Since Saga is rich in natural resources, people have settled in this prefecture since prehistoric times. There have also been cultural exchanges with other countries such as China and South Korea, from which the technique of porcelain production was adopted and developed as a unique high art, spreading to other countries in the name “Arita Porcelain”. Saga is one of the first prefectures adopting the industrial technology from Western countries, such as the iron smelting machine and steam engine, in order to develop its own industry.

Car Driving a Car in Japan

In Japan, cars drive on the left-hand side of the road, and traffic rules and etiquette are very strict. For example, drivers must strictly comply with road signs and traffic lights. There are some important things everyone should know and rigidly follow:

Important Traffic Rules and Etiquette Priority is always given to those turning left.

In Japan, cars must always give way to the left no matter what. WAIT

At certain crossroads, there is no green light for a left turn.

Most of the roads in the Saga prefecture have two lanes. When a traffic light is red, cars will line up in a single line. There is a lane for turning right approximately 20-50 meters before a white stopping line. If right turns are required, cars must change the lane and wait for the green light. When the light turns green, do not rush! Slowly drive to the middle of crossroads and wait until oncoming cars pass by before turning.

At every traffic light, there is no left turn on red

WAIT

In case cars want to turn left at traffic lights, it can be done only when the light is green as there is no free left turn in Japan.

WAIT

Stopping line and temporary stopping signs

Drivers must not take these for granted as roads in Saga are fairly narrow. Moving across a stopping line may cause an accident and make cars on the other side cars find it difficult to turn. Temporary stopping signs are often seen at junctions or the top of the streets where cars are supposed to stop for at least 2-3 seconds to observe other cars, potential bicycles, and pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Car Parking

S A G A

Traffic Signs Most traffic signs are universal, except for some containing Japanese characters such as:

Fly To Find It is true that each place inspires different feelings. Throughout our fifteen days in Saga, this small prefecture gave us a number of great experiences and impressions, from beautiful attractions and fertile nature to traditional culture and Japanese characteristics. During our stay, we received a warm welcome and great support from Saga Prefectural Tourism Federation. Although it might not be under the light yet, Saga has many hidden charms and specialties. When we don’t take the little things in life for granted, there is always something worth exploring. The expression: “Do not believe what they tell you, go and see for yourself!” is very true in the case of Saga. We suggest you go there and discover it for yourself. You might find some things even more interesting than we did. Who knows? With the guidebook “tiewlasud Saga” as your companion, you won’t be disappointed. When you return from your visit.
