Canadian SALON SPOTLIGHT Mint Hair Lounge Port Moody, British Columbia Mint Hair Lounge is an upscale urban salon with a well-educated and ambitious team who portrays creativity, individuality and beauty. Salon owner, Lisa Smith, opened this community driven salon four years ago and has received numerous honors, which include, taking home several awards at Hairapalooza and being honored by Port Moody for their Cuts for Cots annual fundraiser. Mint has carried Hair Reborn™ for six months and this brand is now essential for the salon. “It has filled a huge segment in our business that was missing since our original treatment line was discontinued. We have been in need of a new line that treats our customers with breakage and dryness for quite some time now,” says Smith. Mint’s stylists are exceedingly passionate about their clients and strive to better themselves as professionals in the hair industry every day. Recently, Mint had the opportunity to participate in the remarkable in-salon education with TIGI® Talent member, John Radu. This experience helped to strengthen the team and boost their self-confidence. It can be quite challenging to come across influential educators that make you feel relaxed, but John is a natural and definitely made a positive and unforgettable impact on the stylists while teaching stunning cuts and easy to use techniques.

Getting to know Team Canada MARY HAMILTON CLARK Director of Sales for TIGI® Canada Mary Hamilton Clark was born and raised on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. She currently resides in Northern California in Sonoma County. Mary knew she wanted to be in the Beauty Industry at an early age as she often gave her aunts and sisters (painful) makeovers, and later loved to cut her boyfriend’s hair. After graduating from Arizona State University, Mary discovered that she was very successful at and also enjoyed sales. She paired her love for sales and beauty and started her career working for the Estée Lauder Company selling cosmetics. Mary is currently the Director of Sales for TIGI® Canada and with over 15 years of experience working in the professional haircare industry, she says that working for TIGI® is her dream job. When asked what drew her to TIGI® in the first place? She says, “I started working for TIGI® when the products were in the black and white bottles and we had only 5 Bed Head® products. I knew that this was going to be a company that would lead the industry in so many ways. We were already the leaders in education and the success of the products soon followed. I wanted to be a part of the best!” What’s your favorite TIGI® product? Hair Reborn™ Time Extend™ Moisture Lotion What’s your favorite part of your job? Working with amazing and inspiring people that feel like family, and meeting more of the same when I am traveling in Canada visiting TIGI® salons and Distributors. Greatest accomplishment in your career in the Beauty Industry so far? Being able to come back to a job I love at TIGI® after staying home with my kids for 8 years. Timing is everything. What are your hobbies outside of work? Yoga, music, fine dining (I am a foodie and I love good wine) and just hanging out with my kids. Any words of advice for young hairdressers just getting their start? Never stop learning. Education is the single most important part of what will make you successful as a hairstylist. Education will help you to be the best in your field, stay current and will help you to build and retain a strong clientele. Also, teach your clients how to style their hair so they look good every day, not just the day they walk out of your salon. Your clients can be your least expensive and best form of advertisement!

The booth also showcased our inspirational partnership with Children With Hair Loss. TIGI® has worked closely with them over the years, and with the success of the partnership now have the incredible opportunity to reach out and help the kids at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Each and every child receives a free wig yearly without any cost to the family. TIGI® would love to spread the word to every salon to help and participate in donating to Children With Hair Loss.

Main Stage

Nick Irwin and the International Creative Team recently wrapped up a top notch performance during the ABS Chicago trade show on Main Stage. Attendees were treated to education, inspiration and a look into the minds of the industry’s top hairdressing talent. During the performance the team showcased top looks from the Academy and Masterbrand Collections with precise cuts and vibrant, trendsetting colour. As a grand finale for the show, the team displayed their Avant Garde creativity and hard work from 2014 Mercedes Benz Fashion Weeks. The looks were from the shows seen at Ruffian, Mara Hoffman, The Blonds and Mark Fast. 4

Using Small Talk™ as a cutting agent, apply to the hair before taking two curved diagonal back sections from the high point of recession to below the crown.

Now remove weight from the top. Pivot around the crown and point-cut square to the head-shape at a high elevation.

Commencing the cut at the sides, work with diagonal back sections. Comb and elevate the hair to 90º and blunt-cut at one finger’s depth to remove weight.

From the ear forwards continue the layering process, working with horizontal sections.

Continue the same process towards the center back. Note the hand and body position and repeat the same technique on the other side.

The last sections on both sides of the head are overdirected back to maintain length through the fringe.

After blow drying the underneath area, detail with thinning shears using a scissor-over comb technique.

Using the hands, blow dry the hair off the face.

At the top, comb the remaining hair downwards to the natural fall. Using a razor, reshape the interior length horizontally behind the ear at low elevation.

Using deep parallel pointcutting and channel cutting, detail and remove weight from the interior length.

Continue this process towards the side. To maintain length and fringe, work from shorter to longer in front of the ear.

Add further details to the top using parallel point-cutting and apply with Sugar Dust™ and Up Front to finish.

