PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE AFC VS MANGERE UTD

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Today we welcome Micky and his Mangere team to Michaels Ave, it’s the first time the Centre Park based side have played here since 2009 when we lost 3-0. There has always been the feeling that Mangere were too good for Div 2 but were unlucky with their attempts to get promoted. So it was no surprise to us last year when they followed Western Springs into Div 1 football. When I received their team list I noticed there was no lack of ability from the guys in their team, ASB Premiership experience in Mario Bilen and Aeron Bawdeker and NRFL Premier League experience from Eamon Goodin to name just a few – It’s no reflection of this team’s ability when looking at their position in the league table, and I imagine they will be wanting to push as high up the league as they can. So Warren and his team must be focused and play the team infront of them on the day, don’t worry about all the other things going on, just get out there and fight for those 3 points! The Reserves today have yet another challenge infront of them – their focus is to not give Melville a sniff at the title – for those with good memories you will know we lead the premier league reserves last year in a similar fashion with another Hamilton side (Wanderers) breathing down our necks, and we stumbled and ended up 4th, so the motivation is there fresh in our memories to keep on pushing, every game, every half, every minute! In the reverse fixture earlier in the year the Mangere reserves caused us problems – they were very well organised defensively and we struggled to break them down, I’m sure the challenge of playing the league leaders will give them an extra boost for this game. Sadly no team list for the reserves was supplied so we won’t know who is who. For the rest of the club this weekend is a cup round – some teams did manage to play their first round a couple of weeks back but for most teams today is the start of hopefully a long cup campaign – highlighted fixtures for me are: Div 5 Hicks gave up home advantage to play at Bill McKinley Park against Div 2 Uni-Mt Blues Our Highest ranked team Div 1 KB’s make the overseas trip to take on Div 2 Waiheke Underdogs Div 8 Woods take on Div 3 Three Kings Thunder at Point England. Top of the table 040’s Mustangs take on 035’s Beachlands Maraetai at Simson Reserve First year in the seniors Women’s Div 4 take on a tough side in Metro Div 2 at Eastdale More information about these fixtures and the rest of the Ellerslie AFC family can be found later in this program! Good luck to everyone this weekend, we look forward to seeing your results and hearing your stories over a beer back at the clubrooms, and don’t forget the kitchen is open! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

NRFL DIV ONE PREVIEW Melville vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Gower Park 1 2:45pm Saturday A battle of the M teams - it’s almost a tale of two free-scoring strikers in this match, will Leon Newell or Jaryd Colligan catch fire and lead their team to victory in this game? No matter the result I tip MAP to thoroughly enjoy the bus ride back from Hamilton TIP: Even match up front - home advantage and a solid back four see’s Melville with the points for me. Takapuna vs Eastern Suburbs Taharoto Park 1 2:45pm Saturday Taka will be wondering what they have done to lose the rub of the green the last 3 or 4 weeks - Suburbs on the other hand will be trying to bounce back from their first loss and then a week off and all without two players who sit out after seeing red at Seddon fields - very interesting match up! TIP: I can’t decide between a draw or a last minute Taka winner…. Western Springs vs Hibiscus Coast Seddon Fields 1 5:00pm Saturday Both teams need the points in this game - Coast to stay within touching distance of the top 3 although if Suburbs lose they won’t fall any further behind the final promotion spot. Springs on the other hand have popped their heads up at the top of the table and I’m sure won’t want to give it up without a fight. TIP: Springs just too good around the park for the Coasters - Red cards a factor Papatoetoe vs Manurewa Murdoch Park 1 6:00pm Saturday Toe with their night game debut this season - slightly miffed they have stolen our kick off time but there is more to this game than the kickoff time!!! This match could decide the team going down from Div 1 this season - both teams on a run of poor form and both equal on points. TIP: For me Rewa the better side on paper, but Toe want it more - Rewa havn’t picked up a single point this season away from home - Toe for the win! North Shore vs Metro Allen Hill 1 2:45pm Sunday Not much riding on this game - both teams safe from relegation really and not much hope of getting into a promotion spot either - so a bit of personal pride in this one and for the home side they will want to prove they could be a contender next season after a horrid season when they narrowly missed promotion to Premier League in 2013. Metro might spend more time in this game yelling at each other than the two guys from grumpy old men but it works for them as they continue to hold the “dysfunctional” tag at the NRFL party. TIP: Metro just to have enough here - although it will be close.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT Re: Napier U19's Tournament

