Effective Weight Loss with a Chronic Medical Condition at Tiger Schulman’s MMA I have been training at Tiger Schulman’s Paramus since February 2011. I needed a change in my workout. What I was doing on my own at home was not working. I was constantly bored and not seeing any results. By changing my at home fitness program and adding TSMMA to my workout routine, I was able to exceed my fitness and health goals. The instructors and atmosphere at Tiger Schulman’s Paramus is so supportive and encouraging that I have set new goals for myself; ones that I thought could never be obtained. If I hadn’t started training. I would have been so frustrated with my at home fitness that I probably would have given up and accepted my life the way it was, whether I was happy or not. But I took the first step. I have met people that I never would have and they have changed my life. These students, now my close friends, have been there for good times and bad. They have been there for me through some tough times both related to my training and in my personal life. I speak to everyone about the TSMMA Paramus school. Training under Joshu Michael Murray and Joshu Brian Russo has given me self-confidence, discipline and focus that carries over into my at home fitness as well as in my professional life. This is not just about a great workout, it’s about a way to a better life. My story is very different than anyone else’s that trains. It’s possibly the most unique situation in the Tiger Schulman’s organization. I have a chronic medical condition that will always be with me and does cause some problems when I train. The instructors have made it a point to sit down with me and truly understand the situation. They have gone above and beyond and have given me “rules” so that my health does not hinder my training and accommodated me when needed so that I can still train at the level of intensity I want and not let this unfortunate circumstance get in the way. I cannot say enough about Joshu Murray and Joshu Russo. They are not only amazing instructors with their knowledge and technique but they truly care about their students. They go out of their way to help students better themselves, not only in their abilities in class but in their daily lives as well. The atmosphere is like a family and I truly believe they have everything to do with this.

Losing 50 Pounds in a Year with Mixed Martial Arts My name is Curt Mount and I am from Haddon Township, which is located right next to Cherry Hill. 10 years ago, my daughter Caitlyn wanted to do martial arts. We enrolled her into Tiger Schulmann’s MMA in Cherry Hill, and after watching her classes for a few months, I started taking classes because it looked like fun. My younger daughter, Erica, started as a 3 year old a few months after me. We all start for our own reasons self-defense, to get in shape, flexibility, or all of the above. I started because I watched my daughter do it for a few months and it looked like fun. I weighed just shy of 250lbs and thought I was in good shape. My weight loss reached over 50 lbs the first year and got in the best shape of my life. 8 months before I got my Black Belt, I found out I have Multiple sclerosis. It was tough news to hear and it added a lot of uncertainty to my future. My Dr. Said that the first thing he tells people when they are diagnosed with MS is to have a good diet and exercise regularly. I knew then that I had to keep training even harder. Adversity is another opportunity to prove what you are made of. I had two choices when I found out my diagnosis. One-I could take the advice of some of my family and friends and get some “rest”, quit Martial Arts and start “walking or biking”-or, I could follow the path I chose-to continue with my life. My diagnosis is not a choice but dealing with it and never quitting is. That is the choice I have made. Since then I have had many challenges. I got my black belt in 2006, I became a Joshu in 2009, I also got my 4th star and am currently working on my 2nd Degree. I have ups and downs make sacrifices and have faced other obstacles. The thought of not training or giving up in other areas of my life have never crossed my mind and I don’t think they ever will. I still have MS but everyone tells me that they would never know it to watch me train or work with me and if I have any say in it at all (and I do) you never will. “TSMMA has brought my family closer because we have something in common that we can talk about, do, and associate together. It has also grown our family because everyone at Tiger Schulmann’s is a family. We train hard together and I consider everyone I train with to be my friend.” I would also like to thank the instructors I have had over the years. They, (whether they realize it or not), inspire me to train hard by not treating me differently. Their assistance has helped inspire me to continue the path I’ve chosen. I plan on going as far as I can go with it. I’m in it for life!

