Measure and cut a 32-inch-long piece of nonadhesive shelf liner. Fold the piece in half, and then cut it down the center to make two 16- x 24-inch rectangles. Stack the pieces on top of each other. (When gluing the stones, the adhesive will seep through the top piece of shelf liner.)

Using your computer, create a large letter for a template, and print it out. We used a 700-point type size to create the “B” shown here. Use utility scissors to trim out the letter, and center it on the piece of shelf liner. Trace the letter onto the liner using a permanent marker; remove the template.

1. Use a handsaw to cut a 2 x 4 x 6 deck railing to your desired length; ours is 19 inches long. (The railing piece comes with precut grooves.) Sand the cut edges smooth. 2. Apply primer (#164759) and paint on all sides; allow each coat to dry. We used Valspar Signature Colors, Creative Ideas for Color, Wild Grape CI 212, semi-gloss. 3. Position the railing with the flat side down. Place glass containers filled with flowers or candle votives in the grooves.

1. Roll a length of bubble wrap (#274909) until you reach your desired bolster diameter. Secure the roll with masking tape (#236989). Use scissors to trim the length for a shorter bolster; for a longer bolster, place two rolls side by side. 2. Use a flexible tape measure to check the length and circumference of the roll. Add 6 inches to the circumference and 16 inches to the length to determine the fabric size needed. 3. Use scissors to cut an 84-inch drapery panel (allen + roth, #18337) to fit the roll. 4. Center the roll parallel to the inside cut edge of the panel. Secure the edge to the roll using self-adhesive squares (#20045). Completely wrap the roll. Secure the top edge of the panel with self-adhesive squares. 5. Hem unfinished edges by rolling them to the inside and securing with a hot-glue gun. Tie off each end, candywrapper style, with jute twine (#66510).

Are You a Mosquito Magnet? Try these tips to keep the bugs at bay. (1) Wear light-colored clothing. Mosquitoes appear to be attracted to darker clothes, which trap body heat and increase your appeal. (2) Check your feet. Believe it or not, they also seem to like the smell of dirty socks. Other scents that make them swoon: sweat, soaps, and perfumes. (3) Can the beer. In a limited study, mosquitoes bit more people who’d had beer than those who hadn’t. (Sorry!)

Ancient cultures thought the bright Dog Star, Sirius, added its heat to the sun’s for 40 days, intensifying drought and discomfort. Today, the dog days of summer run from July 3 to August 11, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Help your own dog beat the heat by keeping its bowl full of cool H20!

All foods will stick if the grill isn’t clean—and if you don’t use a brush, no other gadget will help. It always amazes me that people don’t clean the grill. You wouldn’t cook in a skillet, not clean it, and then use it a week later. But that’s what you’re doing when you skip a grill cleaning. Bird’s the Word

Wondering what’s hot (besides the weather!) this summer? Look to the sky for inspiration. Birds of all shapes and sizes are flocking together for this natural trend. For a quick change, try one of our favorites: 28 - to 48 -inch drapery rod, STYLE SELECTIONS, #315318. (Availability may vary by store.)

1. Make sure the surface you are covering (whether a piece of furniture, door, or wall) is clean. Carefully peel the trunk of the cherry blossom wall decal (#71849) from the paper backing. Leave the other sections of the decal on the backing until you are ready to place them. 2. Lay the tree trunk section of the decal on the surface. Working from the center out, gently press the decal to the surface, smoothing out any wrinkles. You may need to trim the decal with utility scissors when placing on an uneven surface (such as the drawers shown). The decals are removable, so you can reposition them until you get the desired look. 3. Add the leaves and remaining sections of the decal. Be sure to align the pieces when you move from one surface to the next so the image looks continuous.

Green and red are complements, as are yellow and purple. complex schemes are created using three or four colors that are equidistant on the color wheel. For a more subdued shade of black that incorporates gray, try Blindfold. YELLOW Draw inspiration from nature by creating a bright, sunny room that will perk you up even on the dreariest of days. Fresh yellows, such as Tulip from the Laura Ashley Home collection, revitalize a room and make it a cheery escape. Richer tones, such as Buttered Toffee, also bring warm energy to a room but allow for deeper color.

