leave this lovely Riad, our stay here has been relaxing and the staff, have been very attentive. We would like to thank Wafaa the hotel manager for all her help and assistance and her amazing sense of humor. This Riad not only offers extremely comfortable rooms it also delivers great food. I would highly recommend this property, as the position of the Riad is just 5 minutes walk from the main square. This Riad was no exception, decorated beautifully and full of Moroccan charm. The Riad has only six rooms and they have all been decorated to a high standard, nothing has been over looked, a telephone for you incase you get lost while out in the Medina, music played at all times, robes, slippers, hairdryer, toiletries, iPod, earphones all you could want is here for you. Up on the roof the views are amazing you can see forever, places you really would not know are there.

On a clear day you can see the Atlas Mountains, a must day trip for those adventurous types. Myself this time I opted for a Hammam washed within an inch of my life and then

Bill & Coo Suites and Lounge is set in a perfect location just a 20-minute walk away from Chora, the main town in Mykonos. A gathering of white-cube buildings, crowded round the hilly coast and facing out to the turquoise waters of Alefkandra Harbour. The town is easy going and steeped in antiquity, the season has just began but come the summer it’s luxe bars attract moneyed club kids and superstar djs, this town is suitable for all ages I must add.

Mykonos is a great place to shop also as among its cobbled alleyways you’ll find great designer clothing and jewellery shops tucked in between shops selling traditional handicrafts. I found a beautiful shoe shop ‘Tia Handmade’ where Tia the 8 | June 2016

I have one top tip high heels and cobbles were never destined to get on well, so make sure you have some flat party shoes if you are venturing into town. Mykonos can be as layed back or dressy as you wish to be, but remember to take those sunnies as far as sunglasses are concerned, there’s no such thing as ‘too big’ in Mykonos. One of the most popular cosmopolitan resorts in the world, Mykonos excites visitors with its frequently photographed Chora, the whitewashed cube-shaped houses, dozens of magnificent beaches and the high quality of its tourism infrastructure. An island full of charming contradictions, it combines quaintness and tradition with eccentricity and a wild night life. Tour the main town of Chora, lose yourself in the maze of back streets and you will understand why famous architects like Le Corbusier and Aris Konstantinidis sang praises of the “kingdom of simplicity and minimalism” of this island canvas. Have your picture taken with the famous windmills in the background. Up until the early 20th century, the Aegean winds turned their sails as they milled the grains cultivated on the island that were then used to make the Mykonos rusks. A unique complex of five churches and an aweinspiring remnant of the medieval architecture of the 16th century Cyclades, the church of Panagia 10 | June 2016

Paraportiani gleams in the sun to compose one of the most characteristic images of Mykonos. Stop in at the Aegean Maritime Museum, an elegant residence in Tria Pigadia where visitors are welcomed by an old canon. The museum collection includes replicas of oarsmen, and wind- and steampowered ships from the prehistoric to the modern age. Right next to the Maritime Museum is “Lena’s House,” a typical example of a late 19th century Mykonos home, complete with furniture, cooking utensils, embroidery and decorative items. Don’t miss a visit to the Mykonos Archaeological

Museum, where you will see pottery from the island of Rineia, and be impressed by the large vase, or pithos, decorated in relief with scenes from the Fall of Troy and the Trojan Horse. A sample of the traditional Aegean, with farmhouses and rustic construction, Ano Mera is an alternative for visitors to this cosmopolitan island. Cosmopolitan and bohemian, Mykonos is a destination that will fascinate the most demanding traveller. You can visit it all year round, but it is during summer that the island really comes alive to the intense rhythm of its glamorous lifestyle.