63+ Pounds Weight Loss Through Kickboxing On March 19th I walked through Tiger Schulmann’s East Hanover’s doors not knowing what to expect, but knowing that something in my life had to change. At 30 years old I came to a point in my life where you can say I “hit rock bottom.” I weighed 226 pounds, suffered from depression, emotional eating, and self harm. I was very unhappy with a lot of areas in my life, but being overweight was the hardest issue for me to try to gain control of. It was an issue I had struggled with for many years, and lately began to spiral out of control. After seeking help from my family and therapy I was able to gain some control of the emotional areas of my life. It was then that I felt that it was time to start focusing on my physical self. That’s when I decided I should to get back to my athletic roots (my high school years) since that’s when I was the happiest, and most fit, in my life. My first trial class is a day I won’t forget for the rest of my life. It was the day that something great and empowering had awoken within me. Joshu walked me around showing me pictures on the walls of amazing fighters, gave me a small background on the school’s history, introduced me to Sensei Lopez and gave me my first ever pair of boxing gloves…I felt super special at that point! After surviving the first trial class I felt a little overwhelmed, yet full of energy and excitement! I wanted to take some time to see if it was really something I wanted to commit myself to, but deep down I already knew. Tiger Schulmann’s was where I belonged and a month later I officially started. That’s when I felt my new self come to life! “Focus and discipline” are words you will always hear coming out of Sensei’s mouth and that’s exactly what I needed to hear on a daily basis to be able to accomplish what I have in the short months that I’ve been with Tiger Schulmann. Before I started training I never thought achieving any type fitness goals were possible. During this journey I’ve learned a lot about myself. In these past 8 months I found out what I am truly capable of, how strong I really am, and to never forget that I can do anything that I put my mind to. I truly thank Tiger Schulmann for giving me the physical skills I needed to get myself back into shape, the mental skills of learning how to not give up, how to stay positive and focused on any goal that I set for myself in life, and providing a fun and healthy environment to practice these skills. Whether its short term, long term or on or off the mat, I know I can and will accomplish it; TSMMA has truly changed my life for the better.

One Year Later and 78 Pounds Lighter It was one year ago today I had made a decision that the time had come for me to start taking care of myself and my health. At 44 years old I had reached a point where I had become overweight and deconditioned in carrying out tasks that were taken for granted in previous years. Keeping up with my children’s physical events became a task. At friendly neighborhood softball games I would be winded running out an easy base hit. Climbing flights of stairs when elevators were broken was leaving me out of breath. Looking back a year to my initial sign-up I would have never imagined that TSMMA Midwood would have the positive impact on me that it has. My original reasons for joining Tiger Schulmann MMA were for weight loss and cardio stamina, but the school has provided me a sense of structure at a time that it was lacking in my personal life. The school trains students in martial arts, muscular development, cardio, and flexibility, but it also provides the necessary skills to incorporate the handling of everyday life’s challenges; Structure. Motivation. Accomplishment. Discipline. Respect. The pursuit & achievement of set goals. Serving as a ‘school’ as opposed to a ‘gym’ provides a positive environment with the mutual respect of your fellow students and the Sensei. It is instilled through our training that ‘trying is still doing’ and through Sensei Nolan’s motivation that ‘there are talkers and there are doers out there’…that ‘lazy people are NOT happy people’…and that ‘when in doubt, TRAIN. You will never regret the decision’. Over the past 365 days: - I have lost 78 pounds. - My waist has gone from 42” to 34”. - My suit size has decreased from size 52 portly to size 44 slim fit. - My physician has cut my pressure and cholesterol medication doses in half. - I am now a competitor and participant in Spartan and mud-run obstacle races. Sensei Nolan has always been available and approachable. I have utilized his knowledge and experience throughout my past year of training for advice on nutrition, stamina, and physiological issues. I look forward to his future guidance. As all students have been told, ‘the hardest thing is getting yourself into the door’. Once you are through the doors, Sensei and his student body will provide all the motivation you need.

