We are the land of 10,000 lakes (more like 50,000), the land of sky blue water (let’s get back to keeping it that way) and not just a few rivers, creeks and streams. So what's the most important connection to this? Bridges (pun intended). Ranking of 22nd in the nation, Minnesota has just under 13,000 bridges to get us from one bank to another. Let's have a look at a few of the 200 historic ones. Bridges can be historic for several reasons, including significant engineering accomplishments, aesthetic details, or, association with important transportation projects. The Oldest - The Point Douglas-St. Louis River Road Bridge - The oldest known stone arch bridge in the state of Minnesota is located near Stillwater. Dating back to 1863, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is not a large bridge (17ft wide and 12 ft high) and can hardly accomodate two people. It was part of a series of frontier roads or military roads which were probably used more often by early settlers of the Minnesota Territory. The bridge crosses Brown’s Creek, which flows east into the St. Croix River. The Longest - The Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge - Opened on October 25, 1985 crossing over the Saint Louis Bay. It connects Duluth, Minnesota with Superior, Wisconsin. It is roughly 11,800 feet long with about 8,300 feet of that over water. The bridge’s namesake, Richard Ira Bong (September 24, 1920 – August 6, 1945), was a pilot during World War II and was named the United States “Ace of Aces” having shot down at least 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. The Highest and most Rebuilt - Smith Ave. Bridge, St Paul - Named after Robert Smith, Mayor, 1887 to 1892, 1894 to 1896, and from 1900 to 1908. The first bridge at this location, also called the High Bridge, was opened in 1889. It was constructed of wrought iron, and was supported by tall iron towers. The piers consisted of 4 leg towers and 2 leg bents. On the night of August 20, 1904, much of the bridge collapsed during a thunderstorm. A final investigation report was written by famous bridge designer C. A. P. Turner. It stated that a bridge failing from wind alone is a very rare event. The problem with this bridge was that the supporting towers were not anchored to the concrete foundations, but rather, were simply resting on the foundations and held in place by gravity. The storm wind was able to push one of the support towers off of its' foundation, causing the collapse. The high bridge was rebuilt and served traffic for nearly a century until the Silver Bridge disaster in Ohio in 1967 when a critical pin failed due to a materials defect. The rebuilt High Bridge was using the same pin connected truss spans. The worry was that these pins could not be inspected to know whether or not they were safe. As a result, in the summer of 1984, MN-DOT Commissioner, Richard Braun, made the decision to close the high bridge. The bridge was imploded

The south abutment was in an area polluted by a coal-to-gas processing plant, and a facility for storing and processing petroleum products. These uses effectively created a toxic waste site under the bridge, leading to a lawsuit and the removal of the contaminated soil. No relationship between these prior uses and the bridge failure has been claimed. The I-35W bridge was rated at 50. A rating of 50 or below is eligible for federal funds for replacement. There are many other such bridges in the state. At a rating of 50, the I-35W bridge was actually rated the highest in that category. In fact, there is another heavily used metro area Mississippi River crossing that scored worse than the I-35W bridge, and that is the Lafayette Bridge in Saint Paul. In 1999, an inspection of the Rock Island Toll Bridge over the Mississippi River in Newport found the structure to be in such bad condition that it was closed on the spot, and it has not been reopened since that time. • Have you heard the term “longears?” It is an endearing term used for donkeys and mules. Horses have small ears, donkeys and mules have long ones. Mules’ ears are not quite as long as donkeys. A hinny’s ears are shorter and much wider than donkey ears. • The tails of mules, donkeys and horses are different. Donkey tails are similar to cow tails with a tuft of hair on the end. They are not as long as the tails of horses and mules. Tails of horses and mules have long thin hair that goes all the way to the end of their tails. • When a horse is scared or “spooked,” it will run but a donkey will either stand and defend its ground (fight) or just simply “freeze.” So, what does a mule do? It can choose either one since it is part horse and part donkey! • Donkeys and mules are considered more intelligent than horses. When they “freeze” it is part of their “well-

tried and acquitted.

