STRAIGHT TALK FROM STEVE KUHL

Five signs your cedar roof may need some TLC 1

Let’s face it. Cedar roofs look great but owning one is a little scary. “Has it been damaged by hail?” “Will it blow off in a storm?” “I hear something chewing up there!” But despite what you may hear, your cedar roof is still one of the most beautiful and long-lasting products on the market. The only catch is you have take care of it.

Owner, Dad, Wood Roof Geek

That’s where I come in. My free, written estimate includes a thorough analysis of your roof. Bringing over 25 years of experience to the table, I will evaluate its’ condition to determine whether or not maintenance, repairs or replacement is the best option for you. Worst case scenario you get a free inspection from a true expert. Best case, we work our magic on your roof and add years to its lifespan.

Loose Nails & Staples

2

In fact, Kuhl’s Contracting is looked to for the evaluation and restoration of cedar roofs by more insurance companies, home inspectors, realtors and architects than any other company in Minnesota. Not to brag, but we are pretty awesome. Don’t take my word for it. Check out our talents at www.kuhlscontracting.com. Or ask around. We have probably done work for someone you know. I started this company in 1987. Since that time we have worked on thousands of homes around the Twin Cities. My approach to business has never wavered. Be honest, be reliable and do great work. As a result our list of happy clients grows daily.

here are times when I am reading articles for these pages or our sister publications throughout the Metro that a story will give me pause—whether it is the topic that steps to the fore, a quote that particularly resonates or the sources themselves who strike a chord. This issue is dedicated to beauty and style. And what is wonderful about those notions is that they can move away from conventional norms and embrace expanding ideas of what falls into the folds of “beauty and style.” This month, there are two articles—very different in nature—that encouraged me to pause and consider a few perspectives through a different lens. On page 18, we take a look at the growing number of women who are embracing their gray hair by ending the cycle of hair coloring. Earth-shattering news? Not particularly, but it’s interesting to learn that more and more women have turned their backs on the idea that gray hair is somehow the antithesis of beauty, youth, vitality, etc. Connecting with what makes you feel senses of freedom and joy within yourself—now that’s beauty and style. Turn to page 34 for my interview with KSTP-TV’s Chris Egert. Some readers might recall the story of Egert’s below-the-knee amputation, which was performed about five years ago. As April marks National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, we checked in with Egert and discovered how and why he decided to go public with his experience. “Since sharing my story, I’ve been contacted by hundreds of people and consulted dozens of others [about] what the amputation journey entails,” he says. Sharing a difficult personal experience in the name of reaching out and helping others along the same path—now that’s beauty and style. Until next month,

From sangria to a spritzer, there are many ways to repurpose wine. COMPELLING AND HEARTWRENCHING

Don’t be a Chicken

The Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley is a young adult novel that has it all—part coming-of-age, thriller, romance and family drama. The story is gripping, compelling and heart-wrenching with just enough hope. Daunis Fontaine is biracial and has spent her entire life with one foot in her white mother’s world and the other in her Native American father’s world, but the summer after her senior year tests her like never before. She’s called upon to help the authorities look into a string of suspicious deaths among the local Ojibwe tribe that she holds dear while also facing decisions about her future, her family and love. Boulley brings Daunis and her world fully alive in such a way that it will grab your heart and keep you hardpressed to close the book until you’re done.

Open Up Style Possibilities

When you open your closet door, do you feel excited to pick out an outfit or feel dread because of the disorganization? Second only to pantries, closet organizing is one of the most important places in your home to arrange because of the frequency of use. Culling through clothes and shoes prior to organizing is a great place to start. If clothes are newer than three years old, you may be able to sell them online or at a local consignment store. Pro tip: Donate to shelters, business attire nonprofits, churches or schools. Closet organizing systems are a worthwhile investment to optimize wall space. A shelf and a hanging bar are not sufficient for closet organization. Adding shelves, drawers and compartments offers greater storage flexibility. Pro tip: Don’t forget to add airtight shoe boxes because, as much as we hate to admit it, shoe odor can seep into clothing fabrics. Organize by color to reduce the amount of time it takes to search for particular pieces. A color-coordinated closet allows for a shift away from go-to items and toward variety in styling. Pro tip: Place colors that look best on you at the front of the closet, so you are more likely to wear them.

