What Is Chronic Lyme Disease, and Does It Exist? By Dr. Greg Fors, Board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist (DIBCN) Misconception #1: In Conventional Medicine, Chronic Lyme Disease Does Not Exist! There is the recognition and diagnosis of acute Lyme disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterial spirochete, with its classic a bull’s-eye rash, and positive Elisa antibody test. This is usually followed by the application of an antibiotic such as doxycycline for 4 to 6 weeks. However, there is no diagnostic recognition of what some call Chronic Lyme Disease. In a study of 61 people treated for Lyme disease, John Hopkins University School Of Medicine researchers concluded that: “fatigue, pain, insomnia and depression do persist over long periods of time for some individuals, even though they had normal physical exams and normal laboratory findings.â€? At the end of the study, John N. Aucott, M.D., director of the Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center concluded, “Post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) is a real disorder that causes severe symptoms in the absence of clinically detectable infectionâ€?. Misconception #2: You Always Get a Bulls-Eye Rash The symptoms of Lyme disease can show up with a bang or progress very slowly and cause a great deal of confusion. The usual initial symptoms are fever, headache, nausea, muscle ache and a stiff neck, but many times this can be written off as a bad case of flu. That is, unless you get the very classic bull's-eye rash. However, the bull’s-eye rash is found in only about one third of the diagnosed cases. Furthermore, many do not get any early symptoms and months later their first signs may be muscle weakness, tingling/numbness, tremors/tics, optic disturbances or even memory deficiency, psychiatric presentations, or other neurologic disorders. This especially true in Chronic Lyme cases. Misconception #3: The Disease Is Just Caused By the “Lymeâ€? Bacteria What we call Lyme disease today was first identified in the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut and was found to be caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. Since then it has been discovered that ticks carry multiple infectious microbes, now identified as co-infections of the disease. These underdiagnosed co-infections of Lyme disease include the microscopic protozoan parasite Babesia and the bacteria Bartonella, both transmitted by ticks. Other co-infected agents are Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis, tickborne bacterial diseases that infect animals and humans. In chronic complex disorders involving joint pain, fatigue and neurological symptoms, Borrelia burgdorferi and these other infective agents should be considered and tested for by utilizing laboratories that specialize in the diagnosis of these infections. Misconception #4: Lyme Diagnosis Is Accurate and Simple Commonly used ELISA antibody screen for Lyme disease can miss more than 50% of positively infected individuals. It is also useless in the first month after a tick bite and may not detect past infections. The Western Blot test is generally considered the most reliable test currently available, although it is estimated to be only 80% accurate even at the best labs. Therefore, it is extremely important for individuals with complex chronic disorders to see a doctor who has an in-depth understanding of Lyme disease testing and its co-infections. These doctors work with labs that are proven leaders in the field, such as Igenex. Misconception #5: The Real Underlying Issue - It’s the Individual NOT the Bug! This whole debate misses the primary underlying issue, that of the health of the immune system of the individual who was bitten by a deer tick. Humans have been dealing with and fighting off Lyme disease for thousands of years, before there were antibiotics. The 5,300-year-old ice mummy dubbed Ă–tzi, discovered in the Eastern Alps about 30 years ago was found to have genetic evidence of Borrelia burgdorferi in his tissues. In other words, this ancient man infected with Lyme bacteria was healthy enough to climb over the Alps. Eventually he died from an arrow in his back. Misconception #6: Chronic Lyme Can Be Fixed With Multiple Antibiotics Yes, acute Lyme disease can be helped by proper use of antibiotic therapy. However, I’ve seen far too many individuals on a cocktail of antibiotic therapy for their Chronic Lyme just getting sicker and sicker. Then their Lyme doctor tells them that it’s a Herxhiemer reaction from the kill off, and they need more antibiotics or different antibiotics or IV antibiotics. Really, after six months of antibiotic therapy, maybe something is being missed. Proper Care of the Possible Chronic Lyme Patient I take a comprehensive history followed by in-depth neurological, orthopedic and nutritional examination. Based on this information I order the appropriate laboratory tests for that patient. These tests look for nutritional deficiencies, metabolic issues, hormonal imbalances, gut health and possible food allergies. Along with this I will run specialized tests to look for chronic infectious agents, e.g. Borrelia burgdorferi, Babesia, Bartonella, Epstein-Barr virus, as well as others, based on the patient’s history and exam findings. Treating The Whole Person Naturally Once identified, all nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal issues are addressed with supportive dietary changes and nutrient support. Food allergies identified and removed. Specific botanicals and nutraceuticals are given to strengthen the immune system and fight off any chronic infectious agent identified. Private Cruzatte, who was blind in one eye and nearsighted in the other, insisted he had not shot his captain. Lewis, however, had the offending bullet: A .54 caliber slug from a modern U.S. Army rifle, identical to the one carried by Cruzatte. ► On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. MIDDLE CHILDREN (cont’d)
