The production, acting and general feel of the film is very good and Ridley Scott delivers his usual package of slow motion action shots and over-thetop scale. Christmas party... Party Time... Small or large, company Christmas parties can be a talking point for weeks on end. If you’re organising this year’s event, don’t despair - here are some tips to help you along your way. Pleasing everyone at a Christmas party is nigh on impossible, but pleasing the majority is an aim that can be achieved. Ipswich and its surrounding areas offer a multitude of possibilities for a festive do, ranging from lavish events suiting companies wanting something quite extravagant to tasty meals for those smaller companies wishing to have an intimate and relaxed evening . There’s even something for those wanting to try their hand at karoke, murder mystery or the casino table. When organising an office event there are four key aspects to consider: the date, the venue, the menu and the entertainment. Some tips and advice are included below. The Date Booking a date for the Christmas party, especially in a large company, is fraught with problems and there will always be people who are unable to come. If you

are part of a larger office, the best thing to do is book a date and tell everyone weeks in advance. If you’re organising a smaller company’s Christmas party however, you could begin preparation by asking around for suitable dates and go with the consensus. Most companies prefer to book their Christmas parties before Christmas, although there are many venues that hold events

right through to late January. The most popular dates are those in the middle of December and if you’re really keen to hold your event then, it’s well worth trying to book two or three months ahead. Most offices like to hold the event on a Friday and Saturday night

(and the prices of most venues reflect this), but there are weekday and lunch options as well. The Venue When booking your venue bear in mind those that don’t live in the same vicinity as the company’s headquarters and try to be as accommodating as possible with a central venue. Options range in price and size and depend upon whether you want to attend a shared party or take over a venue for a private party. Being part of a larger group

of parties has its advantages as often the entertainment is more extravagant, but smaller and intimate parties also have their benefits. Suffolk has a large variety of pubs, restaurants and larger venues to accommodate office events. For those wanting to join in a larger party, Trinity Park at the

Suffolk Showground could be an option. Last year it offered a ferris wheel, scalectrix and wii activities with a three course meal and this year its general theme is ‘Hollywood Nights at Trinity Park’ with a steam carousal, themed activities and a Hollywood film style menu. Ipswich town football club also offers shared or private events with live bands and/or discos and the ability to include extra entertainment. Hintlesham Hall, Seckford Hall and Fynn Valley golf club are other venues offering options. This area is also full of quirky pubs and bars offering a variety of beautiful scenery, interesting décor, tasty local food and fun entertainment particularly suited for smaller companies. Issacs on the waterfront boasts a remarkable history and marine views while pubs in the surrounding villages such as the Moon and Mushroom at Swilland, the Brewery Tap in Ipswich, the Tuddenham Fountain, the Levington Ship and the range of pubs under the Deben Inns umbrella - could also provide a comforting and intimate atmosphere. Whatever sort of venue you go for it’s worth finding out some basic information to tell your guests: the start and finish/ opening and closing time, the dress code, local transport links and perhaps recommended accommodation for those guests who live further afield.

The Menu If you decide to go along the traditional route and include food at your Christmas party there’s a variety of different menus on offer around Ipswich: the traditional turkey and stuffing will be served at most pubs and restaurants but it’s also worth considering more exotic cuisines available at speciality restaurants such as Indian, Thai, Chinese, or Italian. It’s vital to ask about your guests’ dietary requirements and ensure that your venue can accommodate these. A vegetarian option is normally provided but vegans and allergy sufferers may require further attention. Drinks are also a large part of any Christmas party and you can choose whether you wish for guests to pay for their own or if the company will open up a free bar. Sometimes the latter may not be a viable choice and making guests pay for their own drinks could end up saving some bashful faces the next Monday morning. Another option is to limit the amount of free drinks or to just provide one free drink as they arrive, or drinks with the meal. The Entertainment Many venues now provide excellent entertainment, either making this the central theme of the night or just a small part. As mentioned above, many venues provide discos, live bands or karoke and nowadays there are

also a variety of other entertainment options on offer: wine tasting, casino nights and

murder mysteries are just a few that companies wanting something a little different may wish to try. If you don’t fancy these - why not create your own fun? Secret Santa, a themed/costume night or homemade dinner games usually go down well. Whatever you decide, it’s important to bear your guests in mind: there’s no point organising an extravagant and expensive affair if most people would rather just go to the local pub. Most importantly of all, remember to have fun, relax and enjoy a social evening with your colleagues.