Gray’s Anatomy Stylists guide clients through color change. By Renée Stewart-Hester

April 2022

THERE IS A GROWING MOVEMENT

of women emboldened by shifting beauty standards to embrace their graying hair. Celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker and Andie MacDowell stepped out of quarantine with naturally silver coiffures. Actress Cynthia Nixon (AKA: Sex and the City’s Miranda Hobbs) eschewed her once-red tresses for a natural gray style, and the change was included in the show’s reboot And Just Like That … The world took note. Gray hair wannabes have discovered their soul-sisters on social media, where hashtags like #GrayHairDontCare, #SilverSisters and #GrayHairRevolution stoke camaraderie and acceptance. Master colorist Lindsey Yozamp, hair color director at Wayzata’s Juut Salon Spa, and hairdresser Sue Craig with Minnetonka’s Hair Proź Salon explain how they guide clients through the transition and what people can expect when they decide to embrace their gray hair.

iStock.com/PaulSimcock

Are more clients accepting their gray hair? LY: I am definitely seeing more women embrace their gray. There is less need to cover every piece. Many clients are choosing their natural base. We add in dimension to keep things blended and on trend. This prevents banding and outgrowth … With the hair color trends living tonally in ash and icy, now more than ever gray hair is desirable … Some say the COVID-19 pandemic led us to review our beauty standards and needs. LY: The pandemic gave women a chance to see what they were really growing. Many of my guests had no idea what their natural color even was. The social stigma around out-growth “roots” was gone for a moment, creating a transitional opportunity for change. How do you help clients through the process? LY: The first step to embracing your gray is cooling down your hair color. Changing the tone can be one of the more dramatic transitions and can help you decide if you

are headed in the right direction. After that, [eliminate] a permanent base color with a series of highlights and lowlights with an all-over demi gloss. (If you are thinking of going gray, consider a consultation with your colorist. It may take a series of services to achieve your goal.) What advice to you have for those considering it? SC: I always love encouraging change for my clients, but in these cases, I start with, “Relax. We are just exploring and gathering/exchanging information. We don’t need to do this today or even at your next visit.”

20

Once gray, do you encourage some color treatment to keep hair looking lively? LY: Once gray, most of my guests see me seasonally or twice a year. Often, we add highlights or balance out uneven color. Glossing and Aveda’s blonde revival system is a must ... eliminating unwanted gold and dullness. What if a client doesn’t like the result? SC: I reassure [them] that I can always take them back if anyone discovers, “I guess I’m not ready.” Because, oftentimes, they don’t realize what 25 percent or 70 percent gray [hair] will look like once a couple of inches reveals itself. That’s

the beauty of color … you can always change the direction or simply go back and try again in the future.

Ann Bailey

Ann Bailey stopped covering her gray hair about five years ago. “I had been coloring my hair for 20 years, and I retired and was traveling a lot, and it was becoming an inconvenience,” says the Minnetonka resident. She wanted to simplify her life and was curious, “What does my hair really look like after 20 years?” “It’s going to age you,” or, “You won’t like it,” some people warned her. “It made me delay it for a while,” Bailey says. But Craig eased her through the process, which took about a year to transition Bailey’s bob cut into her natural color. She’d walk into her appointments and say, “I’m not hating it,” as the transition progressed. “I knew I could always color it again, so why not just try it,” says Bailey, who discovered she is only about 50 percent gray, and her natural hair complements her skin tone in a better way. “I feel like I’m more like myself,” she says. “It’s freeing in a way. I don’t have to think about it anymore, and … it’s not aging.” For Kim of Excelsior, also a client of Craig’s, her experience was different— for now. During the pandemic, she felt it might be time to embrace her gray hair. Over the course of three appointments, Craig helped her make the change. Success? When Kim saw herself in a mirror, she felt she made the right decision. Flash forward to viewing a photo that someone had taken of her at a bonfire, and her mind changed. “I discovered I was just not ready,” she says. Enter Craig, who helped Kim revert to her former hair color. “Wait until you’re ready,” Kim says to those considering a transition. “And you can always switch it back.”

