PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE AFC VS THREE KINGS
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE We are very pleased to welcome Neil Sykes, Graham Pearce and Three Kings to Michaels Ave Reserve for tonight’s Northern League Premier League game. Tonight is a bit special for several reasons – it’s our last home game of the season and if results don’t go our way it could be our last home game in the Premier League for a while – that’s not to say that the Ellerslie members don’t appreciate what our first team have put in this season, they do. The lads have shown this season that they deserved their shot at the big time and while results on the field haven’t gone our way we have won many admirers for both our commitment to energetic high tempo football and our facilities coupled with our bold move to have night games in the Premier League. Injuries and a lack of goals as a team have held us back from what we feel could have been a decent season, that said an impressive defensive record against some quality teams cannot be sneezed at. If it’s our fate to be relegated we will do it fighting and with a passion and commitment that we hope will see us back in the big time before too long. Three Kings come to Michaels Ave tonight on the back of some good form – so they will be a very tough assignment for us, they boast some of the league’s top marksmen so it will be a test for us to see if we can keep our goal mostly intact throughout the game. Another highlight is the return of ex-Ellerslie player Harrison Sage, Harry is having a great year with Three Kings and he is widely respected within the club – it’s great to see you back Harry and all the best for tonight’s game! The Reserves clash will be the curtain raiser for the main game but there is a lot riding on this game for Chris and his team. After a disappointing loss last week the title race has come down to the wire and we need three points to keep in the hunt – Three Kings gave us a tough game last time and are better than their league position suggests so it should be a good game. A quick welcome for the Three Kings reserves player-coach James Montgomery who is also an ex Ellerslie player. Lastly thank you to everyone who came down to support the First Team and Reserves this season – your vocal support on the sideline has meant a lot and we appreciate everything you have done, particularly the strong support from The Hill on the far side – hopefully we can sign off on our 2013 home season with 6 points for you! Regardless of the result we would love to see you up in the clubrooms after the game – there will be hot food available from the canteen and cold beverages from the bar! Kind Regards Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman ELLERSLIE AFC

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT A visit to East Coast Bays was the order of the day last Saturday afternoon. Bays are on top of the league with Birkenhead close in attendance. So it was always going to be difficult but again we went into the match with confidence. We had done our homework on them and I was at the game with Central when ECB thumped them 7-0 so there was plenty of respect for what they are capable of. We set the team up accordingly and were in the match to a point but getting moved about too much to be comfortable, so in order to get us more involved and give us a chance of more possession we changed our shape. You don’t do that lightly, but you cannot let a team like ECB dominate the possession stats as it leads to one thing only. So with the change, we settled quickly and looked better equipped to play our part in things. We had to work hard as they were very good going forward and had us opened up at times down both flanks. It was from a Del Monte cross to the back post that saw them take the lead after Mike Ritchie had been pushed in Will and his facials the back to clear the way for the header. The officials saw no problem and the goal was given. Not long after, we were let off with a warning, as a handball in the penalty area from us was not picked up by the referee. We had a couple of half chances, although at this level a half chance is a chance in my opinion to equalise before the break but took the deficit into the sheds. In the first half Sean Dowling had pulled of two excellent saves to keep the match tight and in the second half, he had half the workload, as we defended better and were going forward in a more assertive manner. We shifted the front three about and this added a different approach to our movement around the attacking third and we troubled ECB at times.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Eddie Sillars was again looking strong and Scott Wallace and Tommy Damon were pressing very well in the middle of the park. We were playing well enough up front but Paul Hooper and I felt we had players on the bench that would make an impact and Eddie and Tommy against Hamilton Wanderers pulled Will Roper off to allow Alex Witteveen on. Will was not best pleased but that is because he is such a competitor. Alex still has a raw game and is a real handful, so his introduction gave us a physical edge in the old centre forward role as the impressive Dylan Manickum moved out of the middle onto the left flank. Within minutes Alex got on the ball on the left and ran strongly into the penalty box and fired a great ball across the face of goal with the outside of the foot for a tempting opportunity but we could not get anyone to it. We were looking like a chance to equalise but needed another change up so pulled Callum Brown to go three at the back and brought on Andy Wallace who settled in well and put himself about in a central position beside Alex. Unfortunately when you are playing catch-up football the clock is always again you and to ECBs enjoyment and our dismay the Referee, who had a good match, blew full time and we suffered another 1-0 loss. The players were of course not happy about their plight and some had a say as we grouped on the pitch before our showers, which is reflective of the frustrations we are all experiencing. The challenge this week now is to build on that hurt and turn it into a hunger.