A pub with great food...

Dining at The Tuddenham Fountain is always a pleasure with its reassuringly good service and keenly priced menu the self-styled ‘pub with great food’ offers one of the most rewarding dining experiences around. The Fountain was once the haunt of the cartoonist Carl Giles, who created the iconic character of ‘Grandma’ and lived in the nearby village of Witnersham. The proprietors Scott Davidson and Charles Lewis in his honour selected the numerous cartoons that now hang on the walls. The pub has a traditional interior and extensive garden and in the summer a vast umbrella that is just perfect for ‘al fresco’ dining. There’s also plenty of parking, clear air and a feeling of having escaped from it all when you are only a stone’s throw from Ipswich. The menu is seasonal, well priced and offers great value. Indeed the pub has been keen to keep the prices as low as possible and still manage to offer dishes that have not increased in price for the last two years. Quite a feat when you consider that quality hasn’t been compromised. Food is served at the following times: lunchtimes noon till last orders at 2.00pm, and dinner 6.00pm with last orders 9.00pm, or Saturday till 9.30 pm and Sunday noon till

3pm. You can also book a table, something that although isn’t new is worth remembering. The dishes on offer are immediately appealing and the wine list accessible with an additional selection of delicious specials. From the main menu dishes such as Chargrilled Grilled Cheddar Cheese 8oz Burgers (£8.95) are available alongside Roast Corn Fed Chicken Breast (£12.95) and Grilled Fillet of Sea Bass and Seared Scallops (£13.75). We chose from the main menu on the day we visited, but they also offer a keenly priced set menu - two courses for £12.95 or three for £15.95. With Christmas on its way Charles is keen to point out that you can book your office party at The Fountain, ‘We have a fantastic room available for Christmas parties that can accommodate up to 45 people. The menu shown opposite is available for prebooked Christmas parties from the 29th November until the 24th December. The only days we are not taking Christmas parties are Saturdays and Sundays, nor are we open on New Year’s Eve.’ Great reasonably priced food and a relaxed atmosphere are the secrets to The Fountain’s continued success. We’re sure you’ll agree!

Pheasant Forestiere with Wilted Wild Watercress Madaline Bonvini-Hamel is a self confessed food fanatic who, ‘was drawn into the whirlpool world of gastronomy’ at an early age. She writes the most sophisticated food blog on the web www.britishlarder.co.uk and has just opened her first restaurant - British Larder, Suffolk. Here’s one of her tasty autumnal dishes for us all to enjoy. To dine at the Bromeswell based restaurant call 01394 460310 1 pheasant about 500g 2 rashers of smoked streaky bacon 50g unsalted butter 150g small round onions or shallots, peeled 150g celery, diced 1 clove of garlic, crushed 150g mixed wild mushrooms and field mushrooms 100ml sherry or white wine 50ml brandy or cognac 250ml chicken stock 100ml double cream 1tsp freshly chopped thyme Salt and freshly cracked black pepper 50g wild watercress, washed Method Preheat the oven to 200°C. Prepare the pheasant by removing the legs and the breast meat from the bone. Discard the bone and wrap one slice of smoked streaky bacon around each pheasant breast. Peel the onions, do not cut the root part too deep as the onions will fall apart. Dust the mushrooms and slice them about 1/2 cm thick. Prepare the celery and garlic. Season the pheasant legs and heat a large oven proof casserole dish with half of the butter. Sauté the pheasant legs and breast until golden all over in the nutty brown butter, transfer to a plate. Return the casserole dish to the heat and melt the rest of the butter and once the butter starts to foam and turn brown sauté the onions, mushrooms, celery and garlic until golden add seasoning. As the onions start to turn darker brown, deglaze the pan with the brandy and cook until the brandy become sticky and coating, add the sherry or wine and cook until sticky and coating. Return the browned meat to the casserole dish and add the stock, turn the heat down to a gentle simmer, once boiling place the lid on top and place the casserole dish in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. While the casserole is in the oven, bring a small saucepan with salted water to the boil and blanch the wild watercress for two minutes in the rapid boiling water, refresh in icy cold water, drain and set aside. Once the casserole is ready remove from the oven and remove the lid and return the casserole to a low heat, add the cream and simmer to the correct consistency, add the fresh thyme and blanched watercress and adjust the seasoning if needed. It's optional to remove the meat from the casserole dish once it comes out of the oven, set the meat aside to rest whilst finishing the sauce by adding the cream bring it back to the boil, simmer until slightly thickened and add the thyme and blanched watercress and serve with the pheasant breast and leg meat. Spread the mixture into lightly oiled dishes or moulds, or pot in clean, sterilised jars. The membrillo will set firm as it cools and will keep for up to 6 months in the fridge.