Nick Irwin worked closely with some of the industry’s most creative and innovative designers, such as Mara Hoffman, The Blonds and Ruffian, to create sleek, chic and unique hairstyles to enhance each collection. From the feminine and delicate designs by Alon Livne to the bold and flamboyant silhouettes of Ruffian’s Glam Rock movement, fashionistas from around the world can look to Nick and the US Session Team’s work during the Autumn/Winter 2014 season for hair inspiration. ®

GET THE Look Mara Hoffman Fall/Winter 2014

Hair by Catwalk® by TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick Irwin Inspiration: Mara Hoffman’s Fall 2014 collection is inspired by the art, landscapes, textiles and jewelry of Northern Africa. Rugs of Morocco, camels in the Egyptian desert and Bedouin jewelry are references for this season’s aesthetic. Once again, Hoffman and Catwalk® by TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick Irwin paired up to develop an intricately effortless hair look that speaks perfectly to Hoffman’s confident, sultry, glamorous girl. Overall Look: A brave, ‘back to the desert’ braid

How-To: • Starting with clean, dry, straight hair, create a deep and clean side part on the left side. • Next, secure wefts of hair at back of head and sides to achieve desired thickness and length. • Work Catwalk® by TIGI® Strong Hold Mousse from roots to ends, using a round brush to blow dry smooth. • Begin to French braid the hair beginning at the nape, working your way into a three-plait braid through the ends. Secure with a small elastic and use a diffuser on low heat to set the wave. • Once set, gently remove the braid and work Catwalk® by TIGI® Session Series™ True Wax through the ends of the three individual sections of hair. • Using a three-plait technique, braid only the last couple of inches of hair and spray generously with Catwalk® by TIGI® Session Series Finishing Hairspray. • To finish, spray the small braid with a gold-colored hairspray.

2014 TIGI® Americas held its Annual One Love Sales meeting February 27th - March 1st at the Sheraton Hotel in Downtown Dallas. The fun-filled, energetic meeting brought Americas’ Sales Specialists, District Directors and Sales VP’s together with the Global Brand Development and TIGI® Creative Team to discuss 2013 outcomes and share focused initiatives and brand innovations coming in 2014. There was a special fashion presentation by Global Creative Director Nick Irwin for styling and Global Technical Director Christel Lundqvist for haircolour. Anthony Mascolo brought the house down speaking about his continued commitment to the craft and artistry of hairdressing and his continued creative role in TIGI® product development, styling and imagery.

Fashion Week AW 2014 kicked off early with “The-Private-Client” event hosted by TIGI® SoHo Academy in participation with Cesar Galindo. Jewelry from “Juelr”, clothes by Marta Scarampi, bathing suits, leather goods, mimosas and more. After meeting the designers and admiring their creations, guests were invited to have a 360° Image Consultation. Bisous NYC correspondent, Barbara Schinazi, was “more than happy to sacrifice herself to the styling makeover gods” and said “We spoke about a myriad of things from wardrobe essentials, to lifestyle maintenance and about women reaching a confidence through style, makeup and hairstyles.”

TIGI® Classic Cutting en Español Two groups of twenty hairdressers from the LATAM territory will visit the NY TIGI® Academy in August and September to attend a TIGI® Classic Cutting Seminar. ACADEMY AND LEARNING LAB COURSE DESCRIPTIONS TRANSITION CUTTING AND COLOUR

MEN’S Focus

This 2 day course is designed to give students insight into the latest cutting techniques and current trends for today’s modern man. With a focus on salon viable techniques, students will learn the essentials of men’s hair cutting. Emphasis is placed on scissor over comb, clipper cutting, texturizing, thinning scissor, razor cutting and the styling and finishing techniques utilized in men’s grooming. Students will experience demonstrations on live models of varying lengths and textures followed by hands-on workshops on male mannequin heads.

The objective of this transitional course is to enable students to experience both cut and colour through live demonstration. The overall emphasis is to look at innovative ways to create timeless, salon-viable work. Focus is placed on perfecting cutting techniques through personalizing and texturizing with complimentary colouring techniques and colour placement. The aim of the course is to help students enhance skills, taking their work to a higher level. During the afternoon workshop students work on mannequin heads and have the option of focusing on cut or colour.

TIGI® CLASSIC CUTTING

Classic Cutting is perhaps the most important of all courses as it provides the foundation of all haircutting techniques. Without a strong understanding of classic techniques, no hairdresser can progress to an advanced, artistic level. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on TIGI® methodology and terminology, focusing on the achievement of perfect balance and technique. The technical breakdown covers one length, graduation and layering, and is followed by hands-on workshops on TIGI® block heads.

TIGI® CLASSIC COLOUR

This 4 day course is ideal for a hairdresser who wants to gain a full understanding of a Classic Colour approach, encompassing the philosophy and techniques through to theory and practical workshop sessions.

GRADUATION SKILLS

The purpose of this Graduation Skills course is to master one of the most difficult and technical concepts in haircutting: Graduation. Students start the course learning the methodology, terminology & the basic techniques used to simplify and understand Graduation. Video presentations are used to clarify and reinforce the information presented and expert technical breakdown of the concept of Graduation is followed by hands-on workshops on TIGI® mannequin heads.

CREATIVE CONSULTATION

This Creative Consultation course has a totally original and individual approach to growing your colour business through creative thinking and fashion knowledge. As a result, you can work creatively while also providing opportunities to up-sell colour and build client loyalty. TIGI®’s unique concept of creatively blending hair analysis and identifying fashion tribes, provides descriptive language and explains in-depth complexion analysis to upgrade customer service and give clients a highly personal salon experience. Gain knowledge in how to best communicate with their clientele in a creative way that will lead to up-sell of colour, client loyalty and a chance to work creatively every day.

CREATIVE CUTTING AND COLOUR

The TIGI® International Creative Team constantly evolve their work merging new ideas, research and techniques. This highly advanced cutting course provides innovative information that is both directional and functional based on the latest collections created by the team. Inspiration is key to being a successful colourist. This colour course explores the world of colour, taking inspiration from art, fashion and new-media creating new and exciting colour techniques through the application of fundamental principles of hair colour and a classic technical approach to develop skills that give exciting contemporary, creative results your clients will love. Excellent for colourists with knowledge of fundamental colour, and hairdressers who want to gain confidence with creative colouring techniques and colour mixtures taking inspiration from art, fashion and media.
