arch comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. This month can certainly be a time of transition in terms of weather. In all likelihood, colder temps and icy precipitation have invited themselves over for another spell before warmer weather RSVPs “yes” to our requests for a wardrobe change. It’s all about change, and it has me thinking about transitions of another sort. Both of this issue’s features are based, in part, on the willingness to embrace change, which can come by way of new zip codes, job titles and learning curves and even returns to diaper duties. On page 36, read about Wayzata resident Maha Abouelenein, who has lived and worked in the U.S. and the Middle East. She discusses the importance of “sharpening her saw.” She says, “You have to always think about being a lifelong learner … I have to constantly learn new things.” A healthy dose of inquisitiveness goes a long way when it comes to learning and opening the doors of opportunity and change. “If you have a sense of curiosity, you’re probably going to open yourself up to more opportunities, and you never know what you’re going to find interesting that could truly turn into a tremendous opportunity for you,” Abouelenein says. Being open to opportunities can be mean opening your heart, too. On page 46, discover the story of John and Lynn O’Neil, local parents to two adult children and two babies, born just days apart thanks to two Minnesota surrogates. We were invited to learn more about the family’s journey and get a peek into the children’s beautiful nursery, which features some unexpected design choices that remind us that cute and cool can coexist. Enjoy,

CELEBRATE THE LUCK OF THE IRISH

Photo: Chris Emeott

ST. PATRICK ’ S DAY— when it comes

to this day, many people become Irish, wearing a bit of green or having a beer. For people like me, I am Irish every day, so I take this day off! To best celebrate the snakes being driven from Ireland, I am a purist, and tradition is what I prefer. We cook corned beef, cabbage and potatoes, and I have some beverage suggestions to serve on this fun day. Stout is the way to go. Guinness, “the mother milk” of the Emerald Isle, is a must. Give Wexford Irish cream ale or Murphy’s Irish stout a try, too. For lighter

beers, Harp Lager or Smithwick’s (pronounced smiddicks) are a good bet. Magners could be the most popular and easiest to find.

Cider:

Cocktails: I have two signature St. Patrick’s Day cocktails: » Johnny Jump Up: Pour a shot of Irish whiskey over a glass with ice; fill it with Irish cider. » The Melon Ball: Add a shot of melon Schnapps, a shot of Haskell’s vodka and orange juice to a shaker. Mix, and pour over a tall glass with ice.

For some, you can’t have a true St. Paddy’s Day without a bit o’ whiskey. There are many to choose from, but any of the following would be great: Jameson, Bushmills, Tullamore D.E.W., 2 Gingers, Powers, Paddy’s, The Irishman and Redbreast. Each of these has the standard whiskey, aged whiskeys or flavored whiskeys.

HOME GOALS

Whether it is pairing down the closet or tidying the playroom, home organizing is the “to-do” we all have. “I just don’t know where to start” is a sentiment I hear frequently. Depending on the amount of organizing needed, it can be daunting to get started. Here is an acronym that might help you reach your organizing goals—HOME, meaning hone, optimize, materials and expertise. Hone down your possessions. Did you know that we typically only use 20 percent of what we own? Start reducing by pulling outdated, expired, worn, no longer fits and damaged items. Then move toward items you have multiples of or do not use. Next, pull things that no longer “spark joy” as coined by home organizer Marie Kondo. Finally, take another pass at everything, and reduce even more. Optimize every space. Make sure to use vertical space, too. Add another shelf in the closet, or install ceiling racks in the garage. Consider using the backs of doors with an over-the-door shoe organizer, or install magnetic boards. Don’t forget about under-the-bed storage. Finding the right materials to organize your items is key. Once you’ve paired everything down, you should have an idea for the types of organizing products you’ll need. Consider clear bins, so you can easily see the contents, or opaque containers, so you are not distracted by the items inside. Next, be sure to find proper labels, so you can easily identify

the contents. Pro tip: Invest in quality products because you’ll likely have these items for quite a while. Ask an expert. Consider working with a professional home organizer for a couple hours or to take on the entire proj-