RED If you want to ignite excitement in a room—perhaps your kitchen or dining room—fire up the walls with Radiant Red or Bright Red.These intrepid colors give off energy that can inspire you to cook a five-course meal and encourage your guests to let lively conversation flow while they dine. If you like the idea of red in your home’s palette, but you’re not ready for an absolute crimson, try a cooler shade that contains more blue and purple, such as Montpelier Red Velvet. ORANGE Known to stimulate appetite as well as energy, fresh shades of orange, such as Ripe Pomegranate and Roasted Pumpkin, enliven your walls with brilliant color that excites the senses. For a paler yet invigorating shade, try Orange Ochre or Homestead Apricot.

in High Point, North Carolina, was looking forward to his sophomore year but was concerned about fixing up an apartment almost twice the size of his freshman dorm room. With help from the Lowe’s Creative Ideas design team, his place turned out to be more than just hand-me-down furniture and posters. “We wanted an entertainment center, and I wanted stuff I could use after I move out at the end of the year,” says Mark. After talking with Mark and seeing the space, designer Tiffany Burgess began sketching—keeping storage, personality, and practicality in mind. With only a few weeks of summer left, she headed to High Point to pull together this decked-out apartment for Mark and his three roommates.

the makeover by putting in some valuable hours before arriving on campus. Tiffany spent an afternoon at Lowe’s with Mark, deciding on paint colors and picking up project supplies. To save time and to have ample space to spread out and work, the team built a few projects before move-in day.

To create the TV stand, we attached the two-drawer base to a horizontal shelf using mending braces. For a seamless appearance, apply spray primer to the braces. To construct the side tables, we attached pre-made table legs to a round panel using straight-top plates.

A peg-board panel is the ultimate in organization, which is why Tiffany chose the versatile material to create a one-stop drop-off for all the boys’ gear. Bungee cords, from the hardware department, serve as fun and multifunctional ways to hang sunglasses, hats, and other necessities. The sturdy bench below provides a place to change shoes or drop books, while the inside stores a filing system for midterm papers and tests the students want to keep.

A desk lamp with a flexible arm provides extra task lighting for late night study sessions.

Tiffany created an inexpensive desk using a pair of unfinished sawhorses and a sheet of plywood; it can travel with Mark anywhere he moves. Painted with white high-gloss paint and several coats of polyurethane to make it more durable, the plywood is secured to the sawhorses with wood screws. 12 9

After putting fresh sheets and a new comforter on the bed, Mark hung a pair of deep brown thermal curtain panels over the bedside window. The Thermaweave panels block out 99.9% of UV rays and can save up to 25% on heating and cooling costs, saving the students energy dollars and allowing Mark to sleep in on Saturdays.

The cocktail table and chairs are weather resistant so Sarah doesn‘t need to haul her furniture inside.

“For less than $1,000 we created the patio and pergola for the outdoor room. Then we added lighting, furniture, and accessories," says Lillian, Creative Ideas designer. 32

When Sarah bought her first home, she was just as excited about sprucing up the backyard as she was about decorating the inside. Her big idea was to transform the plain concrete pad into a cozy spot for relaxing and entertaining. We suggested an overhead structure that allows light without obstructing the view of the backyard from indoors. Working with Creative Ideas designer Lillian Martin, Sarah created a space that grants every wish on her list. The yellow and black stain colors let the pergola stand out from the home while still echoing the natural tones found in the wooded landscape. The area was covered with pavers, and pavers were used to create the stone bases for each pergola post. Hanging planters filled with yellow and white blooms accent the color scheme and add a hint of summer. And thanks to the warm climate and addition of ceiling fans, Sarah and her friends can enjoy the new outdoor room almost year-round. “I can’t imagine living without the space,” Sarah says. “I use it almost every day. It’s become an extension of my home.”

Special Spigot Hidden behind the lattice in the center of the pergola, a rain-catcher system harvests rain from the home’s gutters. Sarah uses the rain for watering nearby plants. Creating the system requires a bit of plumbing know-how. See instructions on next page.

Wooden window boxes were painted and turned into hanging planters. To create your own, first drill pilot holes 6 inches in from each top corner of the window box, and then attach screw-in cup hooks. Attach two swag hooks 18 inches apart on a pergola beam, and hang the planter from cut pieces of chain attached from the swag hooks to the cup hooks on the planter.

Use it weekly? Store these items, such as movies, video games, or art supplies, in designated locations. Give each a special container or place in cabinets where they are out of the way but still accessible.

Rarely use it? Top shelves and storage bins kept under the bed are the perfect solutions for items you use less frequently, such as keepsakes and seasonal items.

Never use it? If you don’t use it, chances are you don’t need it. Consider gathering these items for charity donations or a garage sale.

Use it daily? Keep these necessities, such as backpacks and shoes, where they can be located easily, either in plain view or in cabinets like the openfront lockers shown on page 22.
