With the excitement of Christmas only weeks away and preparations for New Year on the horizon we offer you an exciting seasonal issue packed with ideas for the festive period. Local venues are bursting with events and activities and as you would expect at this time of the year, with businesses stocking a great range of gifts and services. We feature a number of new ventures; Mi Amore a superb lingerie shop that fits rather than measures and carries an extensive range of stock. We dine at the The Townhouse Restaurant and report back that yet another dining venue worthy of a visit has opened in Ipswich. For beautiful jewellery you need look no further than Berridges and Riley & Riley, and you should also make a call into Woodbridge-based Aspens, a recently opened store that boasts a proud jewellery heritage. Also just opened is Lifehouse a newly built spa created in beautiful listed gardens. With 89 guestrooms - all with spectacular views of the surrounding gardens and woodland - 35 treatment rooms why not be one of the first to experience it? The new Audi A1 is our car of choice this month, small but beautifully formed. You can test drive this headline-grabbing car at Ipswich Audi and perhaps you’ll be tempted to order before the VAT rise in January! Our events guide is packed as usual with numerous exciting local activities, there’s much to do so make sure you don’t miss out. Once the festivities are over, the familiar guilt pangs will set in, where better to exorcise (and exercise!) your demons than Ipswich Sports Club? Talking Scent... What to consider when looking for a new perfume Fragrance maestro Roja Dove and Professeur des Parfums said ‘ fragrance is like a cat burglar in your brain, it has the key with which to pick the lock and unleash your memories’ He has a point. From the scent of freshly mown grass taking us back to a childhood summer holiday to the aroma of the fragrance reminding us of a loved one, everything we smell evokes memories or emotions. There are any number of criteria you can consider when choosing a new signature scent but the important ones are season, personal likes and personality. Whoever said personality couldn’t be bottled clearly didn’t acquaint themselves with Mme Chanel and Mrs Lauder. As the lure of the thermostat and lots of cosy layers increases, heavier, heady scents offer a warming feel to the skin, and the senses. Fragrances launched in the winter months tend to include rich, lush components such as cinnamon, musk and cardamom, and are packaged in dark, high level luxury bottles. Case in point is Tom Ford’s Private Blend fragrance collection and Yves Saint Laurent’s new Belle d’Opium. 8
Marc Jacobs’ most recent offering, Bang for men and Carolina Herrera’s 212 VIP feature woody base notes and tick all the boxes for seasonal scents. For older seasonal scents, classic winter fragrances such as Guerlain’s Mitsouko and Shalimar still have cult status amongst perfume fans, while nothing says summer quite like Nina Ricci’s 52 year old L’Air du Temp. Those looking to multi task their scent and go cross seasonal can count on Chanel No 5 and Narcisco Rodriguez to work their magic all year round. For personal taste the nose experts at The Perfume Shop help buyers navigate the vast number of perfume options out there by grouping fragrances into family groups- floral, woody, spicy and fresh. People tend to stay with a certain smell family, either because it recreates happy memories, or simply because it stimulates their olfactory receptors. But the last word on the subject goes to Coco Chanel, who believed ‘No elegance is possible without perfume. It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory.’

