The Problem: Do you suffer with chronic G.I. symptoms: bloating, reflux, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation? Yet, your exams and conventional lab tests keep coming back normal. A diagnosis of IBS and/or fibromyalgia brings you no closer to finding out the underlying causes and correction of your health problems. Whatever you call it there are no drugs that can heal these disabling disorders. You must get to the underlying cause and correct it with proper dietary and nutritional intervention. A Primary Underlying Cause FLC syndrome: “feeling like crap” The common symptoms of brain fog, chronic pain and fatigue are all interconnected because the body is all connected. These symptoms are usually related to chronic systemic inflammation generated by your immune system. Your G.I. tract plays a major role in this body-wide inflammation, because 70% of your immune system resides within your gastrointestinal tract lining. Research is now showing that an imbalance or overgrowth of small intestine bacteria, called SIBO, is a major contributing factor to chronic systemic inflammation and “feeling like crap” or FLC syndrome. SIBO--What Is It and What Causes It: SIBO is best understood as ‘an overgrowth of GI microorganisms in the small intestine, adversely affecting the human host’. This overgrowth of bacteria and/or yeast can ferment the carbs and sugars in your food creating hydrogen or methane gases. As I tell my patients, they dine on your dinner! There are some major telltale signs of SIBO: gas, bloating, reflux, abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhea and/or constipation. The condition of SIBO is therefore often misdiagnosed as GERD and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). SIBO has also been associated with Inflammatory bowel disease e.g., Crohn’s disease and colitis. The causes of SIBO are many and complex such as: low stomach acid, pancreatic enzyme insufficiency, multiple courses of antibiotics disrupting the small intestine microbiome, decreased gut motility and chronic constipation causing the bacteria to migrate from the colon into the small bowel. SIBO-Proper Diagnosis and Treatment: Besides the telltale signs and symptoms found on a good history, the gold standard lab test for SIBO is a Challenge Breath Test. This test can be ordered by a doctor knowledgeable in its use and interpretation. Once diagnosed proper treatment must commence if one is to find real healing. Part of the treatment involves specific dietary changes and antimicrobial herbs to remove the overgrowth of SI bacteria. Have You Heard About ‘Leaky Gut’? • Grabbing the animal’s nose, the dog held on as the horse swung him back and forth, smashing him against the tractor. Hero collapsed but was up again in an instant, attacking the horse who mercilessly kicked and stomped the dog. • While the horse was distracted by the dog, Mrs. Jolley rushed to the aid of her son, then picked up a stick and went after the horse. Under attack now by both a dog and a woman, the stallion bolted outside. Hero dropped to the ground, bleeding profusely. The vet found the dog had two crushed feet, five missing teeth, and four broken ribs. Still, he made a complete recovery. DOG vs. GATOR • In July of 2001, 84-year-old Ruth Gay left her Fort Myers, Florida home to walk her dog, an Australian blue heeler named Blue. She slipped on wet grass about 9:00 p.m., suffering facial and shoulder injuries. She was unable to get up. She began calling for help while Blue started to bark. But no one heard— except for a 12 ft (3.7 m) alligator who crawled out of a nearby canal.

• When the gator approached the fallen woman, the dog began gnashing, snarling, and snapping until the alligator turned tail. An hour later, Gay’s family arrived home and Blue ran home to alert them to the trouble. Ruth Gay went to the hospital where she had surgery on both shoulders. Blue went to the vets where he was treated for 30 puncture wounds. Both recovered. A COLD NIGHT • It was a cold December night in 1965 when Marvin Scott left his snug home to walk down to the steep shores of Lake Spanaway in Washington to check his patrol boat. The temperature was 0 F (-18 C) and he didn’t want the boat to get iced over. Marvin’s dog Patches, a collieMalamute mix, volunteered to come along for the short, cold walk. • As he stood on the pitching boat trying to untangle icy lines, Marvin’s feet suddenly slipped out from underneath him. Falling, he smashed into the floating dock, smacking his head and tearing nearly every muscle and tendon in his legs before plunging unconscious into the frigid water. • Patches leapt into the churning water and dove for his sinking master. After clamping his teeth on Marvin’s hair, Patches swam for the surface and headed for the dock. Marvin, semiconscious now, reached for the dock and grabbed hold of it. Patches swam for shore. Before he could climb out, Marvin blacked out and slipped back into the water. • Patches

leapt back into the lake, and again seized Marvin’s hair and dragged him back to the dock. Marvin groggily grabbed the edge of the dock and shoved the dog to safety. Yet he did not have the strength to haul himself out of the water. Patches, pacing and whining, finally reached down and grabbed the collar of his coat, pulling with all his might. Finally Marvin clambered onto the dock, where he passed out. • Patches lay by his master until he regained consciousness. Then he took hold of the coat collar again, tugging, yanking, and urging his master towards home. Marvin Scott crawled towards home until he was close enough to throw rocks at the window, alerting his wife. It took six months for Marvin to recover from his brush with death, but he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to recover at all if it weren’t for his faithful dog Patches. FIRE ALARM • When the small Spitz named Buster woke up around 4:00 a.m. on April 13, 1930, smoke already filled the apartment he shared with his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Remackel in Minneapolis. He immediately went to his companion, a cat named Fluffy. They had been inseparable since the day Buster first discovered Fluffy stuck in a trap and carried the cat home, trap and all. • After waking the cat, Buster went to the bedroom where his mistress slept. Licking, barking, and pawing failed to rouse the woman, who was already losing consciousness. Finally he bit her. Mrs. Remackel awoke, alarmed. • While she headed to the second bedroom to find her husband, Buster headed to the front door of the apartment, throwing himself against it and barking until she opened the door and let him into the building’s corridor. • Buster stopped at the first door, scratching, howling, and leaping until a groggy tenant opened the door to see what the fuss was. Buster proceeded to