in the United States.

developed instinct for self-preservation.” Considered stubborn, most experts think they are just thinking over the situation at hand and are not likely to put themselves in danger. Horses allow themselves to be worked until they are exhausted; mules won’t. According to ruralheritage.com, “a mule will trust its own judgement before it trusts yours.” • Mules, as with most hybrids, were bred to join the desirable qualities of donkeys and horses. They get their strength and stamina from horses and their patience, sure-footed gate and intelligence from donkeys. • Even when working regularly mules and donkeys live longer than horses. A farm mule can work hard for 18 years, where a horse is only good for about 15. Mules that are well cared for and do lighter work have been known to live for 30-40 years. • Most donkeys and mules are used for work on farms and trail rides, either packing humans or cargo. They are considered “beasts of burden.” The term, defined as “animals used for transporting loads or doing other heavy work,” is also used for elephants and oxen. • Mules are used by the U.S. Army to carry supplies in Afghanistan and other places where the terrain is

ddifficult. • There are 185 breeds of donkeys, with about 441 million in the world today. Used in many pplaces around the world, China has the most with about 11 million. • George Washington is considered to be the “Father of the American Mule.” In 1785 he was gifted a large Spanish jack from King Carlos III of Spain. The next year, 1786, he received a Maltese jack and two jennets from French General Lafayette. He had his prize mares (horses) bred to his new jacks and became the first mule breeder in America. • Other famous Americans who “connected” with mules were: Buffalo Bill Cody, Mark Twain, Harry Truman, Ken Curtis and Ronald Reagan. Ken Curtis played Festus on the longrunning television western, Gunsmoke. • Not only were mules used in western ranch settings, they were used to help populate the western United States. Mules could pull loaded wagons 30 miles (48.3 km) per day as compared to wagons pulled by horses or oxen that could only average about five miles (8 km) per day. • The discovery of borax in Death Valley, California in the early 1890’s, lead to a major job for mules in the west. You’ve probably heard of 20 Mule Team® Borax. Sodium tetraborate is the scientific name for borax. • Borax is a “naturally occurring substance produced by the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes.” It looks like cotton balls! Nothing is added to borax for household cleaning and laundry use. The product is washed, dried and boxed. Borax is also used in other ways, such as in the glass

industry. • The removal and hauling of borax from Death Valley was not an easy chore. The nearest railroad junction for getting the product out of the valley to consumers was in Mojave, California, 165 miles (266 km) away. Mules were an important part of the solution for bringing borax to market. • The idea of using 20-mule teams started with William Tell Coleman’s borax company. (By the way, the 20-mle teams were actually 18 mules and 2 horses!) Two teams were hitched together to form a 20-mule team that was 100 feet (30.5 m) long. The teams pulled two 16-foot (4.9 m) long wagons loaded with borax and a 1,200 gallon (4542.5 l) water tank. The total weight pulled by each 20-mule team was over 36 tons (32659 kg). • Between 1883 and 1889, more than 20 million pounds (9,071,846 kg) of borax was hauled out of Death Valley by the 20-mule teams. The mule teams were eventually replaced by a rail spur. • The “20-Mule Team” symbol, still seen on boxes of detergent and other places, was first used in 1891 and registered as a trademark in 1894. • The Twenty Mule Team Museum in Boron, California, has been opened since 1984. The museum offers interesting information about the borax industry and the famous mule teams.

Oral Shareholder’s Agreement? Not So Much In Minnesota, there are laws that require a written document to create an enforceable agreement. If an agreement amongst shareholders is not memorialized in writing, it is basically considered nonbinding in the eyes of the law. Under Minnesota Stat. 302A.457, shareholders in Minnesota corporations are authorized to agree on matters concerning control, liquidation and dissolution of a company but the statute requires that any such agreement must be in writing and signed by all then-shareholders of the company. If owners of a company fail to memorialize agreements at the start of their business or throughout, conflicts can arise. To spare the costs of litigation to sort out those possible conflicts, owners can enter into a buy-sell agreement. A buy-sell agreement is an agreement wherein the co-owners of a company agree in writing as to what will happen upon the occurrence of certain trigger events such as death, termination, deadlock or other events. When one of the events occurs, it triggers an optional or mandatory buy-out by the company or other shareholders at agreed upon terms.

