THRILLER PLANNING The plot of our thriller is based on one of the character’s Being framed of a murder they did not commit. It is set in An everyday location and situation; 4 students sharing a House at university. It shows two students; one male , one female, Walking down the road coming back from the shops. At the same Time another female student has found the dead body of one Of her room mates in her bed, in her room. It then presents her Being framed with the murder of this room mate, although it Becomes clear it may have been one of the other students. The Ending ends with the police being called and we are not sure Who is actually behind the murder.
Location We decided to base our Thriller opening in everyday situation to create a gritty look of everyday life like presented for example in Essex Boys, Kill Bill and Blue velvet. Therefore we decided to use a normal house for the location of where the four students live.
We decided to use stairs in our Thriller Opening has they are a common convention Of Thriller mise en’ scene and would allow us to Work with chiaroscuro lighting and create tension And a mysterious effect like used the movie ‘The Third Man’
CHARACTER IDEAS AND COSTUME •
We are going to have four student characters, 2 male and 2 female sharing an university house;
•
TILLIE- The character called Tillie, is the character who essentially gets framed for the murder Of Finn we as an audience know that she is innocent and we have sympathy for this character as we know that Hammad and Louisa probably have framed her for this murder. We witness Tillie finding the body and also being confronted by Louisa and Hammad which eventually leads to them calling the Police.
•
LOUISA – The character of Louisa is a another female student who is shot walking back from the shop with the male student Hammad, her and Hammad are thought to be behind the murder which is why Tillie is being framed, she is also the one who rings the police on Tillie, she is a mysterious and dangerous character to the audience, she could be seen as the Femme Fatelle because of her devious nature and the fact that she thought to be behind the murder.
•
HAMMAD- Hammad is another male student who is also shot walking back from the shop to the house with Louisa, also thought to of
•
Framed Tillie for the murder of Finn. Chiaroscuro lighting will be used to present this character as being evil and mysterious as he may be actually behind the murder.
•
FINN- Finn is dead from the start of the film, the Thriller opening is based on who actually killed him and it is unclear.
For the costume we are going to have the actors in everyday clothing, to Show the normality of the situation which slowly turns into a darker situation. It also helps to shock the audience as they may not be expecting what is next to happen. Normal clothes are also used Essex Boys and Kill Bill, It helps to show how this is a modern Thriller and shows the brutal reality of life and human nature.
We practiced using shot reverse shot as we knew we were going to use this in our thriller film to create tension between characters and also using close ups during this will also allow the audience to feel the character’s emotions.
PRACTICE SHOTS
We decided to take some rough shots of some camera angles we might use in our Thriller opening, so then we could work out what was most effective and what to use in our storyboards/further planning. We decided we could possibly use An Birds eye shot of the body in bed before going on to show close Ups of the dead body of Finn, An birds eye view will give the audience and perspective of the situation and establishes surroundings and the positionings of the characters in the film.
We decided that a mid-shot would Be good to use for when 2 of the students; Louisa and Hammad are walking down the road back From the shop. We could then use some closeUps of their faces to help introduce the characters To the audience and their emotions which will add To the suspicion of who actually did the Murder.
We then practiced The hand opening The door to the bedroom As when we shoot this We thought we could Film as a slow shot to create Even more tension and make The audience wonder what might Be behind it.
FAST PACED EDITINGFaced paced editing will be used in our thriller to show the anticipation between the two characters Louisa and Hammad walking back to the house where Tillie is finding the dead body. This will create alot of anticipation for the audience and creating tension within the audience is the main aim of a Thriller Movie and faced paced editing is used in a lot of movies we have studied in the Thriller Genre. For example Essex Boys, Once Upon a Time in America and Kill Bill.
SLOW MOTION EDITINGI thought that we could use slow motion editing In the beginning to our thriller movie to build up tension When the female character Tillie finds the dead body in her bedroom. This Would make it more dramatic when the audience see the dead body And build up a lot more anticipation as to what is under the covers in The bed.
EDITING IDEAS CUTS
COLOUR We decided that we will change the colour dramatically as we want to create An everyday; gritty thriller look of everyday life, therefore we want to keep The realistic colours but use lighting to use chaiscuro lighting to create dramatic effect and Tension. Although if we do decide to change the colour we could make the colour less saturated To create a colder feeling which create connotations of gloominess, griminess and a cold atmosphere For the film which is suitable as this is also used In Essex Boys in the scene at the beach, so this could Be an intertextual reference.
We decided we could Use cross dissolves and Fade to blacks so that The audience know that They are different scenes, also it will create a more professional look and could also be used for creating tension and mystery because of black having connotations of mystery and the unknown.