From “90 Day Challenge” to “Challenge of Champions” As far back as I can remember I was always shy, and I always had my older sister to stick up for me whenever anyone tried to push me around. I remember being in middle school on the bus ride home when two boys were making fun of me; I just sat there and let them, then my sister stood up from anther seat and punched one of them. My shy personality became even more insecure when I was in high school. Not only had my sister graduated, so I had no “body guard” but I was also gaining a lot of weight, which hit my confidence even harder. I stayed quiet in school, never really talking to anyone but my small group of friends. I “I graduated in 2007 at 189 pounds. Throughout the next couple of years I tried to lose the weight: running, gym memberships, weight loss programs, counting points, counting calories, I even had “buddies” to keep me motivated, but nothing seemed to work. I remember watching a Tiger Schulmann’s commercial and thinking to myself “maybe I should try that.” The next thing I knew I had picked up the phone and dialed the number. I didn’t expect myself to actually sign up, I just planned to call, get some information, hang up, let the note sit, and consider that progress. Instead I found myself excited about doing something different, and scheduled to take a class just a few days later. I remember almost everything from that first class, but mainly how much fun I had, how much of a great workout it was, and how I became instantly hooked. “I have trained consistently since that very first class and have lost over 50 pounds! I was shocked at what I lost, but also surprised at what I gained: I never had this much confidence before.” I lost weight immediately. That March I started my first “90 Day Challenge,” and weighed in at 165lbs. I was excited at my progress so far and eager to continue. Finally, something worked for me. I have trained consistently since that very first class and have lost over 50 pounds! I was shocked at what I lost, but also surprised at what I gained: I never had this much confidence before. I’m proud and happy with the person I have become, I hold my head up high, and I’m not afraid to stand up for myself when I need it. I have set and achieved so many goals that I never even thought I would be capable of. I am much more outgoing and I love meeting new people (and I love going to the beach!). I joined for one reason, which was to lose weight, and never did I expect the results to transform me completely. Along with my weight loss and confidence, I have also found a new hobby which I love, competed in several Challenge of Champions, and NAGA tournaments and am currently working towards my goal of becoming a black belt. Another thing I learned from these past five years is to not be afraid or intimidated to make certain decisions, because any single one of them can change things for the better.

Feeling 20 Years Younger After 5 Years at TSMMA Mike Berwind first came to Tiger Schulmann’s for Kickboxing classes five years ago. At the time the Trevose, PA man was already less than a hundred and fifty pounds and losing weight was the farthest thing he needed for his physical conditioning to improve. Just because he was skinny already didn’t mean he was in great shape. Fast forward five years and Berwind is almost exactly the same weight. What’s different is his relative age. A new study at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim came up with a remarkably low tech way to test your Fitness Age. By measuring your waist line, height, age, gender, resting heart rate and typical exercise regimen for the week, researchers can tell you how your body is acting physical relative to a typical person of any age between 20 and 90. The formula wasn’t made up out of thin air. Researchers evaluated 5,000 Norwegians from 20 to 90 taking a dozen measurements. They were able to narrow those measurements down to a remarkably small number that give a very good indication of someones relative fitness level. Berwind came across the article and plugged his numbers into the formula calculator (link here) to see a huge surprise. The 49 year old Trevose resident has the fitness age of a person 20 years his junior. Ever caught yourself wishing you were twenty years young? Berwind spent five years of hard work earning that distinction. So how did Berwind shave twenty years off his relative age? Kickboxing impacted his resting heart rate immensely. The Interval Training method used in class is the quickest and best way to strengthen the cardiovascular system, allowing the heart to achieve the same results with less work, thus lowering the number of beats per minute. Also researchers found in their 5,000 person study, those who exercise vigorously at least 3 times a week are able to maximize their peak oxygen intake. This is the measure of how well the body delivers oxygen to cells. Because Berwind enjoys the upbeat, safe Kickboxing classes at Tiger Schulmann’s it is not hard at all to motivate himself to get there three or more days a week. Thus helping him live a more energetic and productive life. Want to shave years off your life? Call Tiger Schulmann’s today or register at the top right and take Free Beginner Kickboxing class. See how you can live a longer, healthier life!

