Create a side parting following the haircut and natural fall of the hair.
Progressing into the fringe, take horizontal slices and apply Formula 1 from the new growth through to the mid- lengths and ends, until the section is complete.
katie —
Begin by taking a radial parting from ear to ear, followed by a profile parting from the crown to the nape. This creates two sections. Continue by taking an irregular square section from the crown, sitting 4 inches back from the hairline. Secure all sections with TIGI pro sectioning clips.
From the radial, progress into the crescent section. Take horizontal slices and apply Formula 1 from the new growth through to the midlengths and ends. Continue until the section is complete. Isolate with TIGI copyright©olour meche strips and repeat on the opposite side.
Continuing into the final irregular square section, take horizontal slices and apply Formula 2 from the new growth through to the mid-lengths and ends. Once the section is complete isolate with TIGI copyright©olour meche strips.
Take a square section through the fringe area. From the radial, create a crescent shape, starting two inches above the ear, to the high recession. Above the crescent shape, the remaining hair creates an irregular rectangle section. Secure all sections with TIGI pro sectioning clips and repeat on the opposite side.
Working into the irregular rectangle section, apply Formula 2 from the new growth through to the mid-lengths and ends until the section is complete. Repeat the same on the opposite side.
Once the application is complete, process for 35 minutes; then emulsify, rinse and remove, using Bed Head by TIGI Urban Antidotes Recovery shampoo and conditioner.

summer trends
From the Catwalk to the Sidewalk, translating backstage trends into wearable styles for everyone.
CASATAWAY ------------------------------------------------------------------------Hair: Prepare to be transported to sunnier climes with this trend that exudes laidback elegance and exotic travel. Inspired by the idea of summertime romance, whimsical escapism and being by the ocean, bring the holiday to you with lightly tousled hair and a chic oversized pair of sunglasses. Bon voyage! As seen at: Frankie Morello, Jean Paul Lespagnard Hair Colour: This is a dream like trend influenced by the ocean and the resulting colour inspiration will have two looks: natural and playful. Natural, sun-kissed looks are created with multi-tons of sand, oyster blonde and buttermilk using colour layering techniques for both short and longer hair. Colour Palette: The playful colour palette takes inspiration from a theme of ‘escapism’. To create this ‘holiday feeling’ use intense pastels to give ‘sea-punk’ look.

Hair: All hail the hippie as nomadic fashion makes a big comeback to the catwalks. For hair, think waist length Technicolor braids or detailed Mohawk corn rows playfully twisted around the head in true tribal fashion, as modern takes on a classic. Drawing on craftsmanship and the use of accessories to play with, this more bohemian of trends is bespoke and demands a finely tuned hand. As seen at: Alon Livne and Mara Hoffman Hair Colour: The Artisan trend expresses fashion with a’ soul’. In colour terms, the inspiration of this ‘nature and ethnic trend meeting modern design’ allows the colourist to translate the trend into strong, bold colours. Colour Palette: The resulting palette ranges from strong blacks with accents of poppy to orange, fuchsia, plum violets and deep denim. To work the trend techniques include colour blocking and all-over colours.

CHANGE Her MIND Let’s face it. No one actually needs that bright green
eyeshadow or pop of bright pink lip crème. Like any other retail scenario, some shades are always a tougher sell than others. With some confidence and a few tried and true methods, you’ll be selling through your ‘dust collectors’ in no time. - You and your staff are your own best advertisement. Use whatever cosmetics your needing to move as a life demonstration of how fabulous a person can look when they choose those shades or products. - Get creative and have everyone in the building wear the same color lipstick or bright eyeliner in a different way. - Take the time!!! Get to know the products and when a client positively comments on your makeup, always offer to do the same look or a quick variation for her. - Gain inspiration. Have the receptionist flip through current magazines and frame images of celebrities and models wearing similar shades. Have a sign that says, get our “Look of the Week”. - Brush Up. If you’re not sure how to use a product, just ask! It’s likely there is someone there who can help. Make sure your salon has a TIGI® Cosmetics Collection that the stylists can borrow to learn new techniques.
You and your staff are your own best advertisement. Use whatever cosmetics your needing to move as a life demonstration of how fabulous a person can look in that shade. 15