New Year, new resolutions, new facilities New members Open Weekend 15th & 16th January 2011 Ipswich Sports Club, one of the town’s best kept secrets, is the place to take up your New Year fitness challenge. But it’s much more than a place to exercise, get fit and shed a few pounds – and at a competitive price. Manager, Andy Yorke, says the social scene is very important too. “We’re very much a family club with a friendly atmosphere. Whilst our facilities are top notch, we welcome people of all ages and fitness levels.” Ipswich Sports Club is the proud Suffolk home of the Lawn Tennis Association. Young tennis juniors rub shoulders with international worldranked stars including Elena Baltacha, who trains here regularly. But tennis is only part of the story. There’s the newly refurbished, fullymanned gym, with professional standard equipment and personal trainers on hand, as well as 18 studio classes a week, including Body Pump, Body Combat and Body Balance. Aspens – celebrates a centenary of jewellery... It has been another busy year for Aspens Jewellers, they may be busy promoting their new premises but they are also quietly celebrating 100 years as a family of jewellers. A tradition started by Ernst Moreton in 1910 trading in Hockley, Birmingham’s Jewellery quarter and continued today by the third generation Matthew & Daniel Moreton in Woodbridge. In April of this year Aspens opened their newly renovated luxury store on Church Street in Woodbridge to compliment their existing offering on the Thoroughfare. With the opening of the Church Street store they have launched several new brands, including Troll Beads, Jersey Pearl and Luxenter and luxury English leather accessories from Pickett. Plus they have also introduced two new watch brands Maurice Lacroix and Fortis, worn by professional pilots and cosmonauts. All of which sit alongside their offering of Vintage and Fine jewellery. Many items on display are one off pieces which have been manufactured in their own workshops that gives the customer something that is not only unique but also locally made. As Daniel comments: “Jewellery is a business that is continuously evolving, more so now than ever before. The past ten years have 22
shown how important fashion and brands are to the consumer. Industry trends we obviously have to follow but this does not alter our core business ideals, instilled by our grandfather - knowledge, fairness and customer service. “Really to understand jewellery, you need to understand its material construction, this knowledge we gained, having both trained initially as bench jewellers before moving to continue the family tradition in running the shops. “We continue to use this knowledge as we specialise in manufacturing bespoke engagement rings and gem set eternity rings to customers exacting requirements.” Using their onsite workshop they undertake all repairs to jewellery and silverware. Alongside repairs they are able to remount or remodel customer’s jewellery, and to enable them to do this they have invested for the future. As Matthew explains: “To compliment traditional skills we have the latest CNC mill and are therefore able to produce rapid prototypes in wax for the client to view, prior to proceeding their commission into Gold or Platinum. “We also undertake Insurance Valuations and Valuations for Probate. Valuations are an important part of owning and

buying jewellery. All work is completed in house including gemstone testing and the photography of your jewellery. I am very passionate about valuations and I love the fact that you never know what you are about to discover when you open a dusty old box. “As your readers are probably aware, precious metals have increase in value significantly over the past five years. Gold was trading in 2006 at approximately £300 per ounce and today is trading around the £860 per ounce. “Many people have taken this opportunity to release cash from their unused jewellery, suddenly many new companies have emerged to cash in on this unregulated market and we hear stories of under valuation and poor practise weekly”. “We do purchase all jewellery, broken or not” adds Daniel “but as we do not rely on it as our core business we are able to offer the best prices” The resulting effect of this increase in the gold price is that even high street entry-level gold jewellery is much less affordable as an everyday purchase. Jewellery is subsequently moving back to
being a luxury item for that special occasion. The high street multiples are trying to counteract this by making their product thinner and lighter and now selling Gold plated Silver and Platinum Plated Jewellery. If commodities are to stay as they are we are anticipating that many of the multiple stores will either diversify further into other products or will end up closing. Opening a new store in the middle of an economic downturn may seem a bit of gamble but this year has turned out to be one of their best so far. They are not exactly sure what to put this down too, but are hoping that all of the hard work is something to do with it. As for the future of Aspens, Daniel comments: “We obviously cannot predict the future and times are complex but as Aspens are very customer focused and we offer a comprehensive range of products and services we are hoping for many more successful years to come”. Aspens have a fantastic range of jewellery and are well worth visiting for that unique Christmas gift.

Wood Pigeon Salad with crispy parsnips & lentils caramelised pear £5, both washed down with glasses of Bordeaux. Walking home after such a fantastic spread was no mean feat, but the feast we'd had was definitely worth it. The Townhouse is a true hidden gem, really cosy, romantic and laid-back. The restaurant’s Italian born chef Michele, (formerly from Cafe Bencotto in Felixstowe) and his team take excellent, top-quality ingredients and treat them with the simplicity and respect they deserve. I have already earmarked the venue for future visits, particularly when family and friends descend - highly recommended. 27

