PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE AFC VS WESTERN SPRINGS

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Tonight we would like to welcome our fellow “Tiger Turf” club Western Springs to Michaels Ave Reserve for the first time since we have had the turf installed in the NRFL. Western Springs have always been touted as a sleeping giant, well in-case you were not paying attention the giant is well awake and make no mistake Neil and his lads are every bit the favourites for promotion to the premier league this season. Credit must go to the Western Springs Club and their staff for the improvements they have made at Seddon Fields which has helped them realise their potential as a major player in the Auckland Football scene and in Neil Emblen they have a great figurehead for their Green and White revolution. That all add’s up to a key game tonight as Warren and his lads look to measure up against what everyone considers are the early pacesetters in what will be a very close promotion race in the Lotto NRFL Div 1 this year. Regardless of the result tonight we are bound to find out more about our own team and that’s exciting as big games are where the real gutsy and talented players stand up. Mentions must be made about Chris and his reserves team as they go from strength to strength with a 100% record in the season and an unbeaten pre-season campaign as well. All this is with an almost entirely new team this season. And not because Chris has lost players to other clubs, most of his talented group from last year are now in the first team which speaks volumes for Chris and Marshy’s ability to mould players for higher levels! Good job guys! Our 2nd Div NRFL Reserves team have a tough game at Lynn Avon today as well - Lynn Avon from what I remember have an experienced reserves side and our young guys may find it tough out at Ken Maunder today but it’s a massive learning experience for them and they will be better off for it. We hope after tonight’s game has concluded and the dust (or rubber in this case) has settled you will join us in the clubrooms for a cold drink or some hot food and we can share some laughs and stories as players of the world great game! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Mt Albert-Ponsonby vs Metro Anderson Park Friday 11 April Kick-off: 7pm Referee: Mark Fisher The weekend’s action starts early with this Friday night clash between fierce foes. The clubs are located just a stone’s throw from each other so local bragging rights are on offer and matches between the pair are always keenly contested. Both have made middling starts to the season with Mt Albert posting a loss and a win and Metro notching two draws. Mt Albert’s Jared Colligan is in hot form after scoring a hat-trick in the 5-0 rout of Papatoetoe. Mangere United vs North Shore United Centre Park Saturday 12 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Mazhar Abdullali Newly-promoted Mangere have taken well to life in the higher echelons and are unbeaten so far having recorded a win and a draw. The skilful Ernesto Lopez scored twice on the opening day and is likely to be at the heart of most of Mangere’s attacking raids. North Shore are likewise not short of firepower though with Jaryd Gray and Ed Sillars both having two goals to their name already. Eastern Suburbs vs Manurewa Madills Farm Saturday 12 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Blair McConnell It appears likely the home side will take all three points here as Suburbs have started well to sit second on the table while Manurewa have carried the previous season’s relegation from into this campaign and are yet to get off the mark. They will have to find a way to stop Nik Keown-Robson, who has run rampant in the opening weeks to find the net three times. Hibiscus Coast vs Papatoetoe Stanmore Bay Park Saturday 12 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Hayden Tutbury Both sides will be keen to get back on track after falling to hefty defeats last weekend. Papatoetoe suffered a 5-0 humbling at the hands of Mt Albert-Ponsonby while the Coasters went down 4-1 to Eastern Suburbs. A repeat performance for either team would be of great concern so the fight for the points is likely to be particularly intense. Takapuna vs Melville United Taharoto Park Saturday 12 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Ken Quigley This meeting between north and south is likely to bring about a highly-motivated performance from Melville as the Hamiltonians are yet to secure a win and have only a point to show for their efforts. Captain Gavin Douglas has done his best to show the way by scoring in both matches and will hope his troops finally follow that lead this time. They will have to keep an eye on Takapuna’s Lee Robinson as he scored twice in the local derby loss to North Shore last weekend and now has three strikes to his name. Ellerslie vs Western Springs Michaels Ave Saturday 12 April Kick-off: 6pm Referee: Chris Larkin Relegated Ellerslie’s hosting of promoted Springs shares top billing with the Mt Albert derby in this round and for good reason. Neil Emblen’s Springs side have picked up exactly where they left off and proven themselves to be a potent attacking force, scoring seven times in just two matches. No player has struck more than once yet though so it will be difficult for Ellerslie to pinpoint the most dangerous threat. It will be easier for Springs to do so as Will Roper’s hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Manurewa last weekend makes him an obvious choice for special attention.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Last week’s first home game of the season saw us take on Manurewa at Michaels Ave - a fixture as we have pointed out before was a all premier league affair last season. We have managed to have the wood on Manurewa in recent competitive games but a loss to the memorial park outfit in preseason meant we were not going to take this game lightly. We again managed to score early in the game, this time we opened the scoring with a lovely team move which ended up with Andy crossing to the far post where an unmarked Will Roper opened his account from 2 yards - that wasn’t enough for Will though as he clearly wanted more of a challenge and he accomplished that with a left foot screamer from the left corner of the Rewa box to double the lead. Shifting Mr Roper off free kick duty normally is tough but when he is on a hatrick and the skipper it’s even harder so Pikey must have been confident when he convinced the left footed striker to let him have a crack - and have a crack he did when he popped another screamer into the goal to give us a 3 goal buffer. Heading into halftime we didn’t think 3 was enough after last week’s second half stumble so the boys were eager to get back out and finish the contest off. They didn't have to wait long as the Rewa defence coughed up possession early in the second half to Will Roper who was in a fine mood and blasted home his third via an unlikely route - his right foot from some distance. The 2012 NRFL Div 1 Golden Boot was pretty stoked with his hatrick and two of the three goals wouldn’t have looked out of place in a much higher level of football, he deserved the pludits after all his hard work in the game and during the pre-season. Unfortunately the 4th goal signalled a momentum shift and Rewa came back into the game with two quick goals, and they threatened to run us down when injury to Dominic Higgins left us with 10 men for the last 5 mins (plus like 13 minutes of injury time????) To be fair to the Ellerslie AFC defence the

