow as they purchase competitive startups that pose any alternative to what is becoming business as usual for them, the biggest players in the internet game. And what a self perpetuating game it is. Here's a thought to ponder.. which one of these will be gobbled up by one of the other 3? It seems that any concern about information use and unchecked societal influence are not enough for consumers to abstain en mass from the largely free services GAFA provide. Perhaps autonomy is a price consumers are willing to pay, no doubt these companies are banking it. "The deepest problems of modern life derive from the claim of the individual to preserve the autonomy and individuality of his existence in the face of overwhelming social forces, of historical heritage, of external culture, and of the technique of life." ► England’s Prince Philip was born on a kitchen table in Greece.

► Ancient Egyptians often were buried with opium, boats and artificial limbs for use in the afterlife. And it wasn’t unusual to have a model of the deceased’s home included, as well -- just in case shelter was needed.

► The Tom Thumb locomotive and Jell-O were invented by the same person.

► Martha Stewart got her start in business by catering from her home.

► A law in Memphis, Tennessee, states that it is illegal for a woman to drive a car unless a man walks in front of it to warn approaching motorists and pedestrians.

► As the holidays approach and you’re out shopping for gifts, you might want to keep this in mind: According to survey results, siblings are the worst holiday giftgivers, getting the lowest marks from 21 percent of respondents. However, they weren’t far behind in-laws, who were rated the worst by 20 percent.

► Ireland’s Porterhouse Brewing Company has what might seem to be an unlikely hit on its hands: the Oyster Stout. During the brewing process, raw oysters are shucked directly into the conditioning tank. This unlikely combination is popular, though, selling out quickly whenever it’s available.
