Getting Around in 2014
Submitted by Commute Solutions of Anoka County 2014 is an exciting year for transportation, with many new services and amenities being added to the existing infrastructure in Anoka County and the Twin Cities region! Here are some highlights a few of the exciting changes ahead. _____________________________________ Metro Transit Greenline - Opening 2014 The Central Corridor, or "METRO Green Line", light rail line is set to open in 2014. The 11-mile line will connect downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis, with the eastern-most station being St. Paul's newly renovated Union Depot, and the western-most station being Target Field in Minneapolis. Riders will board the line at any of the 18 stations along the route, five of which connect to the Hiawatha LRT, or "METRO Blue Line", as well as the Northstar Commuter Rail. Green Line trains are scheduled to run every 10 minutes during peak travel periods, with a travel time of approximately 39 minutes between downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis. ________________________________________ Highway 65 Commuter Bus Service to Minneapolis Fall 2014 Beginning in fall 2014, commuters who travel Highway 65 to downtown Minneapolis will have a new bus option available. Comfortable, coach-style commuter buses will provide service during the morning and evening rush hours. The new Route 865 will offer express service into the heart of downtown, with stops planned in East Bethel, Ham Lake and Blaine. The service will be provided by Metro Transit, the regional transit service provider. Buses will be able to travel on the shoulders, passing vehicles stuck in traffic – making commuting to downtown Minneapolis faster and less stressful. Take the bus and save money on parking, gas, and other auto related expenses. ________________________________________ Anoka Northstar Commuter Rail Station A New Parking Option - A new, three-story parking ramp will open at the Northstar Commuter Rail station in Anoka in 2014. The ramp is located on the south side of the rail station, and will have space for 344 vehicles once completed. The ramp will include a pedestrian overpass to allow easy, and safe access to the north side of the station. The ramp will be owned by the city of Anoka, and operated and maintained by the Metropolitan Council and Metro Transit. ________________________________________ Telework: The "No Commute" Commute Option If you live or work in the Midwest, to say that this winter season has been a rough one would be an understatement! Cold, snow, more cold and more snow - it has been brutal, and just keeps coming. The latest cold-snap and round of winter storms left much of the Midwestern and Atlantic states buried under several inches of snow with temperatures reaching well below zero, making daily commutes challenging if not impossible. One commuting option that allows employees to continue working no matter what Mother Nature throws at them is teleworking. "Telework Week" will be a time when employers and employees are encouraged to give teleworking a try at least one time during a designated week in the fall. Legal Bits MINORITY SHAREHOLDER Nobody goes into starting a business thinking they’ll run into conflicts with their business partners, but unfortunately anticipated or not, conflicts in business arise. This is especially true for small business owners who may suddenly find themselves in a tense business relationship with minority shareholders for a variety of reasons. Sometimes a minority shareholder dies and leaves his or her interest to a third party, or sometimes the natural evolution of a business means partners come and go. Sometimes though conflict comes from other actions. When a firm’s majority shareholders take action that pressures minority shareholders to sell their stakes in a company, that is considered a “freezeout”. Majority shareholders can make a variety of moves that a court would consider freezeout tactics, such as the termination of minority shareholder employment or a refusal to declare dividends. Freeze-outs usually occur in closely held companies where majority shareholders have much closer interactions in running a company. Under Minnesota law, minority shareholders have significant rights in freeze-out situations that can include the right to force a buy-out of their interest by the company or other shareholders. Minority shareholder freeze-out claims can be complicated to sort out and involve a complex set of laws that require business expertise. BEER (continued) TO PEE OR NOT TO PEE Drinking beer makes the drinker urinate a lot— much more than drinking an equal amount of water or juice. The number of trips a beer drinker makes to the bathroom has nothing to do with the amount of liquid consumed. It has to do with something called anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) produced by the hypothalamus in the brain. ADH regulates urine production and the amount of water in the bloodstream, maintaining the balance between water and salt in the tissues. Alcohol inhibits the production of ADH, so the kidneys don't receive the normal signals from the brain. They go on drawing water out of the bloodstream at a constant rate because they are not told to stop. This dehydrates the body. That's why thirst is a main symptom of a hangover. A good way to diminish a hangover is to drink a couple quarts of water before going to bed. Coffee is not a good thing to drink after getting drunk because caffeine is also an ADH inhibitor, and coffee messes up the signals to the kidneys too. Coffee has never sobered anybody up. Drunkenness is caused by unprocessed alcohol in the blood, and nothing can remove it but time. Alcohol plus coffee equals a wide-awake drunk. Soda Fizzes; Beer Foams Why does soda fizz whereas beer foams? It’s caused by the chemical processes that occur during fermentation. Fizzing and foaming both involve carbon dioxide rising to the surface, but soda pop is not fermented as beer is. Brewer’s yeast feeds upon the sugar in the ‘wort’