Luxury, privacy and peace… Ufford Park Health and Spa is without doubt one of the top local spas in the area so it was great to get the opportunity to visit just as the weather is turning grey. The Spa takes relaxation to a whole new level and the allure of it’s serene, calming atmosphere means that it’s hardly difficult to spend the better part of a day there. Indeed for flexibility and convenience the day spa packages are time oriented, as opposed to treatment led. They incorporate a combination of dedicated therapist treatment time coupled with the opportunity for you to experience the very latest in heat and water therapies in the unique Thermal Suite. Because you book a slot of time rather than a single treatment you’ll be under no pressure to leave as soon as your treatment is over so you’ll have time to relax. The spa is uni-sex and provides some treatments specifically for men. So my partner and I planned completely different experiences, whilst I couldn’t wait to try the new Jessica Nails GELeration manicure he was keen to experience the hot stone back treatment.We arrived armed with just our swimming costumes and were given toweling robes, a towel and foot salts. We were talked through the session and assisted to the spa, which is attached to the main Fitness and Leisure Centre (free to hotel guests). En route, we passed a newly40

equipped gymnasium, an indoor pool with a jacuzzi, and a steam room and sauna. After a brief walk through the pool area, we reached the spa that is very impressive with its contemporary décor - a fabulous environment. The Thermal Suite is centered around an immersive 17' by 10' bubbling hydro pool which is surrounded by a ring of exotic rooms offering dry and steam heat treatments which followed ancient bathing rituals. These include, the Aroma Steam Room - where a combination of aromatherapy essences, designed to help you relax. The Mineral Grotto – a hot steam room that features salt and essences which aid healing and relaxation. A Soft Sauna – a traditional pine room where you can relax in hot and balmy, yet comfortable air with calming essences. We were expecting the sauna rooms to be too hot to spend much time in, but instead found the heat to be very gentle and effective, enabling us to circulate between the three rooms relaxing and winding down in the process. The lighting and smell of each individual room along with the temperature changes gives you a real sensory experience and on leaving the spa we both felt calm - yet energized! Indeed we were so relaxed that we nearly forgot that lunch is part of the spa package and soon realized it was time to leave the thermal suite to retire

to a private sitting room – the sanctuary –where we enjoyed a delightful glass of Pinot Grigio and salad – although I must confess to a tuna-filled baked potato as well. Fortified, it was off to our treatments… On a course recently the speaker was waxing lyrical about her new gel nails so I was interested to try the Jessica Nails GELeration manicure. I’ve never had any artificial nail system, however, I was very pleased with the result. The varnish goes on as normal, but is dried under UV light making your nails look smooth, natural and giving perfect coverage. They last for weeks without breaking or chipping so you can go from gardening and athletics to a business meeting and an evening on the town knowing that your nails will be perfect. Then, once they have grown in 2/3 weeks an infill appointment will keep them looking great for another two weeks or you can simply soak them off – this is another benefit of this range is that the nails soak off causing no trauma to your natural nails, unlike other gel nail systems.

All though a bit of a body treatment virgin, he was very impressed with the combination of aromas and exfoliating massages that really worked a treat. What we are reading... Pereira Maintains By Antonio Tabucchi

This was first published under the more assertive title Declares Pereira. The change is entirely appropriate to this graceful, gripping book. Pereira writes for a down -at -heel paper in Lisbon in1938. Portugal suffers under a dictatorship. Across the border the Spanish civil war rages. Pereira wants no trouble, just to be left alone with the memories of his deceased wife. All this changes with the arrival of an energetic young man who is not scared of the authorities in the least. Pereiraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s awakening is beautifully conveyed and, whilst he spends much of the novel maintaining his opinions, by the end he has well and truly declared them.

Witty, sometimes shocking and often quite lovely this is about as far from tagging railway bridges as you could get. There are some great decrepit super-heros stencilled onto the sides of derelict buildings in rural Norway and of the artist who puts knitwear on statues.
