The Hunger Games imagines a brutal, gladiatorial future In the science fiction/action/romance novel The Hunger Games, author Suzanne Collins takes us into a post-apocalyptic future in Panem, the name for what is left of North America. The continent is now divided into 12 districts and one Capitol. Panem subdues and controls its citizens by keeping them afraid and starving. Collins’ protagonist Katniss Everdeen and her family in District 12 receive meager rations on which to live. This forces Katniss to sneak out and hunt for fresh berries, herbs and meat. She has also discovered that she can barter her freshly caught meat with other residents in the district for things that her family needs. While bartering her fresh catches for bread, Katniss first meets Peeta Mellark, the son of the local baker. She has no idea of the importance Peeta will play in her life, until the arrival of the fateful 74th Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta are selected to represent District 12 in the games. Each year, the Capitol holds the Hunger
Games to remind the 12 districts of the rebellion that occurred 74 years earlier in the then-13th district. That rebellion was crushed, and District 13 was destroyed. The Hunger Games were started to remind everyone that rebellious citizens will not win against the Capitol. Every year, each district selects two young people — one girl and one boy — to participate in the games. Those who are chosen are called “tributes,” and have no choice but to take part. Each tribute is groomed by stylists, advised by mentors from their district, fed lavishly, and pampered in other ways. Yet all the time, they are being exploited. After the tributes have been trained in fighting and strategy by personal trainers, they are released into a “arena” wilderness in which their every move and sound is broadcast on the ultimate reality-TV show. Every citizen of Panem must watch the tributes fight to the death — until only one survives. To make it even more interesting, people in the Capitol become sponsors of the
tributes of their choice. As sponsors, they bet on each entrant, and, throughout the games, they can float gifts to the tributes by silver parachute. The gifts are items that the tributes can use to help them survive and defeat the other tributes. As the tributes are dropped into the arena and the battle begins, more questions arise than are answered. Since survival is the ultimate goal, how much must each tribute sacrifice for his or her freedom? What skills do the other tributes bring to the games? How do the Gamemakers change the rules to make the game more interesting? Collins creates an addictive albeit familiar plot that involves a romance between two of the tributes. That aspect helps make the novel a gripping, nail-biting story. It is truly the poor fighting for the entertainment of the rich, and our own pop culture allows us to buy into the story line. Bottom line, The Hunger Games is a great read. I had difficulty putting it down to get anything else done. Does the novel have a happy ending? Well, sort of. I’ll let you decide.

Hatter mascot time Over the years, there have been a number of various Stetson University Hatter mascots — some well-received, while others left question marks with many of the greenand-white faithful. A new era is at hand, which has created quite a stir on campus, as well as considerable interest in the community. There have been any number of hints about the new mascot for the 2012 season, and hopefully for years to come. Apparently, only a select few have a true insight on what the new mascot will look like, and they are keeping it under lock and key at this writing. However, the big day (or rather night) is almost at hand, because the official initial appearance of the new mascot is just around the corner. The Stetson Hatter men’s basketball team is scheduled to host the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, on the Glenn Wilkes Court in the Edmunds Center in Atlantic Sun Conference action. No official word on the first appearance of the new mascot; however, the Hatters may well be led onto the court after their final trip to the locker room before introductions. Then again, something special may be planned for midcourt as part of the introduction. At any rate, chances are many of those planning to attend the game will arrive a little earlier than usual to get the first look.
Football A tip of the hat to the Alabama Crimson Tide for winning the national championship game, 21-0, over the Louisiana State Tigers, who won the early-season meeting, 9-6. If you haven’t seen Joe “Mr. ’Bama” Alford around lately, don’t worry, because he’s floating around somewhere!

The others are former Daytona Beach Seabreeze High School coach Dick Edson, Seabreeze world-class runner Walker McCoy, and former DeLand Bulldog standout and Florida State University All-American Don Merrick — who was coached by Tussing.

