PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome all players, coaches, supporters and club members to Michaels Ave for Queen’s Birthday Weekend – we hope you all enjoy your weekend of football and we hope to see you up in our clubrooms after your game. A Special welcome to both of this weekend’s main opposition – firstly recent rivals Birkenhead who come to Michaels Ave on Saturday night in a familiar position – in 1st place. The relationship Ellerslie and Birkenhead have has been built up over the last couple of seasons while both clubs took a similar route in terms of building a club capable of competing in the premier league rather than just a team – regular Metro appearances through the youth grades and strong showings in Napier and in reserve team football show that. It’s no surprise to us that Birkenhead sit so high in the Premier League this year after winning promotion last year, we all tipped them to finish top 4 and challenge for the title such was the quality of their squad and coaching –so welcome to Paul Hobson and his young team of stars, we hope you enjoy our new facilities and the atmosphere of a pumping Michaels Ave. Central Utd (our Monday afternoon opposition) are a different kettle of fish altogether – we recently played them in the league and we were disappointed to lose 1-0 in a game we thought we deserved something from. That all means nothing now as this Central team have been bolstered by some O-League stars and broke Birkenhead’s impressive 30 game NRFL unbeaten run last week so we know we are up against it. Cup holders Central will be looking to start another impressive cup run and they will be a formidable side, but one we relish facing off against. Best of luck to Zoro and his boys on Monday.
To all the rest of the visitors to Michaels Ave this weekend, please enjoy the game and our new facilities – we have hot food and hot drinks available both on Saturday night and Monday afternoon pitch-side and cold drinks and more hot food available from our clubrooms throughout the weekend (just pop around to the front of the YMCA building and our club entrance is opposite the road coming up the hill). Finally best of luck to all the Ellerslie teams this weekend – give it your best shot!

PRESIDENTS REPORT It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Ellerslie Football Club, to extend a warm welcome to our visitors from our fellow NRFL Premier and Reserve Club teams, together with our own Club members and supporters, to our recently completed new facilities at Michaels Avenue Reserve. We trust that you will all enjoy the benefits associated with the completion of Stage 1 of our Reserve’s Redevelopment Plan, and look forward in anticipation to further facilities improvements over the next year or so. A lot of publicity has surrounded Auckland Council’s recent commitment to embark upon a 10 year plan to significantly upgrade field capacities across Auckland, with a prime initiative being the installation of more artificial surfaces. As a Club that has been at the forefront of this , the opportunities that such surfaces present to coaches, players and supporters was brought into stark focus recently when within a number of hours of a typical Auckland tropical downpour, our members were able to continue their training and playing regimes uninterrupted, whilst other Clubs wrestled with the logistics of ground closures etc. The positivity that is now palpable around all aspects of this Club is fantastic to see and feel. The challenge for all of us is how to gain the best value and outcomes for our members from the significant investment both made, and still to be made, in the improvement of our facilities. But ultimately, facilities are only one aspect of this Club’s Strategic Plan and we all have a role to play in identifying ways and means by which our players, coaches and supporters can come together to make this Club, the Club of choice in our region. So, come and get involved. Best wishes to Warren Parke, Chris Wallace, their support staff and players in both the Premiers and Reserves, as they continue on their respective journeys tonight. Kind regards Mark B. Weipers President

CAPTAINS REPORT It has been a big step up for Ellerslie football after gaining promotion to the NRFL Premier League in 2012. In the first eight games we have picked up two wins and two draws which currently has us sitting 7th on the table which is a respectable start considering only two of our players have had any premier league experience. This year we have been competitive in every game and have fought hard for 90+ minutes every week. Last week’s 2-2 draw coming back from 2-0 down with 10 men against Three Kings United shows the heart of the squad. Everyone is very passionate about our football and the hard work that we put into every minute of every game is our squad’s biggest asset. We never give up and never will and that is why we will be successful this year.
The reserves team is going very well this year sitting 2nd on the table which shows the depth we have at the club. The majority of the team are made up of young players who are going from strength to strength and are pushing on the door to get a first team spot which is very important for the club as a whole. In the second round of the season I have no doubt that we will continue to improve and come into our own picking up some good wins against quality sides. This is not only due to the heart of the players on the field but also due to the commitment and passion we have in the coaching staff, management and through our supporters. Finally I would like to say a big thank you on behalf of the team, coaching staff and supports to Tim Adams the club chairman. Not only does he do ‘chairman things’ and ‘manager things’ he is at the club every night to open up and close the changing rooms and turn the lights on and off. Without people like Tim, football clubs struggle to function and we are very fortunate to have him. To all the supporters, please continue to get down to the games. Your support and noise is greatly appreciated and we hope to have

all of you here for our Chatham Cup game against reigning champions Central on Monday night. Remember Tim has copious amounts of alcohol for the team that has the most people dressing in red up in the clubrooms after the game! TEAM JIM BEAM!