• Having spent much of their life waiting their turn, they tend to have a high degree of patience. This, along with always having had to share, and having the ability to see to see things from all sides, also makes them good negotiators and listeners, as well as being fairly flexible, more willing to compromise, and peacemakers by nature. Since many are used to not getting their own way, they become skillful manipulators. • Middles seem to have a passion for confronting injustice and unfairness, perhaps because they are frequently overshadowed by their siblings. Born between an older sister and a younger brother, Civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. met the injustice of racial inequality head-on. Also a middle, Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, instituted a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent rebellion against his country’s unjust racist regime, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Renowned suffragist Susan B. Anthony came from a politically active family that toiled in

► On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. This paved the way for her tireless crusade for women’s rights to vote and own property. Sadly, she had not seen the fruits of her labor by her death in 1906, since the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution wasn’t passed until 1920. • Middle children seem to make excellent life partners because of their ability to get along with a variety of personalities. Having had to share and compromise with siblings helps them to peacefully co-exist with others. Studies indicate that they are more likely to be faithful to their spouse or partner. Yet because they dislike conflict, they might avoid dealing with conflict in marriage or at work. Their trusting and cooperative temperament can also lead to being taken advantage of. • Risk-taking and a willingness to try new things are characteristic of trailblazing middles. A recent study indicates that 85% of middles are open to new ideas (compared to 50% of firstborns), so it should come as no surprise that Bill Gates was the brother between two sisters. Although his parents wanted him to pursue a law career, after two years of study at Harvard, Gates dropped out in 1975, and launched Microsoft the same year, and registered the trade name with the State of New Mexico the following year. In 1987, he became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, worth $1.25 billion. Today that number is around $100 billion. • Two other
billionaires are middle children, sharing many similar characteristics with Bill Gates. Warren Buffett, Mark Zuckerberg, and Gates are all sandwiched between two sisters. All are very hard-working, competitive businessmen, all stay out of the way of their upper employees, allowing them to do their jobs without interfering, and all three have pledged to give at least 50% of their wealth to charity. • Another risk-taking college dropout was the middle of three sisters. Jennifer Lopez’ older sister was “the pretty one, the younger one was “the singer,” while JLo was known as “the athletic one.” When Jennifer quit college after one semester to pursue an acting career, her mother told her it was “really stupid” and booted Jennifer out of the house. It wasn’t until Jennifer was 22 that she got her first big break, as a backup dancer for the New Kids on the Block. Today her net worth is estimated at $400 million. • Of all the U.S. Presidents since 1787, 52% were middle children, including Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, JFK, Teddy Roosevelt, and Donald Trump, all of whom have exercised that ability to negotiate. Although 31st President Herbert Hoover was a middle child, when he lost both parents by the time he was nine, Hoover and his siblings were split up and raised by different relatives. But this didn’t keep Hoover from becoming a millionaire from working as a mining engineer and consultant before entering the world of government. • Archie and Olivia Manning raised three sons in the world of football, but the middle boy, Peyton, is the one considered by many to be the sport’s greatest quarterbacks of all time. Peyton Manning retired after the 2015 season after 14 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and four seasons with the Denver Broncos. He was named the league’s MVP a record five times, played in the Pro Bowl
a record 14 times, holds the NFL record for career touchdown passes and career passing yards, and has two Super Bowl wins on his list of achievements. • In their quest for attention, middles often find interesting ways to grab it, sometimes as a creative artist or being the “jokester.” It’s interesting to note that TV hosts Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Jon Stewart, and James Corden were all “stuck in the middle.”