Try using a tinted moisturizer instead,” Phaxay says. One of their favorite spring products is the Tower28 Beauty SuperDew Highlighter Balm, which can be used on cheeks or the nose bridge to keep skin looking glowy and fresh. The pair reveals that, for upcoming warmer months, we will see plenty of pastel tone eyeshadows and bright orangey-red lip colors. An important lesson from the beauty gurus: Make sure to toss out all makeup that is beyond its expiration date. Using items beyond that date comes with a higher risk for makeup to harbor bacteria and cause skin irritation. Kent says, “If the texture, color or smell of the makeup is unusual,” then it may be time to toss it. And as a rule of thumb, “Your lipstick should absolutely not smell like crayons,” she says. That is the biggest telltale sign that your product isn’t usable. The co-founders have much more in their arsenal of beauty expertise. They advise people to use cleansing oil rather than makeup wipes. “The alcohol on those wipes dry out your skin and can leave a residue on your face. If you have to use a makeup wipe, make sure to rinse it first,” Kent says. Phaxay and Kent also recommend daily applications of vitamin C serum and SPF. This will help brighten up skin and protect it

from free radicals throughout the day. Phaxay says, “We love giving advice on how to make people’s lives a bit easier beauty-wise because we are exposed to so many new brands and trends so frequently. Just deciphering that for people, so they can implement it into their own lives, is so fun.” Besides makeup services, Haven Beauty Collective also offers microblading, spray tanning, lash extensions and teeth whitening. Kent and Phaxay, with over two decades of combined professional experience, have made it their mission to empower and give confidence to clients. They articulate that “all of our guests are beautiful as they

There’s no telling what ideas can come from a backyard barbecue—especially when it comes to Prince fans. Shortly after the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s death on April 21, 2016, some of his fans gathered, and, as sadness and a yearning to keep his philanthropic legacy alive, an idea was sparked. Lifelong Prince fan and Paisley Park regular Heidi Vader kept the idea burning and, in 2017, she formed Purple Playground, a nonprofit for youth music education. From there, educator, DJ and vocalist Willie Adams had the idea for Academy of Prince (AOP), a free monthly and summer music program for teens to write, perform and collaborate musically. Excelsior’s Makennah Reisinger, 14, attended the program in 2021. “This was a space to try new things and be yourself with no one judging you,” says the Minnetonka Middle School eighth grader. “We all felt like we belonged and could just be silly and have fun.” Vader tapped into her 35 years of music connections to form a powerhouse of speakers and teachers. “It’s so

touching how many [positive responses] we get,” says Vader, Purple Playground director. “It’s about continuing Prince’s legacy of giving and educating the next generations—all taught by musicians who played with him, authors who wrote historical books about him and others who collaborated with him.” AOP students learn about Prince and his musical influences and collaborate during the two-week camp, writing and recording in a professional studio at the High School for Recording Arts in St. Paul. The program stretches students beyond their comfort zones, which unleashes their voices and creativity. “It takes a lot of work and practice to be good and make something sound good,” Makennah says. “A lot of kids my age have a lot to say but don’t know how to say it. I think we have a lot more knowledge to be shared with the world. We just have to find a way to share it, and writing songs and playing music might be a good start.” “Academy of Prince is a revolutionary approach to music and arts-based education,” Adams says. “We don’t foster competition. We show our students

BOARD WORK and model for the community the power of collaboration. We see our differences as strengths and gifts, not deficits. I believe students and the communities we serve will be impacted for generations to come because, like Prince, we are about using music to unite, heal and uplift our world.” Makennah plans to attend AOP this year, and she encourages others to give it a try, as well. “I would 100 percent recommend AOP,” she says. “I have met some of the best friends through the program and have grown as a better person and musician.” Her mother, Laurel Reisinger, echoes the endorsement. “As a mom, this program was just the thing my teen needed at the perfect time,” she says. “It was amazing to watch the friendships that evolved in only two weeks.”