SHAKE UP TREAT

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Even if you’re not Irish, can we admit that leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold give us a great excuse to celebrate? Other than a pint of Guinness, another popular way to indulge in St. Paddy’s Day cheer is with the infamous Shamrock Shake from a popular fast food burger joint. Few things are more instantly gratifying than a frosty, mint milkshake, but it does come at a price. Each small Shamrock Shake includes 460 calories and 63 grams of sugar. St. Patrick’s Day may only come around once per year, but, given the fact that most Americans already consume well over the recommended 30–40 grams of added sugar per day, we should consider some alternatives. Try this healthier version. It could not only satisfy your urge to splurge on St. Patrick’s Day, but every day throughout the year and fill you up with healthy energy-boosting ingredients. St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Shake Swap » 1 scoop vanilla protein powder » 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk » 1 cup spinach » ¼ of an avocado » ½ tsp. peppermint extract » ½ tsp. vanilla extract » ice » Lily’s chocolate mint baking chips

DIVERSIFYING THE JEWELRY INDUSTRY and making high fashion

brands more accessible is the mission of Minnetonka resident Becca Stein, owner of Lux by Minne Momma. Crafting affordable versions of designer jewelry, Stein says she began her business as a way to help others fulfill their dreams of owning luxury pieces. Sourcing her inventory, including designer bag charms, keychains and buttons, from brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior, she repurposes these treasures into new necklaces, bracelets and earrings. “I create authentic items without the astronomical price,” she says. As one who has always had an affinity for jewelry, Stein says Lux by Minne Momma was a way of combining all of her interests. “I love making people feel handsome or pretty and putting a smile on their face,” she says. With a background as a former graphic designer for a local jewelry store, Stein says her old role and her new endeavor with Lux represents, “The best of both worlds.” Gifted a vintage ring that wasn’t her style, Stein was inspired to transform it into a necklace to get some wear out of it. Satisfying her knack for creativity, she realized that she could do more. However, she needed to find a means of distinguishing herself as a designer. Sourcing her pendants through a variety of vintage and secondhand vendors that specialized in authenticating designer pieces, she began to collect luxury hardware. Though all designers are desired, Stein finds herself sourcing a lot of Louis Vuitton

and Chanel pieces. For Louis Vuitton, she says the market for more unique pieces is far vaster as the brand tends to feed into seasonal fads and trending color schemes, creating a wider audience. Because of this, there is more variety and an ever-changing uniqueness to the inventory. Whereas brands like Chanel opt for a more dainty, classic and versatile approach to design, she says. Uncovering a variety of shapes, colors and styles adds to the uniqueness of her one-of-a-kind creations. “They are very

affordable, but they are also timeless and speak for themselves,” customer Natallia West says. “They are subtle, and that brings value to me.” For customers, this versatility is also what keeps them coming back for more products. “Not only have I purchased two pieces for myself, I have gotten three other pieces for close friends,” Lacey Gale says. “I can honestly say that I frequent her site at a minimum [of ] three times per week and will continue to purchase her stellar designs.” With a passion for creating jewelry,

DOING GOOD

Honoring Her Wish Children’s cancer clinic is named after Wayzata’s Katie Hageboeck.

IT ALL STARTED WITH A WISH — and led to the creation of the Katie Hageboeck Children’s Cancer Research Fund Clinic located at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. The naming of the clinic, made official at a dedication ceremony in October 2021, honored the wishes of Katie Hageboeck, who in 1979, was nearing the end of a 16-month battle with leukemia. The story begins when the then 13-year-old Hageboeck, understanding that she was dying, asked her parents to donate the money she had been saving to purchase a red, 10-speed Schwinn bicycle. She wanted the donation to go toward helping children who had cancer. “Her wish was that other kids would get

28

better treatments, so they could live,” says Diana Hageboeck, Katie’s mother. The Children’s Cancer Research Fund, the recipient of Hageboeck’s donation, was then a little-known fund held at the University of Minnesota. Hageboeck says, “I can remember talking about it with other families as we waited in an alcove outside our sick kids’ rooms in the old Mayo building [The Mayo Memorial Building on the University of Minnesota campus was once part of Elliot Hospital].” These discussions weren’t lost on Katie, whose room was within earshot of the alcove. “Katie had been sick for 16 months,” Hageboeck says. “She had the best of care. The doctors fell in love with her, and she fell in love with her doctors.”

