“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE AFC VS MELVILLE UNITED HERITAGE ROUND
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to today’s special home game at Michaels Ave Reserve – the home of Ellerslie AFC since 1953. Today’s heritage round was inspired by the NRL and the lengths they go to each year to actively celebrate the history of their clubs/franchises – it’s great to see a team like the Tigers or the Dragons play a game in Magpie’s or Steeler’s colours to reflect their history. We decided last year that we would have a heritage round and while we struggled to get it off the ground in the 2013 season, we are proud to be able to say we did get it to happen in the end, and I hope it was worth the wait. The shirt the first team will wear today was inspired by the shirts worn in that 1993 title winning team, we have added a slightly modern twist – but the homage to the past is there to see. There is another reason to look to the past today – although it’s slightly more recent history – it’s still important! Today we celebrate and thank the efforts of Warrick Hart for the club over the past years – a one club man and with exactly 100 first team games (for 62 goals), his loyalty and passion for the club was unmatched and while we will miss his strength and efforts on the field I’m sure Wazza will be involved in some capacity off the field – congrats mate on a great career and enjoy a pain free retirement! The reserves today have an important game against Melville as well – a win here would overturn a loss at Gower Park in the first round and set the reserves up for a great chance at the title. Melville have a good side and it will be a great game, so get down early to see it play out. During the first team game there will be a chance for the kids to play a bit of zorb football on the training area and there will be an official game during the halftime on the main field – so there will be some great entertainment during the game and at halftime. Up at the club we have the kitchen and bar open so please come up and enjoy some Ellerslie hospitality after your game. Good luck to everyone with their games today!
Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

NRFL DIV ONE PREVIEW Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Manurewa AFC Anderson Park 1 Kickoff - 2:45pm MAP take on Rewa in 8th spot on the ladder and while they are only 4 points from 5th they will be rueing a mid season slump after a fast start to the season. Will a rare game at the Anderson in daylight be what spurs the home side into back to back wins or will Rewa pick up the 3 points to put them level with Metro and pull clear of the relegation zone. TIP: MAP 3-1 Mangere vs Western Springs Centre Park 1 Kickoff - 2:45pm A bit of a potential banana skin here for the Meola Road outfit as they take on the enigma’s that are Mangere - a shocking run of results for the South Auckland side has to come to an end at some point, Neil and his team will be wanting to make sure they don’t drop vital points after their win last week over Ellerslie. TIP: Draw 2-2 Eastern Suburbs vs North Shore Madlls Farm 1 Kickoff - 2:45pm Top of the table Suburbs take on Shore who are firmly nestled in the bottom half of the table - form would point to a win for the #lillywhites at home but can ex Ellerslie star Eddie Sillars inspire the team from The Hill to an upset? TIP: Suburbs 3-1 Hibiscus Coast vs Metro Stanmore Bay Park Kickoff - 2:45pm Coast will be glad to see their three suspended players back after last weeks shock loss to Papatoetoe points are super important to the Coasters now as they chase one of those three promotion spots. In their way today is the underperforming Metro who on their day could take full points from this clash. TIP: Metro 2-1 Takapuna vs Papatoetoe Taharoto Park Kickoff - 2:45pm The table points to a win for the North Shore side over the Murdoch Road outfit, but with their win over fellow NFF side Hibiscus Coast last week the Toe may think they are on a roll and may fancy their chances to go back to back. Takapuna will be looking to goal talisman Lee Robinson to knock a few goals in and make a late last push for the top three. TIP: Taka 3-1

