Awsum School News Hudson Park High

Laai’qah Bedford matriculated in 2021 at Hudson Park High and was announced as the Eastern Cape’s top learner from the Class of 2021.

Congratulations Laai’qah. Were you expecting the results, or did they take you by surprise? I would say it was a combination of both. I expected some of my results, but others caught me by surprise. I knew I did well, well enough to get distinctions because I could feel that I wrote competently. However, I did not for a second think that my marks for Physics and Accounting would be in the high 90s.

What was your greatest challenge in matric? My greatest challenge was definitely self-doubt. I believe this stemmed from fear. I have always achieved my academic goals in lower grades so I was just afraid that I would not reach them when it mattered most, seeing that I needed to do well to get into my desired course at university.

Who is your role model and why? As cliché as this may sound, it is without a doubt my mother. She is a single mother who raised two children on her own. I have witnessed her struggle, yet she never gave up. She shows strength and resilience in the face of adversity. It is because of her that I refuse to give up on my desires and dreams.

What kind of encouragement did you have and from whom? I received encouragement from one of my best friends, Musa Jaxa. We frequently have conversations expressing our goals for the near and far future. Whenever I lacked motivation and the drive to do what was required of me, he would always remind me why I am doing it. He would also remind me of the consequences, should I not perform the way I needed to. Tell us the study method your used that made you receive top marks? The study method is called active recalling. This consisted of frequently quizzing myself using past papers, making use of flash cards and “teaching” the work to a group of students that was not there. Active recalling also entails spaced repetition and interleaving, all of which can be explained by YouTube videos.

What is your favourite subject and why? My favourite subject is Mathematics. I would rather do 10 pages of maths than a single essay for English. Numbers, although sometimes challenging, come easy to me. I find satisfaction in solving long mathematical problems or questions.

Who was your favourite teacher? My favourite teacher was my Business Studies teacher, Mrs Poovan. She was a motherly figure to me at school. I despised Business Studies because I do not enjoy subjects that are content heavy and Business Studies has an immense number of facts, but Mrs Poovan somehow made the subject enjoyable. She really went above and beyond for her students and made the content easier to study. Mrs Poovan wholeheartedly believed in all her students and pushed us to achieve our best in Business Studies.

What are you going to study in 2022 and why? I have decided to study for a degree in Actuarial Sciences. It is my love for numbers that steered me down this pathway. From what I have heard, it is a difficult course, but I do enjoy a challenge. What is your message to the Class of 2022 who want to achieve the best like you did? The most important advice is to manage your time extremely well. You must always be aware of what is required of you, what is due when, what you are going to study and on which day, how much time you are going to spend doing whatever homework or assignment and so forth. The more organised and detailed you are when it comes to planning your days and weeks, the better.

You will also need to live a balanced life. As important as your results are, you cannot expect to work every waking moment towards it. I would suggest that you make time for rest, family and friends, activities that bring you enjoyment and exercise. This helps in preventing you from burning out sooner than you expected.

Lastly, surround yourself with friends who have goals similar to yours. There will be days where you have no motivation and drive to study. This is where those friends come in handy as you can then feed off of their discipline and motivation to kickstart your own again.