“We didn’t know it at the time,” Hageboeck says, “but Katie was being treated in not only one of the best facilities in the country, but one of the best facilities in the world. It’s where the first bone marrow transplant was performed. Katie’s was [approximately] the 50th.” A couple years after Katie died, Hageboeck and her husband, Norm, started a fundraiser called Dawn of a Dream in an effort to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. “We had never done anything like it, but we knew how to volunteer, and we had friends,” Hageboeck says. And? “Katie’s bike donation was that bee in the bonnet,” she adds. Since its inception, Children’s Cancer Research Fund donors have responded by donating

more than $100 million to the pediatric cancer program at the University of Minnesota and M Health Fairview. “What’s happened is hard to describe,” Hageboeck says. “It’s just such magic. I’ve had to look at a thesaurus when writing thank you notes, as you can only say ‘amazing’ so many times. So far, the best word I can come up with is ‘dumbstruck.’” And to think, it started with a 13-yearold donating her bike money, so that kids she didn’t even know could better fight a disease that would ultimately take her life.

SPRING FILLS MANY OF US with

the desire to shed heavy home décor and brighten up our spaces with goodness and light. While it’s tempting to have an “anything goes” mentality after a season of living buttoned up—in the literal and figurative senses—there are some easy suggestions to follow when it comes to home interior design. For a creative perspective, we talked with Sandy Mahoney, a home builder and award-winning designer and founder of Create Home, a retail furnishing store, design studio and remodeling showroom in Excelsior. What interior styles and colors will be on board for spring and summer? “Overall, we are seeing the desire for simplicity in home design and styling,” Mahoney says. “With furniture, art and accessories, that often means fewer pieces, artfully planned as a composition. Styles are often eclectic, with furniture leaning a tad contemporary, yet with a juxtaposition of unexpected pieces, even from a different style, woven in.” Mahoney recommends utilizing different textures, which is right on trend. “The key is to combine these different pieces and textures while achieving continuity. It’s easy to get messy— keep it simple,” she says. Per colors, are we going pastels or striking a more vibrant tone? “We are still seeing a lot of white—and loving it,” Mahoney says. She points to one of Benjamin Moore’s 2022 picks, Steam. “It’s a beautiful soft white,” she says. Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Spring color palette leans toward pastels. “I love that they are colors from nature that have a soft chalky feel,” Mahoney says. But this time of year, many of us yearn for a bit of color with nature serving as inspiration. “We also love green,” Mahoney says. “Greens really emerged a few years ago, and it continues to evolve. We don’t see that trend going away any time soon. Here, in Minnesota, with our gray winters, green is so fresh and has such energy.” While paint or other wallcoverings can bring in green tones, so, too, can plant life. “Live plants transform spaces,” Mahoney says. “The splash of color and organic feel are so comfortable.”

The creation and use of multi-functional spaces are picking up pace, according to Mahoney. “With the challenges we experienced since the pandemic, clients are reinventing bonus spaces, bedrooms and living areas into flex spaces and home offices,” she says. Attention to areas devoted to wellness is also important to some homeowners. “Requests for wellness spaces are pretty common these days, and we make it personal,” Mahoney says. “After all, we all have different physical and spiritual needs. Yoga, Pilates, massage therapy, exercise, meditation and prayer rooms are becoming a priority in design.” Clients are also seeking out sustainable materials. “It’s all about reducing negative impacts on the environment and focusing on health and comfort,” Mahoney says.