Elisa Fiorillo and Adrian Crutchfield (who was a guest artist and a music supervisor liaison) joined Vader and Adams on the Purple Playground board of directors. Singer and songwriter Fiorillo was a backup vocalist with Prince and The New Power Generation from 2009–2014. She was on Prince’s world tour in 2010 and worked with him until 2014. Fiorillo joined the board after seeing firsthand how AOP impacted the kids. “The last time I worked with these amazing kids, I saw the huge transition from the time they arrived to how they left,” she says. “At first, [students were] insecure to share their ideas, and by the end, kids were going off on their own and creating songs all by themselves and performing them.” Fiorillo is motivated by her memory of Prince. “The thing that drives me is knowing in my heart and soul that Prince would be very proud of me,” she says. “He loved kids, and he loved

sharing his music with kids. He inspired me to write, and I want to do the same for the kids of Purple Playground.” Crutchfield, saxophone artist and The New Power Generation HORNZ liaison, toured with Prince and was the last horn man to perform and record with Prince. “I believe we are all responsible for passing it, whatever ‘it’ is in you, onto the next generation; no gimmicks, no smoke and mirrors or hidden agendas,” he says. “Prince was big on passing it on. He taught me, and I feel I owe it to him and all my other teachers to pass on the knowledge.” AOP empowers students to look inside themselves for what’s already there. “Everyone has creativity and expression in them; the trick is finding the confidence and audacity to share it with the world,” Crutchfield says. Purple Playground is funded through donations and grants, most recently from Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and Minnesota State Arts Board.

Story by Renée Stewart-Hester

Wedding plans can be set in motion long before a couple entertains the notion of the proverbial walk down the aisle. Dreams are imagined, ideas are pinned and look-book pages are carefully torn and saved. For the lucky ones, all or parts of their celebratory visions come true. Once her parents moved into their

Lake Minnetonka home, Caitlin Amoroso realized she wanted to get married in the backyard of the family home. And, truly, for many Minnesotans, celebrations on or near a lake are just part of our DNA. “Home is where the heart is,” Amoroso says. “I have so many happy memories at my parents’ house, and the

view of Lake Minnetonka from their backyard is one of a kind. I couldn’t think of a better place to tie the knot.” With the help of Rustic Elegance, Caitlin and Ryan Amoroso held their wedding and reception in 2021 at the bride’s family lakeside home. “Rustic Elegance assisted us in a broad spectrum of wedding details from figuring

29

out the logistics of the tents and tables to the placement of silverware on the tables,” says Wendy, Amoroso’s mother. Prior to the wedding day, the Rustic Elegance team toured the property and developed a layout for the tents and helped book rental items (tent, tables, chairs, lighting and more). As with any outdoor celebration, the landscape had to be considered. The yard proposed certain challenges, and the space and slope down to the lake wasn’t conducive to having the entire event in that area. With a little brainstorming and creative thinking, the team came up with a plan—move to the front yard for cocktail hour and dinner and use the lakeside for lounging and the dance. With so many decisions and ideas vying for a wedding day’s attention, there are bound to be a few that, well, just need to be sidelined. “One of the things I appreciated most … was, if we had a bad wedding plan idea, [owner Kellie Heinen] told us and explained why,” Wendy says. With the wedding planning team working out the details and logistics of the ceremony and reception, attention also must be directed toward landscaping and gardening details well ahead of the event. For those living in this area, buckthorn and sumac are oft unwelcome guests, and Wendy relied on Sarah Windland from Windland Fields (Maple Plain). “They have helped us transition our yard over the years from a yard with a lot of buckthorn and itchy sumac to a great yard with low maintenance but beautiful plants,” she says. Prior to the wedding, the Windland Fields team removed undesirable vegetation from the lakeside hill and planted over 250 bush honeysuckles. “Our yard looked wonderful for the wedding,” Wendy says. Come wedding day, three Rustic Elegance coordinators were on site. “Weather played a bit of a role in the day with the threat of storms … We were constantly opening and closing the [tent’s] sidewalls based on what the weather was doing,” Heinen says. After the vows were exchanged, guests enjoyed butler-passed appetizers, a charcuterie display and cocktails. Lake Minnetonka hosted a featured activity as guests were invited to take a

