WELCOME TO SUMMER CAMP Parents and kids agree: when it comes to summer time fun, nobody offers an experience like the Y. The YMCA of Catawba Valley’s summer camp program is all about adventure, healthy fun, personal growth, friendships and lasting memories. During the summer children can enjoy activities like swimming, arts and crafts, sports and field trips, and learn new life long skills. Kids love the Y’s summer camp because it’s a lot of fun. Parents love camp because the Y provides a safe, educational environment where kids grow, build character and form friendships that last a lifetime.

The Y offers summer adventures for youth and teens of all ages. To ensure that everyone has the chance to experience a healthy summer filled with fun, lifelong memories, the Y offers financial assistance for those in need.

DAY CAMP

CAMPERS AGES 5 - 12 YRS.* *5 year olds must have completed kindergarten

The YMCA of Catawba Valley’s Day Camp is centered around improving the well-being of children. We believe in each child’s individuality and intentionally focus on three areas of development: friendships, accomplishment and belonging. We work to create a safe and vibrant environment that allows children to:

• Learn and master skills that nurture their passions, talents and potential. • Bond with new friends and positive staff role models to create lasting memories. • Know they belong so they feel welcome and free to express who they are. • Be Active, be themselves, and belong! • Swimming lessons included - Once per week. Daily adventures include field trips, character development, devotions, outdoor activities, swimming, silly songs and arts and crafts. Each day brings a new and exciting activity for your child to enjoy.

Afternoon snacks provided for all full day campers.

EXPRESS DROP-OFF Express drop-off is provided for your convenience at both the Hickory and Shuford locations. Each day you will drop your children off to our welcoming counselors and camp directors. The drop-off times are: Hickory & Shuford Branches: 6:30am - 8:30am

Week 1: Catch the Spirit! (June 12-16)

Show us your camp spirit through team banners, goofy hats, crazy socks, minute to win it games, Jell-O contests, friendship circles, trail mix, wacky relays, sports clinics, color wars, and more! Field Trip: No field trip Character Challenge: Caring Wacky Wednesday: Crazy sock day

Join us for our rockin’ beach party with hula hoop games, water balloon pinata, duck duck splash, water slides, water gun wars and a watermelon contest with a Luau on Friday. Field Trip: Kool Park Character Challenge: Caring Wacky Wednesday: Luau gear

Week 7: Once Upon a Y (July 24-28)

Week 2: Backyard Bash (June 19-23)

Enjoy the great outdoors as we partake in summertime classic games like tug-of-war, kickball, foursquare, hopscotch, lawn games, nature crafts, picnics, recycling projects, s’mores, and a BBQ bash to end the week. (Parents invited to BBQ bash). Field Trip: Pin Station Character Challenge: Responsibility Wacky Wednesday: Crazy hat

Week 3: To Infinity and Beyond (June 26-30)

3,2,1... Blast-off as campers learn about the solar system through hands-on activities involving the planets, stars, and moon. Make and eat moon rocks, create rockets, go on an alien hunt, and practice some jedi training through obstacles. Field Trip: Millholland Planetarium Character Challenge: Responsibility Wacky Wednesday: Star wars day

Week 4: Holidaze (July 3-7 – No Camp July 4th)

Christmas in July! 4th of July? Halloween in the summer... You may have to come to camp and find out about all of our summer celebrations. Camp will provide the fun and you bring the energy and we will all have an amazing time. Field Trip: No field trip Character Challenge: Respect Wacky Wednesday: Halloween costume

Week 5: Life on the High Seas (July 10-14)

Have some swashbuckling pirate fun! Use maps to find lost treasure, pirate hats/eyepatches/sand art, try shipwreck stew, capture the pirate flag, and survive the cannonball attacks through the obstacle course to find your way safely home. Field Trip: Emerald Hollow Mine Character Challenge: Respect Wacky Wednesday: Pirate/princess day

Week 8: Look for the Hero Inside Yourself (July 31 - Aug 4)

Meet and salute real life superheroes, take the superhero character challenge, dress up as favorite superhero, play games/make crafts and lend a hand as we pay it forward through community service and create the hero in all of us. Field Trip: Skateland Character Challenge: Respect Wacky Wednesday: Dress-up as a superhero

Week 9: Survive It (August 7-11)

Can your team survive it? Create team flags, decipher codes, scavenger hunts, noodle tag, got it, ultimate frisbee, tie dye bandanas, tug of war, tribal team competitions and immunity challenges, color wars. Field Trip: Laser Tag- Bo’s Character Challenge: Honesty Wacky Wednesday: Favorite sports team day

Week 10: Camper Skills (August 14-18)

Calling all superstars to step into the spotlight and showcase your talents through skits, games, dance, music and creative arts, as well learn about sounds and circuits. Enter the talent show and show us the next big thing. (Parents are welcome to attend talent show). Field Trip: No field trip Character Challenge: Responsibility Wacky Wednesday: Moustache day

Week 11: Peace Out! (August 21-24)†

Time to say “peace out” to summer. Travel back with us to days of root beer floats, the wild west gold rush, explore caveman drawings as you hunt for dinosaur eggs, relive the hippie days and disco, and more. Field Trip: No field trip Character Challenge: Caring Wacky Wednesday: Cowboy/cowgirl day

PRESCHOOL (SQUIRT) CAMP

CAMPERS AGES 3 - 5 YRS. HICKORY BRANCH

At the YMCA of Catawba Valley’s preschool camp, children will experience the best of both worlds: learning and play. They will have structure in their day that includes a time to learn and a time to play. Sometimes both learning and fun happen all at the same time-which is most of the time here at the Y! Morning snacks provided for all campers.