LOUIS ARMSTRONG This week, Tidbits celebrates the birthday of trumpet virtuoso Louis Armstrong, better known as “Satchmo.” From poverty to prodigy, the story of Satchmo is remarkable! • The section of New Orleans, Louisiana, where Armstrong was born in August of 1901 was so poor it was nicknamed “The Battlefield.” His father stoked the furnaces in a local turpentine factory, but abandoned the family shortly after Louis’ birth. His mother turned to prostitution, frequently leaving the baby with his grandmother. • The family’s extreme poverty forced Louis to leave school in the fifth grade to contribute to its support. A neighborhood family gave him a job collecting junk and delivering coal. On his delivery rounds, he was exposed to the sounds of the jazz that would shape his life. • At age 12, during a New Year’s celebration, young Louis fired his stepfather’s gun into the air, and was promptly arrested. He was sent to the Colored Waif’s Home for Boys, which could have been the worst thing to happen. Yet Armstrong was known to say, “It sure was the greatest thing that ever happened to me,” for it was at the home that Armstrong was taught to play the bugle and cornet. He played in the home’s brass band, which was frequently hired to play at socials, picnics, and funerals. • After his release 18 months later, Armstrong returned to his junk and coal duties, but began filling in with honky-tonk bands in the area. The great jazz bandleader King Oliver befriended the young boy, tutored him, gifted him with a cornet, and occasionally allowed him to play as a sub in the band. • At 17, Armstrong took on the huge responsibility of adopting a three-year-old, the son of his cousin who had died. The toddler had fallen off a porch and received a head injury that left him mentally impaired. Armstrong would care for the boy for the rest of his life. • At 18, Armstrong’s abilities landed him a permanent spot in New Orleans’ most popular band, enabling him to quit his manual labor and become a full-time musician. Playing at dances, parties, and on riverboats led him to interactions with jazz legends. He made the move to Chicago in 1922 to join King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band, and his fame began to spread. His first recorded solo came along the following year. • His new wife, the pianist from the band, convinced Louis to start his own band, and when he was 23, Louis Armstrong & the Hot Five was born. Over the next three years, the band made more than 60 records that are considered the most influential recordings in jazz history. In 1926, he added singing to his performances, with his gravelly voice instantly recognizable. He made the wordless “scat” style of singing incredibly popular. By 1932, Armstrong had added Broadway productions and movie roles to his achievements. A European tour followed in 1933. • The nickname Satchmo came from the term “Satchelmouth,” referring to his wide mouth. A journalist mispronounced it as Satchmo and the name stuck. • There was rarely a time in his career that Satchmo wasn’t popular, even tipping the Beatles off the No. 1 slot in 1964 with his rendition of “Hello, Dolly!” Even those people who aren’t familiar with Armstrong’s music recognize the still-popular “What a Wonderful World,” recorded in 1967, and a No. 1 hit around the world.

volunteers (guardian escorts) to pull it off, and there are over 38,000 veterans on a wait list. We’re running out of time to get all the vets to Washington who want to go. There are programs to help more veterans get there. The Solo program is for those who have friends and family who can fund the air trip and hotel for one to three days. The Lone Eagle program is for veterans who are not near an airport hub. Once in Washington, the veteran and his escort will join the main group for all their activities. In addition, Honor Flights has expanded to include Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. If you can send money, please do. The address is Honor Flight, Inc., 175 South Tuttle Road, Springfield, OH 45505, or donate at www.honorflight.org. (Don’t miss the video on the website). If you want information or can serve as an escort, call Honor Flight at 937-521-2400, or Jane Julian at 614-558-6220. If you have any medical experience, that’s a bonus, but there are many roles you can fill.
The number of World War II veterans topped 16 million during the war. Now there are fewer than half a million still alive, all in their 80s and 90s. We’re losing over 300 WWII veterans each day. Most of them have never seen the memorial in Washington, D.C., that was built in their honor. Honor Flights Network, a nonprofit, works to change that. Since 2010, it has escorted 222,133 veterans to see the memorial, at no cost to the veteran. Last year HFN took 21,000 veterans to Washington. The one-day trips leave from a “hub” in most states and fly to Washington, where they visit the memorial dedicated to them, as well as the Vietnam and Korean memorials. These trips are (c) 2019 King Features Synd., scheduled multiple times a year. But it takes money and Inc.

It’s Not Too Late to Start Moving
If we’ve been inactive for many years, it’s easy to just assume that there’s nothing we can do at our age to increase our health and longevity. Not so, according to a new study. A large University of Cambridge study of 14,000 participants over nearly 13 years assessed diet, alcohol consumption, body mass index, occupation -- and physical activity levels -- and compared those with mortality risk from any condition. Here’s what researchers discovered: Those who were sedentary and remained sedentary had a higher risk of mortality. However, those who started with low activity levels but increased them had additional longevity benefits. Specifically, the risk of death decreased 24% for a low increase in activity, 38% for a medium increase, and 42% for a high increase in activity.