32

“The objective of sustainability is for us to look at products that reduce the consumption of nonrenewable resources and to minimize waste. At Create Home, we see this often in choices for floor coverings and countertops.” What emerging home décor and design trends does Mahoney embrace? “I just love the juxtaposition of styles,” she says. “It’s so fun to look at the variety of things clients pin and love … [and] finding a way to weave their favorites into a composition that is uniquely their own. Today’s trends allow so much freedom to combine different styles, and I love the art of pulling it all together.” Create Home, 312 Water St., Excelsior; 612.597.8900; createhome.net @createhomeexcelsior

hile hanging out with her sister, Maha Abouelenein’s phone rings. Journalist and author Katie Couric is calling. It’s just another normal day for this sought-after, successful entrepreneur. Wayzata’s Abouelenein has a wealth of stories about the places she’s been and the people she’s met—like how she met former first lady Michelle Obama and volunteered at the 2008 Democratic National Convention or the times she separately took comedian and television host Jon Stewart and actor Samuel L. Jackson on work-related visits to the pyramids in Egypt. “I always find myself in the weirdest places, meeting the craziest people,” Abouelenein says, noting that at last year’s U.S. Open tennis tournament, she introduced one of her clients to

her friend and CBS This Morning’s co-host Gayle King. But to appreciate Abouelenein’s engaging anecdotes, you should understand her sedulous intention to invest in meaningful relationships and bring value to people. Her influence spans 29 years in the public relations and communications spheres, where she’s the founder and managing director of Organizational Consultants and founder of Digital & Savvy. Additionally, she’s led global communication strategies for companies like Google (as an employee) and as a communications advisor to Netflix for the Middle East and the region of North Africa. We sat down with the raconteur and communications powerhouse to learn about her journey from Mankato

Abouelenein earned her bachelor’s and graduate degrees at MSU and moved to the Twin Cities, where she interned for Weber Shandwick and then briefly worked for General Mills until 1997 when her mother, Sawsan Abouelenein, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She helped launched several mobile networks in Egypt. “Cellphones were just being introduced across the Middle East and Africa, and I was writing the tenders to get those licenses and launch those projects,” Abouelenein says. “I was in the front seat of seeing all this new technology be introduced into the

Next, she built a public relations agency network for Weber Shandwick in the Middle East, supervising 19 offices. How? She knocked on the CEO’s door and offered something of value—the understanding of what it took for a U.S. company to open in the Middle East. With a goal helping people effectively communicate, Abouelenein launched Organizational Consultants, named after a firm her father had owned, working with U.S. companies that wanted to operate in the Middle East. “I was American, so I knew the American lingo, how U.S.

Abouelenein went to work for Google in Dubai as head of global communications and public policy, overseeing 18 countries in the Middle East. After that, she went back to running her company, serving Netflix, Careem (which Uber now owns), Deezer (a French online streaming service) and several technological communication companies. Her broad reach doesn’t end there

as it expanded after a friend recommended Crushing It, a book about personal branding by Gary Vaynerchuck, an entrepreneur and nonfungible token (NFT) and digital marketing guru. Abouelenein connected with him and offered to help set up an agency network in the Middle East. “Long story short—I met [Vaynerchuck], and for five years now, I’ve been running his communications,” she says. Abouelenein moved from Dubai to Minnesota during the pandemic. “I always thought I would come back to Minnesota eventually,” she says. “My mom and dad passed away, my sister’s still here, all my high school friends are still here and I love Minnesota more than anything,” she says. While Abouelenein works with influential people, celebrities, CEOs, sports icons and high net worth individuals, she remains steadfast in putting people before transactions. To that end, she maintains a three-point strategy: build meaningful relationships, create value and be a connector. “Everyone asks me, ‘How did you get to meet all these people?’” Abouelenein says. “First of all, I try to create value for them. I learn what they are trying to achieve, and then I ask myself, ‘How can I add value to them in that regard— what can I bring to the table that no one else can?’” When she goes to an event, Abouelenein is intentional about making the most of the experience by creating connections. “The reason I have so much joy doing my job is I love being a connector and bringing people together to create something unique,” she says. But she won’t simply introduce people to each other. “I need to know what is it that you want, what’s valuable. Then I have to talk to the other person to make