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT It was a very dark day in Auckland weather wise last Saturday as we made the short trip over to Keith Hay Park to face Three Kings Utd. With heavy rain forecast for the afternoon the reserve team fixture was removed from the no1 pitch and while disappointing for the players it proved to be the right thing to do as it was already soft due to the rain overnight. We started well enough but the game never seemed to settle and went from end to end and while it was played at a good pace and in good spirit certainly was not a classic. It did not take long for the rain to really hammer down and as the dark clouds became grey our day became black, as we conceded a penalty that Kings put away, and not 10 minutes later conceded again from a corner. So a 0-2 deficit as we went in out of the rain at half time. We all knew we had let ourselves down and all reflected on the intro duction of Tom Damon for Ollie Mullane at the 30 minute mark and how he had shown in 15 minutes, the fighting qualities we needed to put into our second half effort in order to turn the game around. Ollie Ryan O’Sullivan clashes with Calvin Opperman had come off after pull ing his hamstring and Tommy came on and sent a message to all with his explosive entrance. As the second half got underway we settled in nicely and began to look much better in possession, when unbelievably Tommy was given two yellow cards in the space of 10 minutes and left the fray, thinking you cannot tackle in this country, as in the referees words a tidy challenge was seen as not thinking about the opponents wellbeing on a slippery surface. We changed our shape to accommodate the loss and settled into the match once more. Mike Ritchie who moved back into the centre back position vacated by Ollie was look-
12
FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT ing after the impressive Colligan and was instrumental in all things defensive as he lead the back four through some difficult Three Kings sorties. Ryan O’Sullivan began to look very strong beside Mike and this gave us a platform to push on. We decided to go three at the back and push for something out of the game, remembering we only had 10 men but confident in ourselves. We had brought on Andy Wallace at half time and he was proving a handful. Now it was time for Dyl an Manickum to enter the fray. Dylan was ex cellent from his first silky touch to the final whistle and he gave us an edge going forward. With 15 minutes to go we were troubling our opponents and they felt Ollie Mullane chasing the Three Kings Cpt the pressure as Nathan Palmer was tripped in the box and up stepped Will Roper to convert from the penalty spot. We had them rattled and their heads were down. Within 10 minutes we had equalised when Will again, rose to a cross from the left flank and directed his header over the stretching keeper. Both teams now wanted to finish strongly and get the win however after a hectic 5 minutes the referee blew it up and on a grey day we shared the points and while we were disappointed we did not get three points we were rightly pleased that we found ourselves good enough to do what we had. Mike Ritchie picked up the MOM with a terrific performance and now looks like keeping Ollie’s CB role warm for his return. A very big weekend for us this week so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those supporters for your efforts in advance.
Cheers Warren

RESERVES REPORT Two weeks ago we hosted East Coast Bays here at Michaels Ave. In typical fashion East Coast Bays turned up with a young team who like us play a good style of football defending well out of possession and attacking well in numbers through the midfield and out wide. Having said that, we dominated the midfield and our defence was strong with good shape and we were never really under pressure in front of goal. However midway through the first spell we gave away a dubious penalty to go 0-1 down but Alex pulled one back just before half-time and we went to the sheds tied at 1-1. Shortly after half-time we replaced Callan Manickum with Jordan Oosterhof out wide on the left in what was to be the sub of the season so far. Jordan injected himself into the game and from his first touch put Alex into space but the keeper saved well. From then on Jordan tormented the East Coast Bays defence with his deft touches and speed and they lost their shape. Our midfield continued their dominance and with the size of the field and the speed of the game taking effect space began opening up. Jordan went on to score three goals and was awarded man of the match for his effort. A fifth goal was scored by Tommy in his first outing for the reserves after coming back from a couple of weeks holiday and we finished victors at 5 -2 cementing our second place on the table 1 point behind Hamilton Wanderers.
Last week we were away at Keith Hay Park against 3 Kings. With the torrential rain all week we were moved off #1 to #4 which was in surprisingly good condition but uneven, bumpy and small which was a real leveller and suited 3 Kings who were not as technical as us. The game meandered a bit in the first half and while we played well continuing to play to feet and move the ball around we also added in a number of ill directed and over hit long balls which were easily dealt with by 3 Kings back 4 or their keeper and we went into half time 0-0. At half-time we talked about backing ourselves and playing to feet particularly to Alex up front and also to have more shots to test the keeper a bit more.
16
RESERVES REPORT This worked and early in the second half Callan Manickum pounced on a parried shot giving us a 1-0 lead. Sometime later a pin-point Myron Manickum pass from left back found Alex in space who finished nicely making the score 2-0 which was how the game finished. For me, in trying conditions this was probably our best all round performance with good games from most players. We held good structure, defended well and tenaciously in numbers and broke forward quickly playing good football out from the back through the midfield. Man of the match today went to Callum Waters who at 18 played a very mature attacking midfield role today taking on board and executing a number of strategies we had been training. To all team members consistency week in and week out is the key to a great being a great player so let’s kick on this week and continue improving. This week on Saturday we welcome Birkenhead who are top of the Premier table and I am sure that both games will be entertaining and fast with the Michaels Ave surface allowing the players to express themselves. Good luck to Warren and the boys, let’s get those 3 points. Best Regards Chris Wallace.