Well done to Ryan O’Sullivan for another MOM performance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters for their efforts this year as this is our last home game of the season. Also to the club and committee for their support as we look to retain a Premier spot for next season. Regards Warren Parke First Team Coach More photo’s on page 16&17

CHATHAM CUP ROUNDUP Onehunga Sports, the last Auckland Football club in the ASB Chatham Cup, exited at the quarter-final stage on Sunday, falling 7-0 to Waitakere City FC at Fred Taylor Park. Waitakere City were again in ominous form dispatching Onehunga Sports with alarming ease in Whenuapai. Roy Krishna scored in each half with the rest of the goals spread around Imran Shah, Rory Turner, Jake Butler, John Muchirahondo and Alepua Petoa. Meanwhile, Melville were celebrating deep into Saturday night after reaching the semi-finals for the first time since their run to the 2003 final with a pulsating 3-2 win over Lotto NRFL Premier League side Birkenhead United at Gower Park.
Scott Hilliar twice gave the home side the lead inside the opening 20 minutes but his 11th minute opener – after an incisive Jama Boss run – was cancelled out after just a minute by Marseille-bound Bill Tuiloma. Hilliar restored the advantage with a 19th minute inswinging corner that beat everybody and Aaron Scott’s retaken penalty just shy of the hour mark edged Melville closer to the win. Even then, Tuiloma ensured a nervous final 20 minutes when he thumped his second goal to reduce the deficit with only a late red card to Birkenhead playmaker Jack Hobson-McVeigh killing the momentum of a fast-finishing North Shore club. The draw for the semi-finals will be made on Monday 29 July at 2pm and you can follow it LIVE on New Zealand Football’s YouTube channel and Twitter account. RESERVES REPORT Since I last wrote our match report we have experienced the highs and lows that football brings. At home against league leaders Hamilton 3 weeks ago we eked out a 1-0 win to put us second equal with Central, 1 point behind Hamilton BUT with a game in hand. The game was very even with both sides attacking with flair and defending tenaciously the only difference being a penalty awarded in the first half for hand ball. Jordan stepped up and on his second attempt (first one saved but Hamilton had encroached too early into the box) he slammed home a good shot. The following week we played Central at their alternative home base at the Croatian Cultural fields in Te Atatu. The grass field was in excellent condition and the day had a summery feel to it. As is often the case on the grass fields we took a while to adjust and although we talked about starting strongly and focussing on the basics we started very poorly (enjoying the sunshine Monju, Zach and Ben chase the ball too much I think) and found ourselves down 2-0 at half-time. The second half for us was like chalk and cheese compared with the first. We had found our mojo and never lost belief that we could win. This was made easier after about 15 minutes when Centrals 90kg 6’2”centre back got a little hot in the head after 50Kg 5’6” Jordan tackled him strongly and in the ensuing free kick mele tried to throttle Freddie and was duly given his marching orders. We got one back fairly quickly and then Freddie who had moved from cenWarren fixes the Central goal tre back to centre forward equalised on the 90 minute mark and we came away with draw. Hamilton won so moved to three points ahead. Birkenhead also won and leapfrogged both Central and ourselves into second leaving us third equal with a game in hand.
Myron stays cool And so this brings us to last week’s game against East Coast Bays. Again we were away, this time on Bay City Parks cut up #1 sand based pitch. This time we knew that to win the league we must win this and the remaining three games but not everyone “was on the same page”. In the first half we played reasonably well and had plenty of opportunities to score but were unable to convert. This in part was due to some excellent saves by the Bays keeper but more noticeably due to rushed and poor decision making in front of goal. We went to half time locked at 0-0 but feeling confident that the game was ours. We had played pretty well, were guilty of turning Ben and Zach work together on D. 14
RESERVES REPORT over possession too easily a lot of the time but were not threaten at all in front of our own goal. Obviously the half time talk was too relaxed. I asked the players to keep doing the same but value possession a little more and make better choices in front of goal. I think the message received was “it’s all good, we just have to turn up in the second half and we will win”. The second half was one to forget. We continued to give the ball away at critical times and were under more pressure right from the start of the half. Instead of knuckling down and playing the passing and moving game that is our trade mark we started taking men on and knockThe Reserves defend a corner in the first half ing the ball forward loosely. Before we knew it we had given a goal away and as we started to chase the game and move more players forward we gave another away and eventually finished with only our Quarter-Final Results: 3rd loss of the season 0-2. This was gutwrenching for the boys as they saw their East Coast Bays 1, Birkenhead 4 goal to win the league slip away.
NRFL Reserves Knockout Cup
Hamilton and Central won so leaving us in fourth place 4 points behind Hamilton, 3 behind Central and 1 behind Birkenhead, albeit still with a game in hand over all of them.
After two great training sessions this week I am confident that the boys have put last week behind them and are looking forward to a good contest today against Three Kings who we welcome here to “The Ave”. I am sure both games will be exciting, fast and flowing games and very evenly contested. Go hard both Firsts and Reserves; let’s get the results we deserve!