To celebrate their second year at the King’s Head in Orford and more recently at The Ship in Levington, Susan and Adrian Searing are pleased to offer: FREE bottle of wine with any two course dinner for two The philosophy behind the food at both the Ship Inn in Levington and The King’s Head is really quite simple: produce traditional classics, with a subtle twist on presentation, that pay homage to the ingredients and their origins. Buttermans... a safe haven on a squally night. British fayre on the banks of the Orwell Buttermans Restaurant is located within the Woolverstone Marina complex. Its location is not immediately apparent so you would be forgiven for thinking you’ve made a wrong turning, but keep going - it is there, and well worth the visit. Situated right on the water’s edge of the river Orwell. Darkness had fallen by the time we arrived so we could only make out the silhouette of the Orwell Bridge that cast its shadow across the undulating water. During the day the view from the large restaurant windows is spectacular, overlooking the moored boats in the marina and onwards right up the estuary towards Ipswich. On arriving at the restaurant our welcome was warm from both the cheerful and accommodating staff and also the cracking fire – perfect for a winter’s evening. The restaurant accommodates a well-stocked bar along one wall, with well-priced wines and ales. We were pleased to be offered the

choice of a selection of red house wines, we opted for the Chilean Merlot, perfect for a chilly evening. The menu offers a great selection of predominately British fayre, so much so it was difficult to choose. I opted for the Scottish Rib-Eye Steak with wild mushrooms, cherry vine tomatoes and chunky chips (£12.45) and my guest, the highly recommended Rump of Lamb, cooked in rosemary and garlic with sautéed potatoes (£11.95). This followed generous starters of Toasted Goat’s Cheese with salad and red onion marmalade (£5.65) and Crispy Duck Salad with hoi sin sauce (£5.45). Service was speedy and each dish looked really appetising and tasted great. Our choices proved full of flavour, hearty and with a rustic edge. This married perfectly with the setting. We finished the meal sharing a Chocolate and Cherry Brownie (£4.95) and coffee. The brownie was just right - rich and gooey in the middle, served with medley of

ice creams, which was a perfect accompaniment. Head chef, Robert Sadler, is clearly passionate about food and puts a great deal of effort in to every aspect of preparation and cooking. The results are evident in the dishes on his menu. Every dish has been prepared meticulously and tastes delicious.
Head Chef, Ro bert Sadler
We were left with the impression that, as with all good chefs, nothing will leave his kitchen unless he is 100% happy, and this coupled with the fantastic reception from the front of house staff meant we left Buttermans nothing short of 100% happy ourselves! As a guest reviewer this was my first visit to Buttermans but now I’ve found this hidden gem, I’ll certainly be returning. A Christmas Pudding Christmas Rice Pudding If you don't like Christmas Pudding, try this Danish alternative that allows you to enjoy the wonderful rich flavours and festive colours of this dessert. It is a rice pudding like no other. On Christmas it is a tradition to add a whole almond to the bowl. The one who gets it, wins a prize.
2 cups milk 1/3 cup Arborio rice onds 1/4 cup chopped blanched alm 1/4 cup sherry ored 1/2 (.25 ounce) envelope unflav gelatin 1/3 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
In a saucepan, bring the milk to a boil, and then add rice. Reduce heat to simmer, and continue cooking for 45minutes on a low heat, stirring regularly. Remove from heat, and set aside to cool to room temperature. In a small saucepan, mix the sherry and gelatin; stir over low heat until the gelatin is dissolved. Stir in the sugar until completely dissolved, and then stir in vanilla. Stir into the rice with the chopped almonds. Refrigerate. Pour cream into a bowl, and whip until light and fluffy soft peaks appear. Fold into chilled rice pudding. Serve in small bowls, topped with warm dark morello cherries.