the next door, and then the next, until every door had been opened and every tenant alerted, except one. • Buster frantically threw his 25 lb (11 kg) body against the last door with such force that the latch gave way. He went to the bed where an elderly man, an amputee, lay sleeping. After waking him, Buster stayed by his side as he fumbled with his artificial leg, then guided him through the smoke-filled corridor, down the stairs, and outside. • As flames leapt from the building, Buster rushed back inside to make one more rescue— because Fluffy was still inside. By now flames engulfed the Remackel’s apartment. Buster barked and the terrified cat came running. Nipping at the cat’s heels, Buster herded her out the door, down the hallway, and outside. He saved the cat— and 35 people.

March 10 – 16 has been designated National Termite Week, the perfect time for Tidbits to check into the facts on these destructive yet sometimes beneficial insects. • There are more than 3,000 known termite species, present on every continent except Antarctica. Only about 50 species live in North America. Their colonies live in mounds that range in size from a few hundred insects to gigantic groups numbering several million. One of the largest known mounds was 42 feet (12.8 m) tall, about the height of a twostory house. • The worker termites are responsible for the labor within the colony, including foraging, food storage, and taking care of the nest. These are the ones found in infested wood. Strangely enough, the workers are blind, and spend their existence in the dark, damp nest where eyesight is not needed. • When the workers detect a threat, they send out a warning to their fellow colony members. They send out an alarm by banging their tiny heads against the walls, so that the others can detect the vibrations and respond to the danger. • Reproductive termites, the kings and queens, must fly to find new nest sites as well as seeking a mate, so these termites have eyesight, as well as two pairs of prominent wings. The female termite queen has the longest lifespan of any insect in the world, averaging about 25 years. She lays one egg every 15 seconds. Do the math – that’s 30,000 eggs per day! The kings and queens are larger than the workers. Workers will reach a length of Âź to ½-inch, while the reproductive termites will be over an inch (2.54 cm) long.

• Entomologists, those who study insects, estimate there are 1,000 lbs. (453.6 kg) of termites for every human on Earth. • There are three types of termites, based on their habitat and diet. Dampwood termites, found only in coniferous forests, favor moist, decaying wood, and remain close to the ground. Drywood termites live in hardwood forests and don’t require much moisture in the wood they eat. They’re often found in attics. Although subterranean termites prefer soft woods, they will invade nearly every type of wood, and can live nearly everywhere, except for cold habitats. A termite’s diet isn’t limited to just wood – they’re also fond of paper, drywall, and even plastic. They get their nutrients from cellulose, the organic fiber in wood and plants. • Every year, termites cause more than $5 billion in damages to American homeowners. A group of about 60,000 of these tiny insects can eat one foot (30.5 cm) of a 2x4 beam in about five months. Yet ecologically speaking, they have an important role in organic decomposition, providing benefits to the environment by breaking down tough plant fibers, and recycling dead trees into new soil. Their miles of tunnel networks aerate the soil, and actually enrich the soil. • In certain cultures, the termite is considered a delicacy to eat, and the creatures are even used in the manufacture of many medicines, including those for the treatment of asthma and sinusitis.

• Every episode of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhoodâ€? began with Fred singing the theme song “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?â€?, a song composed by Rogers himself. He began playing the piano at age five. Nearly all of the music on the program was composed by Rogers. • Bullied as a child for being overweight, Mr. Rogers sought to teach children to love themselves and others, and how to overcome their fears. Each program had a theme, addressing life’s issues, such as going to the doctor, starting school, divorce, and racism, or demonstrations of how things work or the manufacture of everyday items, often including a field trip. Mr. Rogers frequently fed fish in his aquarium during the program. • A Pennsylvania native, during high school Rogers was president of the student council, editor of the yearbook, an honors student, and even obtained a pilot’s license. After earning a degree in music composition, he entered the seminary and became an ordained Presbyterian minister. Yet his desire was to work in television, and he landed a job with NBC as an assistant producer on musical programs. He went on to produce an hour-long program “The Children’s Corner,â€? also serving as the show’s puppeteer, music composer, and organist. • Mr. Rogers’ signature outfit was sneakers and a zippered cardigan. He got into the habit of wearing sneakers on set when he noticed they were quieter than work shoes. The cardigans were knitted by his mother, who had knitted sweaters for American soldiers fighting in Europe during World War II. • Fred Rogers wrote upwards of 35 books for children, helping them handle what might come their way in life, including Going to the Doctor, Moving, Going to Day Care, Making Friends, The New Baby, and When a Pet Dies. After the September 11 attacks, he issued public service announcements for parents, instructing them on how to discuss the tragedy with their children. • Comedian Eddie Murphy parodied Fred Rogers on Saturday Night Live, as “Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood.â€? After an SNL taping in 1982, Fred, who truly enjoyed Murphy’s portrayal, surprised the comedian in his dressing room. When Murphy opened the door, he stepped back, then with a huge smile, said, “The REAL Mister Rogers!â€? • In 1996, Rogers veered away from children’s programming for one episode of television’s Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, in which he played the role of a preacher, the only time he appeared on television as someone other than himself.