Orlando sophomore 67 Willie Green, by way of Olympia High School, and who transferred from Daytona State College, enjoyed a “dunking-good game” here Jan. 9 as he keyed the Stetson Hatters to a 68-64 Atlantic Sun Conference triumph over the University of North Florida Ospreys. The win pushed coach Casey Alexander’s crew to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the A-Sun, tied with the Mercer Bears, and just a half-game behind the league-leading Belmont Bruins. Oddly enough, the next stop for the Hats will be Saturday night, Jan. 14, to face Belmont. It will be a homecoming of sorts for the Hatter head coach, as he was a Bruin standout during his four-year career, and then he spent 16 years as a Belmont assist coach, before taking over the Hats. Also heading to his old playing ground is Hatter first-year assistant coach Steve Drabyn, who scored more than 1,200 points during his 2000-04 career as a Bruin. Against the Ospreys, Green recorded a doubledouble with 17 points, while sweeping the glass for 10 of the 33 SU rebounds. However, it was his four dunks, including back-toback shots off missed field goals, that helped fire up the crowd. Chris Perez was the only other Hatter in twin figures, as he netted 13 points, while both Adam Pegg and Aaron Graham just missed joining him, with 9 apiece. Liam Mclnerney, 6-9, showed off his impression of guard play, as he was credited with five steals. Stetson led, 36-32, at the half, and built an 11-point lead, 55-44, with 9:42. However, the Ospreys didn’t toss in the towel, trimming the spread to a single point, 6564, with 36 seconds to play. With 14 seconds remaining, Joel Naburgs dropped in a pair of charity tosses, with Graham adding another to ice the victory. — By Roger Gilmore
Charity net action set in DeBary DEBARY — The DeBary Golf & Country Club will host its fourth annual charity round-robin tennis tournament to benefit the Volusia County Exceptional Children’s Scholarship Fund Saturday, Feb. 4. All proceeds are earmarked for transition scholarships to seniors receiving special-education services in Volusia County high schools. The format is mixed doubles, with playing partners assigned by a blind draw. There will be a silent auction of gifts baskets prepared and donated by local schools, plus a 50/50 raffle. Play begins at 9 a.m., with the fee for club members being $15, and $20 for nonmembers. The tourney will feature an Australian Open theme, with prizes from that event and an optional “lunch on the barbie” for $10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. To register, call Dr. Janet Raney at 386-822-9349. — By Roger Gilmore

Green controls — Willie Green (3) of the Stetson Hatters controls one of his 10 rebounds against the University of North Florida Ospreys in a 68-64 victory here Jan. 9. Teammate Adam Pegg (41), who sparked the 73-61 win here Jan. 7, watches the play.
SU women sail along The beat goes on for the Stetson Hatter women’s basketball team! That was the story here Jan. 9 in the Edmunds Center, when coach Lynn Bria’s squad shot down the University of North Florida Ospreys, 63-55, in an Atlantic Sun Conference clash. Not only did the victory boost the Hats to 6-0 in the A-Sun and keep them in step with the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles atop the league, but it extended their current winning streak to nine games, making it 12-straight at home, and pushing the overall mark to 15-3. This week, it is off to Nashville, Tenn., for a pair of A-Sun tests beginning with the Lipscomb Bisons today, Thursday, Jan. 12, with a holdover for a Saturday, Jan. 14, meeting with the Belmont Bruins. It will be back home Saturday, Jan. 21, for what looks like a showdown with the FGCU
Eagles at 1 p.m. Balanced scoring helped the Hats in their latest win, as Victoria McGowan nailed down her season average of 17 points, with seven of the team’s 30 rebounds, plus six steals. A trio of teammates played steady ball, with Sasha Sims collecting 13 points, while Shanasa Sanders and Cherisse Burris each contributed 10. Jadhken Kerr paced the visitors with 17 points, while Brittany Kirkland chipped in with 13 points, and while Larkira Jones had 12 of the 37 picks off the glass. Stetson held a 24-21 edge at the intermission, but the Ospreys came out after the break to take a 31-26 lead, with 16:15 to play. However, the Hats bounced back, taking a 36-33 lead with 12:21 on the clock on a 3-pointer by McGowan, and the locals never looked back. — By Roger Gilmore
Hawks down ’Dogs, 65-50 The DeLand Bulldogs (7-6) basketball team was scheduled to host the Lake Mary Rams in The Doghouse Jan. 11, before taking to the road Friday, Jan. 13, to visit Oviedo Hagerty. Next week, the ’Dogs have a trio of games in three days. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, they will return to the road to take on the talented Bulldogs at Flagler Palm Coast. The Lake Brantley Patriots will be here Wednesday, Jan. 18, for games at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., while Friday, Jan. 20, they will again be away visiting the Deltona Wolves. The ’Dogs were last on the court Jan. 6, when they dropped a 65-50 decision to Spruce Creek, where the Hawks turned the tables on an earlier setback.
For the second-straight game, Andre Rivette showed the way for the Bulldogs with a 19-point effort. Mark Przystanski chipped in with 10 points. The Hawks, like the Bulldogs, are battling to stay above the .500 barrier, as the latest win pushed them to 87. Dakota Elugardo poured in a game-high 25 points to spark the win. Brian Kilgore added 11 points. DeLand took an early lead with a 17-15 spread, but the roof fell in when the visitors managed only 4 points, and dropped behind, 33-21, at the intermission. Although the losers played nearly even in the second half, they were unable to overcome the 12point lead. — By Roger Gilmore