E Everybody b d lloves a clown! l !D Do you remember b your favorite? Here are a few interesting tidbits about these comical performers. • It’s believed that the word “clownâ€? has its origins in the Scandinavian word for “clod,â€? a clumsy oaf or lout. Even those in the Middle Ages had clowns in the form of court jesters, who were musicians, mimics, dancers, acrobats, and witty jokers. They frequently wore a hood with donkey ears and even a tail on the costume, meant to show they were not to be taken seriously. This hood and tail eventually became a three-cornered hat with bells at the ends. The early French clown was a happy, white-faced dancing clown called the Pierrot. • Clowns are characterized by their makeup and garb. The “whitefaceâ€? has a face completely covered in white makeup, with the eyebrows, nose, and mouth painted in red and black. He is usually the one in command of any situation‌he’s the bossy one! The Auguste clown’s face makeup is pink, red, or tan, and facial features are exaggerated in size. The mouth and eyes often have a thick outline of white. His clothes are either too big or too small and he usually wears suspenders. The Tramp or Hobo is the “low man on the totem pole,â€? the one consigned to cleaning up after the other clowns. He usually has a sad pink or tan face with a makeup beard, and wears a tattered and patched sloppy suit. A character clown is one who dresses like a specific occupation – a doctor, policeman, sailor, pirate, rodeo cowboy, what have you. • One of the many characters created by comedian Red Skelton on his 1960s weekly television variety show was the tramp clown Freddie the Freeloader. Freddie lived at the city dump and slept on the local park bench. At age 16, Skelton was a performer with a circus where his father had been a clown, and copied his father’s makeup for the TV program. • One of the

763-218-0033 - WWW.TIDBITSTWINCITIES.COM

w world’s best known clowns was Emmett Kelly, who ggot his start in 1920 as a circus trapeze performer. In tthe 1940s, he was best known as a sad hobo named Weary Willie, with the Ringling Brothers Barnum & W Bailey Circus. He was performing an afternoon show B iin Hartford, Connecticut in 1944 when a deadly fire broke out that killed 168 and injured over 700 others. This tragedy became known as “The Day the Clowns Cried,â€? and Kelly’s picture was featured in newspapers in his tramp costume, carrying a bucket of water. Kelly left Ringling after 14 years and later became the mascot of the Brooklyn Dodgers. • Bozo the Clown was created during the 1940s for a children’s book and accompanying record. He first appeared on television in 1949, which at its peak in the 1960s, was seen in 50 million U.S. homes every week. His popularity spread worldwide and there were Bozo TV shows in many countries including Mexico, Thailand, Australia, Greece, and Brazil. It’s estimated that more than 200 different actors have played this clown with the white face and red hair and nose. • The McDonald’s restaurant chain introduced Ronald McDonald in 1963. Willard Scott was a Washington, D.C. radio personality who also played Bozo the Clown on a local TV station. He became the first Ronald in the initial TV spots. Scott went on to serve as the Today Show’s weatherman for many years. Surveys indicate that 95% of American school children recognize Ronald McDonald, second only to Santa Claus. • Not everyone loves clowns – some have a terrifying fear of them. Those suffering from this are said to have coulrophobia.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles

Will Social Security be Your Only Income? Many seniors have only Social Security for income when they retire: 22 percent of married couples and 47 percent of unmarried people have no additional income. Maybe it’s a matter of not having saved over the years, or maybe it’s having lost everything in recent years due to layoffs and unemployment. But if you have

five more years until retirement, there are steps you can take now to make living on only Social Security a bit easier. ♦ Clear off your debts, especially your credit cards and vehicle. If possible, pay off your home or at least get the balance down. Keep your credit score high in case you need a loan for a large purchase -- the interest rate will be lower. ♦ If you own your home, look at long-term maintenance. If you’ll need a new roof in the next five years, do it before you retire. The same goes for big-ticket items like appliances, central air conditioning and furnace. ♦ If you’re willing to move, investigate states that don’t tax Social Security income and/ or have a lower cost of living. Assume that retirement won’t mean actual retiring. Be prepared to take a part-time job