My husband and I are in our 50s and have been married for nearly three decades. We have two adult children (29-year-old son, Sage, and 22-year-old daughter, Enya). We also have mentored and opened our home to exchange students throughout the years. We moved to Minnesota four years ago from New York City to be close to family. My parents also live with us. We love multigenerational living and love having family close. We weren’t done expanding our family, and, through surrogacy, were able to grow our family by two more. Elvis was born on May 29, and his sister, Indie, was born three days later on June 1. A unique story to be sure. —Lynn O’Neil John and Lynn O’Neil certainly have a “unique story to be sure,” and the couple

opened its home to Lake Minnetonka Magazine to share how the rest of the story unfolded when it came to preparing a bespoke nursery that embraced the babies and held onto the loving tale of their arrival. “We wanted to start the babies sharing the same nursery space,” Lynn O’Neil says. “Since they were being carried by two separate surrogates, we hoped that sharing the room would nurture their bonding, so we needed a plan that made sense for two cribs, two bassinets, two rocking chairs and a changing table/dresser.” With names like Indie and Elvis, the babes certainly require a nursery that’s big on style and makes a bold statement. “Our journey is a little different,” O’Neil says, so she wanted a nursery that would reflect that uniqueness and a space where cute

and cool coexist and practicality doesn’t take a backseat. The O’Neils turned to Jeanne Anselmo of JJ Designs. She had worked with the family, completing extensive design work and orchestrating a 10,000-squarefoot addition to its 1920s home on Lake Minnetonka. (Some of her work at the O’Neil’s home garnered a first place in the 2019 ASID Design Competition.) “She has taken the time to really get to know all of us [and] appreciates our story, style and way of life,” O’Neil says. “We wanted the room to make sense with rest of the home décor-wise. She brought the

idea of black and gold, and my immediate response was, ‘Yes!’ She also suggested including constellations on the walls with hand-painted stars on the ceiling.” “I don’t know if it’s having lived in New York City for so long, but black and white has been our go-to colors for years,” O’Neil says. “My husband is one of the founders of The DOGPOUND fitness gyms in New York City and Los Angeles. The color décor of the gym is mostly black. Why not give the nursery some of the same vibe?” So, it was out with the ubiquitous pink and blue color story and in with elevated black, white and gold tones. “I presented

this direction because it did fit the wow factor, and this situation was far from traditional,” Anselmo says. “Also, babies see black and white before they see any color, so I figured it would be visually stimulating for babies, as well as adults.” Even the floor received an update and ended up being one of O’Neil’s favorite parts of the nursery. When the room was first renovated as a guest room, the original 1920s flooring was painted. “When it was going to be the new nursery, I just decided to add the black and edge the squares with gold to tie together the theme. I also painted the old wainscoting black,” Anselmo says. Luxe vibe aside, there is an element of practicality that must go into a nursery— after all—diapers! How did Anselmo master mixing an elevated style with practical elements? “We used a beautiful black and gold dresser as a changing table by just adding two changing pads on top,” she says.

Anyone with babies knows—they don’t sleep all the time, and they eventually get mobile and curious about life outside the nursery. A playroom is in order, and Anselmo had ideas for that room, as well. “We are incorporating black again, but since this space is right off the kitchen and the kitchen space is very much about texture rather than color, this space will be a bit calmer,” she says. The room features an animal print black, white and grey carpet with a black and white Italian sectional. “The color will come from some fun pillows and, of course, all the toys,” she says.

“At the entrance to the nursery hangs a sign that reads, ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars Do You Know How Loved You Are?’ … It makes me smile every time I look at it.”

elements I would consider to be ‘cute’ in this room other than the adorable babies that get to sleep there,” Anselmo says. “I do agree that the feel of the room is luxe,” O’Neil says. “All of the adults in the house love to spend time in the nursery. [Anselmo] was able to design a sophisticated nursery with a little edge. We just love it. Elvis and Indie are mesmerized by the stars on the ceiling and the ceiling fixture.”