Porkie’s Tru South BBQ — Eatin’ just got better By Patrick McCallister
That good smell is Porkie’s Tru South BBQ at 900 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. The taste is even better. “It’s Southern-style cooking,” said owner Gary Myers. “We make everything here. We smoke the meat and cook it home-style.”
Porkie’s has got a little Southern fare for every taste. The baby back ribs are the best this side of heaven, but the good eating is just starting. There’s the pork, beef brisket, and chicken plates, too. All of them come with the killer sides: dirty taters, collard greens, baked beans, black-eyed peas, and more. Salad lovers

It also comes with pork or chicken. “Most of the recipes are out of Alabama,” Gary said. T h e Ye l l o w h a m mer State, the Heart of Dixie, is a place where folks knowthatgood food and good times go together like sauce on ribs. And Porkie’s has the sauces for those ribs. They make their own — eight different kinds. Then they handpull the meat, so every bite is flavor, never gristle. Besides the great barbecue plates, Porkie’s has chicken and beef samiches to die for. Buffet City celebrates its first anniversary in Orange City By Brian Meddaugh
The past year has been good to Buffet City. In return, Jason Ni has been offering several New Year’s specials for the hungry folks of Orange City, DeLand, DeBary, etc. His latest price break is for a group of five adults: The first four folks pay Buffet City’s alreadylow price; the fifth person eats free. Jason thinks this would be a wonderful opportunity for us to treat our special person to a birthday meal, graduation treat, or other special meal. In addition to low prices, Buffet City continues to offer their vast selection of
dishes. The food is super fresh, the service is prompt and courteous, and their hours couldn’t be more accommodating: Buffet City opens at 11 a.m. every day of the week. They close at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We are always greeted at the front door by either Jason Ni or his wife, Jess. Without exception, we observe several rows of appealingly colorful dishes, a raw bar, a grill, and a dessert bar. Some of us have gone into Buffet City thinking, “This time, I’ll pick up real small servings at each station, and that way, I should be able to eat every single dish they offer.”
Regulars — Kent and Alice Smith visit Buffet City at Welcome — When we enter the front door at Buffet least twice a week. Alice favors the “Sweet and Sour” City in Orange City, we are greeted either by Jason Ni or selections, whereas Kent goes for “everything, but especially the pork! his wife, Jess; in this case, by both of them.
That’s a lofty goal, but alas, 1070 S. Volusia Ave. in Orwe always fill up long before ange City. For more inforwe get to that last dish. mation, call 386-775-8800. Buffet City is located at — Advertisement
The bulldog special — Being a big Georgia Bulldog fan, Mark Lang gets grilled by Buffet City’s many Florida Gator fans. On the other hand, he spends a lot of time at Buffet City’s grilled-food section. His dining partner, Sandee Guldan, goes for the sushi bar and the soup.