Self TANS PREP SKIN Take a hot shower to open up pores and use a body scrub to slough off dead skin cells. Be sure to shave as well to create a smooth surface. You can lightly moisturise the driest parts of your face, elbows, knees, etc., but don’t slather on thick lotion - that creates a barrier between your skin and the spray tan.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHADE As a rule, select a shade that is two shades darker than your natural skin tone for a tan that is noticeable and natural. alf the battle of getting a H flawless spray tan is knowing what options are available. There are three major types of

THE BASICS OF MAINTENANCE: 1. Wear loose-fitting clothes and flip flops post-spray tan. 2. Don’t come into contact with water for 12 hours. 3. Wait one to two days before shaving and stay away from scrubs and exfoliators. Plus, moisturise daily.

Fashion I must confess I have had a couple of quickie shopping trips to Bluewater to refresh my wardrobe and have come across some nice little finds on my travels.

I have also been exploring Asos as its such a great site for buying and trying no hassle, if you don’t like it or it doesn’t fit just call them and they pick it up. So travelling light again I took a pair of my old faithful Levi 501’s cut downs which can be worn with everything, flats, flip-flops I have found a lovely ivory silk shirt in Mango bargain £49.99 worn with my Levis and a belt will be a perfect outfit for the evening and my nude Valentino ballerina Rock Studs, which teamed with my black Jamie jeans from Top Shop are perfect to travel in with a blazer. southcountymagazine.co.uk

I came across a lovely little find, an Asos white off the shoulder dress for around the pool or at the bar in the evening if I don’t feel I want to get changed and it was a snip at £30

These cute white cut off shorts from Top Shop, I bought these extra large in fact a size 12 as I could not find low rise anywhere, everywhere you go high waisted are back in fashion and this does nothing for me, at all just makes my fat belly look fatter, these I thought were a bargain only £24, team these with a nice tan belt and I can mix this with any T shirt or top. Zara have always got some great pieces in for the evening, I have found a lovely red off the shoulder jumpsuit £49.99 perfect with flats it covers your legs if its breezy but the evenings are really warm at the moment so I have my shoulders and arms free to keep comfortably cool. Bronzers OUR TOP FOUR

If like me you try hard to keep you face out of the sun even though I love having a brown body finding the right bronzer can be hard work. As with mascara and foundation, I find it pays to invest in the best. With so many options on offer, from powders to gels, it can be tricky finding the right formula for you, so we’ve tried and tested four bronzers we think are worthy of a place in your regime. Whether you’re after deep colour or a subtle sun-kissed radiance, these must-have buys won’t fail to give you the glow...

Bronzing Gel, Sensai Sensai’s bronzing gel is amazing, it comes in three shades and glides over the skin, creating a subtle glow. You can reapply for a more intense coverage as it’s not sticky and doesn’t dry fast, giving you time to blend without going patchy. 8 out of 10

£32 Soliel Tan De Chanel Bronze Universel, Chanel This is an amazing bronzer, it works even on pale skin tones. My friend started using this a couple of months ago and I noticed how great her skin looked, I am a lot darker than her but it worked great on me too. The texture is a gel/cream, so it blends very easily and gives natural warmth to the face. This is my favourite I give it a 10 out of 10.

Illuminator In Laguna, Nars I loved this Nars Illuminator liquid bronzer in Laguna for my cheekbones it really brighten’s up the face. 7 out of 10.

Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder, Chanel Chanel’s Les Beiges is one that I always carry in my handbag it gives a lovely dose of matte, natural coverage and comes in various shades, which you can either build up or apply as a sheer wash of colour across your cheeks.Perfect if just popping to the shops or you want to quickly refresh your face and it smells delightful.9 out of 10.

Pied à Terre We were invited along to the amazing Pied à Terre restaurant in Charlotte Street. Having heard such lovely things about the place and was delighted when David Moore, founding Director and the longstanding creative force behind Pied à Terre said we could come along and sample the exceptional gourmet food. On arrival we was shown to our table and offered a aperitif, Gin Martini’s with a twist and they were delicious. We decided to try one of the Tasting Menu’s, and asked if the wine could be chosen for us also to compliment each course and it was perfect, from Greek, Chilean and Australian wines followed by another Greek desert wine, it just kept on flowing and every course was mouth watering.