Relieving Stress & Anger through TSMMA I have been taking kickboxing classes at this place for some months now. All of my anger and stress goes away when I am there, and everything and everyone makes me blissful. It is a completely different environment than anywhere else I have ever been. Everyone there is like family and they are all so nice to me. For once, I feel like I belong somewhere. When I first started there, I was overweight, insecure, always down and never motivated to do anything. Ever since I joined, I feel like a new person. Although I have been there for less than a year, I think about how different my life is and will be, i have completely re-drawn my path, thanks to Tiger Schulmann’s. When I am at Tiger Schulmann’s of Rockville Centre I never want to leave. I train four days a week for three hours [minimum]. I consider Joshu, Sempai Vinny & Sempai CJ to be like older brothers. They have helped me through rough patches, never let me quit and get to where I am today. I have gained more self-confidence and no longer am as insecure as I once was. During my time there, I have managed to lose weight and I definitely see results. This makes me feel content and is one of the many reasons why I love to be there. Along with the instructors, the people who are training with me have become my inspiration. They all have their goals and aim high. They have made me more goal oriented. We are all like a big family. Although I have been there for less than a year, I think about how different my life is and will be, i have completely re-drawn my path, thanks to Tiger Schulmann’s. Since the time I took my very first class, everyone has done nothing but lend me a helping hand. As a result, I have become a team player and I have realized how group work is vital for success. “Being in these classes is the reason I have been able to succeed in everything I have done. It has given me the mentality to forget what the words “give up” mean.” Joining Tiger Schulmann’s has made me a completely new individual. I was very quiet, never wanted to say anything to anyone, or do anything with anyone because I didn’t feel confident about myself. After joining kickboxing, everything has changed. Inside and out, I have improved and continue to grow. Being in these classes is the reason I have been able to succeed in everything I have done. It has given me the mentality to forget what the words “give up” mean. Now all I think about is moving forward. No matter what the outcome is, whether I fail or accomplish my goal, I can learn to excel for the next time. If I had not joined, I would probably still be as stressed as before, with no way of letting out my anxieties and just keeping my emotions bottled in.

40 Ibs Lighter After 8 Months of Training I joined Tiger Schulmann’s Paramus in September 2012, looking for a more structured workout program than just going to the gym. 8 months later, 40 pounds lighter, I won first place in the 90-Day Challenge competition in two categories (most weight loss and most dramatic change) and couldn’t be happier. Since then I was able to maintain my weight by training regularly, taking 6 classes per week, and keeping ‘In Motion Meals’ an essential part of my daily meals plan. “Looking back at my life “before TSMMA”, my escape route would be the couch watching TV with comfort food.” Over the last few months I’ve been faced with challenging situations in my personal life, resulting in a lot of stress and the need to make some difficult decisions. Looking back at my life “before TSMMA”, my escape route would be the couch watching TV with comfort food. The level of discipline I’ve been adapted to over the last 15 months has changed all that. Going to class on a freezing Saturday morning, or at 8:30 at night after a long and stressful day was not a question or a debate anymore, it became a given, just like getting up and going to work every morning. Thinking about the times I worked out at the gym and the countless times I just gave up going only because I wasn’t motivated enough and lacked the discipline, with my Tiger Schulmann’s routine this is the complete opposite. Classes are now part of my day to day routine, part of my well being and my gateway to forgetting about everything while I am on the mat. In short, TSMMA has become my anchor of sanity! “…as a parent, this is a priceless investment in my kids’ future, not only teaching them discipline and values, but also equipping them with the tools to face tough situations in real life” Trusting my instructor, Joshu Michael Murray, I now have my 3 boys taking classes at the Paramus school. For me as a parent, this is a priceless investment in my kids future, not only teaching them discipline and values, but also equipping them with the tools to face tough situations in real life and being able to have the right skill set to overcome any obstacle, from a potential bullying situation to a challenge in school or anything else where their mixed martial arts skills and discipline will become handy. 2 of my kids have recently took part in the Tiger Schulmann’s Challenge of Champions competition, and I couldn’t be more proud in this first milestone in their young life. I can honestly say that Tiger Schulmann’s Paramus has become a second home for us, a loving extended family. The kids love going there and show their pride by mentioning TSMMA and their training at any opportunity when being asked about their long term goals.