Buy Early Bird Tickets Now! At Rockwoods Grill or online at:

www.rockwoodsjamfest.com somewhere. You’ll be able to earn a bit before it cuts into your Social Security benefit at the rate of one dollar for every two you make. The Social Security Administration no longer sends out the annual statement of earnings, but you can get a ballpark estimate online of what your future income will be. You can open a MyAccount, or you can use one of the calculators to estimate. Before you make the jump and quit work, do a test experiment for at least six months. Spend only the amount you would receive under Social Security. Create a strict budget and stay with it. Can you do it? It will be better to know sooner rather than later.

▲ For one week in April of 1964, the top five songs on the Billboard chart were all by The Beatles. That also was the year that the band had a whopping 31 songs on the charts. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

▲ The 1950s TV show “The Adventures of Superman” starred George Reeves, and for the rest of his short life he was best known for that title role. After his untimely death at the age of 45, he was buried in the same suit he wore as Clark Kent on the show.

▲ Noted industrialist John D. Rockefeller was the son of a notorious con man, William Avery Rockefeller.

▲ Collective nouns are fascinating, especially when one kind of animal has multiple ones that can be used. Take ducks, for instance: A group of them can be called a flock, a badling, a brace, a plump, a sord or a waddling. If you see them on water you can call them a bunch, a paddling or a raft; and a group of ducks flying together is known variously as a skein, a string or a team.

▲ It was famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright who made the following sage observation: “Many wealthy people are little more than janitors of their possessions.”

▲ There is a species of frog found in Australia with an odd method of reproduction. It lays eggs like other frogs, but this particular frog keeps the eggs in its stomach, hatching them internally. When the baby frogs are fully developed, they emerge into the world via the adult frog’s mouth.

▲ Some researchers believe that those who drink large quantities of coffee on a daily basis are self-medicating for depression.

▲ If for some reason you have a hankering to see the world’s biggest tire, you’ll need to head to Detroit (fittingly, I suppose). Located near the Detroit Metro Airport, the 80-foot Uniroyal tire weighs in at a whopping 12 tons. This attraction was created for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, where it served not only as an advertisement for the Uniroyal brand, but also as a Ferris wheel for the entertainment of attendees. In 1998, the company created the world’s largest nail -- measuring 11 feet long and weighing 250 pounds -- and used it to pierce the giant tire. It was another advertising stunt, of course; this time to promote Uniroyal’s puncture-resistant tire.

▲You might be surprised to learn that the hamburger didn’t originate in the United States. States In fact, fact it was early Turkic people called the Tatars who first came up with the idea. When they had low-quality beef, they discovered that shredding it and patting it back together improved the flavor and texture.

Horses, donkeys, and mules are similar, related animals. The biggest differences are in their chromosomes. (Now, if you want to study the genetics, research it elsewhere, not in Tidbits!) • Horses have 64 chromosomes; donkeys have 62. When mated they produce mules or hinnies that have 63 chromosomes. A mule is the offspring of a mare (female horse) and a jack (male donkey). The offspring from male horses (stallion) and female donkeys (jinnets) are called hinnies. Most people just lump mules and hinnies together and call them mules. (We’ll call them mules in most of this article.) • Mules are hybrids, each having one donkey and one horse parent. They can be male or female but they can’t reproduce because of the odd number of chromosomes; they are sterile (99.9% sterile). Very rarely, 1 in 1 million, female mules have given birth but no male mule has ever been known to sire a little one. Male mules actually need to be gelded or castrated so they are more sociable, mild mannered and, hence, safer for their handlers. • Other names used for mules and hinnies are: Johns or Jacks (male) and Mollies or Jennys (female).