GENERAL INFORMATION SWIMMING Swim lessons will be provided once a week with age appropriate staffing ratios (1:6) from one of our trained swimming instructors. Campers should bring a towel, bathing suit, and water bottle.

BELONGINGS Please label all of your child’s belongings. If you send sunscreen with your child, please make certain it is labeled with their name.

POTTY TRAINING All campers must be potty trained to participate in our preschool camp program.

TEEN (LIT) CAMP

CAMPERS IN GRADES 7 - 10

HICKORY BRANCH Recognizing that middle school and high school students can get more out of a summer camp program, our LIT (Leaders in Training) participants learn teamwork oriented leadership. Working together on a variety of projects, our staff and LITs form a mentoring relationship. We coach our LITs, providing feedback and insight into their efforts on the different tasks they take on. Local field trips, leadership workshops and service projects are just a few of the important tools our staff use to teach teens what it means to be a leader.

Let’s get creative and create a service-learning project to complete over the course of the summer. This week you’ll learn about sacrifice and how no matter how big or small your sacrifice may be, it has a larger impact on those whom you’re sacrificing to help.

Week 2: Becoming a Strong Leader (June 19-23) | $150

Challenge yourself during a week of competitions. Battle it out in a community-wide scavenger hunt, food tournament, and blind water balloon volleyball.

Week 3: Developing Personal Values (June 26-30) | $150

Learn how to fend for yourself if you’re lost in the woods. Participate in survival scenarios where you will find your way in the woods, build a shelter, and cook a delicious meal over a fire at the Hickory Parks & Rec.

Week 6: Building a Positive Reputation (July 17-21) | $150

Learn how your reputation can affect the opportunities you may or may not have in the future. Not only will you see how quickly a reputation can be changed, but you will also learn how to build and maintain a solid positive reputation.

Week 7: Developing Goal and Priorites (July 24-28) | $150

Let your creativity shine. Discover your inner artist while creating duct tape and milk art. Dodge your way through a paint run. Enjoy target practice before running through a field during paintball at Command Decisions.

Learn CPR and First Aid along with some rescue techniques to recover a drowning victim. Then not only discover some of the hazards you may encounter at water parks and pools, but also experience the fun at Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe.

Week 8: Positive Communication Skills (Jul 31 - Aug 4) | $150 Learn the proper safety techniques of belaying and rappelling. Take what you’ve learned to Beanstalk Journey for an aerial adventure of a lifetime.

Week 9: Managing Anger & Aggression (August 7-11) | $150

On your mark, get set, GO!!! Race through this week of obstacle courses, mazes, and relay races. For our field trip this week, we will be racing gokarts at one of the available local tracks.

Week 10: Showing Respect to Others (August 14-18) | $150

One must always be respectful first before receiving respect. Learn how to show respect in friendships and in our community. Explore new ways to impact your community in a positive and respectful manner.

Week 11: Employability & Workplace Skills (August 21-24)† | $150

Explore different career opportunities while giving back to your community. Not only will you have the chance to tour a college and a corporation, but you will also volunteer with different local organizations such as the Humane Society.

BASEBALL CAMP

CAMPERS AGES 5 - 12 YRS. HICKORY BRANCH

Sports programs are a large part of the YMCA of Catawba Valley. The same holds true for camp as well. Our comprehensive summer sports camps focus on skill development and excitement of participation through a combination of dynamic drills and games. This year, we’ll be taking our baseball camp to the next level with the help of the Rembert Brothers. Through our partnership, we’ll helping your child excel in all aspects of the game while having a fun filled and engaging summer. At the Y, sports aren’t about competition, their about fun, friendship and skill development through teamwork.

The Rembert brothers are well known for their expertise in baseball. Grant, Fore, and Aaron Rembert collectively have over 35 years coaching experience at the high school and college level. With the Rembert brothers coaching our YMCA of Catawba Valley Baseball Camp, your child will experience the highest level of coaching and training the Catawba Valley has to offer.

GENERAL INFORMATION SWIMMING Each day, we’ll have pool time after baseball camp to wind down for the day so be sure to pack a swim suit and towel.

ITEMS NEEDED You will need a baseball mitt, baseball socks and pants, and a water bottle. Baseball bats and cleats are optional.†

FUN ACTIVITIES AND SKILLS Your child will learn all the fundamental elements of baseball. Hitting, throwing, pitching, and teamwork. Fun activities include a throwing competition and the Home Run Derby!

TENNIS CAMP

CAMPERS AGES 5 - 12 YRS.

HICKORY BRANCH

Campers will be instructed by Cy Smith, Tennis Director and USPTA Teaching Professional at the YMCA of Catawba Valley. They will be immersed into a unique atmosphere where they will learn the forehand, the backhand, and tennis skills that will build a solid foundation to the game of tennis. Cy will focus on basic skills and incorporate fun games to teach all tennis techniques, including positioning strategies. Campers will receive two hours of instruction each day followed by an hour of swim time.