our home is important, and the team at Evergreen Construction Company, Inc., feels the same way. Since being founded in 2003, the family-owned general contractor has worked across every city within the Twin Cities’ seven county area. While Evergreen’s core services include roofing, siding, windows and gutters, the team can also assist with exterior home design and storm damage repair or the installation of HD TV antennas and CeDUR Shakes. You need it—Evergreen team members can help. With Minnesota-based crews, who they’ve partnered with for decades, the team is tested and trusted. Regardless of the work involved, Evergreen has one standard it abides by throughout the project. “We haven’t done our job unless we’ve earned your referral.™” This is at the core of what Evergreen is, and this means constant attention to detail from beginning to end. Team members are also meticulous in their work, and this includes an extremely thorough jobsite cleanup. Homeowners attest to Evergreen’s commitment to excellence: “In August 2020, we had a golf ball-size hailstorm, causing damage to our roof and siding. We

knew we were in great hands from the beginning. [Sales manager Antti Laaksonen] was there the next morning checking on us ... He was there with us all the way from the first moments, helping through the insurance claim process, selection of materials, repairs and final touch-ups to make sure no detail was overlooked. [Owner Joe Hahs] was also available all the time and checked with us frequently during the whole process … He encouraged us to be “picky” and to point out any little detail we were not happy with … We strongly recommend Evergreen Construction to anybody considering doing a roof or siding repair.” With an eye toward the future, Evergreen, certified and educated through Solar Energy International, will begin offering solar panel installation services in Summer 2022 with the help of experienced solar installation technicians.

P OP P I N G T HE COR K on a bottle of bubbly can fill a

room with celebratory spirits. As we move into brunch season and springtime celebrations, let’s take a closer look at a Champagne’s lesser-known cousin. With the same richness and body of Champagne, crémant (pronounced kruh-maant) brings party vibes just the same—at a fraction of the price. To learn more about the sparkler, we spoke with The Wine Shop’s wine buyer Gary Seelen, who has Level 3 certification from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. What is crémant? Crémant is the name used for sparkling wine made in the same method of Champagne—often called traditional or méthode champenoise in other parts of France. [It is made in France and Luxembourg.] The term Champagne can only be used for sparkling wines made in the Champagne region of France. Crémants often use the same grapes as Champagne, however, the grapes or blends differ by region. Single varietal or blend rules are set by the regions. The two most well-known [varieties] crémant d’Alsace … and crémant de Loire [sometimes] blend in different grapes than those allowed in Champagne … What’s the production process? The traditional method was discovered in Limoux, France, in the Pyrenees more than 100 years before Dom Pérignon in Champagne, who often gets credit. Crémant is made in the same method as Champagne. [Briefly, the process includes fermenting still wine, usually in a barrel, followed by bottling the wine and inoculating it to start a second fermentation.] As the second fermentation occurs, the creation of alcohol releases [carbon dioxide], but it cannot escape the bottle, thus creating the bubbles. Sparkling wines will age in the bottles on the dead yeast cells over time, where the bottles are partially turned in the racks called riddling, creating the creamy texture you taste in

traditional method crémants. After aging on the dead yeast cells … the necks of the bottle are frozen, the yeast cells disgorged, and a small amount dosage—sugar and still wine—is added back to top off the bottles. How many crémants are there? Too many to count. [Many of them don’t make it to the U.S.] Does crémant run sweet or dry? It can be either. It depends on the amount of sugar added during dosage. The driest crémants will be topped with wine, no sugar added. How does crémant differ from Champagne? [It is] generally lighter, less PH, less acid and usually less time on the lees. How does crémant compare to prosecco? Proseccos are made in large, sealed tanks with [carbon dioxide] added in tank to help create bubbles. Crémants, similar to Champagne, are richer, creamier, less sweet and have a higher concentration of bubbles. Does crémant have the ability to age? They are meant to be [consumed] young; they will not age like Champagne, but three to five years is generally OK. What crémant optimal temperature? All sparkling [wines] should be served around 45–50 degrees F [the same temperature as Champagne].” How about food pairings? I always want to demystify it, make it accessible to everyone. People should drink what they like with what they like, however, there are some classic pairings. Oysters are

usually number one in people’s minds, but other shellfish work well—lobster, scallops, crab. [Consider] nonstinky cheese and salty foods, even potato chips. Why isn’t crémant as well known? Marketing—follow the money. The different regions that make crémants are more known for their still wines that can often age and can sell large quantities … A few of your favorite crémants? Alsace is number one for me—creamy and fresh with excellent rosé … How do we shop for a crémant? Ask your wine merchant for recommendations on what they carry. You can get great crémants between $15 and $25.