T R E N D A L E RT Weddings, while traditional in theory, can bend to the trends. ... “Boho weddings and neutrals are going to continue to trend into 2022,” Heinen says. “You’ll continue to see things like traditional pampas grass, colored pampas grass and spray painted dried florals. Elaborate hanging floral installations have been popular along with hanging greens. Balloons are also making a comeback, and we are seeing these used in creative and fun installations as well. We are also seeing more and more backyard weddings. Big and small, people are liking the flexibility to create their own space and tailor their wedding to reflect who they are as a couple.”

pontoon ride along the water. During dinner, Heinen and the team transformed the ceremony space, turning the lakeside ceremony tent into a lounge and dance area. “We used our décor and rental furniture to create a soft seating vignette for guests to casually mingle,” she says. “When creating this space, we thoughtfully designed the tent to have the chandeliers hanging in a position where they would work for both the ceremony and the lounge space.” The team also utilized a rustic bar, placing it in front of the ceremony arch to create a focal point. “This was my favorite part of the day, watching this space be transformed and be perfectly useful for both the ceremony and then the

lounge tent,” Heinen says. The team also incorporated its rental décor items, such as wine barrel cocktail tables, whitewashed ceremony doors, dessert stands, an antique buffet hutch for desserts and more to add to the aesthetic of the day. “My favorite part was feeling truly comfortable,” Amoroso says. “Our guests could go down to the lake, play bag games or dance. It had a very low-key, fun and casual vibe.” “Looking back on the wedding, we were able to enjoy the day and all of our guests because Rustic Elegance took care of all ‘the day of ’ coordination,” Wendy says. “Hiring a day-of wedding coordinator was one of the best wedding decisions we made.”

31

C ON SI D ER T HIS Hosting an event at home clearly has its upsides, but there are elements that should be addressed when making the decision to forgo another venue. Heinen shares her thoughts: “There are definitely things to consider before deciding to host a wedding at a more nontraditional venue, especially home weddings, where a venue is being created from scratch,” she says. Layout and logistics: Is there enough

room for guests? Don’t forget space for vendor set up, parking, bathrooms and more. Consider logistics needed for lighting and power sources. Décor and rental items: Every chair, table, table linen, dish, utensil, glass and more will need to be sourced for the event. “This is a great way to truly customize the space to fit the desired look and needs, but it is also a bit more work to source and pull together from differ-

ent vendors,” Heinen says. Vendors: Hire vendors experienced with working in this type of setting. “Good vendors with experience will make all the difference,” she says. And last, but certainly not least— the weather: “You can never predict Mother Nature,” Heinen says. “It could be too hot, too cold, too windy, too rainy, etc., but planning ahead can ensure a perfect day no matter what.”

MOT H ER K N O WS B ES T Over the course of nearly a decade, Heinen has assisted with more than 800 weddings. While some of us might blanch at the thought, she relishes the opportunity to be a part of the beginning of so many marriages—so much so that she made it her business. In 2012, Heinen launched Rustic Elegance, which specializes in backyard and barn wedding coordination. It also offers a carefully-culled rental décor collection, including furniture, tabletop elements, dessert stands, beverage vessels, chalkboards, easels and more. (The website’s vintage mix-and-match dinnerware has us swooning.) With a graphic design degree from the University of Minnesota, Heinen had sketched out a career. But a conversation with her mother, Jean Heinen-Felling, altered the trajectory of Heinen’s path. “After working in design for 10 years, I was starting to feel lifeless and uninspired, and I hated sitting at a desk in an office all day,” she says. “I knew there had to be something more for me out there. That was when my mom suggested starting my own wedding planning business … This would bring together my passions for weddings, events and design, as well as my love of the outdoors.” While Rustic Elegance bills itself as specializing in backyard, barn and tent weddings, it can also assist with weddings at traditional venues.

