Letters sent by M. A. Castrén
Matthias Alexander Castrén (1813–1852) was by far the most significant Finnish linguist of the 19th century. In addition to being a linguist he was also a multidisciplinary scholar. The present volume brings together all the currently known letters written by Castrén, both official and unofficial. Most of the letters date from the years he spent in the field, but there are also letters written in Finland before and after his expeditions. Altogether, this volume contains 231 letters. Matthias Alexander Castrén left behind a huge corpus of field data. After returning from his expedition in 1849, Castrén actively started making preparations for his academic future and personal life. In January 1850, he became engaged. The present volume contains the letters exchanged between Castrén and Natalia Tengström. This intensive correspondence gives new insights into the persons of Castrén and his bride, as well as the role the Tengström family played in the intellectual circles of Finland. The Galician Catalogue typologically records Galician tales within the European oral tradition. It orders them under the internationally recognized ATU (Aarne–Thompson–Uther) index system, uses regional catalogues classification, and includes new cataloguing proposals for uncatalogued ethno-texts. Galicia's rich narrative tradition of the past has now practically disappeared, which has led the editor to also index tales of which there is only one version.

Versification describes the marriage of language and poetic form through which poetry is produced. Formal principles, such as metre, alliteration, rhyme, or parallelism, take precedence over syntax and prosody, resulting in expressions becoming organised as verse rather than prose. The aesthetic appeal of poetry is often linked to the potential for this process to seem mysterious or almost magical, not to mention the interplay of particular expressions with forms and expectations.