Iconic chairs If your style veers towards the traditional, you could do far worse than to invest in a lovely old wingback armchair in heavy velvet or aged leather. An original Victorian nursing chair is also ideal; built for feeding babies, they needed to be comfortable. From early in the 20th century, Lloyd Loom manufactured lovely, simple metal-framed rattan chairs that have spawned a thousand imitations. If you prefer a contemporary look, then the revival of modernist style has bought some iconic chairs back into the spotlight. Anything by Le Corbusier, Eames, the fabulous ‘Egg’, ‘Swan’ and ‘series 7’ chairs by Fritz Hansen, and the eponymous ‘Barcelona’ by Mies Van Der Rohe are all very collectible
these lovable old sofas add character to an eclectic room.Knole sofas are another old-time classic. First constructed in the 17th century, this style of sofa is more compact and structured than a Chesterfield with (usually adjustable) arms and back at the same level, and often features some exposed wood in legs, arms or at the back. Again, Knole sofas look great in a range of coverings. We’ve always rather fancied one in faded gold velvet… Contemporary classics include sofa versions of the well-known Swan and Barcelona chairs, Kofod-Larsen G-Plan sofas (from the ‘60s), and many of the Danish Modern designs from the mid 20th century. Both traditional and modern sofa styles will stand the test of time and look fabulous in any setting. Strong Statements
Stylish Sofas Traditional sofas like Chesterfields and other period styles clearly fall into the ‘design classic’ category. Whether they’re covered in beaten-up leather, chintz, velvet, or a quaint Liberty print,

Whatever the economic climate, design classics are a good investment. They should give at least a lifetime of service, and the next generation can renovate, recover and show off Mum and Dad’s good taste.

New Resolutions We set you up for 2011 Never mind losing that last (or first) 10lbs or taking up ballroom dancing - everybody has a mental list of things they really must do at home in the new year. Don’t just put up with the peeling wallpaper or a leaky tap – why not make 2011 the year you make some of those things happen. Move... Improve might be a better option in this uncertain financial climate. Homeowners are permitted certain development rights by law, and so long as a planned extension ( of loft conversion) keeps within certain restrictions, you might not even need planning permission. Go to www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information, and always check with your local planning office before work begins. January and February are often quiet months in the building trade, so you might get a deal. Make some space... If you’re anything like us Christmas will have left you with groaning cupboards and frankly a ton of stuff you don’t really need. Make 2011 the year you sort it all out: tackle clutter room by room sort out anything you’ve not used for two years or more, and recylce it, give it away or donate it to charity. There’s an army of professional help out
there if you get stuck. Wardrobe and home declutterers who will assess your style and taste, helping you to keep what suits - and do something useful with the rest. When you’ve sorted it all out, invest in some decent storage to put what you’ve keeping away: alcoves, hallways and under the stairs space should all be put to good use in the fight against clutter. Decorate... Everyone has a decorating project they keep meaning to get around to but just don’t. Whether it’s the downstairs loo, your bedroom or the whole house. Few things are more demoralising than peeling, shabby paint and the difference colour or pattern can make to a room is tremendous. There are fantastic colours and wallpapers around for the new season: get some samples, try them out and get stuck in. Finish what you started… And finally, many of us have started one or more of the above projects in January’s past and ..er..never actually finished them. Make this year the year that you finally finish the job. And if you can’t face stripping wallpaper or laying a bathroom floor, call in a professional. And let them worry about finishing the job.

Audi - licious
Although the new A1 is the least expensive and smallest Audi available, you’ll find that the company hasn’t compromised on its quality in any way. The trademark values you would expect – luxury, comfort, technical innovation and impeccable build quality are all there. The opportunity to give this greatlooking car a test drive only served to confirm what motoring journalists across the world seem to be saying – it’s small and perfectly formed. I drove the Sport version with what looked like might be an underpowered 1.2 litre engine. But I was wrong - there’s no lack of power or eagerness and the car certainly handles well and is very nippy around town. On longer runs the natty design details really come into their own, and sitting behind the wheel of the A1, there's a real sense that nothing could ever break – everything feels incredibly well made. 56
The other major advantage is that the running costs on these cleverly engineered cars are incredibly low. There’s a great excellent servicing deal that costs £250 and covers the A1 for five years or 50,000 miles and for those looking to spend the least pence-per-mile should opt for the 104bhp 1.6-litre diesel which costs just £20 a year to tax and claims an average economy figure of 70.6mpg. All in all it’s really worth test-driving this car to see just how advanced Audi are at putting all they know into a great compact package. The new A1 is now available to drive at Ipswich Audi - go on spoil yourself this Christmas!
