Why organic clothes are better for children with eczema It’s pretty hard to see a baby or young child struggling with itchy, sometimes bleeding skin caused by eczema – when you become a Mum or Dad though, it’s even harder. It’s horrible to see a distressed child unable to cope with the constant itching and discomfort and we naturally want to try and help them as much as we can.

Eczema Eczema is a relatively common skin condition which tends to affect young children and is particularly prevalent in countries like the US and the UK where chemicals are unknowingly used by us on a daily basis. Children brought up in less developed countries, where everything as a whole tends to be more ‘natural’, rarely suffer the same as our youngsters.

It’s not all doom and gloom though and it’s good to know that we can actually do something about it. Dressing your little one in organic baby clothes, even just getting a few organic cotton baby onesies to start, will help enormously. And now that organic kids’ clothing is not so difficult to find either, you can even make life easier for your older children. Eczema can flare up when your baby is too hot or too damp as well. Add man-made materials into the mix with a sprinkling of biological washing powder and you’re asking for trouble. Try to buy washing powder for sensitive skin, the fewer additives and chemicals the better! Look at the food your children eat and the clothes they wear – the more natural the better with any kind of skin condition, but in particular eczema.

Organic Cotton Clothing Just because Granny has knitted an outfit for your baby doesn’t mean you have to dress your baby in it. Wool is a known irritant for skin conditions, so avoid if possible and buy only organic cotton clothing. Organic children’s clothing tends to be chemical-free and it’s those ‘nasties’ which can exacerbate an eczema flare-up. Clothes made to Soil Association Organic Standards tend to be softer and cotton also draws moisture away from the skin, keeping the body dry and less susceptible to itchy skin conditions. So if your baby or child has eczema and you’re at the end of your tether, have a word with your health visitor or doctor to make sure you’re going down the right track. Then have a look online at kids’ organic cotton clothing. There’s plenty out there, it is affordable and it really will help. You can browse our store for a wide range of GOTS Certified and Fairtrade Organic Baby Clothing to help alleviate eczema for your little one. Have any other tips for combatting eczema for your little one? Please do let us know so we can spread the word, we would love to hear from you.