Beating Recovery With Kickboxing DiScala was wary of trying a kickboxing class. She was in a car accident in High School and suffered severe back, neck and wrist injuries. She had been warned that any strenuous activity might be an issue, but Tiger Schulmann’s Kickboxing proved to have the exact opposite effect. “Not only was I able to train with all my ailments, but by training and focusing on my core, it actually strengthened the muscles around my neck and back which alleviated a lot of the pain I was in on a daily basis.” DiScala noticed a few things happen during her first year of training. First was the definition she saw in places she never knew she had muscles. She dropped all her other exercise routines, enjoying not having to worry about what she was going to do next, class took care of that for her. She did keep playing tennis for fun, but soon she noticed significant improvement there as well. “My stamina had increased, my serve got stronger, so did my ground strokes. I was able to chase down balls I would’ve never gone for before. The tennis Pro nicknamed me Grasshopper because I was all over the court and nothing got by me.” The last thing DiScala noticed was at home in Laurel Hollow. The family was training in MMA together and she relished the closeness of the experience she was sharing with her two sons. Nicholas soon joined Christopher on the mat in Cubs class while DiScala added Grappling to her Kickboxing regimen. All three would celebrate their progress whether it be a new stripe or belt. Mom took to leaving her belt on the kitchen table whenever she got a new stripe or promotion so the two young boys would see it first thing in the morning. “To see that they were as excited as I was to achieve it made me so proud and happy. It motivated me to want to train hard and make them proud, as they did for me.” DiScala made a big decision when she achieved her yellow belt, joining the Challenge of Champions. Given her history of neck and back issues it was a tough choice, but one she doesn’t regret. She would win her first match despite getting caught in a head lock that hurt her neck and despite the pain of the old injury she continued in the tournament. She would win her next three matches and take home first place. ”None of this could have been done without the discipline and determination Sensei Gravina instilled in me. My gratitude is beyond words for what he has done for me and my family. I look forward to continuing this journey at TSMMA Syosset with him and continue to learn and do for others what he has done for me!”
-Marilena DiScala, TSMMA Syosset
Quit Smoking & Weight Loss With Kickboxing My lifestyle changed due to Tiger Schulmann’s disciplined Kickboxing workouts. My name is David and only 6 months ago I was 50 lbs overweight and looking at my 20th year anniversary as a smoker. Every now and then I would be reminded how out of shape I was. Thanks to a friend that works at the Tiger Schulmann’s Center on Steinway street in Astoria, I was fast on my way to a new life. Six months later I am proud and ecstatic to say that I am no longer a smoker and dropped my weight from 225 lbs to a trim 175. It was not easy at first, classes were tough and I could not even walk after the first few. With the positive motivation of my instructor I was able to realize that my health was in my own hands and I made the decision to stop a bad habit that had been with me for a long time. After a few weeks of not smoking I noticed my performance improve and I wasn’t so exhausted after each workout. I was able to push myself even harder and got more and more out of each class. Every time I would go to class my instructor would let me know how well I was doing. His positive motivation again would inspire me to keep trying harder. While trying to master some of the most effective self defense and kickboxing techniques I have seen it was hard to realize how many calories I was burning with each class. My mind would be on Auto Pilot while Sensei would be instructing how things were done. By the end of each class I would feel like I really did something. Later I found out I was burning 800 calories an hour. It was not easy at first, classes were tough and I could not even walk after the first few. With the positive motivation of my instructor I was able to realize that my health was in my own hands and I made the decision to stop a bad habit that had been with me for a long time. Last week was my six month anniversary at Tiger Schulmann’s and I was proud to let Sensei know that I had lost 50 lbs in that time. I have been having fun the whole time, enjoying the atmosphere of a family based center and training with and being pushed by my partners there. All the while learning techniques that help protect myself. There is no way you can get this type of experience in a gym and I would recommend it for everyone. Thank you Sensei and staff.