Bush spoke of Mr. Rogers at the time of the award, saying that “Fred Rogers has proven that television can soothe the soul and nurture the spirit and teach the very young.â€? Rogers also received 40 honorary degrees from universities, including Yale, Carnegie Mellon, and Dartmouth. One of his cardigan sweaters is on display at the Smithsonian Institute. • Fred Rogers took great care of himself, observing a vegetarian diet, swimming every morning, and never smoked or drank. However, he was no match for stomach cancer diagnosed in December, 2002. Just two months later, Mr. Rogers passed away shortly before his 75th birthday.

Don’t Be a Victim of Pension Poaching

benefits, which can put thousands of dollars in a veteran’s pocket each month to pay for in-home care, assisted living and private nursing. What they want in return is a percentage -- up front. (Yes, attorneys can charge fees for their services, but they need to be approved by the VA.) While most of us would call this fraud, there apparently aren’t any laws against charging fees. And yet some people are against making this illegal, claiming we already have laws against fraud. The bill has come before the last two Congresses, passing easily in the House and getting stalled in the Senate. The short text of the bills hasn’t changed. If you’re invited to a seminar that promises to help you get your benefits, don’t go. Instead, contact the closest veterans group, such as the American Legion. Ask for the Veterans Service Officer. They won’t charge you for their services. Remember: The more cash you’re likely to get in retroactive benefits, the more of a target you’re going to be to scammers who want a piece of that money.

There is a law currently making its way through Congress called the Preventing Crimes Against Veterans Act. Its purpose is to add another tool to the arsenal to prevent frauds against veterans. Those convicted could be fined, imprisoned for five years, or both. Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) is behind this bill, focusing on what they call pension poaching, specifically, criminals who purport to help veterans get their benefits faster and who charge a fee for services. They prowl Department of Veterans Affairs clinics, assisted-living centers, hospitals and senior housing, claiming they know all the ropes and can get veteran benefits much faster -- for a fee. • In 2006, a team of researchers from Bangor University in North Wales travelled to Iceland to gather clams in order to study the effects of climate change on the local ecosystem. • Because clams can live for a very long time, their calcified shells can provide a historical account on how the surrounding environment has changed over the decades. Clams add a ridge to their shells for every year they live, and by counting those ridges, you can tell how old a clam is. The ring grows in the summer when food is plentiful, and then stops growing in the winter when food is scarce. Just as with tree rings, in summers with lots of food, the ring is wide, whereas a narrow ring indicates a season with less food. • In water that was 262 feet (80 m) deep, researchers pulled up about 200 ocean quahog clams. These clams looked like any typical nondescript clam, with hard shells that are nearly round in shape, held together by a hinge made of ligaments, black in color, and about the size of the palm of your hand. The word “quahog” comes from a Native American term meaning “clam.” At the time, it was thought that these mollusks lived no longer than 100 years at the most. Studying their growth rings would provide a peek into ocean conditions over the past century. • Scientists loaded all 200 clams into large freezers. Clams cannot survive being frozen. When they began examining them, one clam in particular seemed especially old. Researchers counted over 400 growth rings on the outside of the clam shell. They then split the clam open in order to count the rings in the inside of the shell where they were more clearly delineated. And this is when they discovered that the clam was actually 507 years old. It was the oldest living creature ever found— and they had killed it. • They named the ancient clam “Ming” because it was

The clam was born just a few years after Columbus set sail. • When they released their findings, there was an uproar that such an ancient creature had been murdered for the sake of science. The biologists pointed out that there was no way for them to have known in advance how old it was, remarking, “Thousands of ocean quahogs are caught commercially every year, so it is entirely likely that some fishermen may have caught quahogs that are as old as or even older than the one we caught.” There’s no telling how much longer the clam could have lived had it not been harvested. • Previous record-holders for oldest clams include a 220-year-old ocean quahog clam pulled from American waters

in 1982. A 374-year-old clam, found in 1968, is displayed in a German museum. • When biologists had the clam shell carbon-dated to check the accuracy of their estimate of its age, the result came back saying their assessment was accurate to within a year or two. Marine biologists attribute the clam’s longevity to the fact that it has an extremely slow metabolism. • None of the other 200 clams dredged up in this climate-change research got names. • The actual sex of the clam remains unknown, as its reproductive state was recorded as “spent.” • Remember then, next time you’re enjoying clam chowder or a seafood casserole, that you may be eating creatures that are several centuries old.