food & drink greek salad

The perfect

GREEK SALAD SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 red onion • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 10 smallish, sweet tomatoes • 1/2 tsp caster sugar (optional) • 1 cucumber, chilled • 25 kalamata olives, preferably stone-in • 1 tbsp capers, drained (or rinsed if packed in salt) • 1 tsp ouzo or pastis (optional) • 3 sprigs of fresh oregano, leaves picked and roughly chopped, or a generous pinch of dried oregano • 150g feta

24 | June 2016

DIRECTIONS Slice the onion as thinly as possible. Whisk the vinegar with half the oil and stir into the onion. Leave to soak for at least 20 minutes, but a few hours won’t do any harm. Cut the tomatoes into generously bite-sized chunks, sprinkle with the caster sugar (if using) and a good pinch of salt, and leave for 10 minutes. When ready to serve, roughly chop the cucumber into chunks and arrange on a platter. Add the tomatoes, onions (reserving any soaking liquid), olives and capers. Whisk the rest of the oil into any liquid remaining in the onion bowl, along with the ouzo, if using, then use this to dress the salad, along with most of the oregano. Crumble or break the feta on top, and sprinkle with the remaining oregano to serve.

gardening tips ND GENER A L TASK S A NA NCE GA RDEN M A INTE

Along with all the flourish and splendour this month, weeds are thriving too, so keep on top of the situation; hoe on warm days and leave them on the surface to wither and die in the sun. Another constant task around the garden at this time of year is deadheading

- remove spent flowers from containers, pots, hanging baskets, beds and borders and feed them all occasionally with liquid feed. Deadheading diverts energy from producing seed into producing new flowers... so is a good thing all round. Theoretically we should be home and dry now weather-wise, but be prepared Brownie-style in case of a late frost - keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast and don’t be tempted to put out your really tender plants out until the middle of the month

unless the weather changes dramatically. If it’s dry, attack ground elder, lords and ladies and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves, and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Water is a precious commodity – instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect

rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water, however, for lime-hating plants such as camellias - they will not thank you for it! Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient, so consider installing one sooner rather than later. Watering is essential once the weather is drier and

warmer - water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy) - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. For large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour - hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Beforehand, soak the

rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water with a watering can this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae.

THE ENEMY - SLUGS, SNAILS, CATERPILLARS, APHIDS... Continue the campaign against slugs and snails. They love the young shoots of delphiniums and the like, so use pet-friendly slug pellets, drench the ground around hostas with liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface or invest in a biological control (this employs nematodes to deliver a slug-lethal bacterial infection). Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off... what you do with them is up to you. Birds are your friends here - flat stones artfully located are useful accessories for birds to practise their snail catching techniques. Caterpillar and aphid infestations can be dealt with by hand if caught early enough, but should the situation veer out of control you will have to resort to insecticides or grin and bear it! Don’t forget aphids and other sap-sucking insects can transmit viruses so don’t give in to the sympathy vote.

garden guide

Our guide to

GROWING HERBS in the kitchen or outside

Few things will step up your cooking quite like having fresh herbs to hand, having the essentials when they’re at their seasonal best is a great way to spice up your cooking.

28 | May 2016

Herbs don’t need to be grown in a garden, almost any kitchen can accommodate pots or window boxes, and with the right care and attention, your herbs will thrive. Here are a few tips and tricks you need to take your kitchen garden to the next level, whether in side or out. Growing anything from seed is a bit of a task for me. For this reason, I would suggest it best to go easy on yourself and start

by planting pre-potted herbs. You can get them in garden centres and most supermarkets, and they’ll save you loads of time and energy and if you need advise there is always someone on hand to advise you. Once you have chosen you herbs now for the pots, There are a few options when it comes to what to keep your herbs in: pots, window boxes and grow bags. Whichever you pick, southcountymagazine.co.uk