• The focal point of Irish social life is the pub pub. This is a term derived from ‘public house.’ At pubs, beer is served by the pint or the quart, which are abbreviated ‘P’ and ‘Q’ on the patron’s bar tab. Bred for pulling heavy wagons or sturdy plows, the horses are known for being strong, patient, and docile. • The breed began with a strain of Flemish horses that were imported to Scotland and bred to local mares. The term ‘Clydesdale’ was first used in 1826, and the first official registry of Clydesdales appeared in 1877. Between 1885 and 1945, about 20,000 were exported to other countries, especially Australia and New Zealand. • Originally, they were short and stocky animals. By 1940, breeders were working hard to increase the physical size of Clydesdales, turning the breed from a compact horse to a large stately horse that looked more impressive in parades. • Conscripted for use during World War I, their numbers tumbled drastically. Increasing mechanization led to further decline in the population. Soon they were rare. By the mid-1970s, there were fewer than 900 breeding Clydesdale mares in all of the United Kingdom. Today, their numbers have increased, although there are still fewer than 20,000 registered worldwide. • Of the approximately 4,000 Clydesdales that currently live in the U.S. and Canada, about 250 belong to Anheuser-Busch, making it one of the largest herds of Clydesdales in the world. They are bred in Missouri not far from the Anheuser-Busch brewery, and turn out about 15 new foals per year. His son August Busch took over, but then disaster struck: Prohibition. For years the

brewery hung in there, squeaking by on sales of yeast and a nonalcoholic beverage. • When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, a celebration was called for. August’s son (August Jr.) had recently purchased a team of magnificant Clydesdales as a gift for his father, and they garnered so much attention that August Sr. knew he could spin a major media spectacle out of them. • He had a gleaming beer wagon and six magnificent Clydesdale horses delivered from St. Louis to New York City where they paraded up Fifth Avenue with 10,000 people following. At the very moment Prohibition was repealed, employees handed a legal beer to Governor Al Smith, who had constantly lobbied for repeal of Prohibition. The brewery got pages of free publicity from this spectacle, and has been associated with Clydesdales ever since. • Anheuser-Busch is the largest brewing company in the U.S., providing about half of all beer consumed in the country.
COMPARING HOSPITAL INFECTION RATES The Medicare Hospital Compare website now provides information about hospital safety into two areas that are especially important to seniors: prevention of Clostridium difficile infections and methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections. It gathered this information through the National Healthcare Safety Network at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. C. diff, as it’s called, can be lifethreatening, as it causes severe diarrhea, which causes dehydration. It can develop after taking a course of antibiotics or being in a hospital. The spores that cause the illness can stay on surfaces -- bed railings, counters, telephones -- for months. According to the Mayo Clinic, more than a half million people get C. diff every year, and it’s very difficult to treat. Seniors age 65 and older are 10 times more susceptible to C. diff. MRSA isn’t a walk in the park either. It’s a staph infection that resists the antibiotics usually used to treat it. The infection can spread all over the body. It’s usually seen in people who have been in hospitals or healthcare settings, or who have had invasive procedures. In other words, both of these illnessesare serious and potentially lifethreatening. If you have your choice of hospitals for a procedure, don’t you want the one that’s more likely to keep you safe from infections? • Ermal Cleon Fraze, born in 1913, grew up to found a tool and die company in the mid 1940s called Reliable Tool and Manufacturing Company. He invented a wide variety of products for clients including General Electric, Ford, and even NASA. But his most famous invention came as a result of a picnic in 1959. • Ermal had brought plenty of beer to the picnic, but he had forgotten the can opener, which, at that time, was the only way to crack open a cold one. He was forced to resort to opening the cans using the bumper of his car. “There oughta be a better way,” he thought to himself. • Several months later, he couldn’t sleep, so he got up to spend a few hours puttering in his workshop. The result of his tinkering was the first pop-top pull-tab can. He received a patent for it in 1963, selling the invention to Alcoa. The first customer to use the new pull-tab can was the Pittsburgh Brewing Company, makers of Iron City Beer. By 1975, 75% of U.S. breweries were using them.
A CRUCIAL INVENTION
