T h e p i c t ures are all taken dur ing the p r e s i d e n tial elections and the post election c r i s i s i n Kenya in December 2007 / 2008. The e t h n i c a l motivated violence that broke out, after i n c u m b e nt President Mwai Kibaki was declared t h e w i n n er of the presidential election held on D e c e m b er 27, 2007, left more than 1200 people d e a d a n d more than 450.000 flee their homes. S u p p o r t er s of Kibaki‘s oppone nt, Raila Odinga o f t h e Or ange Democr atic Movement, alleged e l e c t o r a l manipulation. The Kikuyu, Kenya’s larg e s t t r i b e , have dominated Kenya both p o l i t i c a l ly and economically since independence f r o m B r i tain in 1963, stir r ing up ancestr al r ival r y w i t h t he Luos and leading to jealousy and fr ustr ation among other communities. Thousands o f s h o p s and business were bur ned and d e s t r oye d as a result of the ec onomical and p o l i t i c a l imbalance of the countr y. The o u t b r e a k of violence left one of Afr ica’s most s t a bl e a n d fast growing economies in pieces.