Ellerslie AFC are pleased to announce the confirmation of Terry Torrens as the head coach for the 2014 Tournament. Senior Club Director of Coaching Warren Parke (who will also form part of the coaching team in Napier) was pleased to confirm Terry (the ACFC U17's Tournament Winning coach) and was excited about our chances in this years tournament, which will naturally include a number of players who featured in Terry's title winning U17's team. The other two coaching positions are likely to be confirmed shortly, and will most likely be from within the Senior Clubs existing NRFL coaching group. Team Manager Tim Adams is the 5th member of the group and hopes to be able to confirm a physio to the coaching group in the next couple of weeks. A schedule is being confirmed at the moment, which will involve dates for the pre-tournament trainings and games as well as information regarding the tournament itself. Invites will be sent to club players shortly with as much information as possible so potential players and parents can forward plan as much as possible. KEY INFORMATION: - Napier Tournament Dates 24th to 27th October 2014 - We will be staying at Bluewater Hotel in Napier - The team will be travelling down on Friday the 24th, leaving in the early morning - The team will return some time on Monday depending on how far we progress - Players will need to contribute a fee to be eligible - fee will be confirmed in your official invite If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Ellerslie AFC Senior Club Chairman Tim Adams on chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Auckland-based football fans are in for a treat in the middle of next month after both ASB Chatham Cup semi-finals were drawn to be played in the City of Sails on Tuesday. The semi-final draw for the 91st edition of the club competition was made at ASB Bank’s North Wharf headquarters in downtown Auckland by New Zealand Football Competitions Manager Chris Kemp and ASB Bank Executive General Manager of Marketing and Communications Roger Beaumont. After coming from a goal down at halftime away to Melville United in their quarter-final played on Saturday, first time semi-finalists Onehunga Sports have drawn a home clash with two-time winners Cashmere Technical of Christchurch. The defending ASB Chatham Cup champions earned their trip to Auckland courtesy of a 3-0 away victory over Dunedin Technical on Sunday which saw All Whites midfielder Aaron Clapham score the game’s opening goal. Meanwhile, the second semi-final will see Central United play host to Napier City Rovers. Five times winners Central earned their last-four spot with a 2-0 victory over Hamilton Wanderers at Kiwitea Street on Sunday while Napier City Rovers – four times ASB Chatham Cup champions – progressed courtesy of a come-from-behind 4-1 win over Wellington’s Island Bay United. The semi-finals of the ASB Chatham Cup will be played on the weekend of August 16-17 before the competition final on September 7. Both semi-finals of the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup were drawn and played in Auckland earlier this month as Glenfield Rovers and Forrest Hill Milford United booked their spots in the final. FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT 27/07/2014 Michaels Ave Reserve Ellerslie vs Papatoetoe Final Score: 3-0 Ellerslie Goals: Alex Wi$eveen, Nathan Palmer, Dominic Higgins Last weekend we took on Papatoetoe and it was the second game in a row we had started a bit slow, however just like against Takapuna even though we were not playing all that well we didn’t leak a goal and probably should have put away a few chances. Our first goal - a cooly finished effort from Alex Wi$eveen was almost inden7cal to Nathan’s opening goal against Taka the previous week - it was a bit of a shame for the big bloke in goal for Toe as he was and went on to have a stormer of a game. We were in no mood to give back this giI goal though and used it as fuel during the halIime break to drive on and really kick on in the second half. The halIime lollies and Gatorade (and possibly a few things I said) seemed to have switched the boys back into football mode as we went out and dominated the second half , a fine 2nd goal when Nathan Palmer nodded in a great cross set the tone and Dominic Higgins (on for Alex at halIime, he had picked up a knock in the first half and we didn’t want to take any risks) finished off the contest with a giI at the back post from a Ser Mar7n of Pike square ball. That was all 3 points in the bag on a crucial weekend where Suburbs ended up dropping from 1st to third due to their postponed match against Melville this game will now be played at the end of the year and could end up being crucial points for Suburbs.

10

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT It’s back to training for the team and they are itching to set the record straight against Mangere who beat us 1-0 in the first round - in what was easily our poorest performance this year. I would offer very long odds for us to come out with anything near that level of performance today - however we can’t take Mangere lightly as their unique style bothered us last 7me and we have to stay focused and play our game and see if we can get them to adapt to us. Finally a word of encouragement for both Chris and Ben and their teams - we were lucky enough to get two reserves teams in the NRFL this season and it’s a massive achievement for both these guys and their teams to be winning their leagues - so keep up the good work guys and bring home 6 NRFL points.

Cheers Warren

RESERVES REPORT Last weekend we hosted Papatoetoe at “The Ave”. We came into this match at the top of the table and six points clear of second placed Melville who had a bye while their firsts play their Chatham Cup quarter final. The boys had been training well and were very mo7vated to maintain our winning ways for the remaining 7 games. Pre-game my focus was to ensure there the boys were focused on the task ahead to maintain our winning ways and not take anything for granted. In the first round we won 6-0 and I think Papatoetoe did not want a repeat as they oIen had 5 at the back when we were in possession and so the start of the game was a bit of an arm wrestle. AIer about 15 minutes we changed our forma7on from 4-3-3 to 3-3-4 and started causing real problems for their defence. The pressure told 10 minutes later on the 25 minute mark when Niall intercepted another Papatoetoe long ball inside our half. Niall quickly fed Mike Glenny who found Jordan Oosterhof out wide right on the a$acking third line. Jordan cut in and deIly threaded a pass to Callum Waters making the third man run. Callum burst through the defence and blasted home for his 6th goal of the season. Our second goal came 10 minutes later, a classic Jordan goal, chipping the keeper for his second of the season. The third goal came right on half 7me. Mike Glenny again featuring with an accurate thread ball which Adam Sco$ gathered and fired home. At this stage I was pre$y happy with the way we were playing but just reminded the players to not let any complacency creep in. In the second half we con7nued domina7ng possession but squandered too many chances with wild and inaccurate shoo7ng/finishing. The only goal and our forth came in the 55th minute. A Rob Hall intercept and pass was completed by Monju with a nice half volley chip over the advancing Papatoetoe Keeper.

RESERVES REPORT Man of the match went to Callum Waters for an all round 7dy game in midfield. He won a lot of possession, passed accurately and a$acked and defended well. I am very pleased with the way in which all team members are playing. We have been able to include in a number of games some of the younger U19 players. Both Sena and Marcus have joined the squad and are stepping up to the challenge of senior football. Also against Melville three weeks ago Dan, Alex, Art and Rahul from Terry’s U19 team stepped in to cover for player injuries and absence and performed very well. This shows the depth that the club has with talented young players which bodes well for a successful end of year Napier U19 tournament and also the senior club next year and the years ahead. This week we welcome Mangere to Michaels Ave. All the best to Warren, Hoops, Russo and all the first team boys for a successful day. Best Regards Chris Wallace.