CLUB FUNDRAISER GETTING THE MENTAL EDGE Hi there and welcome to the Semen’s Skills School for the 2012 season. After 2011 was cut short due to some reasonably serious criminal charges I have come back to share with you aspiring footballers the key aspects to becoming the next Harry Ngata or Phil Neville. There is a common misconception thatfootball is played with the feet and I am here to dispel the myth. Getting the mental edge is your first step to success on the field......
BE BETTER THAN YOU ARE: A lot of the youngest children at my coaching clinics have no talent to speak of and struggle with the basics, often presenting themselves as the ones to fail in life. These players also have difficulty with dribbling around the cones. To beat this frailty, it is important to teach these kids to be better than they are. Here are several methods on how to be better than you actually are! THINK ON YOUR FEET – NOT WITH THEM: Be adaptable! Case in point, a child was left behind after my first clinic three weeks ago, obviously forgotten about by his parents or he didn’t have any parents. Instead of complaining and sulking about his predicament as it grew darker and darker he used his initiative and hitchhiked home with a complete stranger in an unregistered van. I watched this with great interest and I am disappointed that he hasn’t returned for future sessions. CONCENTRATION AND FOCUS It’s a well documented fact that Tiger Woods in his teenage years was abused relentlessly by his parents whilst standing over crucial putts or talking with his friends, which is typical of the Chinese. They would call him the most awful of names and subject him to questionable household disciplines which have been proven to be at the forefront of his extramarital troubles. While I don’t readily practice these techniques at my clinics it is fair to say a billion dollars and 14 majors show immense focus. Find the method that works for you and your child at home and remember you don’t need to be orthodox. VISUALISE Being good at pretending and pretending you are good are the same thing, just ask some of my past students. Endorsed by an offshoot of FIFA, some of my techniques have made great players in the short term. Often the methods aren’t suitable for eve-

PREMIER CLUB RANKINGS With just a handful of games left it’s going to be a close run thing at the top of in all the Tier 1 divisions, and there’s some decent relegation battles going on as well. First, and starting from the top, MPL leaders Cashmere Technical retain the #1 rankings spot despite being held to a scoreless draw by Nelson Suburbs. The MPL title is still a four-way race and next weekend’s fixtures will be decisive as third placed Ferrymead Bays (ranked #6) face Cashmere at home and second placed Nelson Suburbs (ranked #11) host fourth placed Western (ranked #15). FCTwenty11’s loss in the weekend sees them relegated from the MPL. Holding on to #2 in the rankings are Roslyn Wakari who were 4-0 victors away at Northern. Elsewhere in the FSPL, Caversham AFC welcomed new Southern Utd coach Luis Uehara to Tonga Park before dispatching his Otago University side 6-0; that big win sees Caversham climb to #3 in the rankings. And FSPL league leaders Dunedin Technical got up at the last 2-1 over Mosgiel AFC and now sit in #7. Any of the three Dunedin sides that sit in the rankings top 10 can still claim the FSPL title. Rooted to the bottom of the FSPL are Grants Braes and anything but maximum points in their remaining four games will see them relegated. A battle royal is also facing Queenstown Rovers, Invercargill Old Boys and Mosgiel AFC to avoid relegation. This puts next weekend’s clashes between Rosyln Wakari and Queenstown Rovers, and Dunedin Technical and Invercargill Old Boys in clear perspective – at the top and the bottom there are often no easy games at this stage of the season. Staying in the the #4 rankings spot are Miramar Rangers who were held 1-1 away at Wairarapa Utd but still able to take advantage at the top of the CPL as Wellington Olympic slumped 3-0 at Western Suburbs; Olympic remain ranked #5 and Miramar remain favourites to take out another CPL. At the ‘other end’ of the CPL Tawa scored a massive win over fellow strugglers Wellington Utd, which sees them leapfrog off the bottom of the table. Wellington Utd need something from next weekend’s game against Upper Hutt City if they are to avoid seeing their sojourn in the CPL end. Finally in the NRPL, #8 ranked East Coast Bays continue to lead #9 ranked Birkenhead Utd by three points thanks to a tight 1-0 win over Ellerslie AFC. Birkenhead has a game in hand over the Bays and got home late to defeat third placed Hamilton Wanderers 2-1, effectively ending the Waitako club’s title challenge. Manurewa AFC look destined for Division 1 football in 2014, but their hopes will be revived if they can get three points away at Bay Olympic next week. Remarkably, since they were the 2011 and 2012 NRPL champions, the Bay also finds themselves in a relegation battle along with Ellerslie AFC and Onehunga Sports. Waitakere City aren’t out of trouble yet either, but they have put together a suburb run in the league and Chatham Cup which has seen them record five straight wins and up to #17 in the rankings; things looked bleak at the end of May when Waitakere were ranked #36, but not many would bet on them being relegated now.