Chris Egert shares an important story of resilience and determination.

Story by Renée StewartHester Photos by Chris Emeott 34

AN ANCHOR OF HOPE

A morning news anchor for KSTP-TV, Chris Egert is also the co-host of the station’s Minnesota Live, its 9 a.m. lifestyle show. An Edward R. Murrow award-winning reporter, who has received multiple Emmy awards for his work covering the people of Minnesota and western Wisconsin, Egert has been with the station since 2012. He lives in Minnetonka with his wife, Kate; son, Dakota (high school junior); and daughter, Delaney (high school freshman). Egert grew up in Armour, South Dakota, a town of just over 600 folks that sits 90 miles west of Sioux Falls. And, as so many kids do in small towns, he participated in sports—lots of them—baseball, basketball, football and track. And when he wasn’t playing one of them, he was likely watching a game from the stands, as he was one day in a local gym. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” Egert says. “We were watching a high school basketball game, and I was jumping down the stairs of the arena when I landed the wrong way on [my ankle],” he says. “This would be the first of many, many severe sprains on the left foot.” Athletes, regardless of their level of play, are used to enduring some degree of injury, but this was different. With

April 2022

lakeminnetonkamag.com

no identifiable cause of the sprains, Egert’s mother and stepfather pressed forward to find a resolution or at least a remedy. “As a competitive athlete in junior high, high school and college [He played basketball at Huron University in South Dakota], there were many bumps, bruises and breaks along the way, but those ankle sprains were the hardest to recover from,” he says. It’s no wonder that recovery was hindered given the sheer number of sprains that Egert experienced. What was the final count? There were “far too many to remember,” he says. By the time he was a senior in college, “… the doctor told me my mobility and pain level was comparable to the arthritis of an 80-year-old man,” he says. After that assessment, it’s not surprising that Egert faced surgery. “[I] had my first surgery as an adult living in western South Dakota in Rapid City and had additional surgeries in almost every TV news market I worked in—Omaha, Seattle and then here in the Twin Cities,” he says. How many surgeries? He can’t say. There have been at least 13, but Egert stopped counting after that, “because I kept thinking it would be a ‘lucky 13’—it was not,” he says.

The next course of action was a total ankle replacement. “During a revision surgery to the total ankle replacement, I developed an infection, so there were several procedures after that to try and remedy the infection,” Egert says. “The ‘best’ of all remaining bad options was to amputate the left foot. Otherwise, I was facing several more surgeries, with no guarantee of success.” That was in 2017. For the most part, the surgery left Egert in a better place, but better doesn’t equate to perfect. “Medical advancements in prosthetics have been amazing, but even the best engineering doesn’t make it comfortable,” he says. “Snow and ice are very dangerous, as are stairs and uneven surfaces. And things like taking a shower and going to the restroom at night are also very challenging because you don’t sleep with your prosthetic on.” Egert deals with phantom limb pain and had scheduled surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to help alleviate the chronic discomfort. However, he cancelled it because of COVID-19. “I may consider it again someday, but [I] will just live with it for now,” he says. Leveling up people’s understanding of what those living with limb loss, like

35

Egert, must undertake on a daily basis is a goal for April’s National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month. It’s a mission that Egert understands. “I think folks can be distracted by the cool looking mechanics of prosthetic hands, feet and legs, and not really appreciate how much it takes for the people wearing them to function,” Egert says. “It is a lot of work, it is not comfortable and in no way does this mechanical limb replace the real thing. Thank God they can do what

36

they do, but I hope people realize the courage it takes to get out of bed every day for people who experience extreme mobility challenges.” Going through an intense and prolonged health challenge can test one’s physical and mental mettle. Hopefully, the process moves to reveal fresh layers of grit, empathy and understanding. “I have a much greater understanding of what people with mobility issues deal with every moment of every day,” Egert says. Add in dealing with it all while

working in the public eye. Then what? “[I] never intended to say anything about it to anyone, but my managers at KSTP thought it would be a good idea to let our viewers know what was happening with me,” he says. “Since sharing my story, I’ve been contacted by hundreds of people and consulted dozens of others [about] what the amputation journey entails. It is pretty humbling to hear from people, who said their life has been changed just because I shared my story.”