8

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT first goal was a highly debatable penalty won by the experienced Hoani Edwards - The referee seemed to find some contact in the box between Dom and the aforementioned Hoani, but investigation after the game found that even the winner of the penalty saw nothing in it. I believe the exact quote was “I was going down before he even came anywhere near me”. Still that’s football and the boys didn’t react well to losing their clean sheet and were sloppy for the rest of the second half and when a scrappy second went in and Dom went off injured we feared the worst. Luckily for us in the first half when Rewa were poor we were good enough to get the buffer we needed and although we were not happy with the second half performance we did enough to bring home the 3 points and maintain a good start to the season. Man of the Match was no contest as the man with the two wonder goals (plus another handy one) was given the applause of the clubrooms in the after match speeches. Best of luck this weekend to the reserves as they try to preserve their 100% record—good luck Chris, Marshy and the lads To the first team boys tonight will be a massive challenge against a tough springs side and we will need to play 90 to come away with something tonight! Best of Luck! NRFL Coaching Team

Did you know the 2 goals Manurewa scored against us last weekend are the first time they have scored against us in the last 5 matches, we had a streak of 12 goals for and none against before the game on Saturday Night.

RESERVES REPORT ELLERSLIE AFC NRFL Senior Reserves Match Report for Saturday April 4th vs MANUREWA Coming off a resounding 5-1 win against North Shore the previous week and an undefeated pre-season, it was important that the boys kept their feet on the ground and continued to focus on each game as a new and unknown challenge and not let any complacency creep into their play. Equally Manurewa came into the game from a good 3-2 win against Mangere and also a keen desire I’m sure to avenge their two losses against Ellerslie in last year’s Premier Reserves competition. Again the day was a scorcher and with plenty of water on board the Ellerslie lads started well playing with their usual style to knock the ball around working the opposition as much as possible. On about the 10 minute mark, Mike Glenny switched the play through Niall at Centre back who with a well executed pass found Dylan Tate out wide on the right. Dylan got around his man and put in an excellent cross to striker Rob Hall who neatly gathered the ball and shot with his second touch past the outstretched Manurewa keeper to give us a 1-0 scoreline. While Ellerslie were to create numerous attacks throughout the game they were often guilty of poor decision making in the attacking 3rd and the score remained 1 - 0 until the 87th minute

12

RESERVES REPORT when a poor pass by the Manurewa left back allowed Callum Waters to intercept about mid way of attacking half, where he beat his opposing number and threaded a nice pass through their centre backs for young 17 year old Lachlan to run onto and score a nicely taken shot. The game finished 2-0 and see’s the Reserves sitting at the top of the table. Well done lads, keep up the hard work and your goals for the season will be realised. Man of the match went to Zach Rathbone who was dynamite from right fullback especially going forward overlapping the right wing and tormenting the Manurewa defence with some well placed crosses. He was also solid all day in defence and his hard work to get fit in the past two weeks after a slow start has paid off. This week we welcome Western Springs to “the Ave”. Good Luck to Warren and the 1st team boys. Let’s keep the momentum going from last week and bag another 3 points. Kind regards Chris Wallace

Winners on the day included two EAFC based teams who took home the Champions League and Europa League titles - congrats to all those guys who can claim to the be the kings of summer football.

CLUB NEWS The Senior Club has grown again this season - the senior club now boasts 27 Senior teams plus one ASFA affiliated team as well. The new teams to the club are: U19’s Torrens - a group of highly talented young players who have made the jump up from U17’s Metro last year - should be a team to watch this year! Div 3 CFC - Chelsea Football Club, this team is based around a group of Chelsea fans but they don’t have a special one managing them, they don’t need him they will turn some heads this season in their first in AFF football - some talent here! Women’s Div 4B - another group of youngsters, this team has moved up from Women’s U17’s last year so the team could stay together - they are enjoying the competition so far with one win from one game Div 6 Boylan - This team is mostly a group of guys who are first year out of uni and wanted to give 11’s a crack, early results suggest they will be tough to beat this season Div 11 Fake Madrid - a team converted over to 11’s from Marc Prenty’s 7 a side competitions, this team features some interesting Ellerslie names of recent times and I expect the title to be within the grasp of the FM boys this season.