WHERE IS MATT? The number one question I am asked by the players revolves around Matt usually it’s where is Matt or what time is Matt getting there or do you know where Matt is - variants of the same question really. So where has Matt been? Off on a FIFA course in London about Football Medicine—he has been rubbing shoulders with an England manager with a lisp and a high profile Uruguayan (not the biting variety) - so welcome back Matt even if the guys don’t admit they missed you I did (even if it’s just so I can stop answering the above questions). I’m back! Did you miss me? For those who didn’t notice how much quieter things had gotten, or the fact that I seemed to have transformed from the one bearded fella into 3 younger and fitter fellas, I have been away for a little while. And for good reason – I went to London for the 22nd Annual Football Medicine last month. Sounds impressive doesn’t it? Sounds even more impressive if you recognise that almost all of the names of the speakers are the top dogs in the world of sports medicine and, more importantly, Football Medicine. It was a fantastic opportunity to hone my ever-growing knowledge about football injuries, and what the most up to date research shows, and what other tricks I could learn to help keep everyone performing. It was also an ideal situation to meet some true giants of the game – Alan Smith, Gus Poyet, Gianfranco Zola and Woy Hodgson.
18
WHERE IS MATT? I am not going to keep harping on about the conference, who I met, etc. No. I am going to summarise below exactly what the best of the best recommend players do regarding football injuries:
Prevention is better than cure – a simple 20min warm up program decreasing injury incidence by 65% Early intervention of injuries is key for early return to play – getting someone to assess any injury is best done as soon after it happens as possible Self-management is paramount – looking after yourself after sustaining injury (i.e. icing regularly, not drinking whilst injured, etc.) expedites recovery Adherence to prescribed (appropriate) rehab is a priority Trust your physiotherapist/doctor – do not second-guess their opinion or ask Dr Google, it’ll just lead to delayed recovery Stick to the time frames given – trying to get back too early will lead to on -going issues or development of new problems Not exactly new concepts are they? However, it is scary how often simple things like the above are ignored. Players should stick to the simple things and leave it to your health professionals to worry about the more complicated things. It’s why we’re here and why we put so much time and effort into making sure everybody is firing on all cylinders. Regards Matt Hylla EAFC Physio

FOOTBALL CLUB RANKINGS After the weekend’s games Wellington Olympic and Miramar Rangers continue Wellington’s hold at the top of the club Rankings. The Greeks kept their 100% record intact and have edged further ahead of their great rivals courtesy of a 3-2 win over Western Suburbs, while Miramar were held 1-1 at home by Wairarapa Utd. The CPL is already looking like a two-horse race. There are no really big clashes in the CPL this coming week, but look out for the Miramar Rangers-Wairarapa Utd repeat in the Chatham Cup – this time there has to be a winner. Up into third place in the Rankings is Roslyn Wakari following an impressive 2-1 victory over Caversham AFC; incidentally this was Caversham’s first league defeat since July 2011. Unlike the CPL the FSPL is a real log-jam at the top of the table with just three points separating the top five teams. The fixture to watch this week is Otago University vs Caversham AFC.
And moving into fourth place in the Rankings is Christchurch’s Western after a 4-0 defeat of Nomads Utd. Western has benefited from Rankings points earned in Chatham Cup and English Cup games; they currently only sit fourth in the MPL. Western face Ferrymead Bays in the Chatham Cup on Queen’s Birthday Monday in another key Rankings match up. And in fifth spot (up seven places) in the Rankings are MPL leaders Nelson Suburbs. Although it was no real shock the top of the table clash against Ferrymead Bays went Nelson’s way - the magnitude of their victory, 4-nil, certainly caught the eye. Another huge league game for Nelson comes this week, at home to Cashmere Technical who sit in second place in the MPL. There are no NRPL teams in the Rankings top five although East Coast Bays and Birkenhead Utd sit in sixth and seventh, respectively. The Bays were held 1-1 by lowly Waitakere City, whereas Birkenhead Utd suffered their first league defeat of the season 4-5 to Central Utd. Approaching the half-way mark the NRPL is still wide open, with any one of five teams looking likely champions. The big Rankings movers this week are Napier City Rovers (up six) and Petone (down seven), but look for more big movements this weekend after many sides double up league games with Round Two Chatham Cup fixtures. The Rankings will be updated next on June 4 th.