Spotted BackStage at: Holly Fulton, Meadham Kirchhoff, Thomas Tait, Blumarine, Just Cavalli, Chloé, Simone Rocha Before it all Began: “From my start in hairdressing, when I was a salon assistant in San Francisco, I knew I wanted to work on the shows. I would watch and rewatch old VHS tapes of backstage.” Big Break: “My first season was assisting Laurent Philippon, Jimmy Paul, Rolando Beauchamp and Dennis Lanni in 2004 in New York. I realized fast that I had a lot to learn. From there, I became Jimmy’s first assistant for a few years and then Laurent’s first. We did shows in New York, Milan and Paris.”
Zen technique: “[I’ve learned] not to freak my team out. I have seen lead stylists screaming at a hairdresser, and the more you panic, the more you lose concentration. Obviously there are going to be hair-raising moments, but losing it because a ponytail isn’t tight enough really doesn’t get anyone anywhere. Take it out and do it again.” faShion city guide: “London is manic, and probably for me the most fun. That British ‘fuck it’ attitude extends to fashion week. A lot of the designers, although very young, refuse to follow trends, and I love that. In Milan, glamour still seems to rule.”
in anthony’s kit:
L’OréaL PrOfessiOnneL infinium ($22): “it’s a great all-around hairspray, and something i really could not live without.” L’OréaL PrOfessiOnneL tecni.art fresh dust ($22): “it’s like a dry shampoo but without the white residue. i love working this into grungy styles for more texture.” L’OréaL PrOfessiOnneL tecni.art pli ($19, all at salons): “it’s a great base product that helps blowouts and updos really stay in place.”
creative influenceS: “I’ve been very influenced by Urs Fischer and Maurizio Cattelan—they have a humorous approach and think outside the box. Richard Serra’s paintstick works have also always spawned consideration and thought.” Zen technique: “The most important lesson is to lose your ego and be a team player. When you are on a team for a month, there is no room for an ego.” faShion city guide: “Milan is the aunt with big, gorgeous hair who comes to visit. Italians are so passionate about life that there’s always shouting, pushing, crying, laughing and drama backstage. Paris is the chic mother, the grand finale of it all.”
in james’s kit:
L’OréaL Paris elnett satin hairspray ($15, at drugstores): “i use it for everything. nothing can top it.” L’OréaL PrOfessiOnneL tecni.art full volume extra force 5 mousse ($23, at salons): “this is great for a wet look. you can dampen it with water to rework the shape.” aLterna style cleanse extend translucent dry shampoo ($22, delineation.ca): “don’t just use it on dirty hair. try it in clean hair and brush through.” tiGi Bed Head superstar Queen for a day ($20, bedhead.com): “spray on dry hair and blow-dry in. repeat this process as many times as you wish to build ultimate texture.”

Spotted BackStage at: J. W. Anderson, Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, Topshop, Anthony Vaccarello, Kenzo Big Break: “It was always my dream to assist Guido Palau. I was in a bar in London and Guido was there, so after some drinks to help pluck up my courage, I introduced myself and told him I was a fan. I had extensive knowledge of his work and mentioned all of the editorials and campaigns I really loved. Weeks later, he called me and asked if I would like to join his team at New York Fashion Week. A few years after that, I became his first assistant, and was for five years.” creative influenceS: “I’m not a fan of overly technical hair. I really enjoy the little mistakes you get from making a hairstyle seem organic. Like a girl [I saw] who used too much product on her ponytail but forgot to include a piece of hair at the back, so she shoved a big ugly clip in it. I love that.”

INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH 2014 BOOT CAMP
One Team. Nine Lives. 6 Days In London. Forever Changed. The US Inspirational Youth finalists flew to London on April 26th to participate in an intensive 6 day boot camp with the TIGI速 International Creative Team. While there, they covered upcoming trends in fashion, hair cutting and colour theory, session styling, how to cast models and more. Their time was capped off with a full scale editorial style photo shoot on the streets of London, which allowed them to apply what they had learned on live models in real time. Check out BehindTheChair.com to follow the rest of their life changing journey via webisodes and exciting updates!

TIGI INSPIRATIONAL YOUTH 2014 @ premiereorlando ®
The Inspirational Youth team landed in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday, May 29, to begin the culmination of their journey together. They hit the ground running with a refresher seminar lead by Thomas Osborn and Richy Kandasamy, then held their model casting that evening to find the perfect canvas for the looks they would be creating for their main stage presentation at Premiere Orlando on Monday. The next day, they met with Mike Esa to brush up on their presentation skills, and then began their prep work on the models they had chosen. Saturday they were submerged into an intense rehearsal schedule, and Sunday they shadowed the International Creative Team as they prepped for their main stage presentation that morning. The team woke up for a 7am call time on Monday, prepped their models and made their main stage debut at 10:30am with Mary Rector-Gable from Behindthechair.com as their MC. They performed like pros, and were able to announce an exciting twist to their journey. Instead of just one 2014 Inspirational Youth winner, there will now be two! But the excitement didn’t end there. The winners were not announced on stage, because Mary informed the audience that Behindthechair.com has picked up the US Inspirational Youth journey and will be debuting a Project Runway style web series! The series will begin airing in August and the winners will be announced during the web series finale, seen by thousands of hairdressers across the globe! After their presentation ended, they celebrated with a champagne toast as a nod to their future. This is an amazing opportunity for these young stars, and we can’t wait to see how far this ride takes them.
For these 9 talented hairdressers, Orlando was not the end of their journey… it was only the beginning.