PAT IE NT SYMPOS IUM To mark this month’s National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, the Limb Preservation Foundation is hosting Physician and Patient Perspective on Limb Loss and Limb Difference on April 29 at the University of Denver. Nine speaker panels will present on a host of topic areas, including coping with and overcoming trauma, innovations, long-term concerns, mobility, osseointegration, wound healing and more. Registration information is available at limbpreservation.org. For those unable to attend, information from the event will be available online.

“IT A L L M A KES A D I F F EREN C E …” Working in television broadcasting often requires time spent away from the TV cameras in the name of shooting in-the-field pieces, participating in station promotions, attending community events and the like. It’s a lot. Add in being the parents of two teenagers, and it’s easy to see that Egert and Kate, who works at the Minnetonka Community Center, have a lot on their proverbial plates. But that doesn’t preclude them from giving back to the community in innumerable ways. Wiggle Your Toes (WYT) is one of the benefactors of Egert’s time. Its mission is clear: “To empower those who have lost a limb to move forward, take action and get back to the life they want.” Aaron Holm, founder and executive director, is a double leg amputee since 2007. He started WYT from his hospital bed. “[WYT] helps those who help themselves, and [Egert] is an exemplary model,” Holm says. “He made an incredible decision to have his lower leg removed after living [for] years in pain and discomfort. Post limb loss, he is excelling at life—time with family, career and community—exactly what we strive for.” “The really cool thing about [WYT] is that they are really a network of people, other amputees who have so much knowledge to share about the journey,” Egert says. “When I was in the hospital bed, only a day or two out from my amputation, someone from [WYT] came into my room, and we talked. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to return the favor to others who have had amputations or are facing amputations, sometimes by visiting their hospital beds, meeting them in person before their surgery, jumping

on a video call with them or by simply sending a text from time to time to check in. I’m also trying to help them with overall awareness by using my platform at KSTP-TV to help spread the word about the great work they are doing.” Holm recognizes the importance of Egert’s efforts in setting an example of “what is possible post limb loss,” he says. “Seeing is believing, and he allows the community that we support see what is possible firsthand. He also builds awareness around limb loss and the people living with a limb deficiency.” Those living with limb loss aren’t the only ones in need of support. “Family members and loved ones are impacted greatly by having someone in their lives experience limb loss. resource for them as well,” Egert says. The Egerts also volunteer with the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). “Our son is a Type 1 diabetic, so we’ve worked for years with them to help in their efforts to find a cure,” Egert says. “Some diabetics also face the possibility of amputation, so it is extremely important for me to work with the diabetic community to [help] people avoid ever having to make the decision to amputate a limb.” Being of service is important to the Egerts. “We have been blessed beyond belief with good family, friends and fortune, so it has always been extremely important for us to do what we can to help others,” Egert says. “It all makes a difference—even the teeny tiny things.”

an international life. After moving from Greece to Turkey with her family when she was young, Tosun continued her journey across the world when she and her husband moved in 2004 to Minneapolis for his job. From there, the pair moved three more times for work, first to Switzerland and then to Singapore before returning to Deephaven in 2017 to raise their family in the Lake Minnetonka area. Throughout her travels, Tosun found herself missing the taste of home. “I love eating a lot,” she says. “I was raised in a family that my mom was in the kitchen constantly. She’s still in the kitchen.” For Tosun’s family, all gatherings and celebrations were spent around the table and around food. “I wasn’t a cook or anything of that sort all my life. All I did was just make salad and pasta for myself when I was living alone,” Tosun says. Once far from her family of origin, she found herself constantly calling her mother, asking for cooking instructions. “[It was], ‘Can you teach me this recipe?’ or, ‘It’s nettle time. Can you teach me the nettle soup?’” Tosun says. But when she wasn’t craving Turkish and Greek cuisine, Tosun was also exploring the culinary stylings of each new country she was living in at the time. “Moving to Switzerland, we knew Switzerland [from] when we were back in Turkey. The cuisine is not so foreign to us, but when we moved to Singapore— even though we love Asian food and everything—it was a totally different life over there,” Tosun says. In Singapore, Tosun met a collection of international women who were training with her as docents for an art museum.