In other words, even if we’ve been very sedentary, becoming more active now lowers our mortality risk. Many researchers (and the World Health Organization) still say that 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise is what we all need. They even break it down into minutes of activities like dog walking or gardening, all the way up to running and playing tennis. But that doesn’t mean we should all do 150 minutes of cycling or jogging per week, especially without medical advice. Yes, we can gain longevity if we become more active, but it shouldn’t be at the risk of our current health. Get your doctor’s opinion. Ask for a plan to gradually increase your activity level. How many minutes of which activity should you do each week? If you’re going to walk, where will you do that? If you want at-home exercise equipment, what kind? If your doctor’s office has a sports medicine department, ask about being assessed on its equipment. Seriously consider upping your activity level, but do it safely. HALITOSIS Did you know there is a special day set aside to celebrate your breath? August 6 is National Fresh Breath Day, and Tidbits is investigating the causes of all those things that cause halitosis! • People have been concerned about bad breath since ancient Egypt. An Egyptian papyrus from 1550 BC details recipes for the condition, listing a mixture of incense, cinnamon, myrrh, and honey as a cure. Fifth-century Greek medicine recommended a mouthwash of red wine and spices. Ancient Chinese emperors demanded that everyone in their presence chew a clove for fresh breath. The Chinese were also the first to utilize a toothbrush to deal with the problem, introducing hogs’-hair bristle brushes in the 15th century. • In the 1850s, Europeans and North Americans carried tins of breath fresheners concocted from cardamom, ambergris, musk, essence of violet and rose, licorice, and cinnamon oil. The word “halitosis” was coined by a physician named Joseph Howe, and detailed in his 1874 book “The Breath, and the Diseases which Give It a Fetid Odor.” The word had its origins in the Latin word “halitus,” which means “breath.” • In 1879, a Missouri doctor introduced Listerine, marketed as an antiseptic and remedy for dandruff, diphtheria, dysentery, and small pox, and even as a floor cleaner. It wasn’t until the 1920s that Listerine was heralded as the answer for “chronic halitosis.” The company’s annual sales leaped from $115,000 to more than $8 million in seven years once Listerine became a “mouthwash.” • The underlying causes of bad breath are many. The food we eat is a major contributor, as the particles around the teeth increase sulfur-producing bacteria and cause an odor. • Onions, garlic, and certain spices are a major
bloodstream, and are carried to the lungs. Without regular brushing and flossing, those food particles remain in the mouth around the teeth and on the tongue. • Dry mouth is another source of halitosis. Because saliva helps cleanse the mouth by removing food particles, when the production of saliva is low, bad breath is worsened. That’s why we have “morning breath,” since saliva production while we sleep is very low. Any condition that causes postnasal drip also produces odor, as well as tooth decay or gum disease, tonsils ailments, and wounds following tooth extraction. • Diseases can also trigger halitosis as well as the medications used to treat them, when the chemicals in them are released in the bloodstream. Antidepressants, high blood pressure medicine, and antihistamines all reduce saliva production, contributing to bad breath. Studies indicate that about 10% of halitosis cases are the result of illness, including cancer, chronic reflux, diabetes, liver and kidney disease, and pneumonia. • For nearly 100 years, mouthwashes contained alcohol, which defeated the purpose of treating bad breath, since alcohol is a drying agent that contributed to dry mouth. • About one in three people have halitosis on a regular basis, contributing to the $1 billion spent by consumers every year on mouth rinses, mints, and other bad breath remedies. About 90% of halitosis can be traced to the mouth, with the tongue as the most common source, followed by the tonsils. • Introduced in the 1990s, a portable monitor known as a halimeter can be used to measure the levels of hydrogen sulfide generated by bacteria in the mouth.

For all those middle children who have ever felt left out, here’s good news! August 10 has been designated National Middle Child Day, and, in honor of this commemoration, Tidbits is handing out the facts on some famous “middles,” along with some of the characteristics of middle children. • Some middles view their place in the birth order to be one of disadvantage, not having received the attention doled out to the first-born, nor the affection showered on the family’s baby. The old wives’ tale says this causes them to become withdrawn, resentful, underestimated, misunderstood, and lacking in confidence. Yet these socalled “disadvantages” seem to give the middles positive characteristics of empathy, independence, and creativity. Creativity blossoms as they devise creative ways to stand apart from their siblings. Because they don’t seem to receive as much attention, middles often try to get that attention through any means possible, whether good or bad. Some ask for help with things they already can do as a means of receiving longed-for attention. • Middles tend to lean on outside friends rather than the family as a result of feeling left out. Sometimes the middles’ eagerness to please makes them too easily influenced by those friends. • In the work world, middle children are team-builders who exhibit flexibility and independence and don’t need to be micromanaged, nor do they like to micromanage others. Since they think outside the box, they are frequently the ones who come up with new ideas.