Warrick Hart - a veteran of 100 First Team games with 62 First Team goals - today he officially announces his retirement from football. He has been modern legend of the club - below is some thoughts from his peers. Player Testimonials Absolute legend. Have loved playing up front with you over the years mate - Will Roper COOKIE MONSTER!!! - Martin Pike I will always be so impressed by Wazza’s selection of board shorts, absolute idol - Rene Aafjes It still haunts me to remember that time you put me on my backside with your patented “Stomp over” and scored when I was at ESAFC - Sean Dowling It has been a pleasure watching you play for the first team and for Ellerslie. Most memorable moment was bus trip back from North Force as the Ultimate Warrior loved those guns. Don’t be a stranger - Carol Ritchie Warrick Hart, such a massive part of the fantastic Ellerslie culture. Mr Otago, the celebratory ’X’ and the magnetic right foot, sure to become Ellerslie folk lore - Irreplaceable - Grant Marshall A pleasure to play with and a true gentleman of the game. Loyal. - Nathan Palmer When I was a bright eyed youngster playing for the reserves for the first time, Warrick was the embodiment of everything I aspired to. Now that he’s old and tired, I will relentlessly tease him until the end of his days - Mike Glenny 100 games for the club, a special milestone - a huge servant to the club, both on and off the field Tim Adams Thanks for all your efforts over the years and your loyalty, you’re a real gentleman, on and off the pitch - Warren Parke A horrible person to mark at training but a fantastic great guy! I wish your premier league team all the worst of luck next year - Matt Scarborough Wazza has been an absolute top man from my first training with Ellerslie, got massive respect for him and only heard good things about him - Freddie Ljungberg

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT This was a big game for both clubs, we were siEng second and Springs were in third place on the ladder. We were without Ollie Mullane and Andy Wallace and we decided to play with our shape a bit, to accommodate some off our opponent’s stronger parts of their game. The match started well for us, as we looked to play at a good pace, and all the boys got into their rhythm early. We moved the ball well and our system tweak had Springs doing their best to work us out. In the early stages we had Dominic Higgins in on goal one v one with the keeper, Freddie Ljungberg with a close range effort and Will Roper watching his set piece crash against the cross bar, all trouble the Springs defence. The signs were good, so it was disappoin7ng to say the least, when approaching the break Mar7n Pike was pulled of the ball, the linesman flagged and the referee allowed play on and Springs took the lead. I understand the referee is in control of the game and his decision is final, but felt he should have consulted the linesman and inquired to know what he had seen that made him raise and wave his flag, given the importance of the match. The second half started as we had leL it and all was good un7l the referee decided Mar7n Pikes challenge in the middle of the park deserved a straight red card. This was a setback but we persevered and pulled the match back to 1-1 with a tremendous strike from Adam Barkley. The game had now become an intense tussle and in one such exchange Ma$ Lieshout was given a second yellow card for his tackle. We were down to 9 men now but s7ll managed to trouble our hosts. We had some 7red bodies at this point so Alex Wi$eveen and Jordy Oosterhof were introduced with about 20 mins to play.
10
FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Down to nine men we worked 7relessly to stay in the match and s7ll looked dangerous going forward, but we were geEng stretched at 7mes and late in the game springs scored the winning goal to give the 12 we had played against the result they had architected. It was from a well won aerial challenge that Alex contested, and unbelievably conceded a free kick, that had captain Will Roper asking the referee for some clarity and a fair go that saw us lose our third player to a straight red card, for what the referee saw to be abuse in the 90th min to top the day o. So another challenge presents itself today and I look forward to it as do the boys, there is a determina7on in this squad that should not be underes7mated and with each knock back we will get stronger. We had excellent performances from all, with special men7on to Sean Dowling, Adam Barkley and of course TIM RICHARDSON,but in a close decision it was Ma$ Scarborough that edged the votes for the MOM.
Regards Warren

RESERVES REPORT Ellerslie NRFL Reserves Match Report With 13 games of the 22 league games played the NRFL1 Reserves are travelling very well siEng on top of the table six points clear of this weekend’s opponents, Melville. Ironically we travelled to Hamilton on Good Friday aLer torren7al rain the day before. Consequently to protect the main ground for the first team we were relegated to the “paddock” out the back, a real leveller. As I write this report, torren7al rain and high winds buffet Auckland with the worst storm so far this year. The saving grace is that Michaels Ave will be in perfect condi7on and so we can look forward to open and flowing football from two talented teams. For Melville they will want to keep their unbeaten record against us and chip away at our lead. For the Ellerslie boys it is a real chance to extend our lead and apart from the loss against Melville maintain our unbeaten record in the league. Our stats to date are; Played 13