After its weekly training, the group went out to international restaurants to sample new cuisines. “It became kind of a lifestyle; I always want to try new foods and cook them at home,” Tosun says. Her cooking education not only included lessons learned while dining out at restaurants, but Tosun also gleaned new skills from her friends, who opened the doors to Brazilian dishes and Chinese fare, for example. As she was trying her hand at these international cuisines, a friend suggested she start a blog to catalog her discoveries. Although Tosun already had an Instagram account related to her pursuit of her master’s degree in art history, she noticed her feed was overrun by images of food. She decided to retool the account as a recipe blog for her children, so when they started missing their own tastes of home, the recipes could be at their fingertips. “The whole thing came up from there, and I started this No Cheat Kitchen food account, which is basically everything I’ve made from scratch, all the sauces and everything,” Tosun says. From international dishes to a quarantine-fueled preoccupation with baking sourdough bread, Tosun has detailed her food journey for her family and followers to see. Tosun says she was blessed to have grown up in a kitchen where everything was made from scratch and continues to shun microwave cooking and premade meals. Freshly-made food is just part of her culinary DNA. “Once you get used to it, it’s not that hard,” she says. Cooking from scratch requires a stocked pantry and fresh produce, and Tosun says she likes to shop at farmers markets during the summer to find her

fruits and veggies. “I sometimes go to the Minnetonka one, and sometimes, if I’m not lazy, I go to the [Lyndale Farmers Market] because it’s the biggest,” Tosun says. When she needs more specialized items, Tosun frequents international markets like Bill’s Imported Foods (a Greek market) on Lake Street in Minneapolis and United Noodles (Asian items) on 24th Street in Minneapolis, for example.

This recipe was actually created by mistake. My plan was to make spicy tuna tartare with avocados, but … I replaced [the tuna] with sautéed scallops. If you want to wow your guests, make sure to serve the tartare in avocado shells. Caffe Freddo

Frozen Açai Granola Bars

It is a healthy snack alternative and very easy to make. I actually came up with the idea when we had leftover açai mix after breakfast. Molasses and Tahini Dip

This is a Turkish breakfast classic. You basically mix 1/4 cup tahini with a tablespoon of grape molasses, and spread it over a slice of bread. For those looking for a [peanut butter and jelly] alternative, give this a try. Both ingredients can easily be found at ethnic markets or amazon.com. Olive Oil Cakes Topped with Fresh Peaches

This is our summer afternoon crowd pleaser. I usually bake this cake when we are in Turkey as there are abundance of ripe peaches. The taste of baked peaches in pillowy soft cake is divine.

Turkish Breakfast Bowl with Olives, Feta Cheese and Tomatoes

This recipe is a fusion of laid back Turkish brunch and one bowl American breakfast. It is best enjoyed with ripe, seasonal tomatoes, but any tomatoes on the vine would work. I like to pair it with a slice of sourdough bread.

Lens on Lake Minnetonka Camouflage doesn’t hide this heron’s beauty.

“I WAS WA LK ING HOM E with my daughter after paddleboarding and

just happened to notice it in among the cattails. What struck me was the coloring of the eye and the shadows cast by the cattails. Green herons have such good camouflage. My suggestion for others photographing wildlife is: Bring your camera with you as much as possible. You never know when the opportunity will arise. I bring my camera on the [Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail], Carver Park [Reserve] and on my paddleboard often. (I have a waterproof bag when on water.)” —Andrea Anderson of Excelsior