guide garden

the most important thing is drainage, if your herbs can’t drain properly, they will drown. Lots of plastic window boxes have a reservoir at the bottom for drainage. Grow bags are quite useful as well, if less pretty. Pots have the added benefit of being portable so they can be easily moved around the house through the seasons. In the winter, woodier herbs can be left outside but they should be protected from frost with garden fleece. Terracotta pots are great because they’re heavy and porous, which means they will be stable, won’t suffocate the soil, and they also look great. They do, however, conduct heat and therefore dry up very quickly, so always keep an eye on them. Water your herbs every day. In summer months, it’s better to do this in the evening rather than during the full heat of the day. If using a pot, sit it on a plate or saucer, you can pour water into it and the soil will soak it up. Very coarse compost specifically made for aiding drainage in small pots and windowboxes is available (or you can make your own by mixing ordinary compost with some gravel).

trimmed to stop them from producing flowers in an attempt to reproduce, thereby affecting the quality of the leaves. Herbs often need a great deal of light to remain healthy, a windowsill is a good spot for your pots. Last but not least, give them the space to breathe and grow out, do not overcrowd your herbs or they will quickly die. We find soft herbs – basil, chives, marjoram, coriander, and so on – are the ones that will have the biggest effect you can taste when they’re home-grown and used fresh.

Give them the space to breathe and grow out, do not overcrowd your herbs or they will quickly die.

SouthCounty magazine

Soft herbs are delicate, which affects how they’re grown and used. They need care and attention when growing, and are usually only added to dishes at the end of the cooking process, or simply folded through salads, so as not to ruin their structure and subtle flavours. Woody herbs – thyme, rosemary, sage – tend to benefit from a hot, dry location. They will generally survive winter well, though flourishing less than they would in the spring and summer. Even though these herbs are resilient, they need water too – the lower, woodier branches can get hard and dry out often. Remember the golden rules for success: keep them watered, make sure they are able to drain, give each plant enough space to breathe, and prune them regularly. That’s it!

SUMMER HOLIDAY FUN AND GAMES AT Kent Life Heritage Farm Park, near Maidstone, has unveiled a packed programme of summer holiday activities and events, including a visit by children’s favourite The Gruffalo and the attraction’s first-ever Ice Cream Festival. Six weeks of fun on the farm kick off on July 23 with a fortnight of themed Nature Explorers. Check out the award-winning attraction’s nature trails, take part in animal activities and visit Kent Life’s farmyard friends. Come along on July 31 and see The Gruffalo, hear his story and meet the owls and mice he encounters on his way. Young and old alike can discover their creative side between August 8 and 21 with the Creative Crafters, when there will be plenty of crafty activities including a visit to the Paint-a-Pot Studio. From August 22 to September 4, it’s summer holiday camp time featuring traditional games and races. Enjoy some seaside fun at the sandpit and build a sand castle, or sit back and watch the Punch and Judy Show. Then on August 29, Kent

42 | June 2016

Life hosts its first Ice Cream Festival, with ice cream vendors, chocolatiers and sweet stalls galore! Why not head over to Brundle’s Big Top and catch a show, including Claws & Jaws, Flip the Clown, Kent Life Entertainers, Kent Owl Academy and Nick Spellman AnimalMan. Admission to Kent Life costs adults £9.50; children £7.50 (aged 3-15); concessions £8.50; family ticket (two adults and two children) £29.95. Members and under-threes FREE. Opening times: 10am to 6pm, last admission at 5pm. Kent Life is the county’s premier rural heritage experience, set in 28 acres of countryside. Visitors can wander through period dressed historic buildings in the charming Vintage Village; explore the beautiful gardens, orchard and one of the last

hand-picked hop gardens in the country; ramble along the wildlife discovery trail and see the last working coal-fired oast house in Britain. You can also now jump aboard the brand new land train for a tour of the gorgeous grounds or alternatively take a tractor ride. The attraction is also a real working farm, so there are plenty of animals to see, including pigs, sheep, ducks, goats, alpacas, horses and ponies. You can even hold some of the smaller animals in Cuddle Corner. Kent Life is in Lock Lane, Sandling, near Maidstone, just off junction 6 of the M20 or only an hour by train from London.
